THE RECENT and continuing activity in the Boundary district, British Columbia, makes the publication of this paper timely. The following description and discussions are based on two years' experience in the district as Field Manager and Geologist for Attwood Copper Mines, Limited. The Attwood project was organized by Dr. D. F. Kidd to re-examine the Boundary mining camp. Thanks are due to Dr. Kidd, both for his intelligent guidance during the project and for his permission to publish this paper. Much of the data and many of the interpretations presented are credited to the work of, and to discussion with, Dr. W. H. White, Consultant Geologist, who worked for two field seasons on the project. A collaborative project was performed between NRC Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation and MagPower Systems Inc, to develop a cost effective fabrication process to manufacture the anode for magnesium-air fuel cell with improved performance. A novel fabrication process was developed, which resulted in a porous microstructure with increased surface area, instead of the traditional solid structure. This porous anode greatly increased power density in the magnesium-air power source. This fabrication process is very simple and cost effective. Especially, this process makes it convenient to incorporate different alloying additions, as well as hydrogen inhibitor and electrolyte management additive into the anode. The anode composition was designed so that micro galvanic cells were formed as current is drawn out of the fuel cell, and resulting increased dissolution rate of Mg. It is feasible to incorporate hydrogen inhibitor and electrolyte management additive into the porous anode, and the anode with some kinds of inhibitors exhibited improved electrochemical performance. This paper describes the microstructure and electrochemical performance of anodes with designated porous structure and alloying additions. Furthermore, quantitative kinetics analysis of the obtained I-V curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were carried out to clarify the mechanism.

Since approximately 2003 we have witnessed the unprecedented escalation in commodity prices. Coupled with economic chaos following the 2008 economic downturn this has caused difficulties in controlling schedule, capital costs and operating costs for mining projects. Once again escalation has returned to commodity prices fuelled by growth in the BRIC countries especially China and Brazil. This is further exasperated by the missing generation of skilled technical personnel not graduating from universities in the 1980s and 1990s owing to depressed commodity prices. This paper examines the six tenets for successful project implementation.

"Activated carbon is used to recover gold in solution from various gold circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes; however, the characteristics and durability of the activated carbon can vary. Handling this medium poses challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuit discharge. Additionally, adsorbed gold on carbon fines can be lost to the discharge. The studies in this paper aim to standardize laboratory methods for testing activated carbon qualities specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, platelet content, wet attrition resistance, gold kinetics, and gold loading. Les études réalisées dans le cadre de cet article visent à normaliser les méthodes de laboratoire pour tester les qualités du charbon actif spécifiques au secteur de l’exploitation aurifère. L’étude portait sur la composition granulométrique, la teneur des plaquettes, la résistance au frottement humide, la cinétique de l’or et l’adsorption de l’or, à savoir la capacité du charbon actif à adsorber l’or sur une période spécifique. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on reducing gold loss to tailings. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes. Granular activated carbon (Figure 1) is widely used for gold extraction from slurries containing gold-cyanide complexes. This activated carbon—produced from charred coconut shells—is well suited because of its adsorption kinetics, gold-loading capacity, attrition resistance, and ability to be reactivated. The extraction process using activated carbon technology involves adsorbing gold from an aqueous leachate; the gold is dissolved using a cyanide salt and consequently a dicyanoaurate(I) ion (Au(CN)2–) is formed, as noted in equation 1."

ABSTRACT Diesel-powered loaders are a pillar of modern underground metal mining. As these mines are getting deeper and hotter and the emission regulations stricter, ventilation costs are soaring, affecting production cost. Also, the cost of diesel fuel is expected to rise. These may make the use of diesel engines more problematic. Electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are an interesting alternative. This paper compares features and performance of diesel and electric, cable-powered LHDs. It overviews equipment offerings, and compares, analyzes and discusses technical parameters, operational problems and cost issues. The paper gives some conclusions about electric LHD applicability and performance, indicates possible applications, and suggests further research work.

Recycled lead, i.e. material produced by the recycling of lead-acid batteries, has become the primary source of lead in much of the world. This has been important to the recycled lead industry as other uses have dwindled, e.g. lead based pigments, chemicals, fuel additives, solders and CRT glasses. Presently, battery manufacturing accounts for greater than 85% of lead consumption worldwide while recycled lead accounts for approximately the same market share of lead supply. Battery manufacturing and production of recycled lead are intimately coupled. In 2007, of all the industrial base metals, lead from lead-acid batteries had the highest recycling rate in North America at greater than 95%. In this paper we will review some of the processes and technologies used in a modern lead acid battery recycling facility, and how recycled lead has become the material of choice for battery construction through the development of a recovery and refining process that exceeds the industry requirements. We will also briefly review an advanced air emissions treatment system in a modern lead recycling plant that demonstrates the feasibility of a new maximum available control technology (MACT) for secondary lead smelters.

Erosion corrosion is acceleration in the rate of corrosion attack in metal due to the relative motion of a corrosive fluid and a metal surface [1]. The increased turbulence caused by pitting on the internal surfaces of a tube can result in rapidly increasing erosion rates and eventually a leak [2]. Engineers and scientists in different disciplines have worked for many years on methods of complete protection from flow induced corrosion or partially reducing corrosion of this type, and they have proposed or applied different countermeasures [2]. The accident at the Surry-2 nuclear power plant (USA) and other similar incidents have once again disturbed the scientific-technical community. This has forced the plant operating personnel and the management to undertake wide-ranging measures in order to discover on time, assess, and monitor such cases. In these extreme cases, protective coating and even metallic bulk material coating (the substrate itself) may suffer considerably from mechanically induced damage [2]. At high velocities, the "leaching out" dissolution reaction of particular, for example, steel elements at the solid-liquid interface become the rate determining step. One practical example for the difference between erosion corrosion and flow induced corrosion is the famous steam eruption from a Japanese [3, 4] nuclear power plant cooling system at the pressurized water reactor (PWR), turbine and in the condenser-steam generator connecting pipe. The rupture occurred in the carbon steel pipe connecting the condenser and steam generator. The damage occurred in the easily eroded/corroded carbon steel at a vulnerable location downstream of an orifice plate, In general, when there is significant reduction in pipe thickness through erosion/corrosion, distinctive patterns are visible, but those patterns were not observed in this case, Thus one can speculate that another phenomenon is possibly controlling, Fluid flow within pipes reduces the pipe thickness leading to an eventual rupture, The thickness reduction mechanism is erosion/corrosion, One example is "cavitations corrosion", Erosion and corrosion occur at the same time, and it is difficult to determine which one is dominant, Therefore, the term, "erosion/corrosion," is used [5]. In the atomic energy field, the terms "Flow Accelerated Corrosion" and "Flow Induced Corrosion" are also used. It is the purpose here to show that during flow induced corrosion a different mechanism may possibly be operating and in some cases it can be different from the well known erosion corrosion. Another example is fretting failures in early Canadian nuclear steam generators which was thought to be due to excessive vibration caused by high.

Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

Introduction The manufacture of some asbestos products involves the use of asbestos in combination with water, cement and granular fillers. This type of production is often called the wet or semi-wet process and requires the use of either pressure or vacuum to eliminate the excess water in the fibrous blend so that the product may develop the proper strength during the curing stage. Asbestos - cement products available today are numerous and are a valuable contribution to the building industry. Their production in quantity depends upon the type of equipment employed, the speed at which it can be operated, and the factors involving the? blending of asbestos, cement, water, and fillers. Assuming that all mechanical troubles at a plant have been eliminated or are under control it is still advisable to study the basic properties of the raw materials used in the asbestos-cement products. The type of cement used is an important factor, but usually the manufacturer of the cement is willing to work with the asbestos development engineer and recommend the proper type to be used for the product. The source of the water should not be overlooked as a general factor involved in the production cycle. Waters containing a high percentage of contamination such as silts, humus, or soluble salts may adversely affect the setting of the cement or cause a slowing down of the production rate in the factory. Asbestos in combination with cement is an ideal material fo1 building products. It is inorganic, will not deteriorate, and can be handled by mechanical equipment with a minimum reduction of fibre length. The many physical properties peculiar to asbestos fibres should be well understood by the manufacturer. They may be briefly enumerated as follows: fibre strength, fibre composition, sliminess, length, harshness, softness, and filterability or porosity. This last named property is important and it is the purpose of this paper to present some basic studies on filtration as applied to production problems.

It has been shown that contacts between host rock and engineered barriers may be critical in the design of deep radioactive waste repositories. Water is expected to reach the interface zone after the re-saturation of the geological massive and its presence may lead to concrete leaching. Such a phenomenon could increase the interface transmissivity and compromise the confinement of radioactive waste. Recent experimental results from Buzzi et al. (2008) have enhanced how concrete leaching can drastically change the mechanical behaviour of such interfaces. Because of the local loss of strength resulting from leaching, shearing resulted in a degradation of the interface asperities. Similarly to rock joints, intact interfaces exhibit a usual contracting-dilating behaviour. On the contrary, depending on the extent of leaching, the degraded interface can display a fully contracting. This paper intends to investigate the influence of concrete leaching on the mechanical behaviour of host rock-concrete interfaces. The leaching process consists in the dissolution of some of the hydrates of the cement paste, leading to a reduction of the strength and Young's modulus. A discrete model has been developed with PFC3D where a simplified interface morphology has been introduced using a saw-tooth description of the asperities.

"The Bernie Lake pegmatite near Lac Du Bonnet in southern Manitoba is a complexly zoned pegmatite containing several lithium-bearing units in addition to the western world's largest known reserve of cesium. The pegmatite forms a flat-lying ellipsoidal body within an east-west-trending Precambrian amphibolite. The pegmatite enclosed by this vertically schistose amphibolite lies near the eastern tip of a granitic intrusive. The relationship of this intrusive to the pegmatite is obscured by Bernie lake. To date, the pegmatite body has been delineated aver an area of approximately 80 acres; it attains a maximum thickness of 280 feet. Several distinct zones, including three assemblages of economic importance, comprise the pegmatite itself. The combined spodumene and lepidolite assemblages provide a recoverable defined lithium ore reserve of almost 5 million tons averaging more than 2 per cent lithium oxide. The recoverable cesium ore of the pollucite assemblage provides 300,000 tons averaging more than 20 per cent cesium oxide; this represents more than half of the western world's pollucite reserve. The Bernie Lake pegmatite deposit, owned by Chemalloy Minerals Limited, is well located with respect to the growing United States markets, and its reserves of cesium are large enough to enable it, under favourable economic circumstances, to become the major producer of this metal in North America."

Introduction Numerous papers have been written dealing with the construction and functions of, and the environmental conditions created by, Diesel locomotives. Therefore, it is not my intention to attempt to deal with these phases of Diesel transportation other than to make reference to them in ?relation to and in connection with actual operation. The rapid expansion of industry during recent years and the necessity of products being made available at competitive prices in home and world markets has made the demand for cheaper coal a very serious factor for the coal industry. This condition has meant each coal producing country looking into ways and means whereby greater productivity and reduction in cost could he achieved. Surveys made show that, in addition to face mechanization, savings, in some cases substantial, can be made in transportation. Ventilation The most efficient mines are in-variably the well ventilated ones, for it is true that, where there is good ventilation, there are usually good roads. These combined factors are very essential where Diesel locomotives are used. Good roadways and track allow speed, and good ventilation dilutes rapidly any disagreeable exhaust gases. Locomotive Development In the older types of auxiliary rope haulage, coal hauled per haul-age hand is usually very low.

For a long period of time, the Chinese Government has been attaching great importance to and supporting the rapid development of the coal industry. Particularly since more than 30 years ago, when China introduced the Reform and Opening-up policy, the reform and development of the Chinese coal industry has witnessed world-recognized achievements. National coal production increased from 618 million tonnes in 1978 to 3.52 billion tonnes in 2011. While China?s coal production accounts for 49.5% of the world?s total, its annual production growth contributes to over 80% of global production growth. China is a country utilizing coal as its main source of energy. As the Chinese Government gives support to the rapid development of new and renewable energy sources, as well as to increased coal utilization efficiency, the ratio of coal in the primary energy consumption mix will gradually decline. However, for a long period of time to come, the total volume of coal demand will keep rising modestly. The Chinese Government has been highly committed to and actively promoting the overall, coordinated and sustainable development model, which puts people first. It has put forward a strategic task to build an ecological civilization, and highlighted its resolve to uphold the basic national policy of resource conservation and environmental protection, with a view to the pursuit of sustainable development. China will incorporate its response to climate change into the national economic and social development program, and take effective measures to lower CO2 emissions 40?45% per unit of GDP in 2020 compared to 2005. At the same time, China will increase the ratio of non-fossil fuels to 15% in the primary energy consumption mix. All of the above factors have raised requirements for the Chinese coal industry, with implications for clear directions, plans and goals for the development of the coal industry.

"The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."

"Simulation can serve as a convenient tool in studying the behaviour and performance of grinding circuits by facilitating the evaluation of various scenarios and identification of optimum operating conditions. This technique was applied to the St Andrew Goldfields Ltd.’s Stock Mine Mill which is a 1300 tpd gold milling facility, offering custom milling services as well as processing the Company’s own ores. Lack of adequate instrumentation in the mill poses a challenge in attaining optimum performance especially with changing ore types and characteristics. The grinding process is monitored essentially by manual measurement and adjustment of pulp densities at various streams. A simulation program was designed to assist in the effective implementation of this mode of grinding control. Product sizes from both the primary and secondary grinding circuits were correlated empirically to relevant process variables using a database formed from the results of past sampling campaigns. The simulator was created in Microsoft Excel whose data analysis and optimization tools coupled with its Visual Basic Programming capabilities were found to provide an excellent environment for the development of a cost-effective, efficient and user-friendly simulation program.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is often a very costly unit process in milling operations, mainly due to the excessive energy consumption associated with it. For example, for a Canadian copper-zinc flotation mill, grinding was listed as being the most costly item taking up 30.4% of the total milling expenses, followed by the flotation cost at 2 1 .O% (Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., 1982). A survey on 45 copper flotation mills around the world showed the average grinding cost to be 34.5% of the total milling cost (Weiss, 1985).Overgrinding aggravates the cost issue, while insufficient grinding either causes loss of valuable minerals to tails or results in low-grade concentrates. Therefore, it is essential that grinding circuits be carefully controlled and monitored. To this end, a great deal of effort has been devoted over the years to the modelling and simulation of grinding systems in order to assist in the efficient running of these processes."

"The concept of using chemical methods in prospecting dates back at least to the middle of the 16th century. Modern methods of geochemical prospecting, however, based on secondary haloes and utilizing trace-element techniques, were first practised in the U.S.S.R. and the Scandinavian countries in the 1930's. After 1945, methods based on soils, stream sediments and vegetation were rapidly developed in the U.S.A., the United Kingdom, Canada, France and other countries.The modern methods of geochemical prospecting owe their rapid development in the 20th century to the following:1.-Recognition of the primary and secondary dispersion haloes and trains that are associated with all mineral deposits. 2.-Development of accurate and rapid analytical methods utilizing the spectrograph and the various specific sensitive colorimetrie reagents, especially dithizone. 3.-Development of polyethylene laboratory ware of all types and the development of resins. This permitted greater freedom of field analyses and reduced the incidence of contamination.4.-Development of gas chromatography. This permitted the rapid and accurate determination of hydrocarbons in petroleum prospecting.Future research in geochemical prospecting should be focused on the following tasks: 1.-Definition of geochemical provinces and their relation to mineral deposits. 2.-Development of methods for discovering large low-grade deposits. 3.-Development of methods for discovering deeply buried deposits. 4.-Further development of methods to outline primary haloes. 5.-Eiucidation and formulation of techniques to relate the size and intensity of anomalies to the grade of the deposits. 6.-Development and refinement of biogeochemical methods, especially those based on indicator plants, chlorotic or toxic effects, and microbiological techniques. 7.-Definition of the types of primary and secondary haloes associated with accumulations of oil and gas."

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. "The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). Preceding the discovery and development of high grade pyrochlore deposits in North and South America, the majority of global niobium supply came from gravity concentration operations of columbite (Fe,Mn)Nb2O6, across Africa (Perrault and Manker, 1981)."
