The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

The Wellington Dam catchment has high value water, agriculture and coal and power generating resources. These conflicting land uses are managed through consultation and regulation. The Wellington Dam catchment is unique in that the Collie Coal Basin is located almost to the edge of the dam and has coal mining and power generation as its primary land use. Currently the dam is only used for irrigation due to its high salinity. The State Government has committed to reduce the damÆs salt levels to below 600 mg/L by 2015 so that it can be considered for public drinking water supply. The coal industry in conjunction with the community and State Government has worked together to enhance the water quality within the Wellington Dam to maximise its value and use by using mine dewater for industry, diverting saline Collie River flows, providing environmental (social) flows and enhancing water quality of mine voids to encourage new industry to the Collie Region. Both surface and groundwater in the coal basin are generally fresh, whereas the salinity in the Collie River East Branch generally ranges between 3000 to 20 000 mg/L and 1700 to 10 000 mg/L in the South Branch. Mine dewatering is currently two to three times greater than the recharge to the coal basin. As a result, all mine dewater is sent to power stations in the area, with excess discharged into drainage lines which flow into the South Branch of the Collie River. To maintain environmental and social flows some groundwater is also pumped to the South and East Branches of the Collie River during summer months. Completed mine voids are used for recreation and options for aquaculture are promising. However, handback criteria are yet to be finalised.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after KalgoorlieÆs Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is typically both coarse grained and erratically distributed.

The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. The object of this paper is to show in some detail the mining challenges that have been presented and overcome during the successful development of the main exhaust ventilation drive that will service the Ballarat East mine during its 20+ year lifespan. Topics to be discussed in this paper include the ground support regimes employed, the ground conditions encountered during construction, how the heading was recovered after falls of ground and the effectiveness of geotechnical probe drilling at Ballarat.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

The Henderson Mine has been utilising a continuous panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore since starting operation in 1976. In the past three decades since the mine was designed, many changes have taken place in underground technology as well as the general nature of the mining business. The impacts of larger scale underground equipment and automation are significant at Henderson and continue to reshape the nature of the enterprise. During the first years of operation in the 1970s, Henderson required almost 2000 employees to achieve full production, today only about 400 people are required to fully utilise the plantÆs capacity. The most recent change to the facility is the conversion from a rail haulage system to an underground crushing and conveying system that transports ore 25 km to the Henderson mill site. This change has required the introduction of large, rubber tired haulage trucks underground and the mining methods necessary to develop the large openings demanded by the trucks and underground crusher. The development of the underground crusher is also the first step to mining the final bottom horizon of the orebody. Along with this move comes an opportunity to almost triple the effectiveness of the mining effort, through higher draw columns and wider draw bell spacing. This final advancement to a totally trackless mine has positioned Henderson well for safe and efficient operation as it enters the 21st century.

In the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, Brazil, hard and soft high-grade hematite ore may occur as schistose bodies in shear zones mainly related to the Cambotas-Fundpo thrust system. These orebodies are almost entirely constituted of oriented specularite platelets that develop both as a product of crystal-plastic deformation of hematite and solution-precipitation processes. Both mechanisms interact in the partitioning of the strain, while solution-precipitation is responsible for the precipitation of hematite and localised leaching of silica resulting in the formation of syntectonic ores. The analyses of fluid inclusions from specularite crystals of the Conceitpo and Timbopeba deposits, located in the northern and southernmost areas of the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, were studied using infrared microthermometry and Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The results indicate the participation of highly saline aqueous H2O-NaCl fluids containing other additional cations (Ca, Fe, K and probably Ti) in solution and homogenisation Temperature (Th) averaging between 130¦ - 190¦C. However, the partial fusion of metastable saturation phases indicates crystallisation temperatures of approximately 400¦C. The mineralisation process produces high-grade orebodies as well as Fe-rich specularitic itabirites that are explored in that area. The shear zones are related to thrust faults mapped and interpreted as related to the PanAfrican/Brasiliano Orogeny that affected the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, thrusting the Paleoproterozoic platform sequence of the Minas Supergroup over Mesoproterozoic quartzites of the Espinhato Supergroup. They intersect and even overprint an early metamorphic and tectonic fabric of Paleoproterozoic age (Transamazonian Orogeny). The geological and fabric relationships lead to the conclusion that the fluids involved in the mineralisation were most probably of external origin, of still unknown source (possibly igneous), during the closure of the Spo Francisco Craton.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

"A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. A methodology for the fatigue life estimation of load haul dumpers, employed in underground platinum mines, has been developed and applied. This method entails the quantification of operating conditions by means of stress measurements. The measurements are then translated into a fatigue loading factor for a finite element model. The results of this analysis are then used to compare all the critical connections in the structure to detail categories in relevant fatigue codes, and predict a life in operating hours for the vehicle structure. The method was applied on a specific model and the results of this analysis were compared to actual failure occurrences with reasonable accuracy. It is intended that the methodology be embedded into performance specifications and purchasing contracts and that technology transfer to OEMs be achieved. Based on the experience of this project and other similar exercises it is estimated that structural life expectancies may be increased across a typical fleet of trackless mining vehicles (LHDs, drill rigs, utility vehicles, dump trucks) by at least 20 per cent.

Those developing or planning a new mining operation base their financial projections on amounts of gold produced as soon as practically possible. The choice and ongoing operation of mobile plant figures significantly in their projections. The implications of mobile plant selection are not always clear - until its too late.Our 'typical' gold mine would be a mine processing 800,000 tonnes of ore per annum, producing 37,000 ounces of gold with a life of mine of 10 years. Overburden layers are only evident in the first two years of operation.The pit will eventually, after some 5 years of mining, be some 300 metres deep, but confined to a mine radius of 2 kilometres.

This paper presents details of CRC MiningÆs work with waterjet assisted blasthole drilling. The objective of this work was to investigate techniques that reduce the cost and increase the productivity of blasthole drilling. The focus is on a technology that uses a high pressure waterjet to assist the conventional rotary rock cutting action of a tricone drill bit. The potential benefits of this technique are increased productivity, reduced drill bit wear and reduced hole deviation and hence improved quality of drilling. This paper describes the results of a laboratory based experimental program comparing conventional tri-cone drilling performance to the proposed waterjet assisted approach. Additionally, work has been completed looking at the more practical issues around the collection and sampling of drill cuttings and water recovery (recycling) when drilling with a waterjet. These studies have demonstrated that waterjet assisted drilling can significantly increase the rate of penetration over conventional rotary drilling. For the best-case experimental result, the relative improvement was over 40 per cent. More importantly, it is a starting point for examining alternative uses of the additional drill productivity obtained from waterjet assisted drilling. For example, increased drill productivity could be used to improve rock fragmentation by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern in the same time period. an existing drill fleet, then the drill fleet size could be reduced, or improved rock fragmentation could be achieved by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern within the same time period.

Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. The paper advocates for an increase in participatory mechanisms with affected parties, which could lead towards a greater mutual understanding of the impacts and draw parties closer together.CITATION:Tapia Rivera, R, Kirsch, P A and Clark, P, 2014. his report is going to point to that the effect of the mining dewatering on the area of Transdanubian Mountain Range has reached a phase when the cost of dewatering and providing damages can seriously jeopardize a profitable mining operation. Up to 60s the interest of mining had been dominant only, but since the begining of 80s the conceptions of industrial development and the value of enviroment protection have been changed. The natural karstwater balance of the TMR can be presented (Figure Land 2.) and the present situation of it points to that the descharge has exceeded the reacharge in 50 %. During the past 10 years the decreasing of the stored karstic water resourches was 1.1 km . The decreasing of the spring yields reached 80-82 % of the natural ones. (Figure 3-4.). Conservation of the present discharge may lead up to the totaly drain of the karstwater regime. A computer aid control system had been to develop by the bauxite mining and using of it the yield of dewatering decreased and a moderate rising of the water table has started since 1986. A recunstruction was made at the biggest thermal-medicinal lake its springs have had their source in 40 meter depth inside a spring cave at the bottom of the lake. Earlier the spring yield decreased due to the dewatering activity of mines. As a result of using of the CAC system and the providing works at the thermal sprino,the karstwater balance has got in the state of equilibrum, the first cost was decreased and spring yield was increased and the enviromental limits were adverted from the way of mining.
