In 1989-90, the Bureau of Mines appraised selected high resource potential areas containing gold, rare-earth-element, or pegmatite deposits in or near the Black Hills National Forest. Available mineral resource data were used to construct mine and mill models and to compute discounted cash-flow rate-of-return analyses. Using this information, the economic feasibility of possible operations and probability (in the nonmathematical sense) of exploration and development within the next decade were assessed. High exploration and development probabilities are forecast for gold deposits around existing and permitted mine areas near Lead-Deadwood and west of Galena. The area east of Galena has low to moderate exploration and development probability; the Rochford area has low to high exploration probability and low to moderate development probability; the Keystone area has low to moderate exploration probability and low development probability; the Medicine Mountain area has moderate to high exploration and low to moderate development probabilities. Exploration probability in the Bear Lodge Mountains area is high for rare-earth elements and gold; development probability is low. Exploration probability for gold in the Mineral Hill area is low to moderate; development probability is low. The current level of activity associated with pegmatite mining in the Black Hills would probably not change significantly in the next decade; both exploration and development probabilities are low to moderate.

THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a United States Department of Energy facility located in southeastern New Mexico. It is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic radioactive waste in deep geologic salt beds. Westinghouse TRU Solutions, LLC, the managing and operating contractor, undertook a project to simulate the processes at WIPP in order to identify bottlenecks and optimize available resources. The activities simulated in the model included the receipt, processing and disposal of radioactive waste underground, the mining of new areas for future waste disposal and the transportation of salt out of the mine. The complexity of the processes and the interactive requirements between processes required the use of advanced modeling techniques. The simulation model includes a huge number of locations and path network node points, with movement to and from the locations controlled using parameters rather than explicit routing. Information for the timing and sequence of the mining and nuclear waste emplacement operations is brought into the model via spreadsheets. Arrays in the simulation model keep track of past and future events that occur. Routing to the multiple possible positions in the underground mine is done using attributes, and system functions within ProModel in order to allow for a highly flexible sequence of planned events and to reduce the level of effort in creating the ProModel processing. Considerable use of subroutines in the simulation model is utilized for parametric decision-making that is repetitive. This presentation describes the modeling techniques used to accurately simulate the surface and underground operations. The surface and underground operations are considerably different, thus they will be treated in their own sections.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. The ore, dealt with in this paper, is a certain rutile in Shanxi province, China. A trunk flowsheet with gravity concentration is used, and the TiO2 grade of rutile concentrate is about 90%, but the TiO2 recovery is less than 50%. In order to increase the rutile recovery, the laboratory test, using the truck flowsheet with flotation, is carried out. The flowsheet is that firstly floatable gangue is re-moved by flotation; secondly rutile is recovered by flotation; and thirdly impurity is separated by LIMS, HIMS, gravity concentration and flotation from the rutile concentrate. In rutile flotation, BK423, a phosphonic acid, is used as rutile collector, and Na2SiF6 is used as silicates depressant. The experimental result shows that the recovery of rutile concentrate is improved obviously, and the recovery of ultimate rutile concentrate is 68.01% TiO2 and 84.88% rutile. The TiO2 grade of first concentrate is 95.98%, and the TiO2 recovery is 45.60%. The TiO2 grade of second concentrate is 80.53%, and the recovery is 22.41%. Furthermore, magnetite and ilmenite are recovered in the flowsheet.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage is comprised of seven different types of machines. The continuous mining machine is first among all the equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. The ational Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce excessive exposure for operators of continuous mining machines and preventing additional cases of oise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) by developing low-cost retrofit noise controls for mining equipment. This paper describes a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 26.4% and 27.4% noise exposure reduction for the continuous mining machine operator. This research is providing the mining community with an additional noise control to be utilized on continuous mining machines, therefore reducing operator noise overexposure. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls for the continuous mining machine chain conveyor, will provide operators of these machines an opportunity to be within the MS HA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

In the United States, the occurrence of underground mine fires/explosions continue to decrease; however, they pose great danger to the miners and any subsequent mine rescue teams and/or fire brigades. Tragically, 19 coal miners lost their lives in 2006 at fires or explosions. Fires/explosions can devastate a mine and cause its permanent closure. It is vitally important to obtain accurate information on the gas content (concentration and composition) of the mine atmosphere after the event so that appropriate action can be instituted to rescue any trapped miners while not exposing the mine rescue teams to unnecessary hazards. Additionally, the fire fighting techniques (spraying water, sealing, etc.) will be dictated by the gas content. Finally, the gas content will determine when it is safe to recover the mine. The gas content of the air can be determined using detector tubes, handheld instruments, portable instruments, or gas chromatographs. No single instrument is suitable for all analyses. Each type of instrument has its advantages and disadvantages. This paper discusses these attributes.

Because of the increasing use of zinc as an active and passive anticorrosion agent for steel, leading to constantly growing return rates of galvanized steel components, especially through the automotive industry, major Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) flue dust amounts with higher zinc contents will accumulate in future. Landfilling of steel plant flue dusts is no longer allowable for ecological reasons. These dusts are classified as hazardous by law. Waelz technology is safe and reliable. The range .of treatable feed materials has been extended by process modifications and state-of-the-art offgas technology. Waelz oxide, the product, is delivered to metal smelters for zinc production and the byproduct, Waelz slag, can be used in road construction. Despite the fact that Waelz technology is among the best available techniques (BAT), it is continuously being optimized further with respect to energy input, product and offgas quality in order to comply with the ever more stringent environmental regulations. However, if these flue-dusts are treated, the loops between the steel and the zinc industry can be closed by reusing recovered zinc which in tum leads to savings in natural resources and a more reasonable use of landfills.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the early detection of insulation failure in squirrel cage induction motors for the past 4 years. Research was done using a sophisticated empirical data-modeling technique based on values calculated from a motor's voltage and current phasors. This technique produces two polynomial equations that calculate the insulation leakage current and power. These models were implemented in a prototype system that monitors six motors on a continuous miner for insulation leakage. These insulation leakage values are used to anticipate insulation failure. The system consists of a motor-data-system for each motor on the machine and a control computer located away from the miner. Each motor-data-system consists of an analog interface to the motor's voltages and currents, a single-board computer that reads digitized data and calculates voltage and current phasors, and a bus node that interfaces the single-board computer with the rest of the system by way of a serial bus system. Using this bus system, the control computer requests and receives phasor data from the motor-data-systems. From these data the control computer calculates and displays two deterioration values for each motor, for leakage current and power, using Bureau-developed models. These values are stored in a data base from which the user can display graphs of each motor's deterioration values over time.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

"INTRODUCTION Sorting technology has advanced rapidly recently. Of the two possibilities particle sorting has advanced especially in introducing new sensors and the use of multiple sensors. The analyzing and computing lead times have also shortened. This has made it a viable technology option for many applications but not for the most important sorting task at a mine; the run-of mine ore. Bulk sorting, however, has advanced in smaller steps, even if the technology has the capability to tackle the run-of-mine ore and offers a high potential to bring mines substantial economic benefits. The sensors, which are useful are restricted by the difficult operating conditions or by the ore characteristics. One of the important features of run-of-mine sorting technology is the major material handling infrastructure required. The capital expenditure can be substantial requiring good understanding of the sortability curve (grade-recovery curve) behavior of the ore. This paper discusses one industrial case, where substantial amount of data measured from the ore feed belt has been obtained. This data was then analyzed for the grade recovery curves obtainable from that ore with sorting. EXPERIMENTAL The XRF measurement used was the FCA device from IMA Engineering (Fig.1). It is a specially built version of XRF designed to operate with coarse material. The measurement was situated at the main belt conveyor taking ore from the primary crusher to the stockpile. The crushed ore was about 80% -300 mm at a capacity of 1100-1200 tph (Fig.2). Measurement times were varied from 30 seconds to a minute. Measurements were obtained over several months.As the XRF is a surface distribution measuring technique, the measurement was first tested upon accuracy and reproducibility against plant daily wet chemical assays and against on-line Courier feed analysis. As there is a varying delay in the ore stockpile, the delay time was used as a variant in the validation. Different measurement times were tested for accuracy. A one minute measurement time gave a total measurement relative standard error, which was both for Cu and Ni below 3%. The results showed also very robust correlations; for Cu, the correlation coefficient was R > 0,94 for one minute measurements over three months and R > 0,86 for Ni respectively. Fig 3. Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

"The article highlights results of theoretical and practical studies on the enlargement of fine gold in the process of heat treatment. The object of research is refractory gold silicate-carbonate ores of Vorontsovskoe Deposit (Northern Ural), containing fine gold. For setting up experiments and analyzing the results were used the methods of applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, mathematical and physical modeling. Modeling and calculations were performed using the software package HSC Chemistry 6.0, MatLab, setting up a full factorial experiment and other modern modeling methods. Using a scanning electron microscope, the distribution of fine-dispersed ore gold particles by size was studied. It was found that gold particles smaller than 0,4 µm smoothed the vertices and edges, i.e. they are of globules with an amorphous structure. Amorphous materials are nonequilibrium phases with high thermodynamic activity. The physicochemical properties such as melting temperature, diffusion coefficients, the content of metal impurities differ from the properties of the solid phases. In the course of the research were formulated the following scientific bases of the mechanism of enlargement of the gold particles: - the movement of dispersed droplets of gold in the process of external heat to the surface of the ore particles in the pore occurs under the action of thermocapillary pressure; - after melting of the host rock occurs flotation of molten droplets by the bubbles of gases and coagulation of fine gold; - the conditions of flotation drops of gold in oxide melts; floated drops of radius R = 1-100 µm. Analysis of the equilibrium at the perimeter of wetting a drop of gold-oxide melt-gas showed that the scheme of the tension will not significantly differ from the case of solid gold, while the radius of the gas bubbles should be at least 2 times greater than the radius of drops of gold. The proposed method of predicting the results of the enrichment of the proposed scheme, including heat treatment and gravitational centrifugal concentration of crushed ore. Experimental verification of the proposed scheme in the laboratory showed a satisfactory convergence of experiment and prediction. Gold recovery in the concentrate was 33,84 against 33,7 percent forecast. The increase in overall gold recovery to a gravity concentrate after heat treatment is more than 20 %."

Este servidor además de concentrar en su red de campo redundante data de controladores e instrumentos de campo, puede compartir información con clientes usuarios y clientes de visualización dentro de la planta. En ese sentido, el objetivo es simplificar la producción y uso de datos únicos y garantizar la fiabilidad de estos a tiempo real para todos los niveles de supervisión a nivel administrativo, al tiempo que se planea y optimiza los recursos con la toma de decisiones apropiada.

Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.
