Hecla Mining Company and NIOSH cooperated in a study to document the safety of rock support supplied by reinforced cemented paste backfill at the Lucky Friday Mine. Data are presented on backfill modulus values from laboratory tests and compared with modulus values from in-mine wall closure on the backfill. It is theorized that a compressive zone is created in the backfill between the upper and lower bearing plates on the reinforcing bolts, and that the backfill remains stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent bolts overlap.

The feasibility of chalcopyrite-pyrite separation in the flotation of a chalcopyritic copper ore, at reduced surface tensions regulated by methanol, was investigated. It was found that with methanol dosages from 0.5% to 1.5% v/ v, the chalcopyrite might be effectively separated from the pyrite, without use of other flotation reagents and pH regulators. However, under this simple condition, the chalcopyrite recovery was only around 50%, recommending the use of other reagents to reinforce the collector action. Low dosages of different collectors were tested, including SF-323 (Shell Float), S-6588 and S-7251 (Cytec), and S-701 (Molycop). Very promising results were obtained with low dosages of the collector S-701 and 1% v/v of methanol in the pulp, which evaluated against a reference test, gave similar copper recovery, higher Mo recovery and higher depression of pyrite. Consequently, this is an alternative process which does not require the use of lime to depress pyrite.

The beneficiation of phosphate is complicated due to its sparingly soluble nature. The surface proper- ties of phosphate and associated minerals are determined, in addition to the ionic composition of the solution, by the dissolution of the lattice ions of the minerals and subsequent complexation, hydrolysis, adsorption, and precipitation of the dissolved species. These, in turn, are influenced by the pretreatment of the mineral. These complex interactions determine the interfacial properties of phosphate and associated minerals and thereby the efficiency of beneficiation processes such as flotation and flocculation. Under- standing of the chemistry involved in such systems is helpful to develop the optimum beneficiation schemes. It is shown that desired selectivity can be achieved by controlling the chemistry of the systems. More important, the need to conduct development tests under plant conditions is clearly demonstrated.

This paper reviews some of the factors involved in selecting amine flotation reagents used to remove silica from ores. A comparison is made between the chemical reagent design approaches used to identify flotation reagents that are used to recover silica- and oxygen-containing minerals and the chemical reagents used to recover sulfide minerals. This introduction gives practitioners who are involved with oxide- and carbonate-type minerals and who may not be familiar with sulfide mineral flotation some ideas of the chemical reagent design challenges that exist with froth flotation on a broader scale and why oxide type mineral flotation reagents are what they are. This is followed by several sections that discuss various classes of available amines. The closing sections emphasize that the optimal choice of an amine collector depends not only on that amine's specific chemical characteristics and costs but also on the operating conditions, especially the flotation feed particle size distribution.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. The entire system is built around pre-designed and pre-engineered modules which are assembled to meet the metallurgical and production parameters of the project. The carbon vessels are the key to the flexibility of the system. The vessels are made of a coated mild steel, which allows the carbon vessels to be used in the adsorption, desorption and acid wash cycles. In the adsorption mode, the solution is pumped up-flow through four (4) vessels in series at 250 gpm fluidizing the carbon bed. When the carbon in the lead vessel is loaded, it is disconnected from the adsorption circuit via rubber hoses with quick-disconnect fittings. The second vessel is then made the lead vessel and a stripped carbon vessel is added to the end of the adsorption circuit.

Subsurface migration of cyanide is attenuated by naturally occurring geochemical and biogeochemical processes. Geochemical mechanisms which remove or immobilize cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes include precipitation/coprecipitation, sorption, and volatilization. Geochemical properties of soils and geochemical materials that promote the functioning of these mechanisms include the following: 1) acidic soil pH; 2) presence of illite and smectite clays; and 3) presence of iron hydrous-oxides and organic carbon. Naturally occurring soil microorganisms play perhaps a more important role in attenuating cyanide movement than previously realized. Biodegradation of cyanide is a "renewable" process, limited in its effectiveness by the avalibility of oxygen and micronutrlents (usually phosphate) to the microorganisms.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.

"The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

Successful leaching of gold depends on appropriate chemical conditions; contact between leach solution and the gold particles; separation of the leach solution from the solids and extraction of the valuable ion from the solution. Irrespective of the leaching method employed the chemical conditions required are similar as is the dependence of solu­tion/gold contact on liberation. The various leaching methods available vary in the means by which gold/solution contact and solid/liquid separation are achieved. The essential difference between heap or vat leaching techniques and those involving agitation of a slurry is dependence on percolation for effective gold/solution contact. The most significant factor preventing uniform percolation is the presence of fines or clays. The quantity and character of the fines fraction is ore type dependent and may result from crushing, degradation during stacking or leaching, or the natural size distribution of the ore. The problems associated with fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the heap. Segregation during stacking can result in concentration of fine particles at the centre of heaps. Further concentration of fines may also occur during irrigation by the movement of the fine particles with the solution. The end result is that the areas in which fines are concentrated become areas of low permeability. The contact between leach solution and the ore in such areas is, at best, slowed down dramatically and, in some cases, prevented altogether. The consequences of this phenomena are slow leaching and a reduction in recovery. The conventional solution to this problem is well known. Agglomeration of ore prior to heap leaching is practised widely. The effect of agglomeration is to immobilise the fines by causing them to adhere either to each other or to larger ore particles. The net effect is that the ore behaves as if no fines were present. The use of agglomeration is limited only by its cost, the most significant components of which are the cost of binding agent, commonly cement, and the capital cost of the agglomerating equipment.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyurethane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft- are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety. Although these heavy polyurethanes lend themselves to a "pouring" application around the annulus of the shaft liners and is a continuous process, past experience with atomizing and frothing polyurethane spray systems indicates a high degree of maintenance and operator attention to the nozzle1 delivery system. This may require more miner's time to be spent in the shaft maintaining the foam system, negating some of the safety advantages of the system. If polyurethane foams are to be used in mines, they must be of the highest quality available in terms of flame spread, heat emitted while curing, and contaminants emitted while curing and spraying. In addition, employees must be given adequate training and be thoroughly informed in all aspects of polyurethane foam safety procedures. As witnessed by our fellow miners in South Africa, we can accept no less.

Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

Rhodes Mining NL, Perth, Australia, is developing the Lahoca Gold Project which is located in Hungary, about 30 km from the town of Eger. The preliminary resource is estimated to contain approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold. The project is being evaluated for an annual process capacity of 2 million tonnes. The test samples contain just over 2 g Ault and 6% sulfur as sulfide. Copper and arsenic levels are approximately 0.2 and 0.1 %, respectively. The ore is refractory due to submicroscopic gold occurrences and structural associations with pyrite. A small amount of the gold is finely encapsulated in quartz. Approximately 30% of the gold in the crushed ore is soluble in cyanide and up to about 55% is cyanide-recoverable with ultra­fine grinding. The ore has little preg-robbing ability. Metallurgical test work done by Colorado Minerals Research Institute (CMRI) and other investigators has shown that as much as 85 to over 90% of the gold was recovered by the relatively severe conditions of pressure oxidation or roasting of the whole ore or a flotation concentrate. The Lahoca ore responds to flotation with gold recoveries of 87% into a low grade concentrate. Subsequently, with a view toward defining a process route with potentially more attractive economics, Rhodes Mining and CMRI conducted an extensive review of biooxidation technologies and concluded that, in particular, heap biooxidation methods promised lower process costs which normally are associated with heap leaching. Based on the study, which included the analysis of the closely related practices of copper dump/heap bioleaching now well established in that industry, CMRI conducted simulated heap biooxidation experiments which evaluated factors such as ultra fine ore crushing, agglomeration techniques, heap design, forced aeration oxygen supply, and whether or not the heap is irrigated. Separate flask biooxidation tests at Little Bear Laboratories showed that the finely crushed ore is biooxidized readily, with a near linear relationship between sulfide oxidation and gold cyanide solubility. Gold recoveries of as high as 66% have resulted after biooxidation of crushed ore. This paper highlights the metallurgical developments of the Lahoca project, and focuses on recent biooxidation laboratory test work aimed at enhancing the treatment of crushed ore.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. The Bowie chabazite deposit has yielded the most mined tonnage of any natural zeolite deposit in the United States. Since 1962 the deposit has yielded about 12,000 tons of crude chabazite, with an estimated market value of S30 million when sold as an activated molecular -sieve product. Between 1,000 and 1,500 tons of high-purity crude lump chabazite is now produced annually by stripping and selectively mining the lower, massive, half-foot-thick, "high-grade" bed. All of the chabazite is still shipped out of State for grinding prior to extrusion and activation. Zeolite minerals were discovered at the Bowie deposit in 1875, when Oscar Lowe identified a hydrous silicate related to chabazite or stilbite from a tuff bed that cropped out in the San Simon Valley. It was not until 1959, however, that chabzite, erionite, and clinoptilolite were positively identified as the principal constituents of an altered vitric-tuff horizon that crops out in the area originally described by Lowe. Shortly after the rediscovery of zeolite minerals in the San Simon Valley, several of the major producers of synthetic zeolites acquired land positions covering the outcrops, including projected extensions, and began exploration drilling. By 1980 all of the known chabazite reserves had been acquired by five companies and two individuals. The more than 3,000 holes drilled to explore the deposit and the excellent exposures provided by the strip-mined areas indicate that the chabazite-bearing horizon (known as the marker tuff) is confined to a flat-lying lacustrine section known to the operators as the Green Lake Beds. The deposition of the parent airborne vitric ash and subsequent zeolitic alteration was controlled by many factors, including the lake-bottom topography, depth and cation content of the saline-alkaline lake water, and proximity to post-depositional erosion surfaces. Zeolitic alteration was complete when an extensive system of younger paleochannels deeply eroded the Green Lake Beds. This left only a few erosional remnants of the marker tuff and the lower "high-grade-bed" that constitute the present deposit. Both the channel gravels and the Green Lake Beds are overlain by a section of halite-bearing brown mud-stones, known as the Brown Lake Beds. The bowie chabazite deposit can be used as a model to guide the exploration and development of other zeolite deposits that formed in saline-alkaline lacustrine environments.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) forms when sulfide minerals are exposed to oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining, highway construction, and other large-scale excavations. Iron sulfides common in coal regions are predominately pyrite and marcasite (FeS2), but other metals may be complexed with sulfides forming chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS), galena (PbS), and sphalerite (ZnS). Pyrite commonly occurs with these other metal sulfides thereby causing AMD where Cu, Pb, and Zn are mined. Upon exposure to water and oxygen, sulfide minerals oxidize to form acidic, sulfate-rich drainage. Metal concentrations in AMD depend on the type and quantity of sulfide minerals present. The drainage quality emanating from underground mines or backfills of surface mines is dependent on the acid-producing (sulfide) and alkaline (carbonate) minerals contained in the disturbed rock. In general, sulfide-rich and carbonate-poor materials produce acidic drainage. In contrast, alkaline-rich materials, even with significant sulfide concentrations, often produce alkaline conditions in water. Approximately 20,000 km of streams and rivers in the United States are degraded by AMD. About 90% of the AMD reaching streams originates in abandoned surface and deep mines. Since no company or individual claims responsibility for reclaiming abandoned mine lands (AML), no treatment of the AMD occurs and continual contamination of surface and groundwater resources results. The oxidation of iron disulfides and the generation of acidity occur through several reactions (Stumm and Morgan, 1970). The chemical equations can be found in Caruccio and Geidel (2000). If any of the processes represented by the equations were slowed or altogether stopped, the generation of AMD would also slow or cease. The equations show that 1000 Mg of rock containing 1% sulfur, all as pyrite, would yield upon complete reaction 31.25 Mg of acidity. Therefore, 31.25 Mg of 100% CaCO3 would be required to neutralize the acidity. The alkaline content of overburden determines whether there is enough neutralization potential (NP) to counteract the acid produced from pyrite oxidation. Of the many types of alkaline compounds present in rocks, only carbonates and clays occur in sufficient quantity to effectively neutalize AMD. A balance between the acid-producing potential and neutralizing capacity of an overburden sample will indicate the ultimate acidity or alkalinity that might be expected in the material upon complete weathering. Accurate prediction and control of AMD before surface mining require an understanding of three important factors: 1) overburden geochemistry, 2) method and precision of overburden handling and placement in the backfill during reclamation, and 3) the postmining hydrology of the site.

Defining Productivity Productivity is a principal concern to all organizations - industrial, commercial, government, and academic. As a ratio of output to input, productivity measures the efficiency of an industrial process, much as thermodynamic efficiency measures the useful work obtained from the available energy consumed. However, there is one important difference. Whereas thermodynamic efficiency is a dimensionless a ratio of energies, productivity output and input are usually measured in different physical units. Nevertheless, the resulting ratio is a normalized expression for unit of output per unit of input to the process. In the early days of coal, mining was essentially a hand loading operation. There was little expenditure of alternative forms of energy within the process. Loading required expenditures of human energy on the order of 1.2 MJ/t (1,000 Btu per st). And if we accept the conventional value "you load 16 tons," the output to input ratio is 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift. In energy terms, it is on the order of 116 MJ/t (100,000 Btu per st) produced per labor Btu expended. However, the latter measure of efficiency was not meaningful in economic terms, while the 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift was significant. Since labor was the principal component of cost, it represented a direct relationship to the cost of production: [ ] Furthermore, when workers were paid directly on the basis of tons produced, the labor cost per ton was specified directly by this rate. With the introduction of mechanized loading, significant increases in productivity occurred, when measured on the basis of tons per manshift. Electric power consumed about 11.6-116 MJ/t (10,000-100,000 Btu per st). This makes the 29-GJ/t (25 million Btu per st) coal output/input ratio between 100 and 1,000. That is one or two orders of magnitude lower than hand loading. However, electric energy was quite inexpensive compared to labor, which made the mechanization economically efficient. The accepted productivity measure continued to be tons per manshift. This measure includes some of the effects of mechanization: namely, the additional manpower needed to maintain the machines and support the equipment that uses electrical energy. However, it does not consider the capital and operating costs that relate to mechanized equipment. As a result, the concept of tons per machine-shift has emerged as an accepted measure of shift productivity. The only appropriate measure that encorporates the productivity of men and machines is an economic one. The output is the tonnage per shift and the impact is the cost per shift. [ ] This is simply the inverse of the cost per ton. In addition, much flexibility is available in allo¬cating costs to the three categories. This adds a level of intangibility to the measure. The amount of information needed to obtain all of the required costs is appreciable compared to the simple matter of counting tons and workers. Furthermore, financial information relating to production costs is closely held by mining companies, so historical statistics on economic productivity are not publicly available. To extend the concept further, consider the value of the tonnage produced, to obtain a dimensionless ($/$) measure of economic productivity.

About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco's Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco's own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company's Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco's smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco's major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world's needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska's North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will
