During the mining process, the in-situ material is broken into different size ranges, from very large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable dust is associated with health and safety of the miners. The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined. The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (=0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.

Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

The current U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is addressing the recovery of flake graphite from kish, a steelmaking waste product, and the use of zeolites from abundant domestic natural deposits for efficiently cleaning up mining industry wastewater. The United States is almost totally dependent on imports for its graphite needs, but this may change depending upon the results from a pilot plant being constructed by industry using Bureau technology. Standard mineral processing techniques were applied by the Bureau to recover high-quality flake graphite from kish. It was considered innovative enough to receive an R&D 100 Award in 1992, and its commercialization has the potential to supply the total U.S. demands for graphite many times over. Zeolites have ion exchange properties similar to ion exchange resins, but are less expensive and available in large quantities. Samples of naturally occurring zeolites were tested for their efficiency in removing metal ions from synthetic and industrial waste solutions. The tests focused on defining their selecting, loading, eluting, and regenerating characteristics, and on developing a method for recovering the metal ions as added value products. The results showed that the removal of metal ions with zeolites from acid rock drainage (ARD) solutions is technically feasible and that this technique has the potential for being used in an integrated chemical treatment systems approach either as a primary or secondary cleaning step.

The sign of the surface potential for complex non-reactive ionic solids cannot be predicted solely from consideration of the hydration energy of gaseous ions which constitute the ionic lattice. Accurate analysis of these systems must involve the hydration energy of surface ions, which requires knowledge of the crystal structure, the identification of cleavage planes, and the calculation of binding energies of surface ions. Surface binding energies for ionic solids can be deter- mined if the Surface Madelung Constant is known. A computational technique was developed for the calculation of Madelung Constants for infinite lattices which gives excellent agreement with the values calculated by other more complicated methods reported in the literature. Extension of this technique permits the calculation of Surface Madelung Constants and binding energies of surface ions, ?Us, for semi-infinite solids. The hydration free energy of gaseous Ions, ?Fh, together with the calculated binding energy of surface ions, ?Us, allows calculation of the hydration energy of surface ions, ?Gh, as for the case of the ionic solid, MX:

The Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada, commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable affecting the structural characteristics of the calcine, which in turn affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature has been closely monitored since October 2000. The original design temperature was 550° C. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500° C resulted in a gold recovery increase of more than six percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an ?intelligent? process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures, thus obtaining high gold recoveries of 92 to 93 percent. Under these conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease in gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g., porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

The most common method used for cleaning the fine fraction in today's coal preparation plants is froth flotation. Past research and practice has found that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, its efficiency decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases due to the flotation of high-ash particles having a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the coal surface. Since gravity-based processes are much more efficient at treating middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine coal cleaning has been studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine circuit feed. Results will be shown from a parametric study using a Falcon centrifugal concentrator which reveals that the separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content, and feed rate.

The Central Florida Phosphate District is located in southwestern Polk, southeastern Hillsborough, Manatee, and Hardee Counties, Florida, flanking the.southern end of a major structural uplift known a the Ocala arch. Ore control problems here are varied and unique due to non-homogeneity of matrix and high volume mining operations. Overburden stripping and matrix mining are performed by large draglines, the matrix being slurrified and transported to the processing plants hydraulically. Production geologists' responsibilities include, 1) prediction of special mining problems, 2) prediction of ore quality and quantity, and 3) the physical control of the ore quality and recovery during mining. prediction is based on core drilling and visual inspection and analysis of the core samples. Basic economic, and physical minability criteria are thus established. Ore grade and tonnage recovery are of particular importance with emphasis being placed on coordination between mining and processing personnel. Routine inspection of the working pit face is of prime importance and both physical and quality variations are pointed out to the mining supervision. Physical problems in ore control occur due to erratic clay, dolomitic limestone and sand lenses. Near surface ground water is abundant, posing a threat to recovery. Contaminants of the phosphate ore are large quartz grains, pebbles of cemented quartz sand, clay balls, iron oxide laminac and dolomitic limestone particles. Success of the ore control program is predicated on a balance between predicted ore tonnages and grade and actual production. The geologists' primary attention is directed toward this balance.

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. A further feature of the Metprotech process is that it is possible to add cyanide to the mill feed

In mining, individual operating divisions can be treated as responsibility centers, known as profit or cost centers. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of profit (revenues and costs).

An emerging technology for sustainable development in mineral development, tailings co-disposal™ is a means to dispose of conventional mill tailings within the void space of a waste rock dump. This method, while not applicable to all tailings systems, can offer a significant reduction in short-term and long-term environmental liability, land disturbance, closure costs, and negative public image. The concept is to dispose of the tailings simultaneously with the waste rock or leach ore, controlling the ratio of tailings to coarse material such that the resulting dump is stable both physically and chemically. The resulting co-disposal dump can be as safe as a conventional waste dump. In the case of alkaline tailings in a potentially acidic waste dump, the acid production can be buffered or slowed.

The Tambomachay ore deposit (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W, about 6 km north of the town of Cuzco, Peru) consists of Cu hosted in arkosic red beds of the Kayra Formation (Lower Eocene). Bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covelite, digenite, malachite, and chrysocolla occur disseminated in thin layers and in veinlets. The occurrence of the copper ores in a part of the red bed sequence containing green reducing layers, the presence of organic matter in interstices between the hypogene sulfides, and the sulfur composition of the copper sulfides (δ34S values between -16.9 and -12.4‰ vs VCDT) pointing to bacterial sulfate reduction, are strong arguments to propose that mineralization was caused by copper-bearing oxidizing saline basinal fluids that precipitate copper sulfides when they meet reduced sulfur in an organic matter-rich horizon. Faults parallel to the regional Tambomachay Fault could have acted as feeders for oxidizing basinal copper-bearing fluids. Fluid migration was probably driven by tectonically-induced topography gradient. INTRODUCTION A number of red bed Cu occurrences are known in the Cuzco region in the early Eocene – early Oligocene San Jerónimo Group (Gregory, 1916; Carlotto et al., 1996, 2011; Loza et al., 2004). In the past, copper ores were extracted in several small-scale mines in the surroundings of Cuzco, including Tambomachay, Tipón, and Zurite in the Cusco province and Ushpa, Guilda, Giovanna, and Langui in the Sicuani Province. The abandoned Tambomachay Mine (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W), about 6 km to the north of the town of Cuzco (Romero et al., 2015; Salcedo et al., 2017, Fig. 1) was chosen as the main site for the present research aimed to better study the genesis of these copper occurrences. Results deriving from fieldwork, microscopic characterization of ore and host rock, and sulfur isotope determination suggest that the key factor for the genesis of the copper ores is that copper transported by oxidizing basinal fluids is trapped by reduced sulfur of bacteriogenic origin located in a part of the red bed sequence that shows intercalatins of green reduced horizons.

The advanced cryogenic treatment is a post-manufacturing metallurgical process that involves subjecting off-theshelf materials to extremely low temperatures, significantly improving wear resistance and reliability. These case studies explore whether the claims of Enrich Bits & Tools benefit metals and their specific in-field application to drill bits in the blasting industry. This paper reviews the application of the treatment to button drill bits for enhanced wear resistance in two operations. The first is a civil construction project with highly abrasive rock. To confirm the remarkable benefits of the treatment, a second case study was performed. This case study utilized measure-while-drilling technology in consistent rock characteristics to reduce variables in the field study.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a United States Department of Energy facility located in southeastern New Mexico. It is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic radioactive waste in deep geologic salt beds. Westinghouse TRU Solutions, LLC, the managing and operating contractor, undertook a project to simulate the processes at WIPP in order to identify bottlenecks and optimize available resources. The activities simulated in the model included the receipt, processing and disposal of radioactive waste underground, the mining of new areas for future waste disposal and the transportation of salt out of the mine. The complexity of the processes and the interactive requirements between processes required the use of advanced modeling techniques. The simulation model includes a huge number of locations and path network node points, with movement to and from the locations controlled using parameters rather than explicit routing. Information for the timing and sequence of the mining and nuclear waste emplacement operations is brought into the model via spreadsheets. Arrays in the simulation model keep track of past and future events that occur. Routing to the multiple possible positions in the underground mine is done using attributes, and system functions within ProModel in order to allow for a highly flexible sequence of planned events and to reduce the level of effort in creating the ProModel processing. Considerable use of subroutines in the simulation model is utilized for parametric decision-making that is repetitive. This presentation describes the modeling techniques used to accurately simulate the surface and underground operations. The surface and underground operations are considerably different, thus they will be treated in their own sections.

Intensive ventilation is required during the excavation of a mine opening and the subsequent exploitation of the mineral resources. The exchange of heat between the ventilation air and the rock mass has a major influence on the thermal regime of a mine, especially in the initial segment of the airway. In frozen ground, heat flow into the rock mass from the ventilation air can result in the eventual thawing of the permafrost, which can result in roof-rock instability. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of the dispersion process of ventilation-induced heat by thermosyphons placed on the surface of the mine. The principal uses of thermosyphons in the Arctic are to reduce the ground temperature to prevent potentially unstable permafrost from thawing and to increase the bearing strength of the material. The mathematical model of the physical problem, generally known as "the Stephan problem," takes into account the varying thermo-physical properties of air and the frozen and thawed rock mass, the thermal properties of the freeing fluid in the thermosyphons and the phase change of water. Finite-difference techniques were employed to determine the temperature isotherms around the thermosyphons. It was found that two rows of thermosyphons on a 10- x 10-m grid provide an acceptable design spacing for reducing the ground temperature around the mine airway.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated leaching of off-grade western United States phosphate deposits using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. A combination of ore grinding followed by sulfuric acid in methanol leaching extracted over 80 pct of the phosphate. This leaching technique significantly limited the dissolution of iron, aluminum, and magnesium impurities and produced a phosphoric acid that was well within the desired limits for these impurities. The dissolution rate of phosphate rock in the sulfuric acid methanol system was significantly slower than the conventional aqueous sulfuric acid dissolution. Initially dissolution of the phosphate particle was controlled by the amount of surface area available to the sulfuric acid reactant. After about an hour of leaching, phosphate dissolution was slowed almost to a stop, limited by the rate of ion diffusion through the calcium sulfate barrier layer surrounding the unreacted phosphate particle. Consequently, the ore was ground below 38-pm to increase the particle surface area available and improve the overall dissolution kinetics and extraction. In addition, the sulfuric acid was slowly metered into the reactor to prevent any excess heat from the mixing of acid with the methanol from simulating the formation of methyl sulfates. The formation of methyl sulfate ultimately lowered the overall phosphate extraction by exhausting the supply of available sulfate ions for the dissolution reaction. Subsequent evaporation of the methanol from the product acid decomposed the methyl sulfates leaving undesirable sulfate ions in the product acid. Slow acid addition to the reactor provided high phosphate extraction and limited the amount of sulfate in the final product acid.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. 9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. Introduction The successful performance of a mine-wide fire detection system depends upon its ability to detect the presence of a fire rapidly and reliably. It should be sufficiently rapid so that there remains enough time to either safely evacuate a mine or successfully extinguish and control the fire or both. It should be reliable so that false alarms are minimized without sacrificing sensitivity or time response. Systems should also be durable enough to withstand the mine environment over long periods of time while maintaining a high degree of re1iability. Maintenance and calibration of the system should be simp1 e and not require the expenditure of excessive time and manpower to keep it operational. Sensitivity, reliability, and durability of mine fire sensors and their electronic support systems have been the subject of significant Bureau research within recent years. The bulk of this type of information, along with the reports from which the remainder of this paper is derived, can be found in the Bibliography. It suffices to say that there exist commercially available systems for use in mines. This paper addresses a strategy for the use of such sensors and systems. Many factors influence the design of a mine-wide fire detection system, such as the potential sources and modes of ignition, the types of combustibles involved and the quantities avai1able for fire growth and flame spread. Mine air ventilation influences the growth and spread of a fire and also serves to transport the products-of-combustion to other areas of a mine remote from the fire. Fire sensor alarm thresholds place limits on the sizes of fires that can be detected. The time to respond to a detected fire, either in terms of evacuation or control and extinguishment, place additional time constraints on the design of fire detection systems. These factors interact with each other, often in complex ways, and it is the definition and understanding of these factors and their interactions that hold the key to the design of adequate and re1iable fire detection systems. Our level of understanding of the problem has increased dramatically within recent years and it is the intent of this paper to discuss the progress that has been made and how the information can best be used to improve the level of fire detection in underground mines.

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage process with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the
