The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

Quantitative analysis of Platinum Group Metals from ore samples and industrial materials using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer(AAS), and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques was conducted and the performance of various techniques was compared. The effects of different matrices in the sample materials were compared and discussed for each analytical technique. The ICP-AES technique exhibited better accuracy than AAS but showed limitations in its application due to strong spectral interference in the presence of common matrix elements such as iron. The ICP-MS showed the lowest detection limit and less spectral interferences than the previous two techniques. The XRF technique was also applied to examine the total amount of PGM from industrial materials. Results from each analytical method on various sources were presented and discussed.

This presentation will define what talc is, how it is mined and processed, and how talc is used in the paper industry. It will also give you some idea about who Luzenac America is and from where it came. Luzenac America was formed in July, 1992 as a result of the acquisition of the talc assets of Cyprus Minerals by RTZ of the United Kingdom. Cyprus Industrial Minerals was then merged with the other RTZ talc interests under the Luzenac name. Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

The Falconbridge Dominicana laboratory receives samples from all parts of the operation. Ore, metal and oil samples are taken by operating departments, gas and water samples by the laboratory staff. Physical sample preparation is essentially standard and produces comminuted samples for wet-chemical analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). T he main operating sections of the laboratory are described indicating in each case the type of instrumentation and method used, sample types analysed and comments on problems experienced. Emphasis is given to the sample preparation and X-ray sections especially with regard to the difficulties caused by our heterogenous ore material, calibration of the instrument and operational malfunctions. General problems related to our remote location and the tropical climate are discussed. Limited statistics on instrument availability, and stability, accuracy, precision, etc., are given.

More than 544 Mt (600 million st) of coal are handled annually for use by this country's coal fired power plants. Coal is transported in various ways: overland conveyors, railcars, trucks and barges. It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise. To ensure that power plant availability is not jeopardized by coal handling problems, the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) developed a research program aimed at addressing utility coal handling problems. The program has identified key areas, and is investigating the cost and cause of coal handling problems as well as the solutions to these problems. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop a "handleability index" that utilities can use in their coal specifications or hardware for a utility's sampling system to predict handleability and determine if a coal shipment should be accepted.

The optimisation of mineral processing plants requires the evaluation of performance indices such as production rate, product quality, valuable mineral recovery and process efficiency. Decision to change operating conditions or equipment to improve plant performances rely on the significancy of the estimated performance indices. The better is the quality of the estimation, the better is the discrimination capability of the index and as a consequence the larger is the operation improvement. The reliability of performance calculation depends on the sensors nature, accuracy and location, on the data redundancy, on the correction method applied to raw data and finally on the propagation of measurement errors along the calculation of performance indices. To maximize the quality of the data collected for performance evaluation, the following techniques are presented, discussed and illustrated: redundancy and observability analysis, data filtering for mass conservation, variance analysis of performance calculation, and data acquisition strategy design.

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

The Zadra, AARL and organic elution processes and variations of them are presently widely used to recover gold from activated carbon. Despite this the study of the kinetics of elution have received relatively little attention. It is the aim of this study to investigate the rate processes taking place during elution in both inorganic and organic solutions. Batch adsorption and elution rate and equilibrium experiments were performed. The spatial concentration of gold inside carbon particles at various stages of the adsorption and elution processes were measured with a scanning electron microscope using an image analyzer to control and manage the micro-analysis data. The activated carbon particles exhibited film and intra-particle mass transfer rate- controlled behaviour during adsorption in a caustic aqueous solution at 95°C. Elutions in the aqueous caustic acetone solution at 30°C and the caustic aqueous solution at 95°C were unaffected by change in stirring rate. Elution was modelled by desorption reaction rate-control at the outer surface of the carbon particle. Adsorption and elution isotherms under duplicated solution conditions showed reasonable agreement for the inorganic solution and a large disparity for the organic solution.

Introduction Screening is defined as a mechanical process which separates particles on the basis of their size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. The key element in this method of particle sizing is obviously the screening surface, the medium that contains the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. This surface must be strong enough to support the weight of the material being screened, flexible enough to yield to the vibrating force applied to it, yet light enough to provide a reasonable ratio of open area to attain a practical through- put. The Automated Minerals Information System (AMIS) is an integrated data base system being developed to support the Bureau of Mines minerals information collection and analysis activities. The system facilitates cross-referencing and integration of domestic and foreign information from a variety of sources. The AMIS provides a central source of minerals information that is versatile and responsive to the needs of problem and policy analysts as well as supporting the needs of those involved in data collection and interpretation. As the AMIS becomes fully implemented, it will become an important tool in forecasting and assessing the impact of policy decisions that affect the supply and demand for minerals. The Bureau of Mines has long been the Federal Government's principal source of worldwide information on non-fuel minerals. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of mineral problems and policies as they affect the world's nonfuel mineral resources. To facilitate timely and accurate analysis, comprehensive data on 87 commodities are collected by various Bureau programs. Minerals information is made available through a number of periodic publications including the annual Minerals Yearbook and monthly Mineral Industry Surveys. These data collection and analysis activities have traditionally been supported by over 200 separate information processing systems. The Bureau of Mines has begun to implement a broad information strategy to provide a better response to the mineral problems and issues of the 1980's. The cornerstone of the Bureau of Mines information strategy is the development of the Automated Minerals Information System. When fully operational, we believe that the AMIS will provide the Bureau of Mines with the most comprehensive source of minerals information available anywhere in the world.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. Foundry sands used to make molds and cores have been very important to foundrymen since metal casting began hundreds of years ago. They are now used in two basic ways, either in an uncured green state, grain-bonded with clay, or in a set cured state achieved with sand that, mixed with resins or oils, is cured by baking or by chemical reaction. The term sand, as generally used in foundry applications, may best be defined as material composed of granular particles of mineral matter, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter. The particulate nature of the material may be the result of natural disaggregation or result from crushing and screening of rock or ceramic materials; crushed and screened products are sometimes referred to as "manufactured sand." Based on their origin, the raw materials for foundry sands will vary in grain shape, grain composition, relative surface, grain size, and grain distribution patterns. These properties, in addition to their chemical analyses, sintering point and expansion characteristics play an important part in the choice of sands used as the base molding or core aggregate in metal casting. Sands with different origins may be blended to produce specific compositions and grain size distributions. Early raw material requirements based on silica sand were simple, but as sand/core/mold technology became more sophisticated and binder technology continued to be developed, the physical properties of foundry sands became more critical. Silica sand is composed of quartz, along with, in most cases, small amounts of feldspar, mica, clay, and other common minerals. Although silica sand is still by far the most widely used base material in production of molds and cores used in metal casting, other natural mineral sands have their own unique characteristics and fill an important niche in special applications. As a result, the term sand, as applied to raw materials used in metal casting, has been logically extended to include granular materials composed of a group of minerals other than quartz. With increased use in advanced foundry technology, natural sands composed predominantly of zircon, chromite, staurolite, or aluminum silicate minerals and of granularized chromite or olivine, have become more than just alternate materials and are now commonly classified as sands when the grains are sand-sized. Foundry sand may therefore be considered under two categories: silica sands and non-silica sands.

The feasibility of mining deep phosphate deposits by a borehole mining system was compared with mining by proven conventional techniques. An economic comparison of the borehole mining system with conventional dragline and bucket wheel excavator mining systems was completed at various mining depths and production rates. Hypothetical phosphate deposits, with various overburden thicknesses and reserve tonnages, were defined. Geologic conditions necessary for the application of the borehole system were identified. Discounted cash flow analyses based on derived capital and operating costs were used to generate rates of return and product prices. Borehole mining was found to be more economical where overburden thickness was 46 m (150 ft) or greater. However, at 15- and 30-m (50- and 100-ft) thicknesses, conventional surface mining was more economical. Overburden thickness has a great effect on the economic feasibility of the conventional mining systems but less effect on the economics of borehole mining. Economies of scale are only realized in conventional mining, since larger equipment is used to achieve greater production, whereas increased production from borehole mining is achieved using additional equipment units. A comparison of the environmental effects of borehole and conventional surface mining systems showed that borehole mining is environmentally more desirable.

The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 years before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there .is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages.

In July, 1988, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines recommended that the Secretary of Labor set in motion a mechanism whereby a diesel particulate standard can be set. Prerequisite to establishing a standard would be the development and evaluation of instrumentation to measure diesel particulate. In response, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Dust Division, has been evaluating instrumentation that can be used to determine diesel particulate levels in underground mines. This instrumentation employs the principle of impaction to separate particles by size, thereby, separating the diesel and nondiesel particulate. Separation of the particulate by size was chosen because diesel particulate is generally less than 1.0 micrometer in size. No other methods have been developed to successfully distinguish between the coal and diesel particulate. MSHA developed an impactor that is inexpensive and compatible with existing pumps and filter holders. The instrumentation evaluation has primarily focused on the repeatability and performance of several personal dust samplers. The samplers tested include the Sierra-Andersen Model 298 personal impactor and MSHA developed personal impactor. The MSHA impactor is inexpensive and compatible with the existing pumps and filter holders. In addition to evaluating the precision and performance of these instruments, tests have been conducted to determine background levels of submicron particulate in nondieselized coal mines and to measure the submicron particulate content in dieselized coal mines. Tests were conducted in coal mines where diesel equipment was used only in outby areas and also in coal mines where diesel equipment was used for face haulage. This paper describes the results of the tests and provides a description of the instrument at ion used to conduct the tests.

The 191 million acres of public lands that are managed as National Forest System Lands contain extensive geologic habitat for over 40 industrial minerals. The Forest Service actively encourages exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits within the National Forests. However, due to competing interests, the Forest Service may not always be able to accommodate industry needs. In order to successfully compete with ever-increasing demands for all resources in the 1990's, industry needs to become more active in public involvement and education and in communicating its contributions and needs to public land managers.

A model has been developed that describes the behavior of mineral particles and water in the cleaning zone of flotation columns. The possible detachment of particles from their sites of attachment at the bubble surfaces is related to the flux of bubble surface area with increasing distance from the interface between the collection and cleaning zones and the late at which floated particles are transported into the cleaning zone. The drainage velocities of floated and entrained particles are calculated from the drainage velocity of water and the properties of the particles. The effects of wash water and inhibited drainage in the froth are also explicitly accounted for.

Transformation of the measured borehole deformations induced by stress relief relies on the traditional assumption that the rock is continuous and homogeneous. Systematic and quantitative tests were carried out to check the performance of devices commonly used for measuring borehole deformations within different types of discontinuous rock conditions. Test results provide a reliable basis for considering the influence of discontinuities on in situ stress measurement and for choosing the best measuring device for a given rock type and condition.

Single-charge cratering tests can provide a direct measure of the powder factor necessary for achieving a desired effect in conventional blasting. If a desired blast effect, such as fragmentation or mound velocity, is produced by a single point-charge at a particular scaled depth of burial, then the cube of the reciprocal of that scaled depth is the appropriate powder factor for duplicating the effect in a conventional array of blast holes. This chapter describes the development of a computer code which rapidly estimates the cost of producing coal from either surface or underground mining situations. The computer code, termed the coal production cost (CPC) code, was developed under an NUS corporate research grant and was based on the findings of several coal mining and cost research analyses performed by NUS over a three-year period. The studies which served as the primary basis for the CPC code were the coal mining cost models developed by NUS for the Electric Power Research Institute. These models were designed for use in manual analyses and have been published by EPRI (Toth, 1977; and Stinnett, 1977).
