This paper describes studies into two particular aspects of the Lochiel deposit which formed part of feasibility level geot2chnical and hydrogeological investigations for proposed open cut mine development. The two aspects were depressurisation of thick beds of silt located through the profile and the determination of characteristics and origins of soil structure and their effect on pit stability. The studies were very detailed and multi disciplinary and highlight the integration of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology and mining that is required for mine development studies. It is considered that as more marginal deposits are developed throughout the world the demands for efficient economic mining together with in- creasing scales of operation will require simi- lar types of studies. As such the studies pre- sented herein are likely to be a forerunner to a,emerging trend for development of open pit mines in difficult ground and water conditions.

The laboratory-scale reduction of fixed beds of iron ore pellets has been investigated over a range of experimental conditions. The effects of reduction temperatures, gas compos- itions and flowrates on 1) the rate of reduction and 2) the physical properties of the metallized products after reduction are being studied as part of a general programme aimed at the evaluation of the use of gaseous reductants for the direct reduction of Australian iron ores. This paper deals primar- ily with the effects of temperature on the rate of reduction using a H2/CO gas mixture. The physical properties of the metallized products such as strength after reduction, abrasion resistance and porosity are presented as functions of the reducing temperature.

The procedure used for Truck Maintenance is described systematically in this paper. Emphasis is given to manpower required, work facilities, daily maintenance and oil sampling procedure. Scheduled Preventative Maintenance Service, Electrical Service, Component Change, Truck Overhaul and Outside Contractors are also discussed. The system used, achieves the required results with an average haul truck availability in 1981 of 87.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Situated on the Island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, the Bougainville Copper mine nestles in a valley near the crest of the Crown Prince Range, between 600 m and 980 m above sea level. The mine is serviced by two towns, Arawa - an open town on the Coast and Panguna at the Mine Site. Currently Bougainville Copper operates an open pit mine removing an average of 198 000 dry metric tonnes of material per day (115 000 tonnes ore and 83 000 tonnes of waste) with a fleet of electric shovels and 154 tonne electric haul trucks.

The recent installation of top gas temperature probes in blast furnaces at Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. - Port Kembla, has provided the means for studying radial gas flow distribution in blast furnace shafts. This paper describes the top gas temperature probes and outlines their development and results of initial studies aimed at obtaining a suitable relationships between temperature profiles and furnace parameters. The effects of various combinations of burden materials have been outlined by the results reported. The use of probes has also helped to clarify the effect of casting cycles on furnace operation leading to increased emphasis on the reduction of the interval between gun-up and drill-out. Areas for future studies are also broadly Outlined.

The patterns of flow of reaction gases through the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter were simulated in a 1:20 scale model using a flow of water. Particular features of the flow down the reaction shaft, through the settling chamber and into the uptake leading to the waste-heat boiler were examined. Inferences were made concerning the effects of the patterns of flow on the efficiency of the smelting reaction, on the entrainment of dust by the gas stream and on the erosion of the refractory lining of the furnace. In addition, the effects of geometrical modifications to the arrangement of the concentrate burners and to the profile of the settling chamber were explored by making these changes to the model and observing the resulting variations in the patterns of flow.

Following the perception by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company of a need to further beneficiate a fines product, and preliminary metallurgical testing to demonstrate the feasibility of such beneficiation, a comparison was made of the various configurations of cyclonic heavy medium separators available. This comparison consisted of (i) a pilot plant test in which a dynawhirlpool (DWP) and a pump fed cyclone were compared, and (ii) a survey of operating plants using the systems under consideration. Little metallurgical difference was found-between the different systems. The gravity fed cyclone configuration was finally chosen based on a particular need to minimise degradation of ore and on a desire, in so isolated a location, to use established and locally supported technology.

Stressed steel cables, similar to those used in pre-stressed concrete, have been used for rock mass reinforcement, in civil engineering, for many years. This type of reinforcement has been attempted for open pit wall support, on several occasions, but has never gained wide acceptance as a practical approach because of high cost and complexity of installation in a mining environment. On the other hand, untensioned, fully grouted cable dowels (cable bolts) have gained wide acceptance for ground support in underground mining and it is perhaps surprising that this technique has not been used to a greater degree in open pit mining. The first systematic application of this technique in Australia was at the Mary Kathleen uranium mine in 1976, where it was spectacularly successful in maintaining steep stable walls in a jointed rock mass with unfavourably dipping structures. Cable bolting, and other techniques, are now being used to an increasing degree for wall support in both small and large open pits, for two basic applications: 1. stabilisation of potentially unstable sections of a wall, or 2. to allow steeper walls and reduce waste stripping volumes. In virtually every situation, wall rein- forcement has significant economic as well as technical advantages. The paper describes the development of the techniques, the mechanisms of wall support, the methods used, and discusses several case histories of its application to Australian open pit mines.

Three-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method) simulations were conducted in order to examine the performance of screw conveyors, which are installed to transport bulk materials as parts of many industrial machines, including mining and construction machinery. To apply the DEM to the analysis of screw conveyors, we added a spiral object and cylinder objects, which correspond to the helical screw, the casing pipe, and the driving shaft of a screw conveyor. These objects are represented analytically to enhance the precision and efficiency when calculating the interaction between objects and particles. Simulations were conducted for some real applications: inclined and other types of screws, as well as the basic types (horizontal and vertical). Results were compared with previous work and empirical equations. It is concluded that this method is sufficiently well-developed and useful to analyse various kinds of screw conveyors.

The performance of a hydrocyclone treating fine coal has been examined over a wide range of feed and operating conditions.The results were expressed in terms of partition curves from which the water split to the oversize flowstream,the corrected separation size and reduced partition curves were determined-.The following conclusions were obtained. (a) The water split to the oversize flowstream was found to be dependent upon the vortex finder and spigot diameters of the cyclone and the flowrate and solids content of the feed slurry. (b) The corrected separation size was dependent on the solids content of the feed,and the vortex finder and spigot diameters.The hydraulic pressure (or flowrate) of the feed slurry did not have a significant effect.This phenomenon could be explained in terms of crowding of the particles at the Spigot.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to obtain data on the explosive character- istics of selected coals mined in New South Wales. Seven coal seams were sampled and the volatile matter content of the coals tested varied between 28 and 37 percent. A mod- ified Hartmann apparatus with a volume of 1250 ml was used in the investigation. Dust clou' generation was produced by an air blast delivered radially through a mushroom type valve and the ignition source was a-continuous A.C. spark produced by a 20 000 V, 50 mA transformer. The coal dust parameters invest- igated were the maximum pressure developed, the average and maximum rates of pressure rise at dust concentrations between 200 and 1500 3 g/m.

Optical microscopy is a basic but still indispensable tool for examining mineral parageneses in ores. The design and concepts behind the reflected light ore microscope have obviously not been subject to spectacular technical evolutions in the last decades. However, digital imaging capabilities have opened new and stimulating perspectives for automated mineral identification. Recent works in developing multispectral image analysis (Pirard, 2004) have demonstrated its superior potential with respect to conventional colour imaging, but at the same time reconciliation with spectroscopic databases such as the Quantitative Data File III (Criddle and Stanley, 1993) still needs a more in-depth investigation as well as the possibility to extend both imaging and spectroscopy into the near infrared domain. In this paper, the authors present results gained from multispectral imaging in the range between 400 and 1000 nm together with spectrophotometric data from the QDFIII database, with an emphasis on minerals that cannot be easily distinguished in the visible spectrum.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Despite nearly a half-century of continuous production, the low-grade iron ore (taconite) deposits of North America remain economically competitive sources of raw materials for the domestic steel industry. The continued viability of these mature integrated mining-concentrationagglomeration complexes requires highly efficient utilisation of assets, especially the mineral resource. At Cleveland-CliffsÆ five North American managed operations, enhanced ore characterisation techniques are playing a critical role in their continued success. Due to the low-grade nature and complex mineralogical composition of these deposits, ore characterisation cannot solely rely on assay grades. Historically, taconite ore characterisation has augmented assay grades with bench-scale concentration tests to quantify recoverable mineral. The economic necessity for improvements in mill efficiencies and final product quality has mandated significantly greater knowledge of ore-related impacts. Cliffs Technology Center has met this challenge by developing a variety of novel iron ore characterisation techniques. The applications developed include both in situ and laboratory procedures, plus unconventional data integration methods uniquely suited for these deposits. This paper details the evolution of these novel ore characterisation techniques and their application to each phase of the operation: mining-concentrating-and pelletising. The improved ore characterisation techniques have contributed to successes at individual Cleveland-Cliffs managed operations including mineral recoveries exceeding 95 per cent and productivity increases exceeding ten per cent while consistently achieving customer product quality objectives.

Utah Development Company operates a mine at Blackwater with a present annual production of 4 000 000 tonnes of coking coal. Mineable seams outcropping on the company's lease are part of the Permian Mammoth Rangal Coal Measures. Current operations are based pre- dominantly on the Main Lower seam. Coal quality variations occur along the seam strike, in the direction of seam dip, within the seam plies and in isolated anomalous areas. Raw coal of non-specification quality is washed to reduce ash and sulphur and to improve the free swelling index. Raw coal meeting specification quality is sent directly to product, by-passing the washplant. Careful attention to mining, coal preparation and product blending is necessary to ensure that the combined product meets specifications.

During 2003, different plastic stemming plugs (Cats«, Stemtite«, and Taponex«) were tested in EscondidaÆs Mina Sur, to determine the effect on gas retention time when used in conjunction with drill cuttings in production shots with a blasthole diameter of 10 5/8ö. Longer retention times were expected to provide greater fragmentation and muckpile looseness. In order to determine which plug showed the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, 17 trials were carried out û in the first seven tests, only the Cats were used, in the following five tests, a combination of Cats, Taponex and Stemtite were used, and in the last three tests, only the Taponex plug was used. In the last two blasts, drill cuttings were used without stemming plugs as a benchmarking exercise. Blasts were filmed with a high-speed camera, which could record the detonation times of holes using rolls of shock tube tied to stakes at the hole collars, to act as flash indicators. The camera allowed measurement of the time between charge detonation and the commencement of stemming ejection. In order to obtain the statistical parameters of each one of the stemming plugs used in the 17 trials carried out, the Minitab software was used and a data base was created for it, corresponding to each stemming configuration with the retention time obtained from the filming. Once it was determined which stemming plug provided the greatest enhancement of stemming retention, the impact on the fragmentation was analysed using the WipFrag image analysis software to estimate the muckpile size distribution.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. Both of these effects result in a arper flame front and minimise the chance heat and combustion fronts being mismatched. is theory is supported by sintering results tained by Sulphide Corporation. The paper describes the development leading to the bucket wheel excavator systems now used in the Latrobe Valley and refers in particular to the new S.E.C.V. dredgers Nos. 14 and 15 which will be employed in the Loy Yang open cut. The design concept and operating possibilities of these dredgers are described in detail with reference to the machine characteristics designed for the operating conditions in the Latrobe Valley. The design is compared with units of similar capacity in open cuts of other countries.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. This paper reviews factors involved in the feasibility stage of underground mine project development. Emphasis is placed on the need to first select the best method of extraction and make the most accurate assessment of the expected output even with the uncertainties which may exist in structural interpretation, ground stress, geotechnical factors, and industrial conditions. The subsequent engineering planning should be undertaken from the point of view of the face requirements and is subject to constraints imposed by the method of work and nature of the deposit and, in the case of access, to surface constraints and services.

Preliminary petrographic investigations of eight Upper Permian coal seams of the Muja sub-basin, Collie Coalfield, reveal that the coal is high in inertinite and relatively low in vitrinite and exinite contents. The exinite content of Collie coal is relatively high when compared to other Australian coal of similar age. In addition the mineral matter content of the coal is very much lower than comparable Permian coal of Eastern Australia. The higher exinite content could be attributed to the type of Glossopteris flora, and the lower mineral matter content to the environment of deposition postulated for the Collie Coal Measures.
