Color video or digital cameras have been installed over flotation cells to monitor color, bubble size, froth movement, and other characteristics. These systems are designed so that the camera provides flotation performance information just as any other sensor might. Factorial tests have been run to monitor and measure the variation in froth characteristics as a function of flotation control settings. Ultimately, it is envisioned that froth image sensors can be used to monitor and control the flotation performance as effectively and for less cost than current analytical systems.

In 1939 the Geological Society of America published a summary of the geology of the ore deposits of the Mississippi Valley region, This volume, edited by E. S. Bastin, contained contributions from the foremost students of the area which described theregionalgeologic setting of the various deposits as wel as the detailed geology as then known. The various ideas as to the origin of the ores were discussed with the general, though not unanimous, conclusion that the deposits were hydrothermal products, Only those deposits in the immediate Mississippi Valley area were considered without any attempt to introduce evidence from other districts generally accepted as being of the "Mississippi Valley type." Since 1939, much new information has come from extended studies of two of the important districts described in the 1939 report andimportant extensions of the known ore have been found. Likewise, concentrated geologic efforts have been fruitful in severa "Mississippi Valley type" districts - both U. S. andforeign - not treated in the 939 paper. The wealth of new field information on the structural and stratigraphic relations of this interesting ore type, coupled with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies of the past 18 years, makes desirable a review of our present knowledge and interpretation of these important deposits which for many years have yielded over 20 percent of the world's annual production of lead and zinc, together with large amounts of fluorspar and barite. No restatement of the details of the geologic evidence willbe attempted here; the interested student is referred to the papers cited. Slide No. 1 shows the distribution around the world of the deposits under consideration. A principal thesis of my remarks is that there is so much similarity in all these deposits that it seems necessary for all of them to have had a similar mode of origin, whatever that may be. Variations in the shape, size and mineralogy of the orebodies give each district some individuality, but there are enough of the "typical" characteristics present in all cases to make classification in the "Mississippi Valley type" agreeableto most geologists. Thus the overall process giving rise to the ore solutions surely was the same for all in the group. Either they all have igneous affiliations or they all do not. Acknowledgment of this kinship between deposits in the various districts offers many advantages in trying to arrive at a decision as to just what the origin may have been, for the amount of guiding and limiting evidence which must fit into the hypothesis is greatly increased over that available in any one district, To a certain extent this was recognized by the authors of Special Paper 24 in treating all of the immediate Mississippi Valley areas together; by expanding the consideration to include ore deposits of this type all over the world the changes of success, i.e., arriving at the correct answer, are improved several fold. Since most of these districts are quite simple structurally, a number of hypotheses might fit the facts in any one of them, but if the facts to be met can safely be drawn from all the districts, then the explanations which will fit all the data are much less numerous. One purpose of this paper is to call attention to the field facts that have been reported from the .various areas which seem to have an important bearing on the kind of ore fluid that was responsible for the ore and on the way it circulated.

"When boring a tunnel, homogeneous hard rock is the exception rather than the rule. While contractors can set goals such as meters per month and performance incentives, it is also prudent to plan for difficult ground. A properly designed tunnel boring machine (TBM) can tackle fault zones, water inflows, squeezing ground, or whatever the risk may be. The alternative is not a good one: modifying the machine in the tunnel after bad ground is encountered. Not only does this result in increased downtime, but it also needlessly exposes the crew to the tunnel conditions. In the worst case scenario, the entire operation grinds to a halt.However, an accurate GBR cannot always be obtained, particularly for mountainous, high cover tunnels in remote locations. And even with a thorough GBR, unforeseen geological events can occur. What can be done in these situations? Difficult Ground Solutions (DGS) is ground investigation system with a suite of options that can be added to a shielded hard rock machine or dual-mode, Crossover machine to better enable advance when conditions are unknown or difficult conditions are anticipated.DGS consists of a set of integrated features tailored to a specific project’s geology. The main components of the system allow for ground investigation ahead of the TBM, increased monitoring and methods to keep a machine shield from becoming stuck.In fault zones and squeezing groundIf fault zones or squeezing ground are known or suspected, or if there is even a possibility of encountering them, this can greatly affect the TBM operation. Shielded machines protect the crew from the surrounding rock, and they can bore and line a tunnel efficiently, but in fault zones and converging material their shields can be their downfall. Avoiding a stuck machine is paramount to project success. DGS employs several features to avoid the problem of a machine becoming stuck. The first of these is multi-speed cutterhead drives. These drives effectively give the machine multiple modes of operation—high speed, low torque for hard rock, and low speed, high torque for difficult ground. Designing a machine with high-torque, continuous boring capabilities allows that machine’s cutterhead to restart with break-out torque in difficult ground. The net effect is that the machine can keep boring in the event of a face collapse and can bore through fault zones and running ground where the potential for cutterhead jamming exists. Going one step further, multi-speed gearboxes give the machine the ideal earth pressure balance- (EPB-) type torque if larger sections of soft ground are anticipated.Secondly, TBMs can get through squeezing ground and faults using Continuous Shield Advance. This design utilizes a stepped shield configuration — where each successive shield is slightly smaller in diameter — to avoid becoming stuck in converging ground. External shield lubrication is an added insurance against becoming stuck, using a series of radial ports that can pump Bentonite into the annular space to act as a lubricant in squeezing material.As a last effort, if a machine has already become stuck the TBM can utilize augmented, or “super” thrust. Additional thrust jacks can be added to supply an extra boost in a short stroke, generating enough force to break loose a trapped shield."

The White King / Lucky Lass Superfund site consists of two former uranium mines in south-central Oregon. The remedy included consolidating two large mining overburden stockpiles that contained low levels of radioactivity and heavy metals by moving over 700,000 cubic yards of material and then capping the combined stockpile. An innovative armored cap design was used to minimize the stockpile footprint and thereby prevent disturbing existing wetlands. In addition, the stockpile was designed to merge into the surrounding topography. The remedy also included stream restoration and development of new wetlands. The stream was returned to its pre-mining channel, with the addition of hydraulic features to create new wetlands. The wetlands have greatly enhanced the ecological value of the remedy and the site.

"INTRODUCTIONOne of the key drivers for the selection of a mechanized tunneling method in good quality rock masses is a good excavation advance rate. In order to achieve satisfactory advance rates, a good geotechnical performance of the rock grippers in main beam open tunnel boring machines (TBM) is required, besides other factors related to ground support and the performance of the cutter head.One well known potential issue of main beam gripper TBM is associated with the bearing capacity of the tunnel side walls while crossing fault zones or poor rock masses in general. Such a mechanism is similar to that of footings on rock and perhaps the most common problem associated with gripper performance. Depending on the quality of the rock, the rock under the gripper contact may experience significant damage and crushing (Figure 1), eventually affecting the TBM advance rate due to a lack of tunnel wall reaction/support. Such a mechanism is primarily dependent on rock quality, applied loads and gripper size.In the case of large diameter TBMs (e.g., D > 12 m), a second potential failure mechanism may arise associated with the loss of confinement within a rock pillar between twin tunnels, even in good quality rock but particularly in bedded sedimentary strata. Punching of the rock pillar may develop due to excessive shear along bedding partings and sub-vertical joints (Figure 2), particularly under a low stress environment. As a result, this mechanism is dependent on both the rock pillar width between twin tunnels and stress conditions around the tunnels, in addition to the previous factors described for the first failure mechanism."

"Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are at a “plateau” and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas Refinery disaster, organizations that have “exemplary” safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters, the BP’s Deepwater Horizon Rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Looking into the causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset, or its culture? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since1995, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions of near zero organizations (NZO) that suffered unexpected disasters, based on extensive research by the author. More recently, the massive West Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, and the Train Disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada underlined the same trends. Organizations may experience calamities not because they are bad, or unsafe, but because they have become “cult-like”. INTRODUCTION The train disaster of 6 July 2013, in the small town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec, Canada, in which 47 people were killed, had many strange pre-cursorsso-called “black swan” events that have occurred in many different industries. Black swan events are so rare, that there is almost zero chance that they will ever occur again, but they are so calamitous that the responses to these are emotional and irrational, (but necessary) and in those responses, the seeds for other, different black swan events are put into place. It is not what we don’t do, or do wrong, that causes modern disasters, it is what we do. The same things in the culture that make us successful, may also cause the disasters. We slowly, incrementally and insidiously ‘float’ into disaster. One such Black Swan event: The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster, killing 167 men in the North Sea on the 6 September 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry."

Discrete event simulation modeling provides a tool to quantify the throughput capacity of stockyards. Interactions between the main equipment types (trains, dumpers, conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders) can be captured, including route blockages, breakdowns, and planned maintenance. Simulation has been successfully used at world-class stockyard facilities to determine current capacity and to identify gains resulting from improvement projects. Recent projects have focused on iron-ore, coal, and soya facilities, but the technology is suitable to be used on any bulk material type.

Promising placer gold exploration sites offshore Lunenburg County are drowned pre- and post-glacial river channels and auriferous glacial tills. Gold values up to 5.67 9/m3 have been encountered in the vicinity of the Ovens Peninsula offshore Lunenburg County. Moderate gold values associated with notable amounts of heavy minerals were reported from various other exploration sites in this area. This paper highlights the major geological and gemorphological features for placer gold depositions in southern Nova Scotia. The past to present gold exploration activities nearshore and offshore Lunenburg County are summarized and potential areas for placer gold identified.

Thousands of mine air samples are taken underground each year by MSHA inspection personnel in order to further assure that miners have a safe and healthy environment in which to work. While most air samples are taken with stain tubes, many samples are obtained in evacuated containers and returned to a laboratory for more accurate analysis on a gas chromatograph. In order to enhance the accuracy, reliability and repeatability of the samples taken with evacuated containers, improved procedures have been developed, which are described in this report, for filling two different types of evacuated sample containers using either mechanical or electrical pumps. In those instances, such as when sampling strata gases in drill holes, where mathematical calculations may be required for proper sampling, example calculations are provided. The use of a third type of evacuated container, which is generally restricted to non-specific sampling of the ambient mine atmosphere, is also described.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. This report describes a smoke particle detector which utilizes a novel three electrode configuration and 5.0 [] source of Americium 241. The detector operates on the principle of diffusional charging by a region of unipolar molecular ions. The detector is sensitive to particle concentrations in the range of 10 to 5 20 ug/m3. The detector is intended for use primarily as an early warning fire detector but has the potential for other applications of particulate monitoring. In particular, this report adresses the potential use of the detector for monitoring diesel particulate matter (DPM). To assess the viability of this application, particle size data obtained from in-mine sampling of both DPM and dust were used to derive detector sensitivity functions for DPM and dust as a function of their mass concentrations only. These sensitivity functions are dependent upon the average diameters and size distributions of the DPM and dust. Using the derived sensitivity function for DPM, experiments were conducted in a ventilated tunnel where the true DPM mass concentrations, measured using a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) were compared to the mass concentrations calculated using the detector sensitivity function. The agreement between the two measurements was good, indicating that with additional experiments, coupled with in-mine evaluation of the detector, refinement of the device for use as a continuous monitor for DPM appears feasible.

The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

In China, the total reserves of vanadium, reported as V2O5, in stone coal is 118 Mt (130 million st). Recovering vanadium from such a large resource is very important to China?s vanadium industry. The technology now being used to recover vanadium from stone coal has the following two problems in the leaching process: a low recovery of vanadium and high acid consumption. To resolve these problems, a new leaching technology is proposed. The effects of factors such as H2SO4 concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time, and the types and additions of additives were studied. By adding 1.5% (by weight) CaF2 and leaching the roasted residue of stone coal with 5.4% (by weight) sulfuric acid at 90°C for 12 hours at a liquid-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, the leaching degree of vanadium reached 83.10%. This proposed leaching technology gives a feasible alternative for the processing of roasting residue of stone coal and can be applied in the comprehensive utilization of stone coal ores in China.

Production of CO2 is an inevitable consequence of burning fossil fuels, with the only CO2 sequestration technique feasible in the immediate future being its injection in various geologic media. This paper discusses the factors that influence the injection, movement, and storage of CO2 into deep coal seams, while simultaneously increasing the production of methane. The results of a laboratory-scale study to evaluate the movement of CO2 in coal, its ability to displace methane, and the capacity of coal to retain CO2 are presented. The findings are compared with observations at one of the two field-scale pilot operations practicing CO2 injection in coal. Finally, the paper summarizes the research issues that require further investigation.

"One of the most pervasive diseases in the mining industry is noise-induced hearing loss. The exposure of miners to noise levels above the permissible exposure level results in hearing loss in approximately 80% of coal miners by retirement age. In this context, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop noise controls for longwall mining systems, which are used to extract half of the national underground coal production.From field measurements, previous research determined that the dominant sound-radiating components at the shearer of a longwall system are the two cutting drums used to remove coal. Due to the dimensions and complexity of longwall mining systems, the NIOSH project developed a validated finite element model of the cutting drum to use in predicting the sound radiated by the drum due to the excitation forces experienced in underground operations. This same model will be used to develop engineering noise controls for the drum. The excitation forces arise from the interaction of the cutting bits and the coal and are transmitted to the cutting drum through the bit holders. Due to the adverse conditions at the face, and a lack of instrumentation approved for underground use, the operational coal cutting forces have not been assessed before. To this end, NIOSH, in collaboration with Michigan Technological University, developed a self-contained, intrinsically safe instrumented bit to measure these forces.This paper describes the development of the instrumented bit and the measuring of operational coal cutting forces at three working coal mines. The measurements revealed that the forces have a flat spectrum, representative of the impact nature of these forces, up to around 100 Hz. Above this cutoff frequency, the force magnitude decreases at a rate proportional to the inverse of frequency squared."

Introduction A new mining agenda is before us. Born of government policies and world economies, the years ahead will show reduced growth. Metals, mining, and most other natural resource industries are inflation dependant and capital intensive. For these, a long period of contraction of outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. In some cases, this will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity. But this will occur only if the cost of production - including cash operating and debt service costs - comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook for metals mining can be characterized as bearish. A US bank economist said mining companies planning their five-year forecasts should take current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or decline slightly. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low-cost producer will succeed. That means only the producer with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed. Gaining a perspective One must look back 30 years to see the evolution of the capital markets, for metal mine financing. This period can be divided into two economic periods. The 1950s were a time of stable economics. Mining companies earned and reported good profits. They had good corporate creditworthiness. In essence, mining companies of the 1950s were highly self-reliant. When equity infusions were needed, they were easily obtained. Financial management kept long-term debt low. Fixed rate, long-term financing was readily available in the long-term bond markets. The commercial banks of the 1950s were rarely used by the mining industry. When necessary, mining companies went to the banks for short-term financing - the kind that was needed for working capital requirements. Changing rhythms In the old rhythm there was an orderly market. Even into the mid-1960s, 75% of world annual copper production was controlled by eight companies: two in the UK, one in Belgium, and five in the US. During times of poor market demand, these producers would control supplies to the market. They took their losses out of retained earnings. Capital was easily restored during the ensuing good times. The new rhythm called for copper to be an economic means to a political end. Third World copper producers brushed aside the market fundamentals of commodity economics. Yet, the political solutions of these countries - their lack of response to the market - have seldom achieved their original objectives. Each commodity has its own old and new rhythm. Aluminum may have a similar rhythm, coming 10 to 20 years later than copper. By the late 1960s, changes were occurring. Inflation was on the rise. Ore reserve quality was falling. As a result, capital expenditures were necessary to maintain existing output. These costs created an increase in corporate leverage, thus adding to inflation and rising interest rates. Indicators A comparison of the gross national product (GNP) deflator index, consumer price index, and the metal mining deflator index is instructive. (Fig. 1 and Table 1). With 1972 equal to 1, note that the metal mining deflator reached its lowest point in 1967. From that point, the metal mining deflator has accelerated severely for 16 years. Only two minor downturns occurred during the business recessions of the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. In essence, Fig. 1 shows that while GNP has grown modestly, a miner's dollar in 1972 would require $3.48 in 1980. This is an almost 17% compounded growth rate over that eight-year period. Beginning in the late 1960s, for the first time in mine financing, the risk of success shifted from the corporate balance sheet to third parties. Limited-resource financings were taken up by banking syndicates that accepted certain of these risks. The lender needed to be well acquainted with the types of risks to be evaluated. These include resource quality and quantity, construction and completion, capital and operations costs, market risks, force majeure, and political and exchange rate risks. Project financings became the basis whereby mining companies were able to maintain their borrowing capacities. In essence, the lender was willing to share some of the project risk while only receiving lenders' returns on these investments. Cleaning of three coals from the eastern US was tested by five selective agglomeration processes and one selective flocculation process. The coals and processes are described, and the results are reported and compared. Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.
