"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. has recently developed the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine 55km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797000oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run of mine ore. 1996 highlights included construction of 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1.46 gpt on to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon where winter site temperatures routinely reach -45 C for extended periods.IntroductionFollowing a comprehensive governmental and public review of the proposed project, a Class A Yukon Water license was issued in August, 1995. Construction started in 1995 and leaching commenced in October 1996. The Brewery Creek Mine is in Yukon, the home of the Klondike Gold Rush nearly 100 years ago. This is the only part of Canada not glaciated in the Wisconsin advance so there is oxide ore resulting from about 80,000 years of weathering -unique in Canada. Discontinuous permafrost is present on site and has required special consideration in the design. Winter temperatures dip below minus 50 C, demanding an approach to mining and leaching that is different than in more temperate climates.Project DescriptionThe mine comprises 8 shallow, largely oxidized gold deposits along a 7km corridor. An 8 year mining program will extract 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797,000 oz) of gold. The strip ratio will be 1.35: 1. Overall gold recovery is projected at 78%. There will be 2.3 million tonnes of ore placed on the pad annually, with an average of 2.57 tonnes (83, 000 oz) of gold recovered per year. Because of the cold winters, the mine will operate approximately 210 days per year, while the leaching process will operate on a year round basis. Run of mine ore is placed on the heap 150 days per year. The recovery process utilizes conventional sodium cyanide leaching , carbon adsorption, caustic desorption, and on-site smelting. Peak employment during mining is 145 and winter staff is reduced to 45."

In historic mining practice, typical thin liner support systems have been considered to comprise non-reinforced or mesh-reinforced shocrete linings. In the early 1990?s, development of alternate forms of liner systems was initiated in Canada which is now undergoing significant international growth in countries which sustain major mining activity. Now internationally designated as thin, spray-on liner systems, a wide spectrum of liner materials, ranging from liquid/liquid to liquid/solid component combinations, has become commercially available. This innovative family of products is characteristically identified as being rapidly deployable, capable of creating ultra-fast setting coverage over rock surfaces, and able to develop tenacious adhesion and pull strength capacities for resisting rock falls and movements. This paper presents a summary of current liner developments and use in principal mining districts world wide. Additionally, a database of material properties for principal product types used in mining and a review of common quality control testing procedures under development are provided. Such information is based upon recent Canadian and international efforts being taken to assess and develop user standards for the implementation of thin, spray-on liners as rock support in mines. This work is intended to continue for a period of years, with the eventual goal being to establish support and installation guidelines for mines based on quantifiable laboratory and field research.

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. "Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. The recovery from the early flotation cells are a true measurement of how well a flotation chemical is performing. Backfilling has become an integral process in underground mining operations, with varying cost-effective forms of application. This study is a part of an overall investigation into the backfill practices at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM). The mine is well-diversified in terms of backfill methodologies and practices. The mine employs different fill methods such as cemented and un-cemented rock fill, slag fill, and cemented hydraulic fill (or a combination of them) in order to fill the voids created by mining activities. The history of backfilling at CCNM has been dominated by cemented and un-cemented slag fill. Each fill method requires operating and engineering guidelines for a cost effective quality control system. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the backfill methods and applications, operating guidelines, and engineering requirements at CCNM.

"The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected milling conditions of calcium carbonate. A variety of grinding media material and bead sizes, along with 2 different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data was used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of increasing energy costs and raw material prices it is important to look at the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Wet grinding and ultrafine wet grinding in stirred media mills are now a possible cost-effective production step for the processing of industrial minerals and precious metals. The generation of smaller particle sizes (down to micrometer scale) can be advantageous for further production steps – i.e. better liberation of precious metals or improved industrial mineral qualities.In the following, the wet grinding process is investigated under different milling conditions of calcium carbonate. Different grinding media materials varying in specific weight, bead size and stirrer tip speeds are used to determine optimal energy consumption for the milling process.DESCRIPTION OF TEST CONDITIONS AND PARAMETERSMill ParametersTests were performed in a Drais Laboratory Perl Mill PML H/V with an installed electrical motor power of 3 kW. The mill chamber is silicon carbide where as the stirrer and discs are made of yttria stabilised zirconia. The mill working volume is 0.9 l. A screen cartridge with a screen size of 0.2 mm is used to separate the beads and slurry at the outlet of the mill. All tests were performed with a grinding media filling grade of 80% (Mill working volume). The stirrer tip speed was set at 6 m/s and 10 m/s."

"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. "Intensive mechanization and automation in the LKAB, Kiruna Mine in Sweden have resulted in substantial rise in productivity and decrease in production cost. Capital investment in a modern mine today averages a considerable amount per miner and costs increase with requirements for more efficient methods and equipment. Equipment reliability becomes more and more important. Equipment maintenance requirements are directly proportional to equipment reliability and grade of availability. Weaknesses in the equipment result in unnecessary costs with regard to maintenance which can add up considerably per year, but of more importance are the costs caused by equipment breakdown. These breakdowns disturb or interrupt the production and often cause damage to other parts of the system. This paper discusses the important parameters involved in mine car wheel wear and the design principles of wheels, axle suspension and track.IntroductionTrains operating in an underground mine do not follow the same standard of performance as trains operating on surface railways. The differences in speed, curve radius and environment require different methods of calculation for underground train systems, and when judging the parameters involved one must keep in mind these differences at all times.While surface railway technology was given all possible attention over the last century no one was seriously looking into underground rail haulage in the sense of rail vehicles performance on the track until LKAB in 1975 started to question the methods of calculations used. Even though LKAB by then attained mine car maintenance cost that was 1/6 to 1/10 of other mining companies they were not pleased with the situation. The objective for the ensuing engineering work was to derive the reasons for wear and breakdowns. Once those reasons were established, the design of a completely new generation of mine cars could start. The result of these efforts were beyond all expectations. The maintenance cost on mine cars had been reduced to 1/15 of prior car generation which already had comparatively low cost.The most significant cost savings were made on wheel maintenance, which earlier represented 50% to 55% of car maintenance. Wheel life was increased from an average of 3 to 30 years or more.The LKAB theories around wheel wear are described in the following report."

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

"This paper presents results of a study undertaken to determinethe feasibility of mining plains overburdens with bucket wheel excavators. Based on extensive geotechnical testing of overburdens under study, the relations between material geotechnical properties and its cuttability were defined. The properties with the highest correlations to the cuttability werethen used to develop the material diggability classification. This classification may be used for identification of overburdens and coals mineable by bucket wheel excavators.IntroductionLow cost of mining and high productivity can be achieved when mining unconsolidated soils and soft rocks with bucket wheel excavators. As a result this mining equipment will likely be introduced into plains coal mines. At present there are plans to use a bucketwheel excavator (BWE) in at least one mine by the end of this decade. Unfortunately, the performance of a BWE deteriorates rapidly with the increasing strength of mined material. To avoid costly misapplication, material diggability must be defined in advance of an application (i.e. the force required at the cutting edges of BWE buckets must be quantified). Correct definition of material diggability permits reliable selection of a BWE, or may indicate unsuitability of this equipment for a particular application.The reported studyu i was undertaken to investigate the diggability of typical prairie overburdens and thus provide a guidance for likely future applications of bucketwheel equipment. Investigations concentrated on the parts of overburden most likely to create problems for a BWE mining. These are defined in Table 1. At present, thin layers of the two investigated materials (samples K and L) are mined by a BWE in an oil sand mine, after being loosened by blasting."

The Sarcheshmeh copper deposit contains 1 billion tones of ore averaging 0.7% copper and 0.025% molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and currently processes 41,000t/d. Molybdenite as a by-product is recovered in two separate stages. First, a bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is produced and in the second stage these two are separated. The recovery of molybdenite in the first and second stages is 65% and 85-90%, respectively. The yearly production of molybdenite concentrate varies between 3500 and 4000 t. Sodium sulphide is used as the depressant of the copper and iron bearing minerals which due to a rather high consumption (17.7 kg/t) constitutes one of the major cost items of the plant (i.e., 58% of total reagents cost). A detailed laboratory scale study showed that replacing air with nitrogen could reduce the consumption of sodium sulphide (i.e., H2S or mineral origin). Nitrogen for the plant was supplied from an oxygen plant used for the smelter through a 1400 m long pipeline. The existence of the oxygen plant at the Sarcheshmeh complex was a key factor in the implementation and success of this project. After using nitrogen in the plant for a period of twenty one months, the consumption of sodium sulphide was reduced from 17.7 to 14.2 kg/t at constant metallurgy. The reduction was lower than expected which was mainly due to the type of sodium sulphide used and the lack of any automatic instrument to control the depressant (sodium sulphide) dosage. The latter in turn caused the operators to overuse sodium sulphide in order to reach and maintain the target metallurgy (i.e., higher molybdenite recovery along with lower copper content of the concentrate).

Albian Sands Energy is scheduled to begin production at its oilsands operations in the fall of 2002. Start-up includes the selection and implementation of over 75 IT systems or computer applications. These include engineering applications, systems required to control mining activities, maintenance, the processing plant and utilities, and also systems required to run the company, such as human resources, finances and inventory/warehousing. This paper outlines the processes used for the selection, implementation and integration of these systems in order to optimize the use of information and to meet the technical, business and IT requirements of the company. The first step in Albian?s approach to identifying system requirements is the development of a Business Activity Model, outlining all tasks involved in running the operations. The computer applications required to accomplish each task are then identified by having the IT team work closely with each technical and business unit. Historically, at some companies, the selection of systems has been lead by the IT team or by consultants, with little input from the technical or business units. Typically, this results in products that don?t meet the company?s expectations. To ensure a more positive outcome, Albian believes that it is imperative that the company?s technical and business people are closely involved in the selection process. Integration of the IT systems is also key, including linking all applications through a Data Warehouse and EDMS. Over 120 required integrations have been identified. This ensures the storage of all data in only one location, data security, and easy data and document retrieval for all requirements throughout the company.

About 80 years ago the mining industry saw an advertisement of a machine manufacturer: ?One man ? one machine?, meaning the productivity gain by using a pneumatic rock drill instead of manual tools. Mechanization in mining had started. In the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s when mechanization progressed the word could be transformed into the meaning of ?one man ? one drill rig?. During the 80&apos;s automatic functions were added to the machines. Automation started. In the 90&apos;s, the first autonomous machines were seen, transforming the advertisement from the 1920&apos;s into ?one man ? multiple machines? operated from a remote control room. Soon, the productivity gain achieved by pure automation will also be flating out meaning that the margin cost of further productivity gain will be inefficiently high. What next? In mining operations there is still a high potential of unused productivity lost by ?trivial? things like organization, logistics and operational management. Changing the focus from mechanization and automation towards optimizing the overall mining process will unleash another big potential for cost cuttings and for enhancing efficiency of production. Optimizing an overall process is a task of much higher total complexity compared to an isolated machine automation focus. And a successful process integration requires the collaboration of machine vendors, infrastructure suppliers, IT services and the mine itself. It requires a number of of important preconditions to be fulfilled: ? Integrated IT systems with seamless interfaces between all components and peripherals involved ? Real time information access in all locations ? Real time overview of all operational aspects A crucial aspect for all of these issues is a seamless communication both above and also under ground and IT interfaces which are easy and price efficient to implement. This paper highlights ways to achieve productivity gains by process optimization. It also discusses needs for industry wide activities in order to enable cost efficient performance of mine process optimization projects.

We document the occurrence, mineralogy and firing properties of magnesite from hydrothermal deposits in the upper Cretaceous ophiolites of Eastern Iran. These deposits occur as thin veins of nearly pure cryptocrystalline magnesite with only trace amounts of quartz, calcite, and dolomite. Ratios of CaO/SiO2 in the bulk ore are variable. The composition of dead-burned magnesite from these deposits, calcined at different temperatures and durations, is predictable from phase equilibria. Textures of the calcined magnesite were studied by SEM; results show that the principal impurites produced during calcination are forsterite, monticellite, merwinite, dicalcium and tricalcium silicates, and that these are located principally at triple junctions of the periclase crystals. The size of periclase crystals increased with temperature and duration of calcination and the amount of periclase-periclase grain contacts was reduced by increasing the concentration of impurities in the starting products. EPMA show: 1) that CaO and FeO contents in periclase increase steadily with an increase in the CaO/SiO2 ratio and the FeO content of the bulk ore, respectively, and 2) that limited solid solution exists between impurites. This study demonstrates that high quality dead-burned magnesia refractories can be produced from the Iranian magnesite with low CaO, SiO2 and FeO contents.
