Aerodynamic stall of vane-axial fans is both an operational problem and a safety concern. While deep stall is relatively easy to detect, the diagnosis of a partial stall is often more difficult. Its transient nature and the fact that its symptoms can mimic electromechanical problems of the fan and fan drive assembly, or vice-versa, compound the difficulty of making a timely and accurate diagnosis. A knowledge-based expert system known as FANPRO has been developed to aid in the diagnosis of these problems. FANPRO and its application are the subject of this paper.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

Sedimentary and igneous rocks are the two primary sources of phosphate that are mined and beneficiated to fertilizer. During the beneficiation process, phosphate is lost into the tailings. We investigated phosphate concentrations in tailings dumps at Minjingu mine, Tanzania using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to quantify the chemical compositions. The phosphate content in the tailings varied from 12.91% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) in Tailings 2 to 19.61% in Tailings Dump 1. The naturally occurring phosphate concentration in rocks ranges from 3% to 35%, and phosphate tailings from various locations with P2O5 concentrations as low as 6.46-12.65% have been beneficiated to commercial fertilizer. Our investigation revealed that phosphate concentrations in Minjingu tailings may be sufficient to be recovered for commercial applications. Suitable recovery methods are discussed, and we recommend that beneficiation should be performed to minimize the loss of phosphate into tailings. Further research is needed to identify the optimal beneficiation methodology.

The use of a thin-film piezoelectric stress gauge to determine the pressure profile in a detonating explosive has been demonstrated. These PVDF gauges have measured, in the borehole, the Chapman-Jouget pressure and the release adiabat of the detonation products for several explosives including ANFO and ANFO/emulsion mixtures. The technique can provide: (1) a direct measure of the blasting stimulus, (2) a sensitive QA tool for the blaster, and (3) a means to examine the magnitude and effects of preshock from adjacent bore holes. The PVDF pressure gauge is self powered, can measure pressure from a few bars to 400 kbars, has high time resolution (0.05 µsec), and is easy and economical to use.

This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts S0122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. Based on the placement of lead and its consumption in industry branches, the paper deals with the composition of lead in the massive of Kopaonik. Removal, tenuity and grinding of galenit. The paper in particular treats the flotation process, and also treats physico-chemical bases of reagents in the process, as well as decanting, drying, filtering and storage of concentrates. Verification of the chemical composition of Pb concentrates with Pb, Zn, Bi, As, Sb, In, Au, Ag, etc. It is special that in Kopaonik massive the ratio of Pb: Zn composition is 1.4:1.0 and during the flotation lead is inclined to go with pirotines concentrate more than is allowed. We are strongly focused to maximally decrease the Pb amount that goes with pirotine concentrates and wastes. The paper as such gave the first effects in optimizing of these parameters with positive effects in flotation process in Trepca.

Rockfalls are major and essentially unpredictable sources of danger, particularly along transportation routes (roads and railways). Thus, the assessment of their probability of occurrence is a major challenge for risk management. From a qualitative perspective, it is known that rockfalls occur mainly during periods of rain, snowmelt, or freeze-thaw. Nevertheless, from a quantitative perspective, these generally assumed correlations between rockfalls and their possible meteorological triggering events are often difficult to identify because i) rockfalls are too rare for the use of classical statistical analysis techniques and ii) all intensities of triggering factors do not have the same probability. In this study, we propose a new approach to investigate the correlation of rockfalls with rain, freezing periods, and strong temperature variations. This approach is tested on three French rockfall databases, the first of which exhibits an outstandingly high frequency of rockfalls (approximately 950 events over 11 years), whereas the other two databases are more typical (approximately 140 events over 11 years). These databases come from (1) the national highway RN1 on La Réunion Island, (2) a railway in the Bourgogne-Franche Comté region, and (3) a railway in the Auvergne region. Whereas a basic correlation analysis is only able to highlight an already obvious correlation in the case of the “rich” database, the newly suggested method appears to detect correlations even in the “poor” ones. Indeed, the use of this method confirms the positive correlation between rainfalls and rockfalls on La Réunion Island database. This method highlights a correlation between cumulative rainfalls and rockfalls in the Bourgogne region, and it detects a correlation between the daily minimum temperature and rockfalls in the Auvergne region. This new approach is easy to use and also serves to determine the conditional probability of rockfall function of a given meteorological factor. This approach will help to optimize risk management in the studied areas based on their meteorological conditions. Nevertheless, even if some rockfalls are correlated to meteorological factors, other seems to occur independently of these factors, which highlights the unpredictability of rockfall hazard.

Blast violence has always been a criteria that has been analyzed without a quantitative approach relying on opinions of those viewing the blast and oftentimes does not transfer between open-pit mines, quarries, and construction projects. Added to this confusion is that on many regulate projects, such as U.S. Army Corp of Engineers construction projects, the definition of "flyrock" or violence can vary, and contractors must be able to meet this requirement. This project analyzed hundreds of blasts from various construction projects to develop a new metric to determine blast violence - the Violence Factor. If a blast is fired using 1.25" (32 mm) diameter product and a 10-foot (3 m) bench, vertical uplift of 60 feet (18.3 m) would be considered extreme and violent by any professional in the industry. However, a 100-foot-high (30.5 m) bench using 12" (305 mm) bulk product, having a vertical displacement of 60 feet(18.3 m)might be considered typical or non-worrisome. This is where violence factor is beneficial as itprovides a system of scaling the violence of a blast based on the bench height to give manager a keyperformance indicator (KPI) which is easy to monitor and can provide a large amount of information onsite-specific design variables for their performance on blasting and the end-results of the blast. The Violence Factor of a blast is an integer which is scaled to determine how high vertical uplift of a blast is compared to the bench height. This project analyzed numerous blasts to determine what blast design variables contribute to violence. This violence has also been shown to occur when a non-optimal breakage mechanism, cratering, occurs and the design criteria that lead to this cratering. Finally, this paper will present typical results of various levels of violence including backbreak, fragmentation, and muckpile configuration.

"INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of iron ore are found in Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd, and Polk Counties in northwest Georgia. The deposits are generally small and irregular in shape. The ore is usually referred to as ""brown ore"" and is predominately limonite. The crude or ""bank ore"" has to be washed and concentrated before being shipped.The proximity of the deposits to the Birmingham furnaces and a favorable freight differential permit the operation of many deposits that otherwise would be uneconomical. The district produced 413,468 long tons of brown-ore concentrates, averaging 45.53 percent iron in 1943.The necessity of developing additional iron-ore reserves for the war energeucy to supplement the production of the Birmingham district, prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate exploration of the more promising northwest Georgia deposits. Thirteen properties in the four counties were explored during the program (fig. 1).HISTORY AND PRODUCTIONSeveral furnaces were operated in the district until the early 1900's, ranging from charcoal furnaces to more modern plants with capacities up to 50 tons of pig iron. No furnaces have operated for about 40 years, the product being shipped to Alabama and Tennessee.Bartow County iron mining is declining, although formerly it was the principal producer of the district. Most of the known merchantable ore deposits have been exhausted. For the past 3 years the Mitchell-Hodge mine has annually produced about 225,000 long tons of concentrates containing 46 to 43 percent iron and at present is the only large producer in Bartow County."

The use of the cyclone as a dense-medium cleaning device was first described by Driessen6/ in 1945, after development of the process in the Netherlands during the German occupation of World War II. A pilot plant was built in the Netherlands soon thereafter, and the first commercial plant was built in 1948. By 1958, 18 plants were operating or under construction.7/ Thus, economic factors in Europe, where the high cost of coal places a premium on efficient cleaning, dictated rapid adoption of the cyclone. American reception of the process differed. The Bureau of Mines presented the results of its own small-scale cyclone experiments in 1946;8/ showing a sharp separation between coal and impurity; adoption by industry now is taking place. There is now much greater emphasis on the efficient cleaning of fine coal, and the first American cyclone plant has begun operating; others are planned or under construction. With the present interest in improved treatment of fine coal, the Bureau of Mines felt that additional performance data on the cyclone would be helpful to industry. Therefore, a complete, open-circuit pilot plant was built to make cleaning trials on American coals covering a wide range of washability characteristics. Five raw coals and one middling product were included in the investigation, and each was cleaned at several densities; 17 cleaning trials are reported.

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

This paper has been confined to the consideration of the working of thick seams, from six feet to sixteen feet, which are pitching at about thirty degrees to the horizontal. The discussion has been limited to these set conditions because they are the ones of commonest occurrence in the Southern Alberta bituminous coal district, because, from the point of view of safety, thin seams are more easily worked, and because a discussion of all the possible combinations of thick and thin seams pitching at angles varying from zero to ninety degrees with the horizontal would involve a task impossible in the time available. It has been assumed that the mine makes gas freely and that the coal is friable and tends to make inflammable dust which is highly explosive. Since the problem requires the taking into account means of maintaining a high proportion of lump coal, it is further assumed that lump coal commands a price considerably higher than the price which can be obtained for run-of-mine or for slack coal. Figure 1, tabulating the various factors which must be considered and their relation to each other, indicates diagrammatically the complexity of the problem. Any method of working becomes divided into two distinct components, the active workings of the mine and the old abandoned workings. While these are in a measure distinct, they are nevertheless inter-related, as shown in the diagram.

INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely ant accurately many previously published limits.

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. "Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

As ligas com memória de forma (LMFs) destacam-se por apresentar propriedades especiais, possibilitando seu emprego em diversas aplicações tecnológicas. Esses materiais podem ser integrados a uma matriz polimérica, agindo como um reforço, constituindo uma nova classe de matérias, chamada de Compósitos Inteligentes, que têm despertado interesse por sua versatilidade na criação de atuadores e/ou sensores. Nesse contexto, fios de nitinol, foram tratados termicamente para obter temperaturas de transformação próximas a ambiente. Em seguida, amostras desse material foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para verificação das temperaturas de transformação. Posteriormente, os fios tratados receberam um treinamento termomecânico para obtenção do efeito memória de forma reversível e assim executar o movimento similar a abertura e ao fechamento de uma garra, pretendido para o atuador a ser desenvolvido. Após essa etapa, os fios já treinados foram incorporados a matriz constituída por silicone e resina epóxi, dando origem a um compósito que ao ser ativado por uma corrente elétrica, reproduz o movimento do treinamento termomecânico dado aos fios. Esta pesquisa tem por finalidade, desenvolver um atuador constituído por um compósito inteligente, analisando características como: transformação martensítica e flexibilidade.

Não existe na literatura formal uma descrição dos ensaios de caracterização necessários para a correta determinação de parâmetros de balanço populacional para escalonamento pelo método de Austin. As rotinas envolvidas são normalmente aprendidas em Universidades e Centros de Pesquisa que contam com engenheiros e/ou pesquisadores especificamente treinados para estes experimentos. Isso faz com que estes sistemas modernos sejam pouco utilizados na engenharia e restringe sua aplicação. Este artigo tem por objetivo estabelecer os procedimentos envolvidos na caracterização de processos de moagem e fomentar a utilização de técnicas modernas de escalonamento de moinhos de bolas nas empresas.

Carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Perry County, Ky., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Seven samples, representing the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, and Fire Clay beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Carbonizing properties of blends of Flag and Fire Clay coals, with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 low-volatile coal from McDowell County, W. Va., also were determined. Expanding properties of the Flag and Fire Clay coals and their blends were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. The Perry County coals tested are high-volatile A bituminous in rank and, with the exception of the Hindman-bed sample, which contained excessive sulfur, were chemically suitable for metallurgical use. The three coals tested in the sole-heated oven contracted less than normal for Appalachian coals of similar rank, Blending the Fire Clay and Flag coals with 20 or 30 percent low-volatile coal increased coke strength appreciably but increased the expansion beyond normal limits for industrial blends.

Grade control programs aim to deliver economic tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. The foundation of a successful program is high quality sampling supported by geology and a suitable data management and modelling system. Underground sampling methods include chip, channel and panel samples; grab/muck pile samples; and drill-based samples. Grade control strategy is related to mining method and orebody type. Sampling protocols must be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. Holistic studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required for sample collection and preparation protocol optimisation through ‘Theory of Sampling’ application. Where possible, such programs should be undertaken early in the life of a project. Appropriate assaying procedures are also required. Program implementation will require suitably skilled individuals to train and mentor staff, with ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring and review will allow protocols and staff to be updated as required.
