The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

The challenge; to design production facilities and in particular separation equipment which have the ability to deal effectively with the ever changing composition of well fluids, over the life time of the field in which it is operating, ensuring maximum uptime of the asset coupled with consistently effective separation. Design engineers are, however, continually confronted with a dilemma when selecting materials of construction for Oil/Gas separation equipment, since they are generally obliged to select an acceptable material of construction, based on ?predicted? operating conditions, at the lowest acceptable cost. Consequently many designs are somewhat basic and do not take into account the constantly varying dynamics of the well fluids being released into the separator. As oil fields mature, oil companies endeavour to maximize revenue by maintaining oil and gas throughputs. This often results in an associated increase in water and sand volumes and, in order to maintain efficient separation, an increase in operational temperature and pressure; subjecting the equipment to operational conditions for which it was never designed. In reality, therefore, the limitations and constraints placed upon new construction design often result in Maintenance Engineers having to solve the ensuing problems in difficult ?in-field? environments. Should refurbishment or upgrade be required then the status of the platform and that of the vessel during shutdown will dictate how this is achieved. Hotwork on the vessel is generally not preferred due to the requirement for post weld heat treatment and re-classification of the pressure vessel, not to mention the added risk in terms of safety. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been few alternatives to conventional ?hotwork? repair and protection systems, especially since the performance of cold curing polymer based repair and coating systems, for use in oil and gas process equipment, has, until recently, been limited by their resistance to temperature and pressure in immersed conditions. In line with the continued development of high temperature / high pressure oil and gas fields however, recent breakthroughs in polymer technology can now offer both repair and protection solutions which are able to function effectively at temperatures up to 180°C in immersed conditions combined with resistance to the destructive forces of explosive decompression from pressures in excess of 90 bar. This paper will look at recent work that has been undertaken to determine the suitability of modern polymer based repair and protection systems as an alternative to hotwork; thus enabling newly designed and upgraded internals to be cold bonded into position and further protected with temperature resistant coatings, in order to minimize the downtime of the asset and further to protect the vessel internals from the Erosive Corrosive environment.

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

In many automated mines, multi media video and audio funtionality has to be combined with sensor information or steering commands, which is the idea of a new, PC based integrated and multi media capable control system. The new control system (Multimedia Control - MMC) bases entirely on TCP/IP networking and internet technology. For the first time, this enables the ‘intelligent’ use of video and audio information: pictures and voice sequences may be forwarded on request only, they may be stored if particular events occur (e.g. video black boxes) and sensor signals as well as actions from the automation system can directly be assigned with multi media sequences. MultiMedia Control entirely bases on object oriented software. It uses most modern software technology. As user interface, only a standard web browser is required. This makes the handling of different machines easy. By using mobile web pads, dedicated local operator interfaces are not required any longer. The service staff just connects to the automated equipment by – wireless –LAN to make required adjustments. Customization is easy using an open Application Programming Interface. Software modules may be added to the system without touching or recompiling existing components. The system was prototyped in 2000 using a demo-application. The performance tests showed very positive results both regarding the control system behaviour and the speed/latency timing behaviour of the multi-media information processed. The system now is slightly reshaped to completely meet the final product requirements. It is expected to be available by the end of 2001. The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

"One of the main challenges in the numerical modelling of ground support in underground excavations is to reproduce the performance of the sequential installation of the reinforcement while capturing the rock mass behaviour of an advancing face in 3D. The 3D modelling approaches used to simulate the progressive advance of excavations are mostly continuum and often cannot reproduce the rock mass failure mechanisms. The 3D discrete element method (DEM) can better reproduce structurally controlled rock mass failure mechanisms and can explicitly represent the reinforcement elements. This paper builds on previous work that reproduced the structurally controlled squeezing conditions in an underground hard-rock mine using 3D DEM and the in situ behaviour of reinforcement under pull conditions. It addresses important issues on the way reinforcement is explicitly introduced in discrete element models. A pseudo-3D model is employed to overcome the computational restrictions and time limitations of a 3D modelling approach. The work focuses on the scaling of the material properties of the ground support elements when the thickness of the model is not equal to the out-of-plane spacing of reinforcement. It demonstrates the scaling methodology based on the type of the modelled reinforcement elements used and investigates the significance of this approach. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach with respect to 2D and 3D methods are discussed. The results are compared with field data and previous modelling work done at the mine. IntroductionNumerical models can provide significant insight into the anticipated behaviour of underground excavations. The modelling of ground support, however, is not a trivial exercise. An effective representation of ground support in underground excavations should capture the behaviour of both the rock mass and the support elements. When numerical models are used for design purposes, the complexity of the problem requires significant time and expertise (Sweby, Dight, and Potvin, 2016).At a laboratory scale, numerical models have successfully reproduced the results of laboratory tests on rockbolts by explicit modelling of the bolt, the borehole, and the grout. Chen and Li (2015) used a continuum FLAC3D (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2012) model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of D-bolts as observed experimentally. Grasselli (2005) used a 3D finite element code to model the behaviour of fully grouted rods and expandable bolts under shear."

The first documentary evidence for the use of fire to extract a metal was furnished by the wall paintings of the ancient Egyptians showing workers using the blowpipe and bellows to increase the temperature to melt gold in a crucible. Furnaces grew in size and complexity, coke replaced charcoal in the blast furnace, and the Industrial Revolution took place in England that gradually spread worldwide. More metals became known and new techniques were introduced for their extraction. Among these, metallothermic reactions became prominent in the nineteenth century immediately after the discovery of the electric current and its use to liberate the alkali metals from their salts. Once these metals became available, they were used to produce aluminium from alumina that resisted all other methods of attack. Aluminium, now available on a large scale, was used to decompose the most stable compounds and liberate more metals that became the basis of modern civilization.

Residual stresses observed in rocks often result from non-compatible initial strains. These stresses can be determined when the incompatibility tensor associated with the initial strain tensor is known. The residual stresses in a cylindrical rock sample can be computed the sample is considered small enough for its incompatibility tensor to be constant. Les contraintes résiduelles, dont on observe couramment les manifestations dans les roches, résultent souvent de l’existence de déformations initiales non-compatibles. Ces contraintes peuvent être calculées lorsque le tenseur d’incompatibilité associé aux déformations initiales est connu. Les contraintes résiduelles dans une éprouvette cylindrique sont données dans le cas où le tenseur d’incompatibilité est constant. Eigenspannungen, die man haeufig in Steinen beobachtet, sind oft Ergebnis einer inkompatiblen Deformation des Anfangszustandes. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, DC, reverse polarity, dual-electrode The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode, and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions ? this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magneto-hydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

Elutriation of solid reactants from fluidized bed reactors can affect their process performance and efficiency greatly. Chlorination fluidized bed reactors for selective conversion of solid metal oxides to metal chlorides are used widely these days. This study provides a platform for a proper understanding of reactant solid characteristics and solid shrinkage interaction with elutriation rate constants using multi-sized particles, sand-like, ?Geldart B? chloridable materials. The study has found that actual elutriation rates of the reactive system are influenced by complex parameters? interaction including bed diameter, reactor freeboard height, bed minimum fluidization velocity, and reactant?s physical properties.

AngloGold South Africa region currently consists of twelve gold plants. These plants use a combined total of $20 million of cyanide per annum. Of this, the major portion (60%) is consumed at two Ergo dump retreatment plants. Historically the primary motivation for cyanide control at Ergo has been one of leach/cost optimization. However, more recently, with the increased public awareness of cyanide in the environment, a secondary but increasingly important motivation for control has been to ensure that only the minimum amount of cyanide is added to the process whilst not compromising leach performance. Following a brief overview of the Ergo process, the methodology in determining the amount of cyanide to be added is described. The paper then traces the developments in cyanide control from very basic manual systems to the current automated control system. In line with the increasingly sophisticated control systems, developments also took place in regards to the method of cyanide analysis. The development of these analysers is also discussed. Whilst cyanide is one of the major drivers, if not the major driver of gold dissolution, it cannot be viewed in isolation particularly with respect to the relationship between cyanide and oxygen as ascertained from the Elsner?s well-known equation. Consequently, in order to control cyanide addition, knowledge of the relative cyanide/oxygen profiles is necessary. Various means investigated at Ergo for pulp oxygenation have therefore been included for the sake of completeness. Finally a comparison is made of the control achieved from the current system compared to the original manual system. The knowledge and experience gained at Ergo is now being used to draw up guidelines for the installation and optimization work at the other AngloGold plants. The net effect of this will be reduced cyanide consumption for the region, which also, apart from the obvious economic benefit, translates into a reduced environ-mental risk.

Some applications of the model to improve screening operations, sizing of screen, simulation of screening and of integrated plant operations are discussed, and the computer software to be used for these purposes is described in detail.

Photometric sorting of ore on a South African gold mine by N. J. KEYS. B.E. Met. (Queensland) (Visitor). R. J. GORDON. (Visitor). And N. F. PEVERETT. B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits) (Fellow) This paper concerns the development and application of a high-throughput, multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

Aluminium AA1200 was laser alloyed with a combination of nickel and titanium diboride using different weight ratios. Chemical reactions took place with the formation of different phases. The characterization of the alloyed surfaces was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopes. The alloyed surfaces are composed of the initial phase of Al-Ni dendrites and eutectics of TiB2/Al and TiB2/Ni distributed on the initial phase. Experimental results obtained showed that Al-Ni intermetallics brought about a significant increase in the hardness property of Al; however, these intermetallics are highly brittle and prone to fail by brittle fracture or stress corrosion cracking when put in service. The addition of TiB2 brought about a reduction in the formation of the seintermetallic phases. A microhardness increase of over 10 times the hardness of the substrate was achieved. SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation
