This study presents a comprehensive thermodynamic optimisation and sustainability analysis of the secondary copper smelting process for Waste Printed Circuit Board (WPCB) recycling. The study investigates various scenarios with different proportions of WPCB in the input stream, ranging from 0 per cent to 100 per cent. Through thermodynamic modelling using FactSage™ version 8.1, the optimisation process is conducted in three stages. The results of the thermodynamic modelling indicate that the best-case scenario for WPCB recycling is achieved with a 40 per cent proportion of WPCB in the input stream. This case exhibits a maximum copper recovery of 99.93 per cent while minimising the formation of other waste. In addition to the thermodynamic analyses, environmental factors such as the carbon emission index and resource utilisation efficiency are studied. The 40 per cent WPCB recycling case exhibits a resource utilisation efficiency of 93.055 per cent and a carbon emission rate of 0.133. The present investigation highlights the significant benefits of a 40 per cent WPCB recycling scenario through a secondary copper smelting process in terms of base metal recovery and energy efficiency, thus emphasising its potential for sustainable PCB waste management and resource utilisation.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. This paper presents the scientific framework underpinning the resource valuation and optimisation model (RVOM). The RVOM is a partial differential equation based real options software package, which helps mine owners optimally plan their operations, understand their project risks, and make defensible valuations. This is achieved in the presence of both financial and physical uncertainty, as well as processing capacity constraints. The RVOM can be applied to any multi-ore mine, open pit or otherwise, where the block-order of extraction has already been planned using existing software tools such as the Gemcom WhittleÖ strategic mine planning package. The RVOM can also take account of multiple commodities within a single mine, and multiple forms of price behaviour. The three key outputs from the RVOM are: valuation, optimal decision and probability of decision. A decision takes account of upfront costs, and can include an unlimited number of transitions between: normal operation, expanded operation, care and maintenance and abandonment (and variants thereof). The RVOM then employs stochastic process theory to determine the probability of reaching these decisions. This gives the mine operators clear indications as to where their risks lie, aiding their mine planning. A clear example of the RVOMs usage to a case-study gold mine is presented, demonstrating its broad applicability, the added value it can create and how users can easily make use of the RVOMÆs state-of-the-art algorithmic engine.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

Large-scale open cut mining in the Bowen Basin has been undertaken for over 40 years. During this period, improved mechanical capability and economics have allowed extraction to greater depths, resulting in post-mining landforms of increasing height. Rehabilitation practitioners face significant challenges in stabilising these landforms and require a comprehensive understanding of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures strata likely to be disposed of during mining. Knowledge regarding the potential behaviour of differing spoil materials (following disturbance) provides a rationale to maximise short- to medium-term surface stability of constructed landforms by identification, salvage and advantageous reuse of cladding resources as a means to minimise erosional risks.CITATION:Emmerton, B, Burgess, J, Baumgartl, T and Erskine, P, 2016. The Northparkes, Endeavour 26 orebody is a porphyry copperûgold deposit and comprises a moderately to well jointed rock mass characterised by gypsum veining, the intensity of which decreases with depth. The top 480 metres of the orebody is currently being mined by block caving, the undercut dimensions measuring 196 metres in length by 180 metres in width. Continuous caving was never achieved after the completion of the undercut thus cave inducement techniques were sought to maintain caving so as to safely sustain production. The use of hydraulic fracturing as a cave inducement tool was successfully trialled in December 1997 using existing exploration boreholes located midway up the current lift. Subsequent fracturing campaigns have enjoyed various degrees of success and have yielded in excess of seven million tonnes of ore at a significantly lower cost than conventional cave inducement techniques. Monitoring of both the hydraulic fracture system and the rock mass response has provided considerable insight into the geometry, growth and influence of hydraulic fracture networks above the Northparkes block cave, and has initiated additional research into the use of hydraulic fracturing in other mining methods.

Pike River Coal Limited is in the process of developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction. The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park.   As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of: +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Reverse sensitivity is a critical issue for all extractive activities. Extractive industries can only establish in the location of the particular resource sought to be extracted. Avoiding a location near sensitive activities (such as residential activities) may, therefore, be more difficult for extractive industries, than for other industry (such as dairy factories).   This paper focuses on the following matters: +        principles to be derived from case law, +       district and regional council approaches managing reverse sensitivity effects, and +        avoiding, remedying or mitigating reverse sensitivity effects in the future.

About 90 per cent of the pre-mining BIF-hosted iron ore resource of the Hamersley Province of Western Australia is of the Phanerozoic supergene martite-goethite type. The remaining ten per cent formed as supergene deposits at ~2000 ¦ 200 Ma, and were later modified by burial to form the Proterozoic martite-microplaty hematite ores. The supergene-metamorphic segment of this general unified model has been challenged by three recently published hypogene-based genetic models for the hematite ores, all requiring meteoric oxidation to produce the ore. The most recent and detailed, by Taylor et al (2001), is based on data from the small Southern Batter and North deposits of the Mount Tom Price mine. The authors proposed that during Stage 1 æoverpressured bicarbonate-saturated basin brines from the dolomite aquifer of the Wittenoom FormationÆ at 150 - 250¦C, dissolved free silica from BIF to produce a stratigraphically thinned, magnetite-carbonate-silicate-apatite rock. In Stage 2, meteoric oxidation of siderite to secondary microplaty hematite + ankerite, and magnetite to martite, at unspecified elevated temperatures and pressures, was followed by carbonate leaching (Stage 3). Finally, during Stage 4, weathering with removal of apatite, produced the typical low-phosphorus, porous martite-microplaty hematite ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. However, evidence of both microplaty hematite and martite reduced to magnetite, and of infill silica, apatite, and ferroan chlorite, with late-stage pyrite, in the pore space of martite-microplaty hematite ore, shows that the hydrothermal activity at Mount Tom Price is a post-ore event. Neither pyrite nor ferroan chlorite could resist the oxidation required to form hematite ore. Recrystallisation of microplaty hematite in these infilled zones to a typically coarser form than present in most of the normal ores, is a further supporting factor. A more credible, post-ore alternative to the hypogene genetic model is suggested here. Re-exposure to leaching by ground water of the metamorphosed ore deposits in the Phanerozoic resulted in the partial removal of remnant goethite. Localised modifications in the porous BIF/ore contact zones were driven by exothermic oxygen/pyrite/carbon reactions in the footwall Mt McRae Shale. Cool descending oxygenated meteoric water in the permeable ore horizons, acted as one limb of a thermal convective cell. In the other limb, heated reducing solutions rose through the permeable contact zones, to produce the observed localised modifications of BIF and ore. Expelled silica from the carbonatised BIF invaded adjacent porous ore to form erratic silicified ore zones, and to produce the local quartz vein systems found in the associated overlying BIF.

This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. Gold-rich porphyry copper deposits areimportant sources of gold in the circum-Pacific region: 26 major deposits contain >7000 tonnes of gold. The deposits occur in a variety of subduction-related settings, and may be underlain by crust that is undergoing either extension or compression and that is either oceanic or cratonic in character. The deposits are associated intimately with composite porphyry stocks, which commonly were emplaced into coeval andesitic volcanic piles. The stocks range in composition from low-K calc-alkaline through high-K calc-alkaline to potassic alkaline. Much of the copper and gold were introduced as components of K-silicate alteration, which may undergo partial overprinting by intermediate argillic assemblages. Advanced argillic alteration is widespread in the shallow parts of the systems whereas sericitic alteration at deeper levels tends to be restricted. Gold distribution generally follows that of copper, which is present mainly as chalcopyrite with or without bornite. The gold is in the native state and occluded by cr in close proximity to the copper-iron and/or iron sulphides. The magmas and metals necessary for the generation of gold-rich porphyry deposits were derived mainly from subcrustal sources, with the subducted slab believed to play a pivotal role.
