Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. The economic viability of base metal and gold production projects at Chillagoe, North Queensland has been elusive or difficult to achieve. Because of isolation and low grades metallurgical efficiency has always been essential. This paper, concentrates on the Chillagoe Railway and Mines Company's operations from 1898 to 1914 and Elders Resources Limited's current developmental operations at Red Dome. The technological methods of concentrating, smelting and refining the copper, silver, lead and zinc by the Chillagoe Company will be outlined as well as their understanding of the geological aspects of the ore bodies and the stock market speculation. The Chillagoe Company failed in its economic management but developed the region. Elders Resources have successfully redeveloped the region including fostering the tourist potential of the area through their expert financial, engineering and metallurgical strategies within the external economic parameters of the Pacific Region.

A method is proposed for the determination of antimony in ores. Antimony is volatilized as antimony iodide by heating with ammonium iodide at a controlled temperature.The fusion mixture is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the antimony content is measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an air/ acetylene flame. The time taken for analysis when comparedwith existing fusion and separation procedures is considerably reduced. Cations and anions likely to be present in antimony ores were also studied for possible interference effects but were not found to interfere.

Gold deportment and ore characterisation studies are key tools in gaining an appropriate understanding of complex gold ores for process development and optimisation. These studies have historically involved imprecise chemical methods with slow and costly optical microscopy for gold identification. The traditional approach requires highly skilled petrographers, is prone to human error, and is not scalable, reducing the usefulness in practical analysis. The proposed methodology utilises a decision tree and knowledge base in a staged approach to gold ore characterisation, building up progressively more detailed information about the sample mineralogy, gold deportment and key mineral properties, as the process is followed. Whilst the automated QEMSCAN« system is used for mineral and gold identification, interactive and focused data analyses are used to give more efficient and accurate results. This is complemented by smart sample preparation and chemical methods to enhance and validate the data, making the staged approach methodology reliable, scalable and therefore practical and economical.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

The Karara iron ore project is a magnetite operation consist of open pit mining and concentrator to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The concentrator has adopted three stages of comminution, ie fine crushing in the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), primary ball milling and fine grinding in the TowerMill plus magnetic separation in between these comminution devices. Since 2014, the concentrator has increased the plant feed rate by 18 per cent. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 13 per cent to a Bond work index value of 15 kWh/t that led to a coarser flotation feed. Karara Mine has decided to shift the comminution workload from the primary ball mill to the TowerMill circuit by bypassing the 100 µm fine screen in between the ball mill and TowerMill circuits. This action has increased the circuit feed particle size distribution with a top size close to 1 mm. The specific energy consumption of the TowerMill circuit was approximately 3.4 kWh/t, and the circuit product sizes (P80) were ranged between 38 and 45 µm. A joint process improvement exercise was carried out to reduce the circuit product size closer to the magnetite liberation size, ie 35 µm. Among the activities were circuit audit, recommendation for improvement, modelling and simulation, multicomponent analysis, implementation of recommendations and quantification of the improvement. One of the key findings was the density effect of multicomponent minerals in the hydrocyclone. The analysis revealed that the low density coarser gangue minerals were bypassed to the hydrocyclone overflow stream that has resulted in a coarser particle size distribution. Meanwhile, more than 20 per cent of fine (-35 µm) high-density magnetite particles were recycled back to the mill through the hydrocyclone underflow stream and increased the circulating load. Based on these outcomes, several recommendations such as conversion to bottom feed configuration, use of smaller grinding media, high operating hydrocyclone pressure and additional grinding power to the TowerMill circuit were made to improve the overall circuit performances. Karara Mine has prioritised to implement those recommendations that have a minimal financial implication. Full-scale plant trials with bottom feed configuration and 17 mm grinding media were conducted to evaluate its performances. These trials have indicated that the grinding efficiency in the TowerMill was enhanced by 10 – 30 per cent. In May 2017, all the five TowerMills were converted to the bottom feed configuration. In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Many thousands of blast holes, at many different mines, are represented by the examples given in the attached tables; to give further examples would only mean, unnecessary repetition. The influence of strongly chemisorbed solutes such as oxygen and sulphur on the rates of reactions at the gas-liquid iron interface is briefly reviewed. Deductions from recent studies of the rates of decarbur- ization of carbon-saturated liquid iron indicate ideal adsorption behaviour for sulphur over a wide temperature and composition range. This is in fair accord with available infor- mation on surface tensions in the Fe-C-S system. Previously unpublished results for the kinetics of the 14C02-CO exchange reaction are in accord with ideal absorption of oxygen on liquid iron. The derived value for the ideal adsorption coefficient of oxygen at 1550¦C is in quantitative agreement with measurements of the depression of surface tension in the Fe-0 system. Consideration is given to the applicability of such results to the violently agitated systems of steelmaking.

Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.

As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the `role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the con- stant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. Both of these effects result in a arper flame front and minimise the chance heat and combustion fronts being mismatched. is theory is supported by sintering results tained by Sulphide Corporation. Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. We outline a first version of an ambitious goal: The world's first horizontal (matrix-independent) generic sampling standard. The specific needs and requirements are overwhelming, as all the world's analytical standards follow strict matrix or material type classification pigeonholes, leading to a plethora of analytical standards. One could rightly expect a similar multiplication regarding sampling standards, yet the singular HORIZONTAL is aimed at being truly generic. Also the existing style of standards writing is cumbersome and partly contradictory. The current work is presently being pursued in CEN and European Union standardisation regimens, for which reason full disclosure and publication is not allowed. Respecting this constraint, we unofficially present selected key issues involved in developing HORIZONTAL: The objective and scope of a horizontal sampling standard is to delineate the minimum set of principles and procedures needed to guarantee documented representative sampling for all types of materials. The horizontal standard is designed for two types of use: 1. auditing/assessing/ improving the reliability of an existing sampling procedure, and 2. design and implementation of a new sampling procedure (new lot type). The principles in this standard are all derived from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), but the standard is far from a mere collection of TOS principles. Representativeness is a characteristic of the sampling process, not of samples themselves. For practical purposes, the horizontal standard follows the fundamental distinction between 'stationary lots' (0-D, 2-D, 3-D lots) and 'dynamic lots' (within TOS aka process sampling - including extended, non-moving 1-D lots). TOS' principles of 'correctness' must never be broken at any stage, lest representativeness is irretrievably lost. The horizontal standard is not written in the mandatory fashion for legally binding matrix-specific standards, eg ISO - for the present overarching purpose a different style had to be developed. The standard must be immediately understandable in full, which merits special demands, eg extensive use of didactic illustrations. HORIZONTAL introduces an all-inclusive sampling variability measure, Relative Sampling Variance (RSV) which is for sampling of stationary lots as variographics is for process sampling - RSV is to be used as a quality criterion for any stationary sampling procedure as applied to a specific heterogeneity (lot/material). The target for this standard is all individuals, companies, organisations and regulatory bodies who are responsible for sampling: technicians, process engineers, laboratory personal, academic and industrial scientists as well as project leaders, technical managers/directors and top managers. Based on current R&D we illustrate the principles promulgated by HORIZONTAL with cases from exploration and mining of minerals commodities, a Finnsh 'Autosampler' at work in the mining context (RSV) as well as sampling equipment for use in the cement and mineral commodities industries. A small-charge rapid excavation system employing a novel penetrating cone fracture initiation and propagation technique has been demonstrated to be capable of excavating the hardest of rocks at efficiencies (energy per unit volume of rock removed) four to ten times greater than attainable with conventional drill and blast. Significant enhancements to the concept developed during the research efforts include the use of propellant rather than explosive charges and a device for containing the charges and effectively sealing the shot-holes. The experimental results, including the excavation of several tons of hard rock in a research mine, have confirmed the novel breakage process and provided a data base for the design of a continuous hard rock mining machine based upon the concept. The small-charge excavation system would be attractive for civil construc-tion operations where sensitive structures, equipment and personnel would be in close proximity to the excavation face. The system would be attractive for selective mining operations where the ore rock could be fragment-ed and processed separately from the barren country rock. The barren rock could then be backfilled underground and eliminated from the traditional hauling and milling operations.

The correct assessment and understanding of geotechnical conditions is fundamental to mine design and, hence, successful (safe and efficient) mine planning, design and operations. However, this assessment and understanding is simply not possible unless there is a sound appreciation of the geology of the project. This paper addresses geological uncertainty in mine engineering and its communication, and shows that a mining project that does not take geology properly into account in the engineering phase is fraught. Uncertainty levels become excessive, which leads to hazards and consequential risks in design and operations in terms of both safety and efficiency. Several examples, both positive and negative, are provided to make the point. The paper concludes that mining geologists must become more overtly cognisant of the influence of geology on mine engineering. Equally importantly, mining (and geotechnical) engineers must communicate better with their geological colleagues to ensure that they (the engineers) have a clear understating of the geological issues affecting their operations. The engineers must know how to ask the right questions of the geologists. Engineers who do not understand and take account of geology in their designs and operations are failing the expectations of stakeholders.

Attempts to rationalise the geological environment of nickel sulphide deposits associated with Archaean ultrabasic rocks has produced much speculation as to the origin of the sulphides and the relative importance of geochemical, mineralogical, textural and structural characteristics of the host rocks. From an economic viewpoint the object of such work is to establish geological criteria which can be used as an exploration guide. Exploration procedure for nickel sulphide mineralisation of the 'Kambalda type' (Hudson, 1972), which occurs at or near the basal contact of Archaean ultramafic flow units and lenses consisted of geological mapping, surface prospecting with soil sampling and rock geochemistry.
