The Mining Act (1992) and the Petroleum Act (1980) provide for the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take up equity holdings in mining and petroleum projects. The price the Government pays for its share is based on the historical cost of exploration and development on the project to the date of government equity acquisition. The equity level to be acquired is not fixed and ranges up to 30o for mining and up to 22.5s for petroleum at the discretion of the Government of the time.The objective of this paper is to examine the pros and cons of State equity holdings in PNG from the point of view of both the State and the developer. Using an economic model of the PNG mining taxation system an assessment is made of the effective return on investment received by the State from such equity holdings. The results are compared with government revenues from other taxation measures.

Deep bed media filtration is used as a tertiary treatment step (after hydrocyclones and flotation cells) to remove fine oil droplets and solids from oilfield water before reinjection disposal or to remove particulate material from surface waters used for waterflood injection. Oil and solids injection requirements are typically <5 ppm concentration at <2 micron diameter. The preferred media for produced water filtration is walnut or pecan shell, however the use of this media has evolved by trial & error and the fundamental mechanisms that occur during separation and media cleaning have not been investigated. A project was initiated to fill in this knowledge gap by analyzing the physical, mechanical, chemical, and hydrodynamic properties of six types of granular filtration media (12/20 mesh size): garnet, silica, anthracite, pecan shell, English walnut shell, and black walnut shell. Comparison of bed packing, oil wetting, attrition resistance, particle strength, and fluidization has led to an understanding of the preferred filtration media for separation of fine oil droplets and solids.

This paper describes the process used for cobalt purification and recovery at the AMAX Nickel Refining Co. plant In Port Nickel, Louisiana In the first stage, cobaltic precipitate produced in the Outokumpu electrolytic nickel cobalt separation process is dissolved using methanol and sulfuric acid liquor produced in this step is converted to an ammoniacal complex, and sufficient ammonium sulfate is added to facilitate cobalt oxidation to cobaltic pentammine Nickel is then selectively precipitated as nickel-ammonium sulfate double salt at pH 2 5 Final purification of the pentammine liquor is effected by pH adjustment with ammonia and removal of divalent nickel by ion exchange Purified liquor is then advanced to hydrogen reduction to produce cobalt metal Although similar to other cobalt refining processes used in the nickel industry, the Port Nickel process is unique because of a single point chemistry adjustment for a number of unit operations that occur in succession.

Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.

Closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foams have been extensively used in many applications such as packaging, transportation, sports, construction, and agriculture because of their variety of properties including light weight, chemical resistance, thermal and electrical insulation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of electron-beamirradiation on the properties of LDPE/EPDMblend foams. The LDPE/EPDM blend (80/20 wt%) were prepared by melt extrusion, using a twin-screw extruder machine. The foam structure of LDPE/EPDM blends was obtained by melt extrusion process, using a special single screw for foaming with 1.5 wt% of foaming agent as blowing agent. The foam samples were irradiated by electron-beamat radiation dose of 25, 50, 75 and 100 kGy and submitted to heating in an oven at 100 °C. The specimen tests samples of irradiated and non-irradiated foams were submitted to mechanical tests, DSC, TG analysis and density measurement.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

In July 2003, The Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies of the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy solicited Grand Challenge Proposals to establish three Centers of Excellence in hydrogen storage developments for reversible metal hydrides, non-reversible chemical hydrides and carbon storage materials, respectively. The program mission is to research and develop cost-effective, on-board hydrogen storage systems that enable a minimum range of 300 miles within the weight and volume constraints of the vehicle. Currently, no hydrogen storage technology available can meet the DOE cost and performance targets. In April 2004, Sandia National Laboratories was selected by DOE to lead the Metal Hydride Center of Excellence with partners from 5 other national laboratories. We will present the organization and recent accomplishments of the Metal Hydride Center which is confident to accomplish DOE/FreedomCAR and Fuels Partnership objectives for 2010 in hydrogen storage for vehicular transportation applications.

O desenvolvimento de aços de alta resistência associados à boa tenacidade é uma alternativa para redução de custos na construção e instalação de oleodutos e gasodutos, devido à possibilidade de redução da espessura dos tubos sem que seu desempenho seja afetado. Os aços da classe API (American Petroleum Institute) pertencem ao grupo de aços ARBL (Alta Resistência Baixa Liga) que possuem as combinações desejáveis de resistência à tração, ductilidade, tenacidade e soldabilidade. No processo de laminação a quente o comportamento dos aços está diretamente relacionado aos parâmetros de processamento como temperatura, deformação, taxa de deformação, taxa de resfriamento e tempo entre passes. O controle desses parâmetros é importante na determinação da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas do material. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o comportamento termomecânico do aço API 5L X80M–PSL2 através de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmicos. Através desses ensaios serão determinados a tensão e deformação de pico, tensão e deformação crítica e a porcentagem de amaciamento do material.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a necessidade de substituição das linhas de gás entre a torre de MEA e a entrada no header de distribuição para os vasos Scrubbers em uma plataforma com trinta anos de operação, dado o seu histórico de produção de H2S. Verificou-se a existência de danos possivelmente causados por este contaminante nas tubulações de aço-carbono API GrB e API 5LX 42 pela análise da junta soldada entre flange e tubo, região onde frequentemente ocorrem as falhas na presença de H2S. Observou-se na ZF e nas ZTA a presença de micro-inclusões, as quais foram submetidas à análise química qualitativa por espectrometria dispersiva de raios-X e concluiu-se que eram provenientes do revestimento do eletrodo utilizado no processo de soldagem e da fabricação do aço. Como não foi constatada a presença de trincas ao longo da junta, determinou-se não ser recomendada a substituição de linhas que operam em condições semelhantes.

Compacts of crushed waste window glass, fluorescent tubes, drinking glasses and laboratory glass wares were made at various proportions from 106 microns and minus 75 microns powders in combination with 5% bentonite as binder for each glass type, after several trials to determine compatibility of particle sizes. They were made using the uniaxial press at 10,000 psi and sintered at a temperature range of 700- 750oC. The results showed anisotropic shrinkage behavior for all the samples, exhibiting an axial shrinkage lower than the radial shrinkage. Sintered compact from waste drinking glass which comprised of 60% 106 microns and 40% minus 75 microns powders showed the least sintering shrinkage factor of 1.125, fused at 700oC and the highest shrinkage factor of 1.286 obtained at 750oC. This shrinkage behaviour connotes that sintering can be employed to utilize these waste glasses up to the maximum of 95% recycled glass content in ceramic tile production.

Titanium nitride is a broad-spectrum specific functional material because of its many superior properties. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate synthesis methods of TiN and alloys containing TiN reinforcement. In the current study, with the increase of nitrogen gas pressure and the optimization of routine ball milling parameters, the conventional mechanical ball-milling method can be improved, the nanometers TiH2-TiN composite powder can be synthesized successfully in a shorter time. Nitrogen gas filled in ball mill jar in which the pressure was 0.6 MPa. TiH2 powder was milled under nitrogen atmosphere at a spinning rate of 250 rpm. The results show that the stable TiN is formed after grinding for 2.5 h according to the X-ray diffraction pattern. DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) curves also indicate that milled compound powder adsorbs certain nitrogen gas. The gas adsorbed in TiH2-TiN composite can exist stably below 200 °C.

Polyethylene is widely used for packing applications. Different grades of polyethylene, LLDPE and LDPE play a major role in the film blowing industry. The use of nanoclay in polymer matrices (non-polar) requires the use of a compatibilizer agent, ethylene graft maleic anhydride copolymer (PE-g-MA), which acts as a bridge for nanoclay-matrix-interaction. In our study, blown films of LLDPE, LDPE, and their blends were produced using a twin screw extruder. The combination of PEs as matrix, montmorillonite (MMT) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) intended to improve mechanical and thermal properties. Nanocomposites films with 1 wt% of montmorillonite and 0.5–1.0 wt% silver nanoparticles were prepared by blow extrusion and evaluated. Nanoclay intercalation/exfoliation degree was investigated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed optimum dispersion at intercalation/exfoliation levels for polyethylene nanocomposite (PENC), slight increasing in mechanical and especially improvement in thermal properties.

Magnesium is present in nickels leach liquor and it is often disposed in waste barriers. However, new technologies with the aim of recuperating magnesium and other metals in the liquor have proven that it is possible to reduce the amount of metal lost during nickel ore processing. In this context, high temperature crystallization removes magnesium, with a concentration of 8 g/L, as MgSO4 H2O from the leach liquor. Kinetic studies of this process are needed to evaluate the thermodynamics of the growth of crystals. Thus, this work aims to study the crystallization kinetics of MgSO4 H2O. Temperatures of 230, 210 and 200 °C were investigated in a batch crystallization system in solutions with pH2. Aliquots were taken at each hour up to 5 h of time residence and analysed by ion chromatography for magnesium concentration. No presente trabalho foi feito um estudo do escoamento multifásico do desgaseificador RH através do no sistema água/óleo/ar. A modelagem matemática do escoamento fluidodinâmico foi feito utilizando a abordagem de dois fluidos Euleriana-Euleriana. No estudo foi empregado o modelamento matemático para simular as vazões empregadas na indústria para prever o comportamento da escória. Os experimentos foram feitos utilizando o modelo físico do desgaseificador RH da USIMINAS nas escalas de 1:5. Através de filmagens utilizando câmera comum e cálculos de espessura do óleo pôde-se validar os resultados obtidos no modelamento matemático. Foi determinado que na camada de óleo entre a panela e as pernas de descida e de subida do desgaseificador RH foram as regiões que possuem a menor espessura da camada de óleo. Os resultados apontaram que a espessura do óleo entre a perna de subida e a panela a espessura do óleo são as menores e decrescem à medida que a vazão de gás aumenta.

O diboreto de titânio (TiB2) é um material cerâmico de alta dureza com uma grande potencialidade de aplicação tecnológica. No entanto, existe uma grande dificuldade de se produzir corpos bem sinterizados desse material, quando são usadas técnicas convencionais de sinterização. Neste trabalho, foi empregada uma técnica de processamento em altas pressões e altas temperaturas para produzir compactos de TiB2 com AlN. Amostras cilíndricas, com 5 mm de diâmetro e 7 mm de altura, foram processadas durante diferentes intervalos de tempo compreendendo os ciclos de sinterização. O principal objetivo do trabalho foi à realização do ensaio de torneamento para a avaliação de desempenho dos compósitos produzidos e sua relação com a quantidade de ciclos de sinterizaçãos em condições reais de trabalho. Os resultados obtidos apresentam perspectivas interessantes de utilização do processamento em alta pressão e alta temperatura para produção de inseros para aplicação na usinagem do ferro fundido nodular.

The resource utilization of copper slag is an attractive option of iron resource. Thermal energy recovery and direct reduction (TER-DR) system was proposed in this study. By theoretica lanalysis,the exergy efficiency of this system can reach to 57.3%. To investigate the feasibility of TER-DR system, copper slag composite pellets within lignite were prepared. As a new binder, pinesaw dust was added into the pellets. The diameter of pellets was 20 mm in experiments and the compressive strength of them was up to 831 N when the addition ratio of biomass was 29%. The results showed that the overall iron recovery reached to 90% and the separated iron concentrate was up to 93.5% when thetemperature is at 1423 K for 90 min with CaO addition ratio of 0.3. The process reduces the secondary environmental pollution of copper slag and will be applied well in the future.

O forjamento a quente em matriz aberta é, atualmente, o processo mais utilizado para a fabricação de peças de grande porte. Neste estudo, a simulação numérica foi utilizada, através do método de elementos finitos, para análise do processo de forjamento em matriz aberta de um eixo vazado e escalonado aplicável em aerogeradores. A partir de um billet cilíndrico vazado de aço AISI 4140, pesando 1 kg, é simulado o processo de forjamento objetivando a obtenção de geometria final apresentada. Utiliza-se matrizes superior e inferior em formato côncavo, e um mandril de manipulação com inclinação de 1,15°. A cinemática da simulação numérica, que inclui 4 passes com um número total de 30 cursos, é avaliada. Ao comparar a geometria apresentada com a obtida observa-se que o alongamento longitudinal da forma final é obtido. A partir da análise da temperatura, pode-se concluir que o reaquecimento deve ser realizado após cerca de 45 s, no final de cada série de 5 cursos.
