ZrB2 and TiB2 are one of the most significant metal borides. They are being used in various industrial areas from space technology to nuclear industry owing to their physical properties such as high melting point, high thermal/electrical conductivity and low density. Present study was conducted in two main stages: Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions and leaching. ZrO2, TiO2, B2O3 were used as starting material and Mg used as a reductant to produce ZrB2-TiB2 powders via SHS. Therefore, it was aimed to determine production parameters, leaching conditions and comprehensive examination of final product features. Certain steel mill wastes contain significant amounts of zinc oxide due to the use of galvanized scrap during the steel making process. Typically electric arc furnace (EAF), and basic oxygen process (BOP) flue dusts contain 20 to 30% zinc oxide and 40 to 50% iron oxides, along with smaller quantities of lead and cadmium. These materials can be recovered from the flue dusts by using a proven rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process. By-products of the recycling operation include a crude zinc oxide fume, which is captured in a baghouse filtering system, and sponge iron that may be recycled into the steel making operation. Crude zinc oxide properties plus the operating experience from two commercial RHF installations utilizing MR&E's DRyIron™ Process will be presented.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

Sulphide ores mined by Inco Limited in the Sudbury District contain small quantities of cobalt. During beneficiation, cobalt distribution to various streams is similar to nickel. After smelting, nickel is selectively extracted by carbonyl refining and the cobalt remains in the carbonylation residue. This residue is processed in a specialized hydrometallurgical plant to produce precious metal residues, copper cathodes, and a nickel- cobalt carbonate intermediate product. The nickel-cobalt is shipped to Port Colborne where the cobalt is separated as cobaltic hydroxide and refined to metallic cobalt. This paper deals specifically with the recently constructed Electro Cobalt Refinery. The cobaltic hydroxide is dissolved and residual zinc, copper and nickel are removed by ion exchange and organics by a carbon column. The purified cobalt solution is fed to the electrowinning circuit where cobalt rounds are produced on stainless steel mandrels. In the design and construction of the refinery, special attention was directed to materials of construction both for the process equipment and the physical plant, operating control and flexibility, and the quality of the working environment. The end result is an efficient and clean operation which yields a product of excellent quality.

In 1969 "Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne" produced 221,000 tons zinc ingots and 22,000 tons zinc dust, thus rating highest on the world's zinc producer list. The Company's plant at Balen, Belgium, with an output of 135,000 tons electrolytic zinc is the most important one of this group; it is an integrated metallurgical zinc and lead unit with recovery of most by-products. The present paper describes the zinc production facilities. The roasting section includes four fluid bed roasters (total concentrates charged: 740 tpd) and two sulfuric acid having a corresponding capacity. Calcine is leached in a fully automated plant by a two-step continuous process. Leaching residues, mixed with lead furnace slag, are treated in a shaft furnace. The recovered zinc fume is leached separately. In the near future, the leaching residues are to be treated by a wet process, developed in the Company's own laboratories. Purification of solutions is accomplished in two steps: antimony and zinc dust are added in the first one, only zinc dust in the second one for removal of cadmium. Electrolysis cells are partly of a conventional type. A new type of cell configuration was put onstream in October, 1969, planned output 60,000 tpy. Main features of the new cell rooms are the fully automatic pulling, stripping and replacing of the jumbo-size cathodes (immersed area 2.6 m2). Zinc cathodes are remelted in induction furnaces followed by in-line automatic casting and stacking machines.

ELEMENTAL phosphorus (referred to as P,) is a true mineral product that has developed, in the relatively brief span of a century, from a laboratory curiosity to a heavy chemical. Annual production now exceeds 300,000 short tons. Continued rise in production has been predicted, consistent with new applications for P, derivatives and the expected population increase. In itself elemental P, is valuable chiefly as an 'intermediate chemical. The principal end uses at present are in inorganic phosphates, both simple and complex, of sodium and potassium, used in water treatment and detergent compounds, leavening agents, food supplements, and dentifrices. Organic P, compounds are important as plasticizers, oil additives, flotation agents, and more recently as gasoline additives (TCP being the outstanding example). The increasing use of high-analysis water-soluble and liquid solution fertilizers, as well as the direct application of phosphoric acid to the soil, will probably be the most significant factors in P, production growth rate. Coke oven plants now using sulfuric acid to fix byproduct ammonia values will gradually switch to phosphoric acid in order to market a fertilizer with completely available values. Recently sponsored experiments show that phosphoric acid can be directly admixed with cattle and poultry feed to produce rapid growth. Both P, compounds and modifiers for oil well drilling mud show increasingly promising significance.

This exciting new process is an innovative combination of well-established processes of reaction of CH4 and sulfur vapor to produce CS2, followed by catalytic hydrolysis of CS2 to H2S, and Claus reaction of H2S and SO2 to sulfur. Key advantages are lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, better product sulfur quality and better operational stability. Technology has been developed for production of elemental sulphur from off-gas from autogenous smelting processes based on reduction of sulphur dioxide with natural gas with subsequent treatment of reduced gas containing hydrogen sulfide by the Klaus method. This technology has been applied on a commercial scale at the copper smelter of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex for treatment of off-gas from the Vanyukov smelting process (PV). In the course of further improvement of the technology a catalytic version of the process has been developed based on the use of a catalyst at the reduction stage, which permits a decrease in the natural gas requirement by 25% to 30%.

To extract the metals, the sulphur is recovered typically as sulphuric acid or liquid SOz, On the other hand, natural gas may contain over 20% of hydrogen sulphide (HzS) and a huge quantity of elemental sulphur is produced through oil and gas refining processes in the world. A large fraction of the sulphur mined from natural sources is eventually returned to the earth as fertilizers, by-products of desulphurisation and neutralisation processes, or as fugitives to the atmosphere. However, the supply and demand for sulphur are in imbalance. Such situation urges to develop a new smelting process without sulphuric acid production. This paper briefly reviews the global sulphur balance and the technologies for recovering elemental sulphur. The core of this paper is a proposal to convert SO2 gas to elemental sulphur by using organic materials. Some results of thermodynamic calculations and experiments are presented.

"In this study, iron based alloys (Fe-Mo, Fe-Cr-Ni, etc.) were produced by using aluminothermic methods starting from Mill Scales obtained continuous casting processes. Mill scales are an oxidised layer of steel alloys containing iron oxide, which includes + 2, + 3 values, on the surface of slabs and billets occurring during annealing in heating furnace at integrated iron and steel milling plant, and continuous casting unit. In the metallothermic experiments, different ratios of starting mixtures and addition of the oxide powders (Alz03, Si02, CaO, MgO) were examined, and their effects on the metal recovery and alloy compositions were carried out. The samples were characterized by using chemical analysis (AAS), XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.IntroductionSelf Propagating High Temperature Synthesis process (SHS) has many favour compared to the furnace applications, such as low energy requirement, low cost, very short processing time and simple operation, [l, 2]. In a SHS process, the ignition starts the combustion and propagates throughout the reactant mixture yielding the desired product. However, the disadvantages of the process such as inhomogeneous or unreacted products due to undesirable reaction rates needs to be overcome by changing some parameters such as ignition temperature, particle size, additive, atmosphere etc. [3, 4]. Mill scale is a layer of iron oxide which forms on ferrous materials cooling after being processed in hot rolling or continuous casting plants. Mill scale contains iron (II) and iron (III) oxides, which result in a 70% total iron content in oxide form. Not being able to reuse this material will prevent the raw material entering the production plant from being fully utilized [5]. This study aimed to produce Fe-based alloys via SHS (Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) metallurgy which is attractive process technique regarding fast and low-cost production ability of cast alloys by using high metallic iron content by reducing continuous casting mill scale."

FeMn alloys are typically produced with lumpy ore or sinters. Minara Autlan, the Mexican FeMn producer, is however making Mn-nodules as a raw material for Mn-alloy production. The Mn nodules have been characterized by XRF, XRD, by wet chemical methods and by EPMA. The Mn/Fe ratio is somewhat lower compared to commercial Mn ore on the marked. The basicity of the ore is however close to 1, and additional fluxes may not be used. The Mn-nodules will be in a state of manganosite (MnO), tephroite ((Mn, Ca)2SiO4) and galaxite ((Mn,Mg)Al2O4). This leads to a low melting temperature area. A low porosity and low amount of higher Mn-oxides gives a high thermal strength to the nodules.

THE economic manufacture of sulfuric acid by the ordinary chamber process usually involves production on a large scale and a plant that is costly to construct. The nature of sulfuric acid makes it costly to transport any great distance. For these reasons, the metallurgist has not found it feasible, at times, to beneficiate ores amenable to leaching, and a. need exists for a local process that will produce acid cheaply on a small or large scale. To leach ores containing residual sulfides, an oxidizer, such as ferric sulfate, is needed in solution. Precipitation with scrap iron is one of the cheapest methods of removing some metals from solution, giving a plant of low first cost and supplying a source of cheap ferrous sulfate. The other ingredient needed for the process is SO2 roaster gas; the addition of which, as, described below, will give both ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Where roaster gas is a waste or obnoxious, product, the expense. for materials is still further lessened. The use of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid as a solvent lends itself, well to the utilization of scrap iron as a precipitant, and the stages of the process fit in well together as an economic whole.

Millions of tons of sludge from different metallurgical processes are produced worldwide annually, and the environmental impact of landfilling these often hazardous sludges stresses the need to understand their role as valuable resources. The current work explores the potential of producing a saleable low-phosphorous ferromanganese alloy by utilizing sludge from the silicomanganese industry together with an iron source. The aim of the project is to explore the feasibility and practical challenges related to reduction and dissolution of manganese and silicon from the sludge to liquid metal and slag. Parameters such as ratio of input material as well as the effect of adding limestone and coke to the mixture were explored by thermodynamic calculations and adapted experimentally. Results show that a ferromanganese alloy, in fact, can be formed, while silicon and calcium forms a complex slag that captures a significant amount of impurities.

DURING recent years, there has been a material increase in the use of ferrophosphorus in the steel industry. It has been observed, when rolling sheets, that those made of Southern iron did not have to be rolled at as high a temperature as the others and, consequently, did not stick together. The reason was found to be the phosphorus content of Southern iron. It was therefore thought that an addition of phosphorus to sheet steel of other than Southern origin would give the same result as the use of Southern iron. At first, this addition was made by intro¬ducing phosphate rock in the blast furnace and reducing it together with the iron ore; but, because of the necessity for only small quantities of this grade of iron, the process was not satisfactory. The manufacture of ferrophosphorus was then introduced, so that additions might be made to the open-hearth furnace or ladle. Ferrophosphorus was first manufactured in the blast furnace. This method, however, can only economically produce a grade of product up to about 20 per cent. To produce a higher grade, it would be necessary to charge a larger proportion of phosphate-bearing material; and as the rate of absorption by the iron is low, there would be an increased loss of phosphorus oxides. This feature makes the production of a higher grade ferrophosphorus in the blast furnace uneconomical. The use of high-grade ferrophosphorus in the steel requires a smaller addition and involves, besides the economies in handling, an additional economy in transportation. The alloy with a higher percentage than 20 per cent. can be made only in the electric furnace. In the ordinary operation of the electric furnace in the production of ferrophosphorus, an alloy may be produced containing 26 per cent. phosphorus; this is the limit, for it does not seem possible to produce a higher phosphorus alloy even if large excesses of phosphatic materials are used. The reasons for the difficulty in raising this percentage of phosphorus are not known. Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

"Fine powder of tantalum is used as materials of electric condenser. It is important to control the distribution of particle diameter of tantalum fine powders for the commercial use. In this study, fine powders of tantalum were produced by reducing tantalum chloride vapor with hydrogen gas at 1673 and 1773K. The tantalum chloride vapor was reduced with hydrogen and the produced fine particles of tantalum were collected to observe the distribution of particle diameter. The effects of reaction temperature, partial pressure of hydrogen gas and vaporization temperature of tantalum chloride on the distribution of particle diameter and reaction efficiency of reduction were determined. The mechanism of reduction reaction of tantalum was discussed.IntroductionThe ultra fine powder shows various different physical properties from that of bulk materials. Therefore, the application of ultra fine powder to various fields such as magnetic material, electric material, catalyst, etc is anticipated. The control of shape of powder, size distribution, property of agglomeration, purity is required for the practical use of ultra fine powder. Although the ultra fine powders of ceramics are produced by various methods, the ultra fine powder of metals are produced by the evaporation in gas atmosphere, plasma evaporation process, chemical vapor deposition process, and reduction and precipitation in liquid phase depending on the metal and productivity. The chemical vapor deposition process has features that pure metal powder can be obtained and the control of the distribution of powder size is easy. [1,2,3,4,5]"

Australia has, and faces, a growing problem with regard to the ability to meet the demand for liquid fuels from indigenous petroleum resources. The position for natural gas is better but there is no room for complacency. Since the coal resources are relatively extensive, interest in the prospect of producing liquid fuels from coal is in- creasing. The approaches to the production of gaseous and liquid fuels are briefly reviewed and the present status of coal conversion technology is discussed. Many problems remain to be solved and it is estimated (in the USA) that another 8-10 years will be required before any of the processes for liquid fuel production are considered sufficiently efficient and viable to go to a demonstration plant. Coals represent complex feedstocks and the effects of variations in coal properties on oil-from-coal processes are not fully understood. The thermal efficiencies of various coal conversion processes are considered in relation to their impact on coal requirements. The production of Australia's present requirement for liquid fuels by the only commercial process in operation would require a four-fold expansion in the local consumption of coal. Any assessment of the suitability of oil-from-coal processes currently under development overseas for Austra- lian coals and requirements must take heed of the differences in coal properties and motivation. The economic via- bility of processes for producing oil from coal will continue to be uncertain because of the large difference between the World price for crude oil and the actual production cost.

In a laboratory study of grinding and classification of silica sand, a satisfactory means of producing the medium-fine specification sand desired by producers of flint-glass containers was developed. The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.
