This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. "Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001)."

In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

To recover iron values from low grade ores by reverse froth flotation method, further research on cationic collectors used in reverse flotation of iron ores is launched to promote the utilization efficiency of iron ores. In this paper, one new cationic surfactant, bis(2-hydroxylethyl) dodecylamine (BHD), that could be dissolved in water easily was used as collector for quartz flotation. Flotation results indicated that BHD shows stronger collecting performance on quartz than hematite. The maximum recovery of 96.30% to quartz is obtained at a collector concentration of 20.0 mg/L in the pulp pH range from 5 to 7. This collector can be used to float quartz from hematite. And optimal separation results with 86.59% iron recovery and 66.60% iron grade to synthetic sample were achieved at a collector concentration of 20.0 mg/L and pulp pH of 5.02 when hematite and quartz were mixed at a mass ratio of 3:2. The adsorption mechanism of the collector on quartz surface was investigated by XPS analysis, infrared spectroscopic analysis and zeta-potential measurements, which revealed that electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding adsorption occur between collector and quartz surface.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. The Bureau of Mines used an electrolytic tank model to investigate the response of guard electrodes of different dimensions under different simulated reservoir conditions. Sandstone disks from the Berea and Connellsville Formations were used as resistive beds in the model, and agar gel or water was used as conductive beds. In the experiments, bed thickness, hole diameter, mud resistivity, and bed resistivity were varied. The guard electrode is an excellent tool for determining true bed resistivity in the thin-bedded oil reservoirs of the Appalachian area. Vertical resolution and resistivity values are good when there is little or no invasion. Resistivity values are near true bed resistivity in beds thicker than about six hole diameters when the electrode-to-hole-diameter ratio is close to 1. However, low-resistivity muds cause false peaks to appear on the logs near bed boundaries in thick beds, and for resistive beds having a thickness approximately three to five times the hole diameter, apparent resistivities tend to be excessively high when mud resistivity is low.

This Bureau of Mines report investigates shield mechanics by describing the elastic response and interaction of shield components to applied vertical and horizontal displacements for various canopy and base contact configurations. This research provides information on generalized shield mechanics, which is applicable in describing the behavior of all two-leg shield supports. Utilizing mechanics of materials concepts and known kinematic relationships for two-leg shield supports, free-body diagrams are constructed for each shield component illustrating internal axial, shear, and bending moment responses required to maintain equilibrium for each load case evaluated. Predicted shield (component) responses are verified by controlled displacement of instrumented longwall shields in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS). Conclusions drawn from these analyses include shield structural responses are significantly dependent upon canopy and base contact configurations. Applied displacements also significantly affect shield responses. Horizontal displacement produces different responses than those produced by vertical displacements. The direction of horizontal displacement is also significant in evaluating shield response. Applications of shield mechanics to in situ support monitoring are also discussed. An objective of this research program is to establish unique shield responses to identify in situ load conditions.

Public awareness of, and involvement in, recycling has increased significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, recycling is generally perceived as a new development, and is familiar only in the context of municipal solid waste management. The actual magnitude and scope of metals recycling in the United States have gone virtually unnoticed. Over time, both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of secondary metals recovery and reuse have changed substantially, while the attendant regulations have become increasingly stringent. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines trends and developments in major metal demand and recycling, and analyzes the possible impacts of regulations with regard to recycling activities.

The milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I hare thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value arid interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a met stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulplides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. This mill treats the ore from the Ontario mine, ore which at present is very base, being composed of zinc, lead, and silver sulphides and silver chloride in a quartz gangue. This ore has become baser as the mine attained greater depth, though the vein holds its own, or rather increases, both in thickness and richness. Reaction between xanthate ions in solution and oxidized compounds present on the surface of galena to form lead xanthate is considered to be a side reaction not contributing to flotation, although accounting for some consumption of reagent. The direct reaction of lead sulphide with xanthate and oxygen to form lead xanthate is the most significant to flotation. Coadsorntion of dixanthogen is also involved. Previous work has shown lead recovery in lead rougher flotation to be a function of m [H+] where: m = concentration of xanthate in solution rHl = hydrogen ion concentration. A plausible explanation for this relationship is suggest-ed. Likewise, the experimental findings that the amount of xanthate adsorbed under certain conditions is a function of m'[H+] are explained in terms of reaction between xanthate ions and soluble basic lead salts such as PbO.PbS04? It is also shown that m[H+] should have a constant value in lead cleaners operating at a higher pH than the roughers. This conclusion is confirmed by plant data, and the value of the constant agrees well with the calculated value. The finding is useful in mill control.

"THE IRON ORE Company of Canada has been using do-it-yourself type explosives for three years. During the last 12 months we have used over 10 million pounds of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil explosives and either purchased or formulated one million pounds of slurried explosives.W e have been moving approximately one million cubic yards of stripping and ore per month and we expect our production rate to in-crease. Eighty per cent of our strip-ping and ore is soft enough to be blasted successfully with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures. Twenty per cent of our material is extremely hard and requires an explosive having greater strength than an AN-fuel oil mixture.W e had been using canned am-monium nitrate base explosives and TNT pellets to give maximum bottom loading density to fracture hard rock. As AN -fuel oil became widely used, it was apparent that other types of explosives could be formulated to fit our blasting requirements. Dr. M. A. Cook of the University of Utah was consulted regarding new explosives and together we developed the blasting slurries.Figure 1 shows a general view of one of our hard rock pits. The foot wall is on the right-hand side and this material is called iron forma-Figure 1.-General view of hard rock pitstion by our Company but is called 'Taconite by the operators on the Mesabi Range. This material runs 35 to 45 per cent iron and many pieces are hard enough to scratch glass. The formation is tilted at an angle of 55 degrees as can be seen in Figure 3.The bedding planes of this rock are about 24 to 36 inches apart and if the material is not well broken or fragmented, large chunks or slabs must be handled by the shovels which reduces shovel capacity and efficiency and increases maintenance costs."

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

The important role of the petrographic microscope in the petrology of refractories is discussed, based on 45 years of industrial experience by the author. Highlights of his career are used to illustrate improvements in equipment and techniques during the period. Two specific investigations are described which emphasize the interrelated use of the petrographic microscope with other instruments such as the x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. Emphasis is placed on the use of phase equilibrium diagrams for guidance in predicting and interpreting reactions that occur under non-equilibrium conditions in the manufacture and use of refractories.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the causes and consequences of longwall face sloughage. Theoretical relationships were developed to evaluate mechanisms that produce slough age. From these relationships, contributory factors were identified for further analysis in field efforts. A survey identified 12 mine sites with sloughage problems, and these were investigated. From these studies, it was determined that the depth of cover and mining height are the two most significant factors causing sloughage on longwall faces. Coalbed friability and cleat orientation also were found to be significant factors in promoting sloughage. It was concluded that sloughage is primarily a problem in thicker seams or seams with friable coalbeds, and that the problem is more severe as the depth of cover increases. Sloughage also was found to increase as the rate of mining decreased. Observations indicated that face slough age can increase dust generation significantly on longwall faces. Current efforts to control dust generation from longwall sloughage are described.

Methods of preparing small heats of steel containing radioisotopes were developed, and the techniques of stripping film autoradiography were used to detect and study the carbide and sulfide phases in titanium-bearing steels. Metallography had revealed areas of titanium sulfide and ferrite or pearlite adjacent to areas of titanium carbide and ferrite, and unidentified, irregular phases at the boundaries between these two areas. Sulfur 35 was used to deter-mine the extent of the titanium sulfide inclusions, and carbon 14 was used to delineate the titanium carbide phase. Individual radioactive areas were located with a resolution of approximately 10 microns. A general background exposure that was not correlated with microscopically visible phases was observed in the carbon 14 autoradiographs. The evidence from both sulfur 35 autoradiographs and carbon 14 autoradiographs indicated that the unidentified inclusions were sulfides rather than carbides. INTRODUCTION The use of radioisotopes to facilitate the work at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center was expanded in fiscal year 1959 when the Bureau of Mines authorized the installation of an intermediate-level radioactivity laboratory. Before this time, sealed cobalt 60 sources had been employed for radiography, but no tracer work was done. The primary objective of the first experiments conducted in the new laboratory was to supplement physical metallurgy investigations of selected problems in steel research.

AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi¬gation of the, mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation' in the spring of 1934. HPGR equipment has been well proven to be energy-efficient in the first stage of grinding in iron ore beneficiation plants. Numerous advantages of utilising HPGR grinding prior to ball mill grinding, such as reducing the power consumption in a ball mill through generation of micro-cracks, has been thoroughly studied. Less attention has been paid to efficiency of the HPGR circuit rather than the downstream ball mill circuit. In this study the HPGR circuit has been optimised through feed size reduction by crushing, and feed iron content upgrading by dry cobbing. This optimisation leads to better operation of the HPGR, and a smaller product size which is expected to result in a lower wear rate of ball mill liners and balls. It is also expected that the top size of the ball mill balls be reduced. Additionally, by reducing the feed size of HPGR from 30 mm to 15 mm, it is possible to achieve similar K80 of HPGR product in lowered pressure, i.e. 2.5 N.mm-2 instead of 3.5 N.mm-2 which translates to ease of operation. Similarly in a given roll pressure, smaller feed sizes result in higher specific throughput of ~10% which means higher production capacities. The results also reveal that this optimisation increases the concentrate weight recovery by about 10%. It also results in slight increases in the Fe grade of the product iron concentrate. "Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and free milling gold. In situ heterogeneity of mineralisation results in grade and process parameter variability, which will increase project risk. Measured variability is often enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Protocols that are optimised within the framework of the theory of sampling to suit the ore type, together with quality assurance/quality control systems, will reduce variability and provide fit-for-purpose results. The geometallurgical approach requires spatially distributed samples within a deposit to support variability modelling. Diverse attributes from core logging, mineralogical/textural determination and small-scale tests are used to measure variability. This contribution emphasises early stage geometallurgical intervention during project development. It presents a discussion of representative sampling in the context of the theory of sampling. "We analyzed two copper and lead flotation concentrates from the LaRonde mill using MLA technology (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) to identify the contaminants and to quantify their size and liberation. The MLA mineral quantification was compared with traditional mineralogical techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Chemistry). The accuracy of MLA data was then quantify in application to metallurgical decision (mineral identification, mineral quantification, particle sizing and liberation quantification). We prepared five well-known materials from pure minerals and analysed them by MLA. MLA concentrates analyses showed the lead concentrate is mainly contaminated by pyrite and sphalerite. These minerals are liberated above 70 % and present a floatable size around 15 to 35 µm. Surface activation by dissolved lead from galena is therefore assumed for these contaminants. The analyses of the known samples show that mineral quantification and size distribution given by the MLA are consistent with the chemical analyses and the laser particle sizer. The liberation measurement is affected by the stereological effect. Modelling quantifies the overestimation of the particle liberation. Based on the modelling, the stereological shift on liberation should not impact metallurgical conclusions on the concentrate contaminations.INTRODUCTIONTo face the diversity of mineral processing challenges, the process mineralogy includes phase quantification, measurement of mineral size, liberation by exposure and by grade, association, surface contact proportion and texture. In the last decades, two SEM commercial tools emerged: MLA and QEMSCAN R. Both are based on specific combinations of backscattered electrons and X-ray images as well as image analysis routines developed at CANMET (Petruk & Pinard, 1976, Petruk, 1989), CSIRO (Frost, O'Hara, Suddaby, Grant, Reid, Wilson & Zuiderwyk, 1977, Reid, Gottlieb, MacDonald, & Miller, 1984) and JKMRC (Hall, 1977, Gu & Sugden, 1995). Recently, TIMA (TESCAN) and Mineralogic MiningR (ZEISS) supplied automated mineralogy for mining industry (Bouzahzah, Benzaazoua, Graham & Cropp, 2015, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015a). In parallel, home-made routine were developped to resolve mineralogy challenges in mineral process but also in geometallurgy and mining environment (Kahn, Mano, & Tassinari, 2002, Knight, Klassen & Hunt, 2002, Mermillod-Blondin, Benzaazoua, Kongolo, de Donato, Bussiere & Marion, 2011, Hunt & Bradshaw, 2015).
