High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

Accounting for gold The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will be holding a 3- or 4-day school in the third week of May 1989 on the topic 'Accounting for Gold'.

The purpose of my few comments is to try to create a healthy perspective to constructively link considerations of the sessions to follow to those of the earlier sessions. I propose to do this by considering some of the issues and priorities related to the development of backfill systems and technology for South African gold mines.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. Lambrechts died at Franschoek on 30th January, 1988, at the age of 76 years after a long illness. Mintek Application Reports A new series of Mintek reports made its appearance in 1987. These are Application Reports, which present an overall perspective of each of Mintek's technical thrusts to ensure that the existing expertise can continue to be readily accessed. The following contributions were received to the paper entitled 'Safety in South African mines: An analysis of accident statistics', by H.S. Eisner and J.P. Leger, which appeared in the J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 88, no. 1, Jan. 1988, pp. 1-7. Contribution by H. WAGNER* The paper by Dr H.S. Eisner and Mr J.P. Leger is critical of the safety situation on South African mines and portrays the industry as having little concern for the health and safety of its workers. Moreover, the casual reader gains the impression of deliberate misinformation by the industry to the public concerning safety maters. Furthermore, certain socio-economic reasons are advanced for the apparent differences between the fatality and injury rates reported for coal mines in South Africa and those for the United Kingdom. Contribution by S.A. WATTS. Authors Eisner and Leger are to be commended on their paper, which highlights, according to their interpretation, various shortcomings of both the Chamber of Mines accident statistics and those published by the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs. Authors' Reply We gratefully acknowledge Dr Wagner's contribution to the discussion on our paper. For convenience, we shal use his sequence of comments in our reply. Before doing so, however, it may be useful to explain how our paper came to be written. After the explosion at Hlobane Colliery in 1983, one of us (HSE), in February 1984, was retained by the lawyers acting for some of the dependants of the victims to advise on technical maters relating to the explosion. Contribution by Ms S.A. Wats Some of the points made by Ms Wats have already been answered in our comments on Dr Wagner's contribution. We are fully aware that the number of accidents leading to absences of less than 4 days would be much greater than shown in our bar chart, and are grateful to Ms Wats for drawing attention to the specific exceptions that can make a 1-3 day accident compensable and that are clearly responsible for the relatively low count in that category of the chart.

The technique of backfilling in the gold mining industry is dependent on the dewatering of slurry to form a solid support system. In many cases flocculants are added to the slurry to increase the rate of dewatering. To ensure that a stable support is obtained it is important that the chemistry, application and limitations of these flocculant additives are understood. Flocculant additives have to be added at a point where minimum shear will occur. (Shear occurs when a flocculant is exposed to excess energy resulting in breakdown, of the floc.) To ensure that optimum results are obtained it is important that personnel involved are trained to use the flocculant additives and dosing equipment correctly.

This was evident right from the start of the organization of the SAIMM Colloquium on Leaching, which was held at Mintek on the 8th and 9th November, 1988. The response to the cal for papers was so good that the Colloquium was extended to two days, instead of the usual one day.

In some mining situations, backfills are not only required to be free-standing but are also expected to provide hangingwall support. It may therefore be specified that the backfill withstand a certain calculated stress within a given time. Given the materials available, the choice of backfill composition is not always straightforward, and an approach to the evaluation of cemented tailings backfill is therefore proposed. The general use of such a method will greatly assist in both the scientific analysis of the material properties for industry-wide purposes of comparison and decision-making as regards the choice of fill.

When gold plant residues are cycloned for producing a coarse product for backfilling the gold and uranium values are upgraded in the backfill product. Gravity concentration, wet high intensity magnetic separation and froth flotation were investigated as first-stage recovery processes to recover these economic values from backfill prior to placement underground. This paper addresses the recovery of values from flotation concentrates and also details the economic feasibility of a treatment route including flotation, followed by roasting of flotation concentrate to liberate gold entrapped in pyrite and reverse gold leaching of the calcine so produced.

Inelastic deformation of highly stressed rock in deep mines needs to be quantified in both time and space. Since most deformation occurs by shear, continuous monitoring of discontinuities in the rock from boreholes holds promise. The casing. Al interpretations of shear movements are based on a simple relation between shear displacement and the resulting change in tilt of the sensor. A prototype has been constructed and has undergone laboratory trials with satisfactory results. Underground trials will commence shortly. The instrument as designed has the potential for other applications, both in the civil-engineering and mining industries. paper describes an instrument that is both cheap and reliable, and capable of monitoring such shear movements continuously. The principle of operation is based on two capacitive gravity sensors mounted orthogonaly to each other in a sealed aluminum

Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

A simple method for the application of excess shear stress (ESS) analysis to the mining of planar reefs is examined. The potential for seismicity associated with mining is expressed as the calculated increase in ESS on a regular grid of points 50 m above the reef, and is compared with observed seismicity around a deep-level, relatively geologicaly-undisturbed gold mine. Thirty regions were studied, involving over 2000 seismic events with magnitudes greater than 1,5 on the Richter scale and associated with almost 2 million square metres of stoping. The total seismicity, measured either as the number of seismic events or as the total radiated energy, corelated more closely with changes in ESS than with ERR. The incidence of rockbursts also favoured the ESS model. Corelation coeficients of around 0,8 for seismicity and ESS indicated that the assumptions inherent in the method used are collectively reasonable. The total seismicity in each region was found not to be strongly controlled by the presence of dykes and faults, although numerous individual seismic events were located close to such features.

The use of gravity or magnetic separation followed by upgrading on a shaking table recovered about 25 per cent of the copper and lead minerals, at a combined metal grade of 20 per cent, from the final flotation tailing at the Tsumeb Mine. Magnetic separation recovered the copper minerals more efficiently than the lead minerals; it also recovered finer particles more efficiently than standard gravity separators. However, the grade of the concentrate produced by magnetic separation was not of sufficiently high grade, and further upgrading by gravity separation was necessary. It was decided to install an 'all-gravity' plant, which would have the added advantage of acting as a monitor or 'policeman' on a plant that receives a fairly variable feed.

Published South African fatality and injury statistics for mine accidents are investigated. Where possible, the South African statistics are compared with those of other countries. Commonly held attitudes to the South African accident experience are also examined. Analysis reveals that the published accident rates present a more favourable picture than the rates actually experienced by underground workers. In addition, fatality rates in South African underground gold and coal mines do not differ significantly and have remained stable over the past decade, although the injury rates have decreased rapidly. No evidence was found that this is due to improved safety, and a comparison with international fatality and injury data suggests that it is not. The underground fatality rate for South African coal mining is, on average, eight times that of the UK, four times that of all EEC coal mines taken together, and over double that of the USA. Despite the unreliability of the injury rates, much has been made in South Africa of their rapid decline, an emphasis that appears to be misplaced.

The Colloquium, which was highly successful, was held concurrently with the 1988 Electra Mining Exhibition. A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.
