UsiborThrough the second step heating at 900 °C, the spectral emissivity shows a gradually decreasing trend with increasing soak time, caused by the surface phase transformation from Al® 1500P coupons are austenitized in a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator using a two-step heating procedure in an argon atmosphere. Variations in spectral emissivity are measured in-situ using a near infrared spectrometer and ex-situ with a Fourier transform infrared reflectometer. Microstructural evolution and surface roughness are investigated using optical microscopy, FE-scanning electron microscopy, and a surface profilometer. A series of phase transformations of Al-Fe-Si intermetallic phases at the coating/steel substrate interface cause the surface phase and surface roughness to change, which in turn influences the spectral emissivity. At the beginning of the first heating step, the coupons have very low spectral emissivity, due to the molten Al-Si coating. Spectral emissivity increases significantly with increasing soak time from 5 to 12 minutes, associated with the surface phase transformation of the coating into Al7Fe2Si intermetallic phase and an increase in surface roughness. 5Fe2 into AlFe intermetallic phase with a decrease in surface roughness.

THE THREE words, research, mechanization, and automation are keynote words for mining technology during 1962. Basically interrelated, they not only express the major technologic developments in mining but are the signposts pointing out the road ahead. The process represented by each of these words is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but developments during the past year indicate a climactical stage has been reached in the process of evolution. Mining research has progressed beyond the stage of academic discussion and is a programed activity within the Federal Government,3 the mining colleges,4 and many of the large mining companies.5 Research was a major agenda item at various national and international mining meetings in 1962. A list of these meetings would include such diverse locales as the Workshop and Symposium on Computers and Computer Applications in Mining and Exploration at the University of Arizona in March; and the 5th Rock Mechanics Symposium at the University of Minnesota, in May; the Rock Mechanics Symposium at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in September; and the Colloquium XIII, International Society for Rock Mechanics, at Salzburg, Austria, in November.

The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. At a special inaugural ceremony in Blue Hill, Maine on August 3rd, Governor John H. Reed detonated the first blast to signify the beginning of development work on a new copper-zinc mining venture that seems destined to focus increased interest in the mineral potential of that State. The property which is the first new base metal mine to be discovered in the northern Appalachians in 30 years, is owned by Black Hawk Mining Co., a subsidiary of Denison Mines Ltd. of Toronto. When it goes on-stream in 1966, it will join Ducktown, Tenn., as the only active copper producing region, east of the Mississippi River. According to official reports submitted by the Company to Robert G. Doyle, Maine's State Geologist, Black Hawk has found ore reserves totalling 4.5 million tons. Assays show 2.8 million tons of 2.0'; copper and 0.4 oz. of silver per ton; 1.2 million tons of 16.75% zinc and 0.58% copper; and 0.5 million tons of 6.75% lead with 4.25 oz. of silver per toil and some zinc.

The heat-treatment of steels will not pass from the stage of an art into that of a science until the mechanism of the phase transformations associated therewith is thoroughly understood. Such an understanding will involve two distinct types of inquiry: (I) the direction of the transformation, (2) the speed of the transformation. The first type of inquiry, which involves only the equilibrium relations between the various phases in steel, is the subject of the present and of a succeeding article; the second type, which involves the kinetics of transformations, will be the subject of a later article. In order that a theory of equilibrium relations may give useful information, certain experimental data must be put into the theory. It is customary for these data to be of a thermal nature. In the system discussed herein—steel—such thermal data are very scarce. In medium-alloy steels another type of data might possibly be used. In these steels the concentration of solute is so low that it may be possible to use the approximation of dilute solutions, an approximation that leads to linear relationships. The unknown functions, or constants, may then be determined in some cases from the binary iron-alloy system and in other cases from the ternary iron-carbon-alloy system. From the functions, or constants, so determined may then be computed the equilibrium relations in more complex medium-alloy steels. In the present article this second approach is used, the necessary experimental data 'being obtained from the simple binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams. Fundamental Equations In this article are derived the equilibrium relations between the gamma, alpha and cementite phases. In these three phases all important alloying elements except carbon form substitutional solutions, each alloying atom occupying a potential site for an iron atom. Carbon, on the other hand, forms an interstitial solution. In the face-centered cubic gamma phase, the interstitial positions are at the center of the unit cube and at the centers of the cube edges. There are therefore four interstitial positions per unit cell, or one per iron atom. In the body-centered cubic alpha phase, the interstitial positions are probably at the face centers, and also at the centers of the edges, which are crystallographically equivalent to the face centers. There are therefore six interstitial positions per unit cube, or three per iron atom. In cementite, (Fe, Alloy)3C, the carbon atoms may. be regarded as filling all the lattice positions of a given type. The introduction of the fundamental the of equilibrium has presented the author with a quandary. Mines are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique gcological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has beeu mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness from 0.5 in. of ('specimen rock" to 30 ft, of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000 ft, in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. The Bodie district occupies an island of recent (Tertiary) hornblende-andesite, surrounded by a complex of igneous rocks and breccias. The velocity and attenuation of elastic waves in sandstones were measured as a function of both pressure and fluid saturation. A large change occurs in these quantities if water is added and the rock is not compressed, but the change is small if the rock is subjected to a large overburden pressure. Measurements were made by vibrating cylindrical samples in both the extensional and torsional modes at frequencies up to 30,000 cycles/sec. Formulas were derived which enable the attenuation of dilatational waves in dry rocks to be deduced from the data. Similar experimental methods were used to investigate the properties of unconsolidated sands. Velocities were found to vary with the 1/4 power of the overburden pressure and attenuations to decrease with the 1/6 power. The effects of grain size, amplitude and fluid saturation were studied. Formulas by which the effects produced by a jacket around the sample may be calculated were derived. The practical application of these results to formation valuation is discussed. INTRODUCTION The attenuation of elastic waves in the earth has been of interest to the seismologist and geophysicist for many years, but only recently to the petroleum engineer. Engineering interest has been brought about by the success of velocity logging devices, for it is possible by modification of these instruments to measure the attenuation of sound waves in addition to their velocity and, hence, deduce the mobility of formation fluids as well as the porosities of the rocks which contain them. The main problem is to decide whether field measurements can be made with sufficient accuracy to be of practical use. This problem can only be solved after we know the magnitude of the attenuations which are typical of the earth at various depths. The logarithmic decrement of a fluid-saturated rock is the sum of a "sloshing" decrement and a "jostling" decrement, the former caused by the mobility of the fluid contained within the rock and the latter by the granular framework of the rock. Sloshing decrements can be calculated' using Biot's theory, but the jostling losses are less well understood. The present paper reports an experimental investigation of jostling losses in consolidated and uncon- solidated sands, particularly with respect to the effect of overburden pressure and fluid saturation. Born' showed that the decrement of a sandstone may increase dramatically when only a few per cent by weight of distilled water is added, and that the additional loss is proportional to the frequency of vibration. His measurements were made with no compressive stress on the framework of the rock. M. Gondouin3 investigated similar phenomena for fluid-saturated plasters but also did not compress the samples. In the present paper it is shown that compression of the framework reduces this effect, so that at depth the jostling decrement of a sandstone may be expected to be almost independent of fluid saturation and frequency. Decrements for many sedimentary rocks have been given by Volarovich,4 but all for the state of zero overburden pressure. Anomalously low velocities have been logged in shallow unconsolidated gas sands. Results of the present investigation confirm that these velocities are not caused by correspondingly high attenuations, because the jostling decrement in a packing of sand grains is small and much less than in a consolidated sandstone at the same depth. Velocities in sands have been measured by Tsareva5 and by Hardin6 as a function of pressure, but the corresponding decrements do not appear to have been measured previously. The widely used "resonant bar method" of measuring velocities and decrements was employed. Comments on variations of this technique have recently been published by McSkimmin.7 The main novelty of the present technique was the application of pressure to the samples. It was found possible to do this by placing the apparatus inside a pressure vessel, provided the conditions leading to large additional losses were avoided. These conditions are discussed below. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Cylindrical samples were caused to vibrate in both the extensional and torsional mode of vibration and the amplitude of vibration was measured as a function of frequency in the neighborhood of a resonant frequency. The resonant frequency, fr, is related to the corresponding elastic modulus by the formulas where E and N are Young's modulus and the modulus of rigidity, p is the density of the sample, and A the wavelength of the vibration.

In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.

Continental Materials Corp. operates two under- ground uranium mines in the Crooks Gap district of central Wyoming. Both mines are developed as slusher mining operations through vertical shafts with single level haulage to slusher pocket loading stations. In general, operations at both mines are similar except for depth and some minor details. The shafts are identical in cross-section, each with a 4 ½ x 5-ft hoisting compartment and a 4 ½ x 5-ft manway. Kimberley-type skips are loaded from measuring pockets through air-operated guillotine gates. The Seismic shaft is 245 ft deep and the Reserve shaft depth is 585 ft. The Seismic shaft was sunk in 1957 and the mine has been producing 200 tpd since 1958. The Reserve shaft was sunk in 1960 and the mine is still in the development stage. The hoists of both mines are equipped for semi-automatic operation; that is, they are mechanically controlled to perform a certain cycle of duty and then stop until another cycle is manually initiated. The Seismic hoist, however, was originally a conventional, manually controlled unit; the reserve hoist was installed as an automated system.

The activation of three polyethylenes, the low density, the high density and the linear low density polyethylene, was determined by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Storage modulus and tan δ spectra were obtained as a function of the temperature from −60 to 50 °C with a heating rate of 2° min−1 at frequencies of 1, 2 and 5 Hz and measurement strain amplitude of 10−5. In the tan δ spectra, a small peak in the β region of the three polyethylenes was found and substantiated by subtracting the growing exponential background. This procedure was based on a model that associates the dislocation motion on metals under cyclic stress to vibrating strings and considering the same for the polymeric chains. For the determination of the activation energy we have utilized the frequency versus the reciprocal of the absolute temperature peak of the tan δ. The values obtained for the three polyethylenes, the low density, the high density and the linear low density were, 362 ± 12, 266 ± 9 and 197 ± 6 kJ mol−1, respectively, which were compared with those presented in the literature.

The development of the theory of reliability creates more and more possibilities of its application in different domains of technics. The methods evolved to date, both theoretical analysis of the engineering systems and investigations techniques in practice can be put in use a d translated from one science to another one [1,3,7J . It needs to consider the specific of the different sciences. But it is necessary to take account of the specific characteristic of each line of science. The reliability investigations needs, justified in technical and economical viewpoint appear too in mine ventilation technics and systems. The mine ventilation system is a complex of workings and ventilation plants, which serve to supply the networks with a sufficient quantity of fresh air from the atmosphere and then carry off the vitiated air. The condition necessary for a ventilation system to perform definite task is the correctness of all its elements, that is a capability to preserve in a expected range of tolerance, the values of basic parameters. The element of a system which ceases to work correctly is called failed. The basic parameter of all elements of a ventilation system is the characteristic curve, pressure loss - air quantity relation ?p = f(Q) (1) This curve concerning the workings and ventilation stoppings is given by the formula: ?p = R Q2 (2) thus the resistance R (of the workings or stoppings) may be taken as a characteristic parameter. The course of this characteristic f(Q) will be given in a complex form in concern with fans, ejectors, air curtains. The failure of a ventilation plant or working is therefore an event, relying on a change of its characteristic, thus for a definite time the losses of the plant's or working's capability set in for the fulfilment of its function in the ventilation system. The failures are divided in viewpoint of their nature on sudden and progressive. We are in concern with the sudden failures which are characterised by a violent change of the ventilation element parameter for example a fall of roof, or silt up of the working, opening or failure of the ventilation stopping, the stand-off of the fan or ejector etc. We distinguish two kinds of failures on the viewpoint of their action on the air flow: the "opening" failure and "closure" failure. The prevalence of factors, which causes the failures is in connection with the intersection in the mine of roads of haulage, roads of underground transport of materials and lining elements, roads of people motion with airways, as also depends on the rock pressure reaction on the workings lining and plants placed there. Other factors will yet be decisive upon supply decay of fans, ejectors and curtains. The appearance of failure of the ventilation element is therefore of random nature and determines the change of the element, when it is passing from operating state to unoperate. Qualifying the ventilation system element to one of these states is easy, when the characteristic change is clear and occurs suddenly, that was assumed. The investigations conducted by Patrushev and Karnaukh [91 in concern with the ventilation stoppings resistance change in the case of their opening, had shown the possibility of resistance value change in the range of several hundreds higher.

5. General Escapeway Requirements 5.1 Escape Routes Present escapeway regulations state "Every mine shall have two separate properly maintained escapeways to the surface which are so positioned that damage to one shall not lessen the effectiveness of the other, or a method of refuge shall be provided when only one opening to the surface is possible." "Escape routes shall be a. Inspected at regular intervals and maintained in safe, travellable condition, b. Marked with conspicuous and easily read direction signs that clearly indicate the ways of escape." "Application. "Regular" intervals means at intervals no greater than monthly where conditions are stable and oftener where conditions may change." "Designated escapeways inclined more than 30* from the horizontal shall be equipped with stairways, ladders, cleated walkways, or emergency hoisting facilities." As can be noted in present and proposed regulations there must be two separate properly maintained escapeways. In most operations, the escapeways will consist of one route that is the normal travelway used in day to day operations. The second route is usually a return airway through old work areas. Based on this generally accepted practice, we will designate the two types as primary and secondary.

The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

THE effects of oxidation on the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals have been extensively studied,1-3 but no similar study has been made of coals. Coals of bituminous and lower rank undergo atmospheric oxidation during mining and storage, and their degree of oxidizing increases with temperature4,5 and time of exposure.6 The problem of recovering fine oxidized coal from culm piles, rivers, and streams by froth flotation has become increasingly important to the coal industry as well as to those concerned with air and stream pollution. This paper describes the flotation behavior of oxidized and unoxidized coals and carbons in the presence of oily collectors and presents the reagents found effective in the flotation of oxidized coals and carbons. Except where otherwise stated, flotation tests were performed in a 50-g Denver flotation cell. Solid feed for each test was 30 g, and the pulp dilution was kept at 8.5. The -65 mesh coal sample was wetted by agitation with water in the flotation cell for 6 min, then conditioned with a predetermined amount of collector for 2 min, and finally floated with pine oil as frother for 3 min.

IT may be taken for granted that a mine official knows his duties, as outlined by the bituminous mining laws of the State, he knows how coal should be mined and transported, and he has judgment on any possibly unsafe condition in his mine. Certainly, if he is weak on any of these points, there are definite ways in which he can acquire the needed knowledge. If with this knowledge the mine official has the necessary practical experience to bring self-confidence, he stands before the world as a man who knows his job. There is, however, another side to his work, one not found in hooks, a side even that may not be learned at the face even though one spends a lifetime there. The actual duties a mine official knows and performs are the tangible and definite things about his work. There are other things which may be termed intangible, because they are hard to pin down and see, and. which appear to be of equal importance in successfully handling a job and which in time determine the very success of the company itself.

Present capacity for molten iron production at Port Kembla is an average of 13 000 t/day from five blast furnaces. The most recently installed blast furnace, No.5, was commissioned in March 1972 with a design capacity of 4 500 t/day. For the first reline currently scheduled for 1977, plans are being finalized.for significant modifications and uprating of capacity. Achievement of the initial design capacity from No.5 blast furnace on a sustained basis was not realised until the third year of operation. Although the furnace is only 42% larger than No.4 blast furnace on an inner volume basis, the more stringent raw materials, operation and maintenance requirements of the larger furnace and more complex equipment have been found to be much more critical than anticipated in the planning stages. These problems have also been experienced by many other companies who have recently installed large new blast furnaces. Some of the principal problem areas are described together with measures taken to over- come the difficulties. International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

This report presents equations derived from experimental testing to convert borehole pressure cell data from vertical and horizontal cells to the biaxial ground stress changes. While hydraulic pressure cells in boreholes have been in extensive use since 1957, methods of data reduction have been slow to develop. The methods of Sellers (1970) and Bauer et al. (1985), respectively, indicate a linear relationship between cell pressure change and the rock stress change. Lu presented a theory for creep behavior (Babcock et al., 1982). In the present work, in laboratory testing, the logarithm of the cell pressure was related to the stress change in seven elastic materials for a range of Young's moduli of 3.45 to 85.5 GPa (0.5 to 12.4 x 106 psi). The gage response depends upon the setting pressure of the gage, the gage pressure at any time, the rock properties, and the cross-sensitivity of the gage to transverse loading. The setting pressure of the cell should be proportional to the Young's modulus of the rock, the absolute stress can be determined by overcoring in strong rock, and the in situ Poisson's ratio can be estimated in some cases from the cell responses.

The Subcommittee on Manganese, of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Industrial Preparedness, prepared under date of Jan. 24, 1924, for and at the request of the War Department, a confidential report on manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This report was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manganese in the problem of industrial preparedness agenist a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the onclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply wi' this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened and ex' tive studies were once more made of the entire subject of mang? . A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted + War Department in February, 1932. This second report, with 4. L specific conclusions and recomrnendations expressed to the War Department omitted, has now been released and is hereby published. Following a rather brief discussion of uses of manganese and classification of manganese ores, requirements and sources are dealt with at some length. Domestic ferro-grade reserves are estimated on the basis of price and are shown by means of a curve where tons of metallic manganese are plotted cumulatively against prices ranging from 50¢ to $1.00 per unit; thereby indicating at a glance the tonnage which the Committee believes would become commercially available at any particular price per unit. Foreign sources of ore are described and foreign prices which the domestic producer must meet are considered. The question of a war-emergency reserve is then analyzed, requirements are balanced against apparent resources, and the principal conclusion that emerges is that a war reserve or stockpile is still vital to national defense.
