"The use of microprocessors in metallurgy is currently increasing at a very fast rate. A large number of companies are offering systems ""off the shelf"" which are aimed at the data acquisition and process control market. There are two main drawbacks to these systems: first, they are usually quite expensive, and second, they are not completely compatible with the target metallurgical application. An alternative is to develop a microcomputer-based system "" in lab "".A dedicated microcomputer system has proved to be very useful in many metallurgical research applications(1,2)). However, in this system the analog input signals had to be transferred over long distances , and significant noise was introduced despite the use of shielded cables. In order to overcome this problem a network of low pass-filter s was designed and built. The usage of the abovementioned system brought the need to digitize the analog signals in-situ and transfer the digital signals, which are much less susceptible to noise over very long distances. This distinctly different design philosophy has become a reality with the evolution of microprocessor technology over the last few years. This design philosophy is utilized in this development."

Mobile electronic devices such as smart phones and tablets are a significant source of valuable metals that should be recycled. Value metals in phones are gold, palladium, silver, copper, cobalt and nickel. Devices now contain increasing amounts of rare earth elements (REE). Effective recycling schemes should include the recovery of these critical materials. Targeted recycling of items containing more of the less available critical materials could address their future criticality. This presentation will describe an electro-hydrometallurgy approach to efficient recycling of metals from scrap mobile electronics. The electrorecycling (ER) process generates oxidizing agents at an anode while reducing dissolved metals at the cathode. Development of the process involved generation of E vs pH diagrams, complemented with metals dissolution experiments used to assess the effectiveness of various solution chemistries. Although several schemes were envisioned, a two stage process has been the focus of work: 1) initial dissolution of Cu, Sn, Ag and magnet materials using Fe+3 generated in acidic sulfate and 2) final dissolution of Pd and Au using Cl2 generated in an HCl solution. Results from laboratory work will be discussed.

"With the Ontario Ministry of the Environment stipulating that the cumulative concentration of copper, lead, zinc and nickel in mine mill effluent must be no greater than 1.0 milligram per litre, it has become necessary for the mining industry of find some form of treatment for the removal of heavy metals from effluent waters.To comply with these guidelines, it became necessary for Mattabi Mines Ltd., which is situated 50 miles Northeast of Ignace in Northwestern Ontario, to develop a compact, cost effective and technically sound treatment process to remove heavy metals from their tailings overflow. A design committee consisting of mine metallurgists, environmental engineers, a Dutch research and development team and the equipment supplier engineering staff was set up to accomplish this.Using some new and innovative wastewater treatment equipment, the guidelines established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment can now be met. The sludge produced from the precipitated heavy metals is sent directly to the concentrator, thus eliminating the danger of re-dissolution of the metals in a landfill site, while recovering some of the valuable metals that would otherwise be wasted in a sludge landfill."

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters, presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimizing the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m benches through marginal analyses. The observations from these analyses disapprove the previous conflicting assertions that the over-all weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases directly with bench height. It is concluded that: (1) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open pit mines; (2) the reduction of haulage cost is much limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (3) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high bench.

The Phelps Dodge El Paso Rod Mill produces approximately 2.4 million pounds per day of copper rod from a casting and rolling operation. The newly formed rod is treated to remove mill scale and oxides using a sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution which is bled periodically when the copper concentration reaches 30-35 g/L. The bleed solution is heated to 75° C to destroy the residual peroxide. Copper is then recovered in a 270 cell EMEW electrowinning plant. Clean acid is also regenerated in the EMEW plant and is returned to the rod cleaning circuit. The EMEW plant commissioned in January 2006, has two operators and replaces a copper sulfate plant with fourteen operators. The EMEW plant has a capacity of 1700 kg/day of cathode copper at 2.1 kWh/kg copper deposited. The electrowinning plant operates in closed circuit with the rod mill returning up to 2600 kg/day of sulfuric acid resulting in zero discharge. Use of dimensionally stable anodes (DSA®) ensures that the acid quality is maintained in the closed loop operation. The operating conditions, performance and plant experience of the EMEW copper and acid recovery plant are discussed.

Al powder is used extensively as an antioxidant in carbon-containing bricks, but it cannot be used directly in water-based carbon-containing castables due to its hydration tendency. To overcome this problem, in this work, SiO2-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) inorganic-organic hybrid coatings have been prepared via sol-gel processing, and used to coat Al powder. The hydration behaviour of uncoated and coated Al powders has been investigated in water at 60 or 100°C for 36h by examining phase and microstructural changes. While significant hydration is detected in uncoated Al powder, no obvious hydration is detected in coated Al powder, indicating that its hydration resistance has been greatly improved. Oxidation resistance of graphite coexisting with uncoated or coated Al powder was also investigated in air at 1250°C for 1.5h. The oxidation ratio of graphite coexisting with coated Al powder was similar to that of graphite coexisting with uncoated Al powder, indicating that both powders showed similar antioxidising behaviour. This, along with the much improved hydration resistance, makes the coated Al powder a potential antioxidant in carbon-containing castables systems.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

"A large amount of platinum group metals (PGM) are used in automobile catalyst. It is important to recover the metals from wasted catalyst. Nomura and Kageyama (2013) suggested recovery process that PGM oxides were absorbed to perovskite-type oxide based on LaScO3. In their process, the PGM in wasted catalyst as absorbed to the perovskite-type oxide as PGM oxide. It has potential to each element in the process if the perovskite-type oxide is selected properly. In this study, the PGM oxide absorption properties of various perovskite-type oxides are investigated to develop a new recovery and separation process. The various perovskite-type oxide were synthesized with metallic platinum, palladium, rhodium at high temperature in air atmosphere. And the PGM contents in the perovskite-type oxide after the experiment are determined by chemical analysis. Some of them have the properties to absorb specific PGM oxide selectively. In addition, in order to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide and composition of the perovskite-type oxide experimental temperature was investigated. Then it is also found that doping another specific element to the perovskite-type oxide is effective to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide. Then a new recovery process of PGM from wasted automobile catalyst, in which PGM can be separate to each element, was designed.INTRODUCTIONA large amount of Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd), and Rhodium (Rh) are used in automobile catalysis (Figure 1) (Platinum, 2013). Natural supplies for these metals are limited and PGM mining can detrimental environmental impact. Therefore, the recycling of PGMs from wasted automobile catalysis is very important. The Rose process (Figure 2) was developed as a process to recover PGM from wasted automobile catalysis. In this process, the automobile catalysis is first crushed mechanically, and then extracting agent, copper (Cu), and flux are melted at high temperature. The mixture separates into a metal phase, (Cu alloy containing PGM) and slag. The PGM is enriched by oxidizing. Cu to Cu oxide. The PGM are then recovered and separated to each element in a wet process. However, it is hard to dissolve the PGM with acid because they are chemically stable and strong oxidation agent such as aqua regia is used. Moreover, to separate the PGM to each individual element, a solvent extraction process is required."

"The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonicmagmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonicallycontrolled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian platform, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu mineralization. It does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

"Evolution of the continental lithosphere over Earth’s 4.6 billion year history is one of the fundamental questions of geoscience. Much of the Earth’s present-day continental crust formed during the first 2 billion years, the Archean eon, of the planet’s lifetime and thus, Archean processes of lithospheric formation must be studied in order to address this question. Until recently, the processes of Archean lithospheric evolution were thought to be fundamentally different from present-day plate tectonic processes. However, subsequent evidence suggests that the growth of Archean continents may be explained in terms of modern tectonic accretionary tectonics similar to those presently operating in the southwest Pacific region. The evidence supporting this hypothesis was compiled largely by Canadian geoscientists working in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield in northwestern Ontario, over the past 15 years. Study of Archean rocks is also economically important because the Archean rocks of the world, although comprising only a relatively small fraction of the exposed continental crust, contain much of the world’s mineral wealth, including more than half of the world’s gold, as well as significant base metal reserves. Furthermore, the vast majority of primary economic diamond deposits are derived from the lithospheric roots beneath Archean cratons.The LITHOPROBE Western Superior Transect is located within the western part of the Superior Province in northwestern Ontario (Fig. 1). The Superior Province is the largest and best exposed Archean crustal block in the world and forms the nucleus of the North American continent. The internal structure of the Superior Province records a history of the processes that formed the earliest lithospheric elements of the Earth into cratons, thus providing an ideal laboratory for investigating early crustal evolution. The Western Superior Province is characterized by a regional pattern of alternating, 100 km to 200 km wide geological belts (Fig. 2). The observed geologic relationships between and within these subprovinces have been explained in terms of a modern tectonic model of terrane accretion. Oceanic floor, volcanic island arcs, oceanic sediments and continental fragments were accreted successively from north to south against the southern margin of a cratonic nucleus (North Caribou terrane, Fig. 2) which grew steadily in size with the arrival of new terranes through geologic time. If this model is correct, it suggests that the tectonic processes operating today have been active without major variation over the past 3 billion years."

Solvent extraction (SX) is a widely used method for the extraction of copper from pregnant leach solutions or other ionic solutions in hydrometallurgical applications. About 17% of total refined copper production worldwide is produced using SX followed by electrowinning (EW). Conventional SX units, such as mixer-settlers, consume a large amount of extractant, offer poor process control and yield low extraction efficiency. Extraction efficiency is poor due to low specific interface area, crud formation, emulsification, and slow phase separation stage. Micro solvent extraction (micro-SX) is a rapidly developing technology that provides an opportunity for improved process control, higher extraction efficiency, lower residence time and, as such, has a potential to reduce the environmental footprint of SX operation. In this research, extraction of copper ions in an acetate buffer media is investigated using D2EHPA with kerosene as a diluent. Chemical factors such as extractant concentration and ionic concentration of aqueous phase are varied to determine the optimum conditions. Subsequently, the extraction efficiency and reaction time of new micro-SX reactors are compared against previous bulk SX studies. Extraction in the microfluidic reactor was observed to be faster with a residence time more than an order of magnitude lesser than bulk SX. This study forms a prelude for developing new modular micro-SX units which will enable continuous, effective, and safe operation on a large scale. In future studies, numerical and analytical models validated through this work will help eliminate rigorous experimentation and enable faster design and fabrication of micro-SX units. INTRODUCTION Conventional industrial solvent extraction (SX) units such as mixer-settlers, extraction columns present various disadvantages. Low specific interfacial area, crud formation, and emulsification in industrial reactors lead to long extraction times and severely hamper extraction efficiency (Priest et al., 2011; Chen et al., 2017). Microfluidic extraction considerably improves upon the current extraction practices by (1) creating a large surface to volume ratio that enables rapid mass transfer across the interface, (2) better process control, and (3) easier separation of phases (Kashid, Renken, & Kiwi-Minsker, 2011; Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014). These factors establish micro-SX as a crucial mode for process intensification. Although, a micro SX unit has significantly low processing volume than conventional extraction methods, their throughput can be increased via massive parallelisation (‘numbering up’), which is an area of active research (Darekar, Singh, Mukhopadhyay, & Shenoy, 2016a; Kriel, Woollam, Gordon, Grant, & Priest, 2016).

"IntroductionREEFS of Silurian age are recognized in southwestern Ontario, both in outcrop and from subsurface information. This paper deals with the so-called 'pinnacle' reefs which are known only in the subsurface. For the purpose of this paper, the pinnacle reefs are arbitrarily defined as those structures having a height of over 250 feet and a length of less than two miles. This definition eliminates numerous mounds and other broader, more subdued, structures of less certain origin, found in subsurface beds.The term 'pinnacle reef' is perhaps unfortunate, but it is in common usage in Ontario and is used elsewhere for different types of reefs. A new name is justified by the unusual environment and structure of the Ontario reefs, but it is unlikely that any other term would gain acceptance. Rather than propose a new term which would be ignored or result in further confusion and misuse, the name 'pinnacle', as defined above, is used in this paper.Pinnacle reefs have been found over a fairly large part of southwestern Ontario. The known reefs of this type parallel the southeast edge of lake Huron and •follow the strike of the structure contours which circle the Michigan basin (see Figure 1). In total, twenty-five such reefs have been discovered in southwestern Ontario."

Le but principal de cette étude était de vérifier certaines hypothèses de nature minéralogique susceptibles d'expliquer en tout ou en partie les variations importantes observées au concentrateur no 1 de Mines Gaspé quant aux performances du circuit B de broyage et de flottation. A cette fin, nous avons examiné six séries d'échantillons prélevés lors d'une campagne de mesures effectuée au cours de l'été 1980. Ainsi, la capacité du circuit de broyage semble dépendre principalement devariation s dans les caractéristiques minéralogiqu es et texturales du minerai, par exemple du rapport grenat/quartz, le grenat ayant une influence néfaste sur le rendement de cette étape, contrairement au quartz . Quant au processus de concentration, la fraction du cuivre sous f orme de minéraux difficilement récupérés par flottation, en particulier des carbonates de cuivre, varie de façon significative dans le minerai, et cela peut certes expliquer en partie des récupérations parfois plus basses. Malgré ces variations important es de la composition minéralogique globale du minerai et de sa broyabilité, le degréde libération des sulfures de cuivre dans le produit de broyage dépend presque seulement de la granulométrie de ce produit. Afin de garantir des performances égales à l'étape de concentration, il est fortement suggéré de contrôler cette granulométrie à un niveau constant.

"New permanent magnetic alloys have recently opened up possibilities for development of unique mineral separators. These are now making several new applications feasible. In many cases where conventional electromagnetic-induced roll separators have traditionally been used, the new permanent magnetic roll separators may reduce both over-all capital costs and operation costs.The development of the next generation of extremely powerful permanent magnets, i.e. neodymium-iron alloys, is progressing rapidly and will affect the roll separator as well as another type of magnetic separator. Permanent Magnet Roll SeparatorDesign and FeaturesDiscs of permanent magnets interleaved with soft iron discs constitute the basic magnetic roll design (Fig. I). By enveloping the magnetic roll with a thin abrasive resistant belt (Fig. 2), even highly magnetic particles are removed.The first prototype roll utilizing the new magnets was shown to have approximately equal strength as induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators. Since the initial test roll, the new separator, called the PERMROLL® , has been made twice as strong with regard to magnetic force, that is, the magnetic flux density is determined to exceed 1.7 tesla (17 kilogauss), while the magnetic field gradient is more than twice the gradient than can be practically achieved with IMR."

"Three methods were tested for the beneficiation of aluminum scrap, generated by heavy medium separation of non-ferrous automobile scrap residue. These were: crushing in a shredder followed by screening; grinding in a ball miff followed by screening; and eddy current separation. The best results were obtained with the grinding-screening method. IntroductionThe usual method of aluminum alloy reclamation from non-ferrous automobile scrap residue consists of a two-step heavy medium separation to remove materials lighter than and heavier than aluminum. The resulting aluminum scrap still contains over 15% impurities such as stones and glass, heavy rubber, insulated copper wire , plastics and heavy metals entrapped by macerated aluminum piece s, composite fragments, etc.(2). Upon melting, these impurities create difficulties and yield a low ingot recovery-65% to 70%, hence small foundries avoid this material.There are a number of ways to improve the quality of aluminum scrap such as:(1 ) crushing of the scrap, which powders the brittle content , a major impurity component, followed by screening out of the dust(2) eddy current separation , which removes metals from the material flow, and(3) implement better methods for density separation.The eddy current separation and two variants of the comminution-screening technique were studied by Intermetco Ltd., Hamilton , Ontario."

The Serra Verde Project is located in the northern part of Goiás state, Brazil, and comprises 49 mineral claims covering an area of 69,814 ha. The Serra Verde deposit is a rare earth element (REE) enriched weathered granite comparable to the weathered granite, or ionic-clay, deposits found in southeastern China. The Mineral Reserves of the Serra Verde Project total 388 Mt (Measured and Indicated) at an average grade of 1,484 ppm of REE oxide (REO). Several hundred agitated leach and column leach tests have confirmed recovery of about 40 to 55% of the REE, except for Ce, using simple desorption techniques. Present plans call for a heap leach operation followed by precipitation of impurities and precipitation of a pure REE carbonate suitable for refining and separation. The project plan includes initial production of 5,000 t/a of REO, with a high content of heavy and critical REO, rising to 10,000 t/a of REO. This production rate will be obtained by mining of the Mineral Reserves over a 22-year mine life at an initial rate of 6 Mt/a for the first four years with the mining rate thereafter increasing as required by grade and production targets.

In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the writer visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the USA, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included. The report that resulted included, among other sections; (1) the history of wire rope and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements as regards safety factors; (4) a review of the players and the inspection practices; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) a look into the future to outline the developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; (7) recommendations. Subsequently, the report was issued as a book by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by the Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Natural Resources Canada. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study.

Talc is used as a gelating, diluting, antimould and softening agent in the pharmaceutical industries. This article reviews efforts made for producing pharmaceutical grade talc from a mine located in the west of Iran, called Masoud Abad. Reaching to the pharmaceutical standards, was the principal goal of the talc beneficiation. Methods such as flotation and leaching were applied to eliminate the impurities. Considering to the negligible Fe content of the ore, the major impurity was calcium carbonate and to some extent dolomite. Depressants used in froth flotation were dextrine, quebraco and sodium silicate. Variation of collectors such as oil petroleum, paraffin, stearic acid were also used. After optimization of the effective parameters, followed by two stages of flotation (rougher and cleaner) acid leaching process was also applied as a complementary step to remove the impurities. CaO impurities in the sample was 11.63% which reduced to 1.03% after two stages of flotation, and finally reached to 0.03% CaO by leaching process. This figure is more lower than the world pharmaceutical standards (i.e. <0.6 % CaO). The highest recovery was 55% at the best conditions. New Gold?s New Afton mine is an 11,000 tonne per day block caving mine, located 8 km west of the city of Kamloops, British Columbia. The reserve is estimated at 52.5Mt with grades of 0.65 g/t Au and 0.93% Cu. Block caving requires a considerable amount of infrastructure development before production can begin. Each excavation had its own challenges, often further complicated by interactions with the caving stresses and fault structures. The main areas of interest were: the production crusher complex, the surface to underground infrastructure, and the footprint interaction with the faults. The ore zone at New Afton is bounded by two very weak fault zones, with large fault affected areas and associated splays. The resulting rock mass rating (RMR) is 35-50, with some areas significantly weaker due to clay infill. These conditions created a unique and decidedly difficult environment in which to develop New Afton?s infrastructure. Despite these difficulties, the mine began production on schedule in July 2012. The main production crusher for the mine is a gyratory crusher that allows for direct truck dumping, with a smaller jaw crusher in series to facilitate the initial development and production. The crusher chamber was redesigned several times to minimize the chamber volume, resulting in a 40% decrease in volume without losing functionality. After drilling and geotechnical testing, the location of the crusher was changed to eliminate the threat of fault affected ground in the area; the entire complex moved a short time before mining began on the chamber. The mining techniques used enabled tight control of the crusher pocket excavation, while also allowing for the timely completion of the chamber. The locations of the surface to underground infrastructure were tightly constrained by geology, surface infrastructure, and an existing open pit. The VR5 raise was drilled and abandoned part way through the reaming process when the drill string became stuck in fault gouge material. It was relocated and successfully completed. The VR7 raise hit a region of poor rock strength and deviated more than 11 m. Poor ground conditions caused a 130m section of the raise walls to fail. An innovative rehabilitation program was undertaken to re-establish the raise for ventilation. A surface to underground slick line was also installed to ease the material movement underground. A layout of the Extraction level was changed from herring bone to straight through drawpoints that resulted in a net reduction of 1.3 km of development. The Apex level was added to aid in the breakage over the major apex pillar and allow for geological mapping. A portion of the caving footprint is located within the footwall fault. The low strength, high clay content, and small joint spacing of the material resulted in blast-hole cut-off and drift deformation. Drift rehabilitation was a key factor in the successful development of the cave footprint. Innovative drilling and loading techniques were used to keep the holes open and to impede movement along the joint structures.

"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates.
