Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

O rompimento de pele (breakout) é considerado uma das anomalias mais danosas ao processo de lingotamento contínuo de placas de aço. Esta ocorrência, além dos riscos de segurança durante a limpeza do aço derramado, resulta em pesadas perdas de produção e danos aos equipamentos. Estima-se que o custo potencial de um rompimento de média intensidade possa atingir a cifra de US$270.000,00, considerando a perda potencial de produção, o custo de reprocessamento do material e a recomposição dos equipamentos como segmentos, moldes, etc. Portanto, tão importante quanto evitar o breakout é também reduzir as suas consequências. Dentro deste contexto visando mitigar os danos de um rompimento quando o vazamento não é imediatamente reconhecido, desenvolveu-se um sistema pneumático de detecção de vazamento na saída do molde, envolvendo os edge e foot rolls. Basicamente, o sistema é um circuito fechado constituído de tubos de pequeno diametro com gás nitrogenio pressurizado. Se ocorrer um vazamento de aço, este funde o tubo (provocando perda de pressão ou excesso de vazão) ativando o sistema de alarme de indicação de vazamento, que fecha automaticamente a válvula gaveta do distribuidor para o veio e coloca a placa em extração. Atualmente todos os moldes da ArcelorMittal Tubarão possuem este sistema visando mitigar as consequencias de um vazamento.

THE death, on May 6, 1908, of Dr. Hermann Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony. Hermann Wedding was born March 9, 1834, in Berlin. At the suggestion of Dr. C. J. B. Karsten, the veteran father of Prussian metallurgy and author of the first German text-book of the metallurgy of iron, lie turned his attention, after gradu¬ating from the gymnasium, to mining and metallurgy. In 1853, he began a practical course at the Malapane iron-works, in Upper Silesia. Subsequently, he studied at the Berlin Mining Academy, and received from the University in 1859 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A journey which be made to England, somewhat later, led to his undertaking a German translation, with revision and additions, of John Percy's classic treatise on the metallurgy of iron and steel, the publication of which, in successive installments, stretched through many years. In 1863, lie published, as a thesis in connection with his "Assessor's examination," an essay, entitled The Results of the Bessemer Process for the Production of Steel, and Its Prospects for the Rhenish and Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry, which revealed such ability and knowledge as to secure for him a call to the chair of metallurgy in the Berlin Mining Academy.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Spirals, the most common equipment for the separation of heavy minerals such as chromite, are greatly affected by size distribution and the liberation degree (hence the specific gravity and size) of the feed particles. In this study, the efficiency of spirals in separation of low-grade chromite particles has been investigated by studying the distribution of grade, size distribution and liberation degree of feed, concentrate, and tailings of spiral. For this purpose, mass balance constraints were applied to the spiral-containing chromite processing circuit. Afterwards, the grade variations and size distributions have been investigated. According to the results, when the feed to the spiral has a larger size distribution, the enrichment ratio of the feed is 1.32 and, with the smaller feed size, this value has increased to 1.99. When the spiral feed has a larger size distribution and higher specific gravity, the recovery of chromite increases with increasing particle size up to 250 microns, and then with increasing particle size, recovery decreases with a relatively steep slope. Evaluation of spiral efficiency with respect to particle liberation degree has also shown that despite the high degree of liberation of spiral feed in size fractions smaller than 75 microns (88.9%), the liberation degree of spiral concentrate and tail in this faction is equal to and less than that of feed, which can indicate poor spiral performance in these size fractions.

A corrosão é um fenômeno que está intimamente ligado à integridade dos metais e de suas ligas. Esta ocorre de diversas formas, uma das principais é a corrosão localizada na forma de pites, objeto de análise desse estudo, que visa estabelecer um comparativo entre as curvas de polarização cíclica de algumas ligas ferrosas e não ferrosas, ensaiadas em solução de NaCl 0,6 M, mostrando a agressividade que a solução exerce sob cada uma das ligas. Os materiais analisados nesse estudo foram os aços inoxidáveis AISI 304, AISI 444, super duplex ASTM A890/A890 M Grau 6A, o aço carbono AISI 1030, o alumínio comercialmente puro, o cobre eletrolítico e a liga zircaloy- 4. Inicialmente foram medidos os potenciais de corrosão (Ec) de cada liga através do monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto. Foram realizados os ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica cíclica em cada liga, comparando o aspecto superficial antes e depois do ensaio através de micrografias óticas, possibilitando que fossem observadas as diferenças entre cada material quanto à resistência à corrosão por pites. Observou-se que algumas ligas não apresentam passivação como o caso do alumínio comercialmente puro, e outras apresentaram regiões passivas e histereses bem definidas, ficando evidente que, dentre as ligas analisadas, o aço inoxidável super duplex ASTM A890/A890 M Grau 6A apresentou os melhores resultados frente aos efeitos agressivos dos íons Cl- presentes na solução, sendo o menos suscetível à corrosão por pites.

A perda de temperatura das barras de aço no intervalo entre a saída do forno e a entrada do laminador é fator determinante no processo de laminação e na qualidade do tubo produzido. O estudo feito tem como objetivo modelar matematicamente o resfriamento destas barras durante o transporte entre o forno e o laminador, permitindo avaliar a temperatura mínima necessária para desenfornamento e também o máximo tempo de transporte sem comprometer o processo de laminação, possibilitando um melhor setup dos equipamentos reduzindo os custos de produção. Os resultados obtidos com o modelo matemático de resfriamento foram comparados com valores reais de temperatura coletados através de campanhas de medições com termopares instalados em uma barra e com medições de pirômetro. Valores de temperatura foram coletados com termopares em barras de 270, 230 e 180 mm de diâmetro. As medições com pirômetros foram feitas em barras de 180 mm de diâmetro. O modelo de resfriamento apresentou para todos os casos erro relativo às medições inferiores a 3%.

Faulty rock dusting of the New Orient Mine at West Frankfort, Ill. was declared to have been the primary cause of the extent of the blast that killed 119 men on December 21. Walter Eadie, state director of mines and minerals, ascribed the explosion to the ignition of methane in a working place about a mile northwest of the shaft of the mine. The initiation of the combustion was either by a spark from electrical machinery or from men smoking in the mine. It was surmised that a train of empty cars stalled in a ventilation door, had caused sufficient disturbance in the ventilation system to permit accumulation of gases. The Federal Bureau of Mines said that the Illinois explosion was caused by an electrical spark that touched off the clouds of gas present because of the faulty ventilation equipment. The bureau report listed three conditions as primarily responsible: An inadequate ventilating system, operation of faulty electrical equipment and the presence of large accumulations of fine coal dust capable of exploding. "This coal dust, principally along roadways, was not removed from the mine or rendered inert by the application of sufficient rock dust," the report stated. Investigations showed that an even more disastrous blast was averted because the explosion eventually reached areas where it could expand into open workings and where enough rock dust had been applied to retard it.

Managers are frequently faced with the decision to perform a task or manufacture an object in-house or to hire an outside vendor to perform the function. Outsourcing decisions are usually driven by economics: work is outsourced if it can be completed at a lower cost or in a shorter time than it can in-house. A technique termed incremental analysis can be used to make this decision. Incremental analysis examines the financial impact of outsourcing decisions as a function of the firm's fixed and variable operating costs. To use this tool, individual components of production cost are identified as being either constant or varying with levels of production activity. The assignment of cost type can be made in several ways: though analysis of historical operating data, understanding of individual expense types, and so forth. Changes in fixed and variable costs resulting from each potential course of action are explicitly identified to project the financial outcome of each alternative. The alternative having the greatest positive impact on profit is selected for implementation. By using the fixed- and variable-cost framework, the analysis is conceptually straightforward and substantially simplified. Production managers can therefore use incremental analysis as a tool for fast economically beneficial decisions on a real-time basis.

To develop an in-mine water treatment system in which bacterial sulfate reduction and limestone dissolution continuously remove metals and acidity from contaminated drainage. Approach A section of mine tunnel was converted into a water treatment bioreactor by constructing cinder block dams and fang the area between them with a porous substrate mixture of limestone gravel and compost. Readily fermentable materials such as dairy whey, spent brewing yeast, or sugar were periodically added to the reactor. Mine drainage was impounded behind one of the dams and continuously percolates through the reactor substrate at a controlled rate. How It Works The reactor substrate soon becomes anaerobic after it is saturated with mine water. Under anaerobic conditions, sulfate-reducing bacteria consume the organic materials that are added to the reactor and generate hydrogen sulfide (HIS) and alkalinity. The H2S reacts with dissolved iron and heavy metals to form metal sulfide precipitates. The alkalinity raises the pH of the water and induces aluminum to hydrolyze and precipitate as aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)3]. Additional alkalinity is generated by the continuous dissolution of the substrate limestone. Metal sulfide precipitates and Al(OH)3 are retained within the reactor, and the treated water is discharged. The underground location of the system allows year round operation.

How to quantitatively identify the loads on a square/arch set is a complicated issue in designing the square/arch set in an intersection/entry. From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of standing support such as a square/arch set can not only help design the support structure to maintain the roof stability, but save the steel materials and costs of manufacturing, labor, and delivery. Based on the design practices in recent years and successful applications in slope bottom intersections, the authors are confident that the concept of interaction and confinement effect between the steel square/arch set and surrounding rocks is critical in designing a proper steel structure to support an intersection/entry. This paper will detail the design concept and its applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.

Sintering performance of a series of sinter blends with high ratio of limonite was investigated. The metallurgical performance and mineralogy of product sinter were also examined. The results show that good sintering performance could be obtained when the ratio of limonite was below 43% in the blends of iron ore fines, while good microstructure and metallurgical properties were achieved under optimum sintering conditions. In contrast, sintering performance will rapidly deteriorate when the ratio of limonite is elevated up to 63% in the blends.

Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types. Outstanding advances among the metals, marked the mineral production records for Canada during the first half of 1925. Production of metals and non-metals reached a total value of $90,347,698. as compared with $84,307,385. in the first half of 1924, an increase of 7.16 per cent. Metals and non-metals produced during the calendar year 1924 were valued at $17 4,202,537.; production during the first half of 1925 showed a sum equal to 51.86 per cent of this total. Advances among the metals were general. Gold rose to a new record. Lead advanced 62.41 per cent over the high mark attained in the first half of 1924. Nickel production was well maintained. Copper was up a million pounds. Silver showed increased values. Zinc followed the trend in lead to almost double the output recorded in the first half of 1924. Cobalt production continued to improve. Despite the loss due to the protracted strike in the Nova Scotia coal mines which reduced the output of coal in that province; during the six months ending June, to less than half the tonnage reported in the first six months of 1924, improved conditions throughout the rest of the non-metal mining field resulted in the production of non-metals during the half-year reaching a total value of $31,199,233. as compared with $36,844,286. in the first half of 1924; the loss in the value of coal output al one amounted to $5,723,873, while the decrease in the aggregate value of non-metals amounted to only $5,645,053.

With the increasing demand for quality-specific ores, coupled to the reality of even more complex minable iron ore reserves, there is a growing need for real-time online material analysis of plant feed and product. For a full system mass balance, the combination of conveyor weight scales, flow and density transmitters are required. This alone does not guarantee product grade. For optimal process control and material blending, real-time online elemental scans in combination with the mass weighting is becoming more than a ‘nice to have’. These elemental scans located at key positions, enable the mining and plant operators to make informed decisions timeously, therefore ensuring product outcomes and optimising operations where material grade and the control thereof are important. Typically, these units follow the mining and primary crushing circuit as well as on the product conveyors, low-grade conveyors and tailings lines. Deployed after the primary crushing circuit, an analyser acts twofold:1. guaranteeing mining production, and2. processing facility feed blends.The analysers on the product conveyors guarantee saleable product. The analysers on the low-grade conveyor and tailings line complete the elemental balance and identify the potential of the low-grade and tailings for future processing. The system losses (accumulation) are calculated to determine the amount of material ‘lost’ during the processing stage which does not report to any of the aforementioned and can be used as a measure of the efficiency of the plant. A further advantage of the real-time online analysis of material is that immediate intervention can be taken in the event that the product is not of saleable product grade requirements. In the Khumani Iron Ore mine, Northern Cape, South Africa, run-of-mine (ROM), product and control analysers were included. Run-of-mine and product stockpiles are certifi ed, low-grade material is not currently directly measured, but calculated from the internal control loops. Iron units are reconciled between product and feed material.

Uma ferramenta de trefilação deve suportar as altas tensões a que fica submetida durante o processo sem apresentar deformações. Para isso, o projeto da fieira deve iniciar com a escolha correta do material de fabricação e um dimensionamento adequado. Tais fatores podem minimizar a ocorrência de falhas, tanto na fieira, quanto no produto trefilado, assim como diminuir as tensões e desgaste na ferramenta. Portanto, este estudo visa analisar as regiões de uma ferramenta de trefilação industrial que estão sujeitas as maiores amplitudes de tensões ao longo de um processo de trefilação. O método de elementos finitos foi utilizado para simular a trefilação de uma barra de aço utilizando uma ferramenta de carbeto de tungstênio. O perfil da fieira foi inserido no software e então analisado em diferentes etapas ao longo do processo de trefilação e após o seu término. Observou-se a ocorrência de tensões compressivas superiores a 600 MPa na região de trabalho e as maiores tensões trativas foram visualizadas na região de saída, com valores próximos a 200 MPa. A presença de tensões residuais não foi registrada na fieira, como esperado.

Parafusos utilizados para fixação de partes submetidos a carregamentos cíclicos estão sujeitos a falhas por fadiga. No estudo do conjunto carcaça/corrediça de um compressor fixado por parafusos prisioneiros - ISO M24x3, que fixam o flange da corrediça falharam prematuramente por fadiga. O objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia para otimizar o desempenho em fadiga do conjunto parafusado. Para tanto, foram realizados ensaios de fadiga visando o melhor processo de fabricação no desempenho em fadiga. Observou-se que o processo de laminação da rosca seguido de tratamento térmico é o mais adequado para o caso em estudo. A conclusão principal foi que a configuração atual de união do flange com a carcaça, resulta num baixo índice de aperto que é verificado através das cargas máximas que são transferidas diretamente ao parafuso e que aumentando o comprimento do parafuso através da inserção de uma bucha extensora, aumenta a vida em fadiga
