"With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.IntroductionOne of the biggest challenges facing the aging infrastructure is the materials loss and deterioration due to corrosion. Many studies indicate that in the US alone, costs due to corrosion loss is more than $276 billion annually (Michiel et al., 2010). Corrosion is the major cause of deterioration of steel structures and components (MNC, 2005). Load bearing steel piles are used as foundations for various types of structures and hence corrosion is very much influenced by the environment such as soil, water and soil-water interface. Corrosion of steel pile foundations may result in reduced capacity in the axial and lateral directions. Hence, understanding the rate of pile corrosion is essential to select the appropriate repair methods to avoid excessive deflection and failure (Decker et al. 2008).To prevent the deterioration mechanisms that attack a pile, it is fundamental both to identify and understand the deterioration mechanism that has been the cause of damage. Understanding the deterioration mechanism allows the engineer to design a repair that will combat this type of damage. It is widely recognized that the corrosion of carbon steel in soil, water and soil-water interface proceeds according to the following simplified anodic reaction and cathodic reactions in the presence of oxygen (Decker et al. 2008)."

Bastnasite is a natural fluocarbonate of the cerium group and affords an abundant and high-grade source of the lighter rare-earth elements. As part of a broad research program in rare-earth element technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines directed extensive experimental work to separating and purifying the rare-earth elements in bastnasite. By the use of a combination of techniques--classical chemical, ion exchange, and solvent extraction--the processing of a bastnasite concentrate to obtain the individual rare-earth elements, or groups of elements, was accomplished. A bastnasite concentrate, containing about 60 percent rare-earth oxides, was sulfated with concentrated sulfuric acid to eliminate the carbon dioxide, fluorine, and silica. Calcination at 1,200° F. made the gangue matter insoluble, thus permitting the separation of the soluble rare-earth sulfates. Essentially 100 percent of the rare-earth elements were recovered by this procedure. Since the rare-earth sulfate solution contained only trace amounts of nonrare-earth elements, subsequent separation procedures were simplified.

A common problem encountered in the mineral sands industry is that the mineralogical measurements used in defining the resource are not readily converted to metallurgical recoveries, which are used to predict the quantity of the final products. The problem stems from the different objectives of the exploration and metallurgical assessment programmes, and is often compounded by the use of different laboratory techniques and mineral definitions. Common mistakes include the misapplication of routine analysis, incorrect interpretation of mineral recovery, the confusion of mineral recovery with product yield and inconsistent definition of the same mineral. Experience has shown that unless these potential mistakes are identified, the measurement techniques used during exploration and metallurgical assessment are not compatible, often resulting in large errors in the prediction of mineral production. There are no easy solutions to the problem, as there is no universal assay technique which can cost effectively characterize all the mineral sands resources. The recommended course of action will therefore require several iterations to optimize the assay technique to suit the resource. Fundamental to the success of the measurement technique is the understanding of the mineralogy, its behaviour during mineral processing and the quality requirements for the final products.

This is a true story. Names have been changed to illustrate the importance and impact of carbon monoxide risk management in explosive blast projects and the community « Honey I’m not feeling good…” “What is going on Michael?” – – Michael was not answering so Julia, who was on the third level of the magnificent house, hurried down the stairs to check up on him in the basement. Today was day 2 of the construction work of the bathroom, yesterday they had excavated all the space for the shower. She started to breathe heavily as she was approaching the bathroom and saw Michael unconscious on the floor. “Michael!” – Julia immediately dialed 911. She opened a window since the air was heavy and went by Michael to hear him breathe and take his pulse. The paramedics took Michael on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital. “I’m feeling dizzy” she thought to herself a couple of hours after the incident, and heard Matthew say: “Mom, I’m feeling sick”. Suddenly, she felt like she would pass out and felt in danger but couldn’t move. She desperately searched for her cellphone and dialed 911 but couldn’t speak. The dispatcher sent the firefighters and paramedics to the GPS location that was appearing on the screen and the emergency team was alerted that it was a second call in hours at the same address. When the firefighters arrived, they had to force the door to enter and found Julia in her bedroom on the third floor and Anette and Matthew also unconscious in their bedroom, lying on their respective bed. There was no smoke but on their multigas meter, carbon monoxide (CO) peaked at 1500 ppm on every level of the house, which is abnormally high.

Increased coal production, wider use of indiscriminate mining techniques, improved cleaning methods, and greater emphasis on clean fuels is increasing the rate at which wastes accumulate Over the next several years, Colorado Plateau underground coal production is predicted to increase. Currently, mine refuse is deposited in canyons or lowland areas near mines. This study presents information on the nature of coal refuse and disposal practices on the Colorado Plateau. Samples were collected and analyzed to provide information to help formulate alternative methods for reclaiming refuse piles. The analyses were based on determining the capability of unmodified refuse to provide a suitable medium for plant growth. Local topsoils which would be used in reclamation were used as standards. Potential environmental hazards were assessed also. A general cost analysis was done for both surface and underground disposal and the advantages and disadvantages of each were assessed. Several problems were identified which, if solved, would increase the effectiveness of state regulatory programs.

Underground mine planning is characterised by a series of designs, starting with prefeasibility and culminating in operational. Information on the mineralisation and geotechnical conditions is available in increasing levels of detail, as development occurs. In the recently completed AMIRA Planning and Rapid Integrated Mine Optimisation (PRIMO) project, a methodology for producing good strategic and then tactical designs using new optimisation tools, was developed. At the strategic level, fundamental decisions must be made such as those relating to cut-off grade, bench heights, mining methods, access and haulage systems, properties of the mill, etc. The inputs are the block and financial models, geotechnical data, infrastructure and production costs, etc. Stope definition for strategic designs includes bench RLs (relative levels), orebody envelopes, and design and placement of amalgamated or simplified stopes. If multiple mining methods are under consideration, then stopes need to be associated with these. Access design must take into account decisions such as declines versus shafts, a template for level layouts and the topology of the access network. Some of the geotechnical and physical constraints are relaxed for strategic design stages. Strategic scheduling is high level, from a month to a year at a time. In the PRIMO project, software tools have been developed enabling the mine planner to rapidly produce a large number of such strategic designs. After the designs have been evaluated, the highest value designs are chosen and a small number of these can then be further refined at a tactical level. For these designs, the first step is determination of all stopes meeting physical and geotechnical requirements and constraints, allowing for complex stope shapes. Next, detailed layout of the mine access network is obtained, satisfying all operational and geotechnical constraints. Finally, more detailed scheduling is performed, over shorter time periods. The Melbourne University group has focused on optimal access design. In particular, the access network is optimised for minimum cost, taking into account the cost of haulage and development over the lifetime of the mine. Costs vary over the different parts of the network depending on the quantity of haulage and so a weighted network optimisation problem has to be solved. We have developed two software tools for this task, decline optimisation tool (DOT) and planar underground network optimiser (PUNO). DOT produces an optimal network of declines and crosscuts connecting access points on the levels to a portal or break-out point from existing infrastructure. PUNO designs the level layout, including footwall and hanging wall drives, development drives and connections to vent raises. A survey will be given of the capabilities of DOT and PUNO when used on some recent case studies. Our current goals include incorporating some aspects of ventilation design and modelling the development costs when additional ground support is required. This is an abstract only. A full paper was not prepared for this abstract.

Introduction and Early History The British Canadian Mine is one of four operating properties of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, and is located in the town of Black Lake, Que., five miles southwest of Thetford Mines. In the early days of as1bestos mining, this .property was owned by a few small companies who later became part of the Asbestos Corporation. First .to commence mining operations on the property was the Coleraine Mining Company who, in 1885, began selling part of their large holdings in the area to various asbestos mining interests. Of these, the earliest active companies were Manhattan United Asbestos, the Glasgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, and the Anglo-Canadian, the last named later becoming the Standard and Dominion Asbestos Companies. Extraction of fibre was limited to what is now known as crude asbestos and the methods were primitive. Drilling was done .by hand and the ore was lifted by derricks operated by band winches. These were later replaced by horse power, but it was not until 1887 that the first steam-operated boom derricks were introduced, at the Anglo-Canadian mine. The ore was hand cobbled and the asbestos roughly classified and bagged. The waste rock, which by today's standards contained a considerable percentage of marketable fibre, was dumped near the pit. The first attempt to separate the asbestos from the host rock by mechanical means was made in 1888 by the G1asgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, then known as the Scottish-Canadian Asbestos Company, whose mill, erected in that year, was the world's first asbestos mill. Though the equipment was crude, the principles employed were the same as those used today with much larger units. The next steps were the use of rock drills, the adoption of steam rail transportation for moving mill rock, and conversion to the more flexible cable-derrick hoisting.

Independent of the method chosen to forecast production, an accurate method to project metal extraction is needed in order to accommodate leach cycles that exceed leach data on hand and thus be able to accurately forecast production. Metal extraction data must be developed for each ore type identified in the deposit in order to apply the correct rate of leaching when a specific ore is being treated. Curve fitting is used to model the rate of disengagement of metal into the pregnant solution. This paper provides a description of a curve fitting algorithm developed by Mr. John T. Bartlett, inventor of the METSIM™ process simulation program. A methodology is provided by which the metallurgical data developed is evaluated to determine if accurate projections may be made from the data. A criteria has been developed to help determine when a column experiment may be terminated.

The study on improving surface coat refuse disposal site inspections included surface inspections of 15 refuse disposal sites. Monthly aerial photos were taken of the sites and computer methods were used to determine elevation changes. Photogrammetric techniques that were used are described in detail. A comparison of the results of each of these inspection techniques is included. A detailed evaluation of the photogrammetric techniques was made and conclusions were drawn concerning the advantages and disadvantages of using aerial photography and photogrammetry as part of the inspection procedure. Operators' opinions of the aerial photography methods are included.

I. 2965) the authors gave references to articles covering (1) the effect of temperature on the equilibrium 2C0 - CO2 + C, (2) experimental work that has been done on learning the gases existing at various elevations in columns of burning coke, (3) extension of this work to the tuyere zone of an iron blast furnace, and (4) the paper itself gave similar analyses of the gaseous oxides of carbon at the tuyere zone of a lead blast furnace and showed the temperatures obtaining there. There were also references in the above paper to the literature on (5) how the lead compounds likely to be present might be ex¬pected to react. A careful study of the original articles selected as references will give a good background for the present work.The following very brief recapitulation may be convenient before considering the tuyere zone in the blast furnaces at Kellogg. The ""producer gas reaction"" (1) of course goes to the left at increasingly higher rates of speed with increase of temperature. When air is blown upward through a grate and a column of hot fine coke alone, oxygen as such penetrates from some 2 to 3 inches only, under the conditions obtaining as to the amount of surface exposed per unit volume of air. When air is blown at about 20 pounds pressure through the tuyeres in the side of an iron blast furnace into a column of coarse coke (plus furnace charge) it may penetrate for 30 inches before the oxygen is entirely used, burning first largely to CO2. Within wide limits, the rate of feeding air into the furnace has practically little effect on the composition of the gases obtaining in the fuel bed of fine coke, this being true particularly of the gases leaving the bed. Some 10.5 inches above the grate the gases contained 22 per cent of CO by volume, and a little further up the CO2 had practically disappeared. This gave the familiar three zones in both the iron blast furnace and the gas producer; in order of entry of the air, in the first the oxygen burned largely to CO2, in the second the CO2 was reduced to CO, and the third the CO2 was practically absent. In the furnaces at Tooele, conditions were somewhat erratic but the first two zones were present, there being, however, no zone in which CO2 and 02 were both entirely absent."

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability.

Review of the literature on solid solutions discloses that the relation between composition and magnetic susceptibility is not linear . Recalculation using a transformation of composition values to parameter v values provides for a linear relation with the magnetic susceptibility to the 1/2 power . Application to minerals is illustrated by the olivine and enstentite series .

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. "Partial reduction reactions in the Ni-AI-O system, starting with the spinel compound NiAI20 4, are used to form metal-ceramic microstructures. By suitable choice of processing parameters, such as reduction temperature, oxygen partial pressure and time, two different morphologies of nearly pure Ni particles, equiaxed and rod-like, form within a ceramic matrix, which is either a-A12O3 or a metastable ""defect spinel"". Electron microscopy studies were performed for microstructural characterization, phase identification and chemical analysis. The fracture toughness of the Ni-AI2O 3 mixture was significantly improved with respect to that of the original spinel phase. The important issues that must be addressed to form useful metal-ceramic microstructures by partial reduction reactions rue discussed. It is shown that cracking at the original spinel grain boundaries, likely due to the large volume changes associated with the reduction reaction, can be avoided by the addition of small amounts of ZrO2• Initial results illustrating effect of ZrO2 on the microsuuctures are presented.IntroductionEngineering materials used in load bearing circumstances, particularly under extreme conditions (e.g. high temperatures or stresses), generally are formulated with complex microsuuctures. Such composite-like materials can possess properties unobtainable by either of the individual constituents. With metal-ceramic composites, for example, a material can be obtained with an optimum combination of the low density and high strength of the ceramic, and the toughness of the metal. For high temperature service, where demanding conditions are often present, for example, inside jet turbine engines, a successful new material must have low density, high Young's modulus as well as good oxidation resistance, strength, fracture toughness, creep and fatigue resistance. The candidates include intermetallic compounds, and metal-ceramic, intermetallic-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic composites."

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

"INTRODUCTION During peacetime, the United States uses less than 3,000 tons of chemical-grade celestite annually. The war need, however, was estimated to exceed 15,000 tons a year.Hitherto; most of the required chemical-grade ore has been imported from England, Mexico, and other foreign countries. If foreign sources do not find it possible to meet the demand for ore of chemical grade (plus 92 percent SrSO4), it is expected that requirements could be satisfied by concentrating low-grade domestic ores. Celestite deposits on Brown, Nolan, Fisher, and Coke Counties, Texas, are considered to be possible sources of supply for this low-grade material. The Bureau of Mines explored the most important deposits to determine the grade and amount of ore available and conducted ore-dressing tests to obtain a suitable method of concentration.The exploratory work, consisting of test pitting and sampling, was carried on under the direction of W. E. Dennis, one of the authors of this paper, from October 8, 1942, to January 30, 1943. The ore dressing-tests described herein were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Laboratory at Rolla Mo.In this report, a particular deposit is referred to by the name of the landowner on whose .property the .deposit lies. The location of the deposits investigated is shown on figures 1, 2, 3, and 4.The celestite deposits were previously studied by the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas, and the results of its investigation are published in Mineral Survey Circular No. 46."

A new graphical method, which is a modification of that proposed by Buckley and Leverett', is presented for the determination of the displacing fluid saturation at breakthrough for frontal drive mechanisms. This method is applicable to all types of fluids, which may be either soluble or insoluble in the oil at reservoir and injection conditions. This adaptation has unique advantages in handling problems in which either liquids or gases are the displacing fluids. INTRODUCTION In the displacement of oil from a reservoir with water or gas injected into the formation or by the expansion of a gas cap, the determination of breakthrough or flood advance is important to define the initial and subordinate phases of the operation. Thus, the determination of the displacing fluid saturation at breakthrough is fundamental to the establishment of over-all reservoir production. Methods for analyzing this saturation and for calculating production rates have been previously reported1,'*".". All of these methods utilize the rate equation for linear flow developed by Buckley and Leverett1. xs = QT - Qn/A? (?fu/?Su) .....(1) Sp where f, represents the volumetric fraction of displacing fluid in the total flowing fluid within the reservoir as is defined by: fo = 1/1+ ku/kd µn/µn .......(2) Since the time, ?, necessary for the flood front to travel distance ?X is unknown, Eq. 1 cannot be solved directly for the determination of the breakthrough point. Therefore, it becomes necessary to solve Eq. 1 simultaneously with an equation representing a fluid bal-ance on the reservoir behind the flood front. To develop such a fluid balance equation, it has been assumed that the fluid composition is uniform in the reservoir behind the flood front. Based upon this assumption, the follow-ing equation can be derived from a material balance on the displacing fluid: x = (?X) s Dx ? x=0 [ Snx - Sn1 ] dx = QT - Qn/A? It is readily observed that the displacing fluid satura-tion behind the flood front, Snx, may be determined through the simultaneous application of Eqs. 1 and 3. After Sox is determined, it is then possible to calculate the gas-oil and/or water-oil ratios and the rates during the initial and subordinate phases of production, and thereby define the production history of the reservoir. In this presentation only the de-termination of Snx is considered, and the reader is re-ferred to the several texts in reservoir engineering2,4,5 for a complete discussion on the methods for establish-ing the production history of a reservoir. Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts S0122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines.
