ABSTRACT: Settlements above fractured crystalline rock masses are rarely observed and in the past, geotechnical engineers would not expect substantial subsidence to occur in association with a deep tunnelling project. However, recent high precision levelling measurements along the Gotthard pass road in central Switzerland, have revealed up to 12 cm of subsidence along sections that pass several hundred metres above the Gotthard highway tunnel. Large-scale consolidation resulting from tunnel drainage and pore pressure changes in the rock mass are believed to be the contributing mechanism. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical modelling study focussing on the processes responsible for this subsidence. Results derived from 2-D discontinuum (i.e. distinct-element) and continuum (i.e. finite-element) modelling show that both discrete fracture deformation (i.e. fracture closure and shear) and poro-elastic consolidation of the intact rock matrix equally contribute to the observed magnitudes and shape of the surface subsidence trough. RÉSUMÉ: Des tassements aux dessus de massifs cristallins sont rarement observés et par le passé les géotechniciens ne prévoyait pas de subsidence significative associée avec des projets de tunnel profond. Cependant, de récentes campagnes de nivellement haute précision le long de la route du Col du Gotthard (Suisse centrale), ont mis en évidence des subsidences atteignant 12 cm sur des sections passant plusieurs centaines de mètres au-dessus du tunnel routier du Gotthard. Le mécanisme invoqué pour expliquer ce phénomène est la consolidation à grande échelle due au drainage du tunnel et aux variations de pression de pore dans le massif rocheux. Cet article présente les résultats d’une modélisation numérique intensive mettant l’accent sur les processus responsables pour la subsidence. Ces résultats obtenus grâce à des modèles 2-D discontinus (p. ex. éléments distincts) et continus (p. ex. éléments finis) montrent que la déformation sur des fractures discrètes (fermeture de fractures, cisaillement) ainsi que la consolidation poro-élastique de la roche intacte contribuent également aux magnitudes et aux géométries de subsidence observée en surface. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Beachtliche Oberflächensenkungen in einem kristallinen Gebirge, deren Ursache im Vortrieb eines mehrere hundert Meter tiefgelegenen Tunnels liegt, wurden bisher nicht erwartet und beobachtet. Dennoch wurden nach dem Bau des Gotthardstrassentunnels, entlang der Gotthardpassstrasse Oberflächensenkungen mit einem Maximalbetrag von 12 cm bei der Auswertung von Präzisions-Nivellements entdeckt. Dieser Maximalbetrag wurde in einem granitischen Gneis gemessen. Die örtliche Übereinstimmung zwischen dem maximalem Senkungsbetrag und dem maximalem Wasserzufluss zum Tunnel, und die zeitliche Abfolge von Tunnelbau und auftretenden Oberflächensenkungen lassen hydromechanisch gekoppelte Prozesse als Ursache dieser Gebirgsverformungen vermuten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Ergebnisse ausgedehnter prozessorientierter numerischer Simulationen präsentiert. Resultate aus den 2-D Diskontinuum (d.h. distinct-element) und Kontinuum (d.h. finite element) Simulationen zeigen, dass beide Verformungsmechanismen, d.h. an diskreten Brüchen und der intakten Gesteinsmatrix, gleichbedeutend für die beobachteten Senkungsbeträge und der Form des Setzungstroges verantwortlich sind.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. So, some new methods were developed, such as catalytically oxidizing technology of NOx to allow subsequent recovery of gold. Keywords: nitric acid; pretreatment; refractory gold

The use of fill in deep-level gold mining presents the possibility of achieving considerable economic and operational benefits if conventional support can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the combination of the properties of tailings from gold reduction plants and the narrow, flat, tabular reefs being exploited make conventional hydraulic filling very unpractical. Laboratory tests indicate that, with careful control of water content, these tailings can provide an adequate fill material. A variety of bonding agents have been investigated, and the most practical seems to be ordinary Portland cement. Even at very low cement contents some cohesion is achieved. The design and layout for a complete fill support system using hydraulic transport, dewatering, and pneumatic placement are discussed, and a surface field trial indicated that the principles involved are correct and that acceptable results can be achieved. This system and material would completely eliminate conventional timber and brick support, and a preliminary economic analysis indicates that filling is cost competitive on a direct replacement basis. All the operations for a full-scale operation are available or have been developed to a stage sufficient to indicate that the system is practical, although certain operations require further refinement.

Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically, the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived 'resource converted to reserve' area (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?) versus the 'resource available for mining' (which is derived from Datamine?) underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

The objective of this paper is to present some results of laboratory experiments during the investigation of stress-strain characteristics of Carboniferous sandstones at dynamic loading. During these experiments increasing frequency and the constant amplitude of dynamic loading and/or constant frequency at different amplitude of dynamic loading were applied. Der Gegenstand dieses Artikels ist, irgendeine von Ergebnissen von Laborexperimenten bei Messung der Spannungs- und Deformationscharakteristik der Karbonsandsteine bei ihrer dynamischen Belastung vorzustellen. Im Laufe diesen Experimenten wurden entweder anwachsende Frequenzen bei konstanter Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung, oder gleiche Frequenzen bei variabler Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung verwendet. L'objectif de ce papier est présenter quelques résultats d'expériences de laboratoire pendant l'enquête de caractéristiques de la tension – deformation de grès Carbonifère à sollicitation dynamique. Pendant ces expériences fréquence croissante et l'amplitude constante de sollicitation dynamique et/ou fréquence de la constante à amplitude différente de sollicitation dynamique ont été appliquées.

Before we look at what the challenges and opportunities for future coal mining will be, it is appropriate to have a look at whether there will be a coal industry in the future. There is much talk about the damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the need to replace coal and oil with more environmentally friendly energy sources. Yes, there is evidence that the current practice in burning of fossil fuel has certain negative environmental effects, however, the adverse effects for global economic development from inappropriate measures to control greenhouse gas emissions would be severe.

A comminution model and a quick laboratory milling test procedure are presented. These allow the determination of milling parameters for the - optimization of ball size and pulp density in operating mills estimation of the performance of new feed stocks in an existing mill - estimation of the expected milling performance for a new project. Information on the estimation of the size of mills to deliver specified amounts of comminution energy, and amount of expected ball, rod, and liner wear to allow cost estimates for new projects, is also included.

Excavations in deep level hard rock mines show rheological or time-dependent deformation responses to mining-induced stresses. These are generally not as dramatic as those seen in soft rock environments, such as potash and salt mines, but these deformations can nevertheless become substantial in time. It is usual to see total excavation closure at a much earlier stage than predicted by numerical models, and real-time measurements underground have confirmed that closure takes place on a more-or-less continuous basis, with highest closure rates observed after a blast and then slowly diminishing with passing time. This paper describes laboratory tests to determine the time-dependent response of hard rocks to loading, the results of the tests, and then quantifies these effects to explain the time-dependent phenomena observed underground. The primary intention of this work is to help explain the various time-dependent deformation processes around typical deep level hard rock tabular excavations. Three mechanisms were investigated in two typical hard rock types present in the deep level gold mines in South Africa, namely Ventersdorp Lava and Elsburg Quartzite. Uniaxial compression creep studies were done as the first part of the study followed by shear creep studies on discontinuities where crushed lava and crushed quartzite as well as a natural gouge were used as infilling. The last part of the study consisted of triaxial post-failure relaxation tests. The compression creep tests and the triaxial post-failure relaxation tests showed that the amount of energy dissipated by the lava is significantly less than for quartzite. For mines operating at depths greater than 2000 m the implication is that the lava must show a greater rockburst-proneness than the quartzite. Since the lava shows a lower post-failure stress relaxation, it can store sufficient energy for multiple rockbursts, which is seen in the clustering of multiple seismic events in the deep level mines. This study provides the first data available for energy change calculations in fractured rock masses, and provides the first general indications for rockburst intensities ahead of active mining faces.

The main source of Mn in raw materials for SiMn production is Mn-ore and Mn-rich slag from the high carbon FeMn production. The amount of slag per tonne of SiMn metal is mainly determined by the ore/slag ratio. Increasing share of FeMn slag at expense of Mn-ore will lead to larger slag/metal ratio in the SiMn process. High volume of slag leads to an increased consumption of energy and probably to higher losses of metal inclusions in the final slag. Excavation of a SiMn furnace has shown that only modest pre-reduction of Mn-ore with CO gas seems to be obtained. Nearly all reduction of MnO was finished at the top of the cokebed. Dissolution and reduction of quartz obviously takes place in the cokebed zone after the main reduction of manganese oxide is finished. Probably the ?pick up? of Si in the metal is quite fast and takes place as the metal trickles down through the cokebed towards the metal bath. The distribution of Si between SiMn alloys and multicomponent MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO slags is mainly determined by the process temperature, the silica content of the slag and its R-ratio = (CaO+MgO)/Al2O3. As an example, the equilibrium content of Si in the alloy will increase by about 6 % if the R-ratio is reduced from 2 to 1, provided constant temperature and silica content. The effect of temperature is also considerable. The equilibrium content of silicon will increase by approximately 6 % per 50°C in the temperature range 1550°C to 1700°C. The equilibrium content of MnO in SiMn slags depends first of all on the temperature and secondly on the silica content of the slag. At 1600°C the MnO content decreases from about 9 % at silica saturation to a minimum of about 3-4% when the silica content is reduced to about 40-45%.

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. "Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

Viscosity measurement was carried out over a narrow range of silica content around the fayalite composition. A wide range of temperature and oxygen potential was covered where the slag was completely liquid. In order to keep the slag composition and the Fe3+/Fe2+ratio constant, theCO2/CO ratio was kept constant as the temperature was varied. Increasing the Fe3+content has little effect on viscosity for slags with a silica mole fraction of 0.31. At higher silica contents, increasing the Fe3+content brings about a small decrease in the viscosity.

"Copper and copper alloys remain key materials for society today, with important uses found in the electrical, transportation, and construction industries. Copper demand is rising, with projections indicating that by 2025 global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million tons, up from the 22.4 million tons anticipated for 2015. This will require the opening up of dozens of new mines and numerous new smelters over this time period. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in contributing to meeting the rising global demand for copper. This paper provides a brief overview of the current copper smelting operations in Southern Africa. INTRODUCTION Copper and copper alloys are essential materials for today’s modern world. The familiar green copper patina colour seen on buildings and other structures sometimes belies its true “green” characteristic – copper is essential for key emerging technologies such as wind turbines, tidal generating systems, solar energy systems, electric cars and the like. Consequently, it is believed that there will be continued growth in copper demand in the years ahead. Projections indicate that by 2025, as an example, global refined copper demand will increase to 29.5 million metric tons, up from the 22.4 million ton level anticipated for 2015. This will require dozens of new mines, and of the order of the equivalent of 10 to 12 new 0.5 million tons of copper/year-sized copper smelters (after factoring projected copper produced by electrowinning (EW))—overall, a huge undertaking. Fortunately, Africa has significant reserves of copper, and African copper can once again play a key role in supplying this rising global demand for copper. Africa’s share of global mined copper production was about 10% in 2014; however this will increase significantly in future if announced new projects eventuate. Southern Africa has an important role to play in this process. The present paper provides a brief overview of copper smelting in Southern Africa."

Noranda has been involved in the development of technologies for automated mining vehicles since 1988, and has contributed in transferring the technological foundation for the suite of SIAM products now being commercialized by STAS. Some of these technologies are now mature and available for commercial implementation in operations where a strong business case can be made for the use of automation. Noranda has successfully implemented or is commissioning the Tele-remote, Auto-loading and truck Guidance technologies at two of its operations, based on operating needs and economic justifications. Operator acceptance, training and maintenance issues have been addressed in order to ensure the reliability and availability of the automation components. These represent the most significant challenges encountered and addressed during the implementation period.

Steel is produced in a basic oxygen furnace from hot metal obtained from a blast furnace. A sintered iron ore with good hightemperature properties (strength and permeability) should be used as feed to the blast furnace. The quality of this sintered ore depends on the reactivity of the iron ore used as feed to the sinter plant during the lime assimilation step in the sintering process. The penetration test is the standard method for evaluating the reactivity of iron ore with lime. It is, however, difficult to determine the exact depth of penetration from the standard test. A new test method is proposed that allows automatic evaluation of iron ores in terms of lime assimilation with increasing temperature. A comparison of the coefficients of variation for the new and standard methods for each ore type demonstrates that the results of the new test are more reproducible and more precise than those of the standard method. The test is also less time-consuming and easier to implement.
