The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

INTRODUCTION The placing of the monolithic concrete lining of the Bi-County water tunnel illustrates the state of the art in the materials, equipment, methods and productivity available to the industry for this type of construction. This paper describes the management and engineering rationale used by Clevecon, Inc., a subsidiary of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, in developing the concrete mix designs, the design of the specialized equipment, and the methods used in the manufacture, transport, and placing of the lining. Also discussed are the changes to the reinforcing steel design instigated to facilitate its handling and placing, as well as to enhance the quality of the lining. The intent is to bring to the attention of designers the effects certain design aspects have on the construction of reinforced concrete tunnel linings, as well as indicate the areas where research and development effort should be expended to further reduce costs for this type of construction. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bi-County Water Tunnel West is a water transmission main owned by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission of Hyattsville, Maryland. The facility was designed by A. A. Mathews Division (formerly STRAAM Engineers, Inc.) CRS Group Engineers Inc., Rockville, Maryland. It is to be utilized as the central feeder of potable water for the northern suburbs of Washington, DC, extending some 4,597 meters from a riser shaft at its western terminus to the eastern interface, with a similar tunnel which extends eastward about 5,180 meters; the majority of its length being under Interstate Highway 1-495. ThIS communication presents the results of a determination of the permeabilities of hydrogen and deuterium in a iron from 360° to 560°C. Recently Heu-mann and primas' have given values of the diffusivity and solubility in a iron of the two isotopes from which the permeability can be calculated. The work reported in the present communication, however, is a direct measurement of the rate of permeation of the isotopes through an identical iron specimen under the same conditions, so that systematic errors can be minimized in the calculation of the ratio of the permeabilities—the value which is usually of main importance in establishing limits for isotopic differences in diffusive processes. Experimentally the procedure used was the usual one: a steady-state flow of gas produced by a pressure difference across an iron membrane was observed as the pressure rise with time in a previously evacuated, calibrated volume connected to the outlet side of the membrane, while a constant pressure of gas was maintained on the opposite inlet side. The membrane was a cylindrical tube 9.38 cm long, 0.730 cm inside diam, 0.187 cm wall thickness, fabricated of 99.95 pct vacuum-melted National Research Corp. iron (less than 0.003 pct C). One end was sealed by a heliarc-welded iron (99.95 pctj lid of 0.147 cm thickness; the other end of the tube was welded to a 304 stainless-steel tube (0.318 cm ID and 0.318 cm wall) which connects to a vacuum system and to the calibrated volume including a dibutylphthalate manometer. The temperature of the iron membrane was maintained constant to ±0.l°C and was measured with an iron-constantan thermocouple which was calibrated against a standard Pt/Pt-Rh thermocouple: the temperature variation along the length of the membrane did not exceed ±0.5°C. Hydrogen was allowed to pass through the membrane assembly for 72 hr at 615°C before permeability measurements were begun. The system was tested at temperature before and after the experiments by a substitution of helium for hydrogen in the inlet side; under these conditions the pressure rise observed in the outlet side was negligible at all times. The gases used for the permeability measurements were 99.95 pct Matheson prepurified H2 and 99.7 pct D2 (0.3 pct HD) from the Isomet Corp. The gases were dried with liquid N2 before use. In Fig. 1 the logarithms of observed flows, jt, for a pressure difference of 73.4 cm Hg are plotted against T-1 Each point in Fig. 1 represents the slope determined by a least-square evaluation of a plot of the pressure in the outlet side of the membrane against time, including at least two separate sets of observations. Each point in the figure has an uncertainty of ±0.6 pct arising from the experimental uncertainty in the pressure and time measurements. The standard deviation of the observed pressures from the straight lines in all cases is less than the experimental precision of the measurements. The observed flow, jt, includes a small but not negligible flow through the stainless-steel connection.

WITHIN recent years gas adsorption methods have been developed for measuring the surface area of finely divided materials and have become extremely valuable in research on the corrosion and the catalytic activity of metals. Rather elaborate apparatus is required, and a single determination is so time-consuming that these methods have not been utilized to the fullest extent; the methods are un-suited for most routine control work such as that encountered in powder metallurgical operations and in processes employing metal catalysts. These difficulties are largely eliminated, and surface area is reduced to a routine determination if the liquid-phase adsorption of a surface-active agent such as a fatty acid can be used. When the affinity of the fatty acid carboxyl group for the solid surface is greater than its affinity for the solvent, a unimolec-ular layer of orientated fatty acid molecules will be formed at the solid-liquid interface in a manner similar to that of a compressed fatty acid film on a water surface. The measurement of surface area is then reduced to a measurement of fatty acid adsorption. This propitious circumstance, first investigated by Harkins and Gans,¹ has been employed with somewhat inconclusive results by a number of investigators in evaluating the surface properties of metals, metal catalysts, and metal oxides. The specific surface area values for nickel and platinum catalysts, determined from the adsorption of a number of fatty acids from various solvents, were found by Smith and Fuzek² to agree with values calculated by the gas adsorption technique of Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller," he so-called BET technique. And recently Orr and Bankston4 have also reported good agreement between nitrogen gas and stearic acid adsorption results in the measurement of the surface areas of clay materials. On the other hand, Ries, Johnson, and Melik5 found only order-of-magnitude agreement between these two methods in studying supported, cobalt catalysts having specific surface areas as great as 420 sq m per g; the reason is partially attributable to the very porous nature of the materials. Greenhill,6 investigating the adsorption of long-chain, polar compounds in organic solvents on a number of metal powders, concluded that a uni-molecular layer of stearic acid was formed on exposure of the solid to the acid solution and that the presence of an oxide or another film did not alter this result. Furthermore, the adsorption process appeared to be the same whether or not the sample was degassed prior to exposure to the solution. Greenhill estimated the surface area of one of the powders he investigated from microscopic diameter measurements, and obtained a rough check with surface area evaluation. Russell and Cochran7 found moderate agreement for alumina surface area results by fatty acid and gas adsorption methods. In addition, they also found that the prolonged heating and evacuating pretreatments previously used by investigators were unnecessary. The present work, however, considerably extends these previous investigations, shows that fatty acid adsorption can be used to determine the surface area of a variety of metals and metal compounds, offers further confirmation of the correctness of gas adsorption methods, and presents a simplified technique for the determination of the metal surface area which is suitable for routine work. Experimental Technique Basically, the fatty acid adsorption method is quite simple. It consists of exposing a sample of the material of which the surface area is desired to a fatty acid solution of known concentration. By analysis of an aliquot of the solution, the concentration after adsorption has occurred may be determined. The difference between the initial quantity of acid in solution and the final quantity is that quantity of acid adsorbed by the sample. The specific surface area of the adsorbent material may be calculated from the quantity adsorbed and the weight of the sample. In agreement with the findings of others as outlined above, it was found entirely unnecessary to degas or pretreat the nonporous materials employed other than by drying them thoroughly. However, precaution was necessary so that the dried sample entered the fatty acid solution with little exposure to moisture. The effect of moisture on the interaction of stearic acid with finely divided materials has been thoroughly investigated by Hirst and Lancaster." They found the presence of water merely reduced the amount of acid adsorbed by powders such as TiO2, SiO2, Tic, and Sic. With reactive materials such as Cu, Cu2O, CuO, Zn, and ZnO, however, water was found to initiate chemical reaction. Only with ZnO was reaction observed when the solid and the solu-

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. With increased co-firing of coal and different biomasses in power plants, there is a growing need to study and characterize the produced, often heterogeneous ashes and to assess their utilization as secondary raw materials. In this work, we compare different methods for characterizing the ash compositions. These methods include scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The content of carbonaceous residues in the ashes was measured with CHN Sanalyzer. The methods and the pretreatment required for each of the analysis were studied in detail for three ashes: (1) coal, (2) peat and wood, (3) peat and wood residue with dolomite addition. The limitations of each method will be discussed. This work gives guidelines for selecting a rapid and reliable method for analyzing the suitability of the ash for a particular application.

THERE are three chief production zones of tungsten ore in China. In the Province of Kiangsi mines are located at Kanchow, East River, and West River. Their combined production is understood to amount to 300 to 350 tons of ore per month, and their original exportation is made through the port of Kiukiang, largely to Shanghai. The second zone is in Kwangtung Province, the mines there being at Tayulin. Produc-tion reaches about 200 tons per month and cargo is gen-erally exported through the port of Hong Kong. In the Province of Hunan approximately 25 tons of ore are produced monthly in the mines at Ton-on. Tungsten ore from Kiangsi and Kwangtung Prov-inces is generally about 70 per cent WO, (tungstic acid), while that from Hunan is of lower quality, run-ning about 65 per cent WO3. Kiangsi ore is received from the mines in 100-1b. and Hunan in 224-lb. gunny sacks. No repacking is done except as it is made neces-sary by the condition of the sacks. Kiangsi Province contains the Chinese districts pro-ducing the largest amount of salable wolframite or tungsten. Many districts west and south of Kiangsi have been found to have wolframite deposits.-Com-merce Reports.

The kinetics of silicate adsorption from aqueous colloidal (SO2 . nH2O) silicate sols on thoria (ThO 2) surfaces were determined at 100, 150 and 200°C in an autoclave system. The amount of chemisorbed silica on the thoria surface was determined by means of infrared spectroscopy. First order kinetics were observed in all cases with the anomalous result that the first order rate constant was found to vary with the initial amount of silica added to the system. These results have been correlated quantitatively by means of a strain model of adsorption involving two types of surface silicate bonding, both of which may be readily observed in the infrared spectrum. Initial adsorption occurs rapidly to produce one type of surface silicate followed by a slow transition to a second type of surface bonding, the latter transition representing the slow step in the adsorption process. Initial interest in silicate adsorption on thoria arose from the dispersive effect silica has on finely divided thoria in aqueous suspensions. Spaepen et al studied the equilibrium adsorption of silica on thoria and noted increased adsorption up to approximately 215°C with a notable decrease in adsorption at temperatures above 215°C. Similar results were observed by Cho and Wadsworth2 who identified two types of surface silica by infrared spectroscopy. At temperatures of 100°C and above, rapid initial adsorption occurred producing a surface species with maximum infrared absorbance at 9.4 After extended periods of time, the 9.4 species converted to a more strongly bonded surface silicate with maximum infrared absorbance at 10.3. The latter was very strongly bonded and difficult to remove by desorption in hot distilled water, while the 9.4 species could be removed more readily by similar treatment. The 9.4 and 10.3-p species were distinguishable from free unadsorbed silica which had maximum infrared absorbance at 9.1 The kinetics of the formation of the strongly chemisorbed silica (10.3) on thoria as determined by infrared examination are presented in this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As a source of silicate, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) or Ludox HS (30.25% SO2), DU Pont colloidal silica in aqueous suspensions, was added directly to a thoria slurry made up of one liter of distilled water and one gram of thoria. The thoria used was designated D-16-650 and was received from the Chemical Technology Div. of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. It was prepared by firing thorium oxalate at 650°C. The D-16 thoria had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 sq m per g as determined by nitrogen adsorption.* This thoria 'Determined by Unlon Carbide Nuclear Co., ORNL. had a total adsorption capacity for silicate of approximately 19.4 mg of silica per gram of thoria.1 This amounts to approximately one SiO2 molecule for every surface thoria site. "The McMurray formation in the Athabasca oil sands deposits of northern Alberta is part of the world’s second largest proven crude oil reserves. The formation is characterized by stratigraphic layers that correspond to three different depositional environments: Marine, Estuarine, and Fluvial facies. Resource estimation for oil sands has traditionally relied on polygonal and inverse distance schemes. These techniques are simple and straightforward in practice, but they do not permit reliable uncertainty assessment. This paper describes the modelling of the McMurray formation using modern geostatistical techniques.Geostatistical modelling should be performed within homogeneous geological facies. The methodology for geostatistical simulation within each of the identified facies involves: 1) assessing the most appropriate stratigraphic transformation for optimization of the correlation structure; 2) determining representative distributions with declustering and debiasing techniques; 3) modelling spatial continuity of the bitumen grade, fines grade, water saturation, and other petrophysical variables; 4) performing estimation and cross validation as checks against simulation results; 5) performing simulation for uncertainty quantification of bitumen and fines grade; and 6) model checking of simulation results against the input data, and comparisons against the kriged models. These steps are described in detail. The application of these models for uncertainty quantification in support of resource classification is also discussed."

The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.

Cyril Stanley Smith in his classic 1948 Institute of Metals Lecture&apos; noted in the case of annealing twins that: "It is well known that approximately the same number of twins per grain and the same general geometry are maintained in large grains as in small ones, a fact that certainly suggests a mechanism such as the above where boundaries and twins grow proportionately together. If this view is correct, a spherical grain should have no mechanism for keeping its twins." Such a constancy of twins per grain would be of particular interest as a tool for the study of the origin of annealing twins. It has been proposed by Mathewson2 and later by Barrett3 that in face-centered cubic metals slip occurs in the {111} Plane by <112> shears which combine in pairs to produce the macroscopically observed <110> movement. This proposal is schematically inviting since <112> slip permits the atoms of one plane to move along the interatomic valleys of its neighbor rather than up the hills across the atom sites. There is strong experimental evidence? that annealing twins result from the growth of nuclei in the form of "twin faults" produced by single <112> shears. It is possible that more twin faults would form at low deformation temperatures than at high ones, because the more rigid lattice may increase the tendency to "freeze" the twin faults and prevent their dissipation in slip. This is suggested by (1) the greater resistance to slip at low temperatures and (2) greater tendency toward mechanical type twinning at low temperatures (a summary of these factors is presented by Seigle and Brick5). These considerations would suggest the following: a. Constant twin/grain ratio for specimens deformed constant amounts at a constant temperature, but annealed at various temperatures above the recrystalliza-tion temperature. b. Larger twin/grain ratios for re-crystallized specimens previously deformed constant amounts at lower temperatures. The purpose of this investigation is to test these considerations. One half in. rods of phosphorous deoxidized electrolytic copper and 70-30 alpha brass (68.36 pct Cu, 0.005 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Fe, 31.62 pct Zn remainder) were rolled to a thickness of 0.350 in., milled to specimens 0.350 X 0.437 X 2 in., and annealed at 700°C to an average grain size of 0.065 and 0.090 mm, respectively. These specimens of each metal were then rolled 50 pct reduction in thickness and annealed one hour under conditions which were all combinations of the following: Rolling Annealing Temperatures. Temperatures. °C °C -70 400 25 500 200 600 Standard metallographic techniques&apos; were used to prepare specimens. By the method of lineal analysis7 using a minimum of ten samples of fifty grains each for each specimen, the ratios of twins* per total grains, twins per twinned grain, twin families* per total grains and twins per twin family were determined. Recrystallized grain size was determined by A.S.T.M. comparison methods.8 All observations were made on the rolling plane. The results are tabulated in Table 1.

It seems unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remark-able operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to analyze theoretically the partisl-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9° Be. North Texas crude. The chart is illustrative of batch distillation. Theoretically, if the oil were heated by a single flash in a pipe still, the partial-pressure effect of the light products would result in the removal of the same amount of vapors at a lower temperature. Practically, we find that because of the necessarily extensive fractionating equipment required when separating many products all in vapor phase, the oil has to enter the separator at temperatures corresponding to or even above those required in the batch still. Furthermore, in single-flash distillation the vapors evolved in the heater must be superheated to the outlet temperature. Very little is

"Discrete event simulation (DES) is an appropriate framework for the plant-wide analysis of copper smelters. These smelters apply a common set of chemical reactions: copper-iron sulfides are blasted with oxygen-enriched air, sending the iron into a slag phase and the sulfur into the offgas. Moreover, conventional copper smelters exhibit similar operational dynamics: a smelting furnace operates continually, feeding into an alternating set of converters that produce batches of blister copper. The thermochemical and operational commonalities of copper smelters are integrated within the DES framework. This serves as a common basis to begin evaluating the system dynamics of individual smelters. For complex problems, the simulation framework should be developed in phases, incorporating feedback from different personnel who have complementary perspectives. Sample computations are provided in this paper based on the Hernán Videla Lira smelter, whose production is constrained by meteorological conditions. IntroductionWorld copper production is approximately 18.5 million t/y (Brininstool, 2015), worth $80 billion a year. Out of this total, 75 percent comes from the pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide minerals (Fig. 1), which occurs in copper smelters. The remaining 25 percent is from the hydrometallurgical treatment of oxides and complex ores (Rotuska and Chmielewski, 2008), which uses solvent extraction and electrowinning.The current paper describes the pyrometallurgical processing, recognizing that the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics are well known (Degterov and Pelton, 1999), with the notable exception of minor element transport, such as arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi), silver (Ag), gold (Au). The latter is an ongoing area of research, as smelters are faced with increasingly complex ores (Devia, Wilkomirsky and Parra, 2012; Swinbourne and Kho, 2012). This paper focuses on the system dynamics of copper smelter operations, which has received considerably less attention than the chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.Smelter engineers and managers may contribute to the sustainability of their plant by improving their understanding of operational system dynamics. Indeed, we have prompted smelter improvement projects (Navarra, 2016; Navarra et al., 2016; Navarra and Mendoza, 2013) simply by adapting methodologies that are commonly used in other sectors. These previous works incorporate principles from computer-integrated manufacturing (Groover, 2000) and theory of constraints (Dettmer, 2007), featuring the use of discrete event simulation (DES)."

Study of the normal interaction between flotation collectors and the silicates through measurement of the electrokinetic potential carried out by the streaming potential and flotation recovery methods indicates that the interaction is wholly 07 partly of electrostatic origin. In some cases, it partly consists of the chemical affinity of the polar head of the collector for the active surface sites. Reagents composed of a polar head and a paraffinic chain and forming micelles in solution were used as flotation collectors. They are sodium dodecylsulfate (anionic collector) and dode-cylammonium chloride (cationic collector). The adsorption isotherms on biotite of alkylamine chloride having 10 to 18 carbon atoms in their chain all show a sharp change in slope relevant to the condensation of alkylammonium ions into bidimensional phase.1-1 Condensation is possible because of the relative homogeneity of the adsorbing surface and of the very strong lateral binding forces through Van der Waals type bonds in the adsorption layer. The different isotherms are seen to coincide when, instead of the equilibrium concentration, the under-saturation ?µ = kT In C/C, is plotted in abscissa, C representing the concentration of the solution with which the adsorbed layer is in equilibrium and C, the saturation concentration of micelles in solution or. critical micellar concentration. The electrical resistivities of aluminum alloys containing CU, Ge, Zn, Ag, Cd, and Mg were found to increase linearly with the atomic percentage of the solute atoms. Application of Linde&apos;s rule to these data suggests that each aluminum atom contributes 2.5 electrons to the metallic bond. ALTHOUGH aluminum invariably exhibits a Jt\. valence of three in ionic solids, it does not follow necessarily that its valence in the metallic state is also three. As a matter of record, many properties suggest that the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is less than three. For example, as shown in Fig. 1, the atomic radii1 of the metallic elements in the solid state decrease with increasing atomic number at the beginning of any one period. The atomic radius of aluminum, however, is greater than that which would result from a regular decrease in atomic radius with increasing atomic number, suggesting that the number of bonding electrons in aluminum is somewhat less than three. Correlated with the anomalously large atomic radius of aluminum is its abnormally low melting temperature. As the atomic numbers increase in any one period, the melting temperatures of the metallic elements increase.&apos; As shown in Fig. 2, however, the melting temperature of aluminum (13) is only slightly greater than that of magnesium (12). Again the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum appears to be nearer two than the expected value of three. In addition Ageev and Ageeva3 alculated the electron density distribution in the aluminum lattice. A comparison of such electron density curves for various assumed valence states of aluminum with experimentally determined curves suggests that the actual number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is between two and three. Hume-Rothery and Raynor&apos;, " have suggested that the above-mentioned abnormalities are associated with the overlapping of the Brillouin zones of metallic aluminum when it is in the usual face-centered cubic structure. The importance of the number of bonding electrons in metals has been extended recently into the field of mechanical properties. While formerly it was thought that the plastic properties of alpha solid solutions were primarily dependent upon the lattice strain induced in the solvent by the solute, it is now known that the difference in the number of bonding electrons of the solute and solvent also has its influence on the plastic properties."1&apos; In order to achieve a satisfactory correlation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of aluminum alloys,"&apos;T however, it was necessary to assume that the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum was about two rather than the expected value of three. It appeared to be desirable, therefore, to seek other criteria for evaluating the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum to its alpha solid solutions, especially in view of the practical as well as the theoretical importance of the effect of valency on the plastic properties. "A new method for oxidative destruction of cyanide in industrial waste waters and slurries, such as gold mill barren liquors, tailing slurries and flotation tailings has been developed at the Inca research laboratories. Rapid decomposition of cyanide and related species is attained by treating the waste waters with a mixture of S02 and air at controlled pH and in the presence of a small amount of copper which acts as a catalyst. The approach selectively oxidizes cyanide and metal cyanide complexes, and also removes iron cyano complexes which are not removed by alkaline chlorination.The new method is shown to be less reagent intensive and therefore more economical than alkaline chlorination for treating gold mill and flotation waste waters. INTRODUCTIONOver 90% of the gold mined in Canada is extracted from the ore by ""cyanidation"". Wastes from the process consist of tailings which contain free cyanide, cyanide combined with heavy metals, thiosalts and thiocyanates. Because of the concern over the effect of toxic cyanides on the environment, all cyanide containing effluents will have to be treated in the future to meet certain government set concentration limits."

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology that results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoidsJ have been implicated as important biochemical mediator5 of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dust could influence the production of proinflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Primary cultures of rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500 and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE;V, thromboxane Ai (T}(Ay, and leukotriene 84 (LTB; levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 production was markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE1 production. Exposure of AM to freshly fractured coal dust resulted in a significant increase in production by AM, while exposure to stale coal dust did not influence AM TXA1 production. Neither "fresh" nor "stale" coal dust had any effect on LTB4 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in TXA1 PGE.,, TXA; and LTB4 production compared with control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 11oo•c resulted in eicosanoid levels that were not significantly different from control. These effects were still apparent 8 wk after calcination of the silica particles. Silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was coal, and amorphous fumed silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was crystalline silica. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production and therefore may be important in the pathophysiological consequences of occupational mineral dust inhalation.

Great Bear lake, the fourth largest body of water on this continent, comprises an area of approximately 12,000 square miles, and is set astride the Arctic circle, with a large portion of it witnessing both the Arctic winter night, and the Arctic summer day with its midnight sun. The very name itself, Great Bear, suggests an Arctic region. The seasonal contrasts at Great Bear lake are very marked by the cold and darkness of winter, and the warmth and brightness of summer. Signs of winter such as low clouds, snow, sleet, fog, and night frosts, generally appear the latter part of August, while ice forming on bays during the last two weeks in September ends boat travel on the lake about September 30th.Early in June the ice leaves the river mouths, during the last ten days of the month it disappears from small bays, and at some time during the last two weeks of July the main body of the lake becomes navigable. In 1916, the ice disappeared earlier than usual, and the lake was navigable on July 5th. Great Bear river generally breaks up about June 1st, but, on account of ice cliffs and floes, it is not navigable with safety until early in July. Even then, the traveller is confronted with the Charles rapids, but these might be overcome by a wagon or motor road, such as the one from Fitzgerald to Fort Smith: However, in 1931, Mr. A. W. Boland, Fort Norman, N.W.T., carried with scow and motorboat practically all freight between Fort Norman and LaBine point and Hunter bay, at the east end of the lake. During July and August, two types of clothing are required, for, although the days are mainly ones of warm sunshine, the nights are cloudy and cold. In the winter season, fur clothing is used exclusively. Considerable timber, mainly white spruce, suitable for fuel and building purposes, borders the lake and extends eastward to the Coppermine river. North of the lake, no timber is found except in the river valleys, but with oil and coal possibilities near Fort Norman, the fuel situation might be solved.
