The idea of veneering rich yellow gold alloys with a low-melting, high expansion porcelain, has been a driving force for metal-ceramic research in dentistry. Since 1990, with the advent of the Carrara System (1), a low firing temperature veneering ceramic allowed the use of gold alloys with a lower content of platinum and palladium than the traditional gold-platinum ceramic alloys and thus a richer yellow color. The earlier high gold-platinum ceramic alloys contained at least 12 percent platinum group metals to allow for dimensional stability when firing the relatively high melting traditional ceramics. This amount of platinum group metals gave the alloys a greyish tinge which made them unattractively steel colored and difficult to present as ?high gold alloys?. In the 90?s the new generation universal low-melting, high expansion gold alloys gained market share at a steady rate, starting in Germany, and have now for a great part replaced the traditional gold-platinum alloys (Fig. 1). The first alloys contained 75 wt-% gold and up to 9 wt-% platinum or palladium. They provided a metal-ceramic system in which a gold alloy having an aesthetic yellow colour is fired on with a dental porcelain tailored thereto. The tailoring is meant in respect of compatible coefficients of thermal expansion, and compatible melting or softening points of metal and porcelain. The major concerns in the beginning were with thermal stability during firing, the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy against the porcelain (compatibility) and the yellow color. In a later stage, alloys with gold contents in the range of 50-60 wt-% gold were developed in analogy with the pale yellow gold-reduced alloys that were formerly used for crown & bridge work and the white gold-reduced alloys used for metal veneering where gold was substituted in part by palladium.

Teaching mining, metallurgy, and geology preceded that of the other engineering disciplines. The first School of Mines was founded in 1756 in Potosi (Fig. 1) in New Spain (now Bolivia), 38 years before the first Polytechnic School (École Polytechnique) was founded in Paris. The schools of mines were also pioneers in the teaching of chem- istry. The teaching staff at these schools cre- ated the basic literature on metallurgy, mining, and geology. They analyzed and dis- covered numerous minerals and discovered the metals tungsten, beryllium, chromium, uranium, zirconium, vanadium, indium, and germanium. The history of some of the first schools is given together with biographies of some of their distinguished teaching staff.

In Turkey, the increasing demand for lignite has necessitated an increased emphasis on both lignite production and recovery. This emphasis has resulted in a gradual increase in the application of the retreat longwall mining method for both its product recovery and productivity benefits. Also, in order to maximize the recovery of the natural resources and to increase total production, it is necessary to take advantage of underground reserve before abandoning the mine. This means that at the end of the life of the mine, the main drift safety pillar and the shaft pillar will generally be extracted. This investigation a preliminary study of the stability of the main drift and the shaft at the Hustas Mine as the safety pillars are extracted. In this study, field surveys belonging to the underground colliery of Hustas Co. in Soma have been investigated with the help of LAMODEL working under the Laminated Displacement Discontinuity principle for the models calibrated as a results of physical model and finite element analyses. The convenience of Laminated Displacement Discontinuity Analysis has been researched in such studies. The results out of the models have been coherent with the previous studies.

Arsenic extraction from Chilean copper concentrates up to nearly 99% was achieved, using hydrothermal reactions. Arsenic appears in nature in more than 200 mineral species, being arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4), and tennantite (Cu12As4S13) the most common species. In addition, arsenic is present in a large amount of copper concentrates, produced in northern Chile. Medical statistics show that in northern Chile, the amount of cancer to the lung, skin and bladder are the highest in the country. The latter situation, demonstrates the importance of studying metallurgical processes that do not generate atmospheric pollution. The hydrometallurgical processes such as hydrothermal treatment in autoclave reactors, do not produce gaseous emissions. On the other hand, the arsenic remains in solution from where it can be transformed in scorodite by widely known methods. Previous works about hydrothermal treatment of enargite have shown the feasibility of transforming the enargite of the copper concentrates into chalcocite or mineral species of the chalcocite family such as djurleite, digenite and for this reason enrich the concentrate in copper and pass the arsenic to solution. For this research, two Chilean copper concentrates were used, concentrate 1 with 5.5% arsenic and concentrate 3 with 1.8% arsenic. These concentrates were subjected to a complete chemical and mineralogical characterization. Later these concentrates were carry out to batch tests of hydrothermal treatment. Also, these concentrates were subjected to grinding to have different particle sizes. For the hydrothermal tests, a liter capacity Autoclave Engineer reactor was used. Characteristic of this reactor was the maximum temperature 350°C, 5000 PSI pressure, and 900 rpm agitation speed. Kinetic tests were carried out with the two concentrates maintaining the same solid: liquid relationship, the same agitation velocity and the variables studied were treatment temperature, time of reaction, concentration of copper in the solution and grain size of the concentrates. The conclusions of the study indicated arsenic extraction of the order of 93.98% from the concentrate 1 and arsenic extraction of the order of 98.74% from concentrate 3. After the hydrothermal treatment, the solids and solutions were characterized chemically, by electron microscopy and X ray diffraction. Also the solids were characterized by grainsize through a particle size analyzer (MICROTRAC). Results of batch treatment shows that arsenic can be release almost completely from real copper concentrates using this hydrothermal process and the next stage will be a scale up process in order obtain results for pilot plant design. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is an impurity that appears associated with copper minerals forming enargite, tennantite, tetrahedrite, and that due to the pyrometallurgical treatment either in conversion or roasting furnaces, it goes into the atmosphere together with the sulfur dioxide. A great quantity of literature can be found to eliminate arsenic or try to separate arsenic from copper. The methods used are mainly leaching processes with or without pressure (Padilla, Jerez & Ruiz, 2015) with different reagents like chloride media (Herreros, Fuentes, Quiroz & Viñals, 2003) or chloride media with sulphuric acid (Riveros & Dutrizac, 2008) or sodium hypochlorite (Mihajlovic, Strbac, Zivkovic, Kovacevic & Stehernik, 2007). It is known too that Chile is the first copper producer in the world and a great quantity of its minerals are in the north of the country, in Antofagasta.

On line monitoring and diagnosis systems of process operating performance are becoming an important part of industrial programs, leading to improve process operation and therefore product quality over time. In processes, such as the contact section of a sulphuric acid plant, a large number of input variables, highly correlated, are presented. These characteristics usually pose more difficulties in modelling the process for monitoring and diagnosis purposes. Multivariate statistical projection methods, such as Main Component Analysis, have been proposed to effectively deal with these situations. The application of these ideas to a section of a 2350 MTD sulphuric acid plant, located at the Caletones Smelter, including dry tower, gas blowers, catalytic reactor and S03 absorber processes, is discussed here. A PCA model with eight main components is used for monitoring and diagnosis of more than seventy operating variables. Hottelling's T2 and Q residuals test were used for detecting measurement problems in relevant variables, and for identifying which set of variables were responsible for driving the process outside its normal operating region. Furthermore, considerable information for the correction of the tested operating problems was given by the use of these techniques.

"IntroductionThis chapter is intended to provide information on the operation and maintenance of several pieces of equipment used in heavy media separation. Most heavy media separation circuits, particularly those involving bath separators can be considered as high maintenance areas. Because of this the efficient operation and maintenance of these circuits is very important if the cost per ton of material treated is to be kept to an acceptable level.Heavy media separation (HMS), is a process used to separate particles of different specific gravities. Under laboratory conditions the ideal way to separate two types of particles which have different specific gravities is to suspend them in a heavy liquid which has a specific gravity between those of the two types of particles. Those particles with the lower specific gravities will float on top of the liquid while the higher specific gravity material will sink to the bottom. Given enough time and a sufficient volume of heavy liquid this process will be essentially insensitive to the sizes of the particles involved.Heavy media separation circuits make use of the same principles described above. The material to be treated is introduced into a mixture of finely ground solids, called media, and water which takes the place of the heavy liquid; the mixture of solids and water is known as medium. The separating force can be either gravity or centrifugal force. The type of solids used as media varies but it is usually a high specific gravity material such as magnetite, galena or ferrosilicon.Heavy media separation is used extensively in the cleaning of coal and to a lesser extent as a preconcentration step in base metal and iron ore operations."

"This text consists of two parts, comments on "Classification and Reporting of Mineral Resources for High-Nugget Effect Gold Vein Deposits," by S.C. Dominy, P.R. Stephenson and A.E. Annels, Volume 10, No. 3, pp. 215-233, and related comments on some features of the JORC Code.This paper is, in many respects, a very elaborate and valuable account of the problems encountered in the estimation and classification of high-nugget gold deposits. However, in some key areas, it appears to fall short of its objective to help "resolve satisfactorily most issues" and "contribute to improved estimation and classification" (abstract). One must realize that high-nugget effect gold deposits constitute a very narrow field, despite the occasional bonanzas. This is a field of mostly smaller sized deposits, where limited success and a significantly higher rate of failure occur relative to larger deposits of mostly lower grade. This is shown by the six deposits described in the paper. Thanks for contributing to greater understanding of these complex and nevertheless challenging deposits."

Electrochemical behavior of an X-80 pipeline steel, including frequency-sweep electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS), time-sweep EIS at a constant frequency and open-circuit potential (OCP) monitor, was investigated using four-point bending specimens subjected to a stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) test in a near-neutral pH environment. The capacitive loop became smaller with test duration, revealing an increase in the corrosion rate. The resistance obtained in the constant-frequency EIS test showed two regions, of which the region with a remarkable decrease in resistance transformed into a region of slow decrease, whereas the capacitance increased with test time indicating that iron dissolution was fast at first, and then a corrosion product or film formed and covered the surface, leading to the pitting formation.

"IntroductionTrout Lake Mine is located about 5 km north of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited complex at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The mine was brought into production in 1982at the onset of a severe recession in the base metal market. The mine is operated as a joint venture with HBM&S, MMR and SMS.During the first several months of operation it became evident that there were opportunities to reduce costs at the mine significantly, and a productivity improvement subcommittee was formed to make recommendations. The first committee met in January, 1983 and consisted of the mine manager from Hudson Bay Mining, a geological expert and a maintenance expert from Outokumpu Oy, Finland, and a mine manager from Granges, Sweden.Recommendations from this committee were implemented during 1983 and a new subcommittee was constituted in 1984 to continue the work begun the previous year. The committee remains as constituted in 1984 and meets quarterly.The committee consists of M.A . Kirby , manager - Flin Flon Mines, HBM&S; Gustav Hoberstorfer of Mindelco , a Swedish mining consultant retained by Granges; Eero Laatio, mine superintendent of Keretti Mine at Outokumpu Oy in Finland; and Bob Bray, a mining consultant retained by Manitoba Mineral Resources.Many productivity improvements made in the operation are attributed to the work of this committee and other experts retained at various times throughout the mine life."

Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall!This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provinciallevels in the last months.Summary of provincial tax rate changesThe tax changes in this year's provincial budgets were both up and down- but there were far more tax increases than tax cuts.At the corporate tax level, two provinces, New Brunswick and British Columbia, increased their general corporate income tax rate; the former by two percentage points and the latter by one percentage point. Quebec, rather unexpectedly, sharply cut its corporate tax rate on business income, but increased some of its other business taxes at the same time. British Columbia reduced its corporate tax rate on small business income by two percentage points and Saskatchewan by one percentage point."

Geochemical background levels have been established for unmineralized sedimentary rocks that are elsewhere the hosts of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Getchell Trend. The Paleozoic rocks in the Winnemucca Quadrangle consist predominantly of the lower Paleozoicsiliceous and clastic sequences that were carried eastward along the Roberts Mountains thrust during the Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Antler Orogeny and the late Paleozoic Havallah and Pumpernickel sequences brought along the Golconda thrust eastward during early Mesozoic Sonoma Orogeny. Over 260 rock samples were collected from the Paleozoic sequences. Major and trace elements were determined by instrumental methods best suited for the specific elements. The general geochemical features of the Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are discussed in detail with reference to the data of average abundances of elements in sedimentary rocks. The background and threshold values of certain trace elements in sandstone, shale, and carbonate rock of one formation, as well as back-ground levels for the entire sequence were obtained. The characteristic geochemical features of the Paleozoic rocks in this area include: consistently high Ba and low Au contents (1.1 ppb, 1.5 ppb, 1.1ppb Au for average sandstone, shale and carbonate, respectively); generally low contents of those elements which may be of environmental concern such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Plots of major and trace elements suggest that the majority of the Paleozoic clastic rocks are related to a passive-margin tectonic setting. Samples with gold values higher than threshold are considered to have been affected by hydrothermal alteration related to gold mineralization. Most of these samples generally also have higher values of Sb, Hg, V and/or As. These observations support the use of such elements as pathfinders for gold, although V has not been identified as such before. Ba is not effective for gold exploration in this area due to the generally high background value of Ba, even though it may be an important pathfinder elsewhere.

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel's Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. "Cretaceous sands and clays underlie an area of approximately 5,000 km2 in Northern Ontario, southwest of James Bay. The deltaic deposits occur as a wedge of continental sediments to the north of an east-trending fault scarp referred to as the Precambrian Escarpment. They rest on older sedimentary formations of the Moose River Basin (Jurassic, Devonian) and are covered by glacial tills and marine sediments of the Quaternary period. Outcrops are restricted to occasional exposure in the deeply incised riverbeds.In 1975 and 1978, drill programs sponsored by the Ontario Government provided new information on the extent and quality of the deposits. Fourteen holes at approximately 12-km intervals were drilled to a maximum depth of 189 m by reversed- circulation chip drill methods. Some core was obtained as well. Analytical results show that the thickness of Cretaceous deposits exceeds 100m in several instances. Abundant kaolinitic clay and quartz sand of glass-grade quality, both unique materials in Ontario, are available in an area where hydroelectricity and lignite resources combine to enhance the energy outlook.IntroductionThe presence of refractory clay in deeply incised riverbeds in Northern Ontario was known to geologists travelling the rivers as early as 1875. Robert Bell (1877) reports outcrops of clay and lignite on Coal Brook, a tributary of the Missinaibi River. E.B. Borron in 1880 collected a sample of clay from the bed of the Missinaibi River which H.H. Croft of the University of Toronto considered to be ""nearly if not quite, equal to the Cornish clay used in the manufacture of English porcelain"" (Keele, 1920, p. 42). The Cretaceous age of the clay, sand and lignite deposits was determined with the help of plant remains collected by Keele. He referred to the deposits as the Mattagami series, which later became the Mattagami Formation."

"Induced polarization/resistivity and magnetometer surveys have been carried out over the Casmo molybdenite deposit in mountainous terrain of northern British Columbia. Molybdenite occurs in quartz-bearing fractures with or without pyrite along a zone of hydrothermal alteration and intense fracturing, believed to be a northerly dipping fault zone, within medium-grained equigranular and porphyritic quartz monzonite.The molybdenite-bearing zone is characterized by a significant resistivity low, a metal factor high and a subtle IP low flanked by highs outside the mineralized area. Magnetic trends, indicated by a magnetometer survey, generally parallel the zone and strike direction of the different intrusive phases, and have been helpful in delineating contacts and faults in the area.IntroductionThe Casmo molybdenite deposit is 6 km southwest of the asbestos mining town of Cassiar in northern British Columbia, at an elevation of 1,550 metres. Molybdenite was first discovered during the early 1950s and the first important exploration work was done in 1964. Between 1964 and 1971, about 25,000 feet of drilling was done by various operators, as a result of which 33.7 million tons of molybdenite ore was drill indicated at a grade of 0.123%. In 1979, Shell Canada Resources entered into an option agreement with the former operator, New Jersey Zinc Corporation. Shell completed 27,000 feet of diamond drilling between 1979 and 1980 and ha s reported 75 million tonnes of drill-indicated ore with an average grade of 0.13% MoS2• This paper is a case history of IP I resistivity and magnetometer surveys done over the Casmo deposit during 1979 and 1980."

Our present longwall problems in Cape Breton can be grouped under five main classifications. These are: (1) Roof control on the face and on the main roadways leading thereto. (2) Transportation of coal along face and levels. (3) Mechanical loading at the face. (4) Safe method of conducting and applying power at the working faces. (5) Dust nuisance. The usual layout for longwall operation in Cape Breton is to have three, and sometimes four, faces in line with each other, the length of face being from 400 feet to 500 feet (see Figure 1), and producing between 425 and 500 tons per face. Each wall is serviced by a well constructed roadway for transportation of coal, men, and materials, and is operated as an independent unit. Each wall works under a regular cycle of operations: first, cutting and boring; second, drawing hardwood chocks, building midwalls, and shifting panlines; and third, loading. The present method of roof control and operation of longwall faces has developed through trial and error since the commencement of longwall miring in Cape Breton. The basic method of roof control in all longwalls in Cape Breton is: rigid support of the roof in the immediate vicinity of the working faces by hardwood blocks, as shown in Figure 2, accompanied by a cushion support furnished by continuous midwalls, 12 feet wide, constructed of stone obtained from the waste and spaced at 50-foot centres. These midwalls are kept forward to within 4 feet to 10 feet of the working face and allow a gradual subsidence of overhead strata, thus preventing any sudden break at the working face.

In this paper the author will provide an overview of over 20 years of research & developments in the area of hydrometallurgical arsenic immobilization that culminated recently in the industrial implementation of the atmospheric scorodite process. The paper will consider various aspects of arsenic fixation in the non-ferrous metal industry from the iron-arsenic co-precipitation process employed to arsenic-bearing effluent solutions; to autoclave processing of arsenical copper and gold feedstocks and the fate of the in-situ formed iron sulphato-arsenate precipitate phases; the precipitation and stability of scorodite; the possible stabilizing role of mineral phases like yukonite, and the development of "scoroditeplus" processes employing novel encapsulation strategies. Emphasis is placed on the characterization and long-term stability of the various forms of arsenic-immobilized phases under either oxic or anoxic conditions over a wide pH range and the establishment of critical links between process parameters and hazardous material stability, contributing thus to advancement of new generation safe and sustainable waste management technologies.

"The Brunswick No.12 site concentrator processes 10,500 tonnes per day of a complex lead, zinc, copper and silver ore producing four concentrates by differential flotation. Research over the years has led to increased understanding about the mineralogical and flotation characteristics of the ore. A pilot plant study conducted at Lakefield Research, primarily designed to investigate the technical feasibility of semi-autogenous grinding, provided an opportunity to test recent theories about grind size,, reagent schedule and flowsheet configuration.A fundamental approach was taken with each of the unit processes involved in grinding and flotation. Basic operating and metallurgical criteria were established in each area and a step-by-step implementation program initiated in the plant.Significant improvements in metallurgical and financial performance have been realized through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment and without major capital expenditure. Current operating practice is detailed and metallurgical advancements cited.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Brunswick is a publicly traded company with majority ownership held by Noranda Minerals (63%). In addition to the No. 12 underground mine, the company operates a lead smelter and phosphate fertilizer plant in Belledune, N.B. and maintains a 25% interest in a joint venture with Noranda Minerals' Heath Steele mine near Newcastle, N.B. Through the four operations, a total of 2000 people are directly employed with fixed assets totalling Cdn$187 million (BM&S, 1991)."

"The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."
