The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. Thus far environmental groups remain unconvinced, and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This paper presents a fresh and cogent perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent material flow analysis that links coal’s impacts across a broad range of social and environmental aspects.

On the basis of field observation, four principal styles of hydraulic breccia are recognised, and their characteristic features noted. In practice, hybrid styles are most commonly encountered. Numerous examples will be illustrated during the oral presentation, and the potential for definition of a formative environment is emphasised. In one example presented, it is suggested that more than 50 episodes of hydraulic fracturing can be recognised. In all cases at least sane useful conclusions can be drawn in the context of modeling for drill targets.

High-purity Bi2O3 was prepared via extraction-preparation stripping method use BiCl3 leaching solution. Parameters such as oxalic acid concentration, phase ration, aging duration, feeding duration, were examined for their effect on the size and morphology of precipitate. The precipitate was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravity analysis (DSC-TGA) and infrared spectroscopy analysis (FT-IR). Bi2O3 was characterized by elements analysis, particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bi2O3 product of 680 nm was obtained using 15 g/L oxalic acid, 1/1 phase ration, 0 min aging duration, 0 min feeding duration and calcinating at 500 °C for 2 h.

Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

When a takeup weight is offset to the side of a conveyor, a wire rope is commonly routed from the takeup weight through a series of sheaves to the takeup carriage. The friction developed from a series of wire rope sheaves can effect the actual belt tension at the make up carriage. Through real-mime testing the actual tension on a makeup carriage was recorded with data acquisition using an internally strain-gauged turnbuckle. The wire rope used to transfer the makeup weight to the makeup carriage was routed through a series of lubricated bronzed bushed sheaves. The tension on the makeup carriage was found to be as much as 26% higher than the weight of the makeup due to the friction in the sheaves. A detailed discussion of the testing and results will be made.

At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Red mud of Indian origin contains around 55% plus of Fe2O3 and is considered as a hazardous waste for the alumina industry. For production of one tone of alumina employing the Bayer’s Process, around two tones of red mud is generated from three tones of Bauxite. Conventional process of steel making is not devoid of environmental pollution. In the present investigation, efforts have been made to produce steel from red mud by adopting reduction roasting, magnetic separation and hydrogen plasma smelting route. Magnetic fraction, containing enriched iron oxide and minimal content of alumina, is produced following the first two stages which is then subjected to hydrogen plasma smelting process for production of steel. This novel concept follows a green path way for production of steel free from pollution and is termed as green steel. Further, the only by-product that is produced in the process, is water, which is eco-friendly and recyclable.

"Nucleation and growth mechanism of iron crystal grain in coal-based shaft furnace direct reduction process by microwave heating were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and EDX. The results indicate that microwave has selectivity on various minerals which absorb microwaves. The high temperature in certain area of pellets and thermal stress on the interface of minerals are formed, results in the wustite grain smashed along the joints, and iron crystal grains turned out a spherical shape obviously. The iron crystal nucleus is formed firstly at the edge of wustite, on the interface between grains and in the holes in pellets, and grows gradually while reduction carries on from surface layer to inner core. Microwave heating promotes the rate of transportation and accumulation of the iron crystal grain, increases growth rate of iron crystal grain and contributes to formation of dense iron-jointed crystal texture eventually.IntroductionMicrowave energy as a new energy, which selectively heating materials through internal energy dissipation, has the advantages of heating uniformity, high thermal efficiency, fast heating, clean and pollution-free compared to conventional heating motheds. Microwave energy also has obvious superiority in increasing productivity. Thus, it has been widely used in many areas, including electronics, food processing, chemical, medicine, environmental protection, and family life etc [1]. As a rapidly developed green metallurgical method, microwave heating also has been widely recognized by areas of grinding, pretreatment, pre-reduction, drying, furnacing, metal extraction, and waste materials processing and utilization. Some research achievements are gradually putting into practice, showing great potential in chemical and metallurgical industry [2-3]."

Igarape Bahia Mine, which is currently the largest gold producer in Brazil, belongs to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and is situated 250 miles south of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. It came into operation in 1992 with the startup of the CIP plant, fed with high grade ore, presently at 3.4gAu/t. The ore is totally oxidized, containing extremely fine particles of free gold. The ore is soft and low cyanide consumer, with a maximum work index of 12kwh/sht. In 1993 a Heap Leaching Plant was set into operation, handling low grade ore of · 1.s g Ault. The Heap Leaching Plant has undergone two major expansions. In 1994 its capacity was raised from lMtpy to 2,2Mtpy and in 1998, with a thorough remodeling of crushing operations, it was raised again to 3.5Mtpy. The CIP plant, which was originally designed with a capacity for l. lMtpy of ore, was expanded to a 2.2Mtpy capacity in 1994. Presently, the CIP plant accounts for most of Igarape Bahia's total gold output, with approximately 220,000oz per year. Igarape Bahia's annual output is around 360.000 oz. Over the last three years, work has been intensified to improve performance of both processes, aiming at maximizing productivity of the two industrial plants. Reduced costs and increased revenues have been given a special emphasis in the unified improvement program. Cost · reduction has involved developing methodologies to rationalize consumption of materials and inputs, while increased productivity has been given top priority as a means of generating increasing revenues. Thus, all of the improvement and development efforts have had a common goal: to increase operating income.

The American Society for Testing Materials4 has recommended that the melting temperature of potassium chromate be used-for indicating the temperature to which a coal sample should be heated in the standard method of analysis to determine its volatile matter content. The specified temperature is 950± 20° C., the melting point of potassium chromate being noted as 940° C. Le Chatelier5 originally found the melting point to be 975°; later6 he found 9400. According to Shemtschushny7 the melting point is 984°; he also found a transition at 679°. Groschuff8 found the melting point to be 971° and the transition temperature 679°. Amadori9 reports a melting point of 9.78° and a transition point of 666°. The International Critical Tables10 take the melting point as 975°, which is estimated to be correct to two significant figures. In view of the apparent uncertainty existing, it has been though worthwhile to make a careful redetermination of this datum. It is of interest not only to determine the melting point of the pure salt, but also of the commercial product, in order to test its suitability for use as a temperature indicator. "Fluorspar mining in the St. Lawrence area of Newfoundland and Labrador began in the 1930s and ended in the mid-1980s. In 2013, Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc (CFI) discovered a new ore body, the AGS vein, which proved amenable to more economic open pit mining methods and began developing this resource. This paper discusses the flowsheet development of the AGS vein deposit. Testing at SGS began in 2009 with samples from other deposits in the area. The testwork included pilot-scale dense medium separation (DMS), laboratory-scale flotation tests to develop the flowsheet and a flotation pilot plant. The more recent work that is presented here has been devoted to the AGS vein, and included a variability testing program that gave tremendous insight into the metallurgical drivers of processing the deposit. The ore was found to be fairly variable in terms of fluorite grade, but also gangue mineralogy, which had greater implications on the DMS performance. The gangue mineralogy was also found to significantly impact the grindability characteristics of the DMS product. This paper will detail the testing conducted and the mitigating steps which were identified for the operation.INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the industrial trade name for the mineral fluorite (CaF2), which is the primary industrial source of fluoride. There are a number of categories of fluorspar, most notably acid-grade fluorspar and metallurgical fluorspar (metspar). Acid-grade fluorspar has stringent specifications and is suitable for the production of hydrofluoric acid that is used for many applications. The typical specifications of acid-grade fluorspar are >97% CaF2 and less than 1% each of SiO2 and CaCO3, with a particle size distribution in the order of 80% passing 100 µm. Metspar is typically used for metallurgical purposes, typically as a flux in smelting, and has significantly more relaxed specifications (< 15% SiO2). The principle source of fluorspar in Canada has been from the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. More than 3 million tonnes of fluorspar were produced there between 1940 and 1978 and from 1987 to 1990, when production ceased (Fulton & Montgomery, 1994)."

IT has been suggested that: "Insofar as the hardening due to a solute depends upon the increase of lattice parameter produced by it, it is reasonable to suppose that this hardening might be related to the resistance which the pure solvent would offer to increase in its parameter."&apos; It was further suggested that this hypothesis might be examined by comparing the hardnesses of analogous silver and copper alloys, since the stress necessary to produce a given lattice expansion is quite different in the two metals. Suitable data2,3,4 are now available on these alloys, and we shall proceed to an examination of the hypothesis quoted above. Hardness, Lattice Parameter and Ionic Overlap Increase in ultimate Meyer hardness has been plotted against increase in lattice parameter in Figs. I and 2. It is believed that most of the values are accurate within the limits indicated by the rectangles. These data are also presented in Table I. Ultimate Meyer hardness, P u, is defined by the equation: where L = load, D = diametei of an impression having the same diameter as the testing ball, which in this case is 4 mm. Increase in lattice parameter is defined as the difference between the lattice parameter of the solid solution and that of the pure solvent. The curves in Figs. I and 2 are based on equal solute concentration and an equal degree of plastic deformation pro duced by the testing ball. Hardnesses are corrected to a constant grain size for copper and silver alloys, respectively, and these two grain sizes are approximately equal. Furthermore, all solutes are from the same period of the B subgroup of the periodic table as their solvent. The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east bank of Lingding Ocean. Its coastline is about 6 km long and the water depth near the shore is Favourable. Across the bay is the &apos; New Territories " of Hong Kong. The port is at a distance of 22-23 seamilesaway from center of Hong Kong and 80 seamiles to Huangpu Harbour of Guangzhou, its highway links with Shen-Guang Highay. Since 19 79 China Merchants Group of the Transportation Department, began to set up Shekou Industrial Zone, the port has been developing and flouri­shing in business. With 15 large or small berths in all, the present portline is 2600 m, and the annual cargo throughout is over 3,000,000 tons and the annual passenger traffic is about 2,000,000 persons. Equalling a medium-scale seaport, it has been officially approved as an oceangoing transit port by the ministry of Transportation. The construction of Shekou port is chara-terized by the self-collected funds and the short construction period. In view of this, the optional plan of the port structure must serve the requirements of simplicity in struture, economy in mate­rial and speed in construction. That accounts for the most application of the sheet piling type to the port in Shekou. Once the project was approved, the cons­truction started. Only within an average period of 7-8 months, a deep water pier was completed and put into operation, which covered series of processes from exploration, designing, tender for con­struction to completion.

Design and construction of deep foundations and basements is increasingly becoming more complex, as the density and frequency of urban development increases. This growth brings various associated challenges in the form of design considerations and construction challenges. This paper discusses some of the challenges routinely encountered as well as some specific complications in this area, based on author’s experience gained through exposure as specialist contractor (designer), consultant and specialist consultant, along with some information on how these challenges were overcome. The paper highlights some of the key aspects of design coordination and importance of having an awareness of the overall perspective. Examples will be used to illustrate practical problems and the approaches used to respond.

Exploration budgets are commonly determined by "rules of thumb" such as a percentage of earnings or other fiscal measure. An appropriate exploration budget is the amount needed to achieve the goals of the company. It can be determined by discounting the income expected from achieved goals. Budgets for individual projects are determined in a similar manner except that risk of failure is included in the computation.

During 1924 a number of lives were lost and other men incapacitated by the toxic effects of gases produced in blasting in massive sulphides. In one mine, three men working in a raise were caught by gases from blasting a drift round in massive sulphide on the level. The round in the drift was shot ahead of time and it was necessary for the three men to travel through the gases to the intake air course. Two of the men lost their lives, and the third was injured, apparently for life. Other men at this same mine have been caught in the gases at blasting time and seriously injured. At a second mine, the gases from blasting in sulphides appear to be very dangerous, and it was necessary to send a number of men who were caught in such gases to the hospital. One man who was seriously gassed has not recovered in over a year is time. Another man similarly gassed soon died of influenza.

In 2010, MSHA began holding hearings on a new coal mine respirable dust rule, which proposes a 1.0 mg/m3 standard, a separate 0.1 mg/m3 quartz standard, and the use of single-shift samples for compliance. Small mines largely comprise the ?hot spots? where dust diseases of the lungs increased dramatically over the past decade. This paper presents findings on the feasibility of small mines? compliance with the proposed new 1.0 mg/m3 standard. It gives probabilities of noncompliance by MSHA district, seam height, and selected ?hot spot? counties. Because silicosis and respirable quartz dust appear to be the primary issues related to a recent doubling of the prevalence of dust diseases of the lungs, multiple regression models for prediction of the average total quartz content of compliance samples are given. These findings have significant implications on the need for better dust control methods.

A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.
