Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted to determine the viability of the Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process in desulfurizing various coals from the midwestern coalfields. Nine coals obtained from western Kentucky and Illinois were used in the study. In addition to the Bureau's coal-pyrite flotation process, some of the coals were subjected to two-stage rougher-cleaner coal flotation for comparison. The results of this work showed that up to a 70-percent pyritic sulfur reduction could be obtained by flotation and that the Bureau's coal-pyrite flotation was superior to rougher-cleaner coal flotation. Because many of the coals retained far too much sulfur even after second-stage flotation treatment, it was concluded that these midwestern coals are more difficult to desulfurize by flotation than are the Appalachian coals tested in earlier Bureau experiments.

Abrasives are essential to the manufacture of munitions - airplanes, gas, shells, tanks, and in fact every product that involves metal forming or finishing. An indication of the importance of abrasives in the national defense and aid-to-Britain programs is the close peace-time correlation between demand for abrasives and automobile production, which in recent years has consumed more than 35 percent of the total output of abrasives. Unprecedented demands on the abrasives industry are forecast by the rapid expansion in airplane output, tie increased mechanization of all armed forces, and the consequent speeding up not only of the factories where finished munitions are made but also of the steel mills and other factories were additional large quantities of abrasives are needed for snagging or rough-grinding semifinished products before they can be used by the fabricators. A recent survey by the artificial abrasives manufacturers indicates that they can readily increase their output 75 percent compared with the previous peak of 1937 without building new plants. By overhauling production schedules, their maximum production possible could be increased to 182 percent of the 1937 output, and the nature of the industry is such that plant capacity could be increased rapidly if need therefor should arise. No figures on the estimated requirements for abrasives in 1941 or 1942 have as yet been compiled, but the industry feels that it can meet demands as they develop.

This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

The goal of this research was to adapt the highly successful rock borehole shear test for use in deep, small-diameter boreholes. Operating somewhat on the principle of a rock bolt, the borehole shear test measures both the expansion pressure and pulling force to give discrete measures of rock shearing strength as a function of the applied normal pressure. A new instrument was designed and built to fit into a 2-3/8 inch diameter hole. Unfortunately the design became so complicated, the operation is nut reliable. This is attributed to constraints of the small hole, and added requirements of an in-hole anchor to push against, and a rotating shear plate cleaner for repeated tests down-hole. A clue to the d: vice complexity is its length, which is over 10 feet. Furthermore it employs concentric cylinders and one hydraulic cylinder bored into the piston of another, or it would be even longer. Meanwhile drilling technology has advanced to greatly reduce costs of drilling 5- or 6-inch diameter holes. The downhole tester therefore should be redesigned and simplified for use in a larger diameter drill hole.

Information regarding the occurrence and severity of the accidents, the industries affected, the types of equipment involved, the primary and contributing causes, and pertinent Federal regulations is included. The aim of this report is to provide information that will aid mine operators in the recognition of hazards associated with mobile equipment operation near the dump points of stockpiles and waste dumps.

General In the present state of knowledge, all duets liberated in mining, tunneling and quarrying operations should be considered potentially injurious to health if breathed in sufficient quantity; dusts containing free silica should be considered specially injurious to health, the injurious particles being below 7 microns in diameter.

This Information Circular from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) documents and supplements the information presented in a series of workshops held during 2002 and 2003. The primary intended audience consists of all who are involved in developing and conducting miners' training. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers and independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property during the year 2000. Unfortunately, these workers have a relatively high risk of suffering serious work-related injuries and illnesses. The mining industry has the highest rate of occupational fatalities among all U.S. industries. The fatality rate is 30 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 4.6 for all private industry (Morbidity and Mortality Week Report, 2001; NIOSH, 2002). Compared to workers in other industries, miners also have a relatively high rate of nonfatal lost-time injuries, and their injuries tend to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1999). Many miners are also exposed to significant health hazards, including coal and silica dust, diesel exhaust, and noise. More than 1000 U.S. miners die of lung disease each year (NIOSH, 1999). Mine safety and health professionals have long recognized training as a critical element of an effective safety and health program. Federal regulations (30 CFR, Parts 46 and 48) require mine operators to provide initial safety and health training to all new miners, as well as a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training each year. The time and money being spent to train U.S. miners is substantial, and so there is a strong and steady demand for new and better mine training materials and methods. A growing concern among mine safety professionals regards the training of new workers. A major change in the mining workforce is anticipated within the next decade. In major segments of mining, especially coal, relatively few workers have been hired since the 1970's. Thus, as an entire cohort of miners in the current workforce nears retirement, the replacement of these employees will require an influx of new workers. New miners may be young people who lack the ability to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. Many safety professionals believe that these two cohorts require different approaches to training. The papers in this report should help prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaint them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training. The first three papers present basic principles for teaching adults. The five remaining papers are intended to illustrate how these principles can be applied to the development and imple¬mentation of effective training for miners. Below is an overview of these papers. 1. Kowalski and Vaught review the process and principles of adult learning. The learning model they present includes a discussion of goals, content, delivery, assessment, and remediation. Adults are viewed as active learners, experienced-based, expert in their own right in specific areas, independent, real-life centered, task-centered, problem-centered, solution-driven, skill-seeking, self-directing, and internally and externally motivated. Basic aspects of curriculum development are briefly reviewed. For further information about adult learning, see Camm and Cullen's paper. 2. Mallett and Reinke's first paper discusses issues related to training new miners who have recently or will soon be entering the mining workforce. These new generations of miners have different learning style preferences and training needs than Baby Boomers and other older miners. Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these young new workers. This paper provides information that will help mine trainers communicate across the generation gap. 3. Mallett and Reinke's second paper provide an overview of training evaluation. Trainers and decision-makers are given a framework for planning and assessing training evaluation strategies. The authors present Kirkpatrick's (2001) model of evaluation categories and discuss how to start an evaluation plan and various ways to collect data. They do not provide detailed instruction in evaluation methodologies, but give trainers a review of the things they need to consider when developing an evaluation plan. A good evaluation plan can inform revisions to a training course, assess trainee learning, and/or answer managers' questions about program effectiveness. 4. Brnich, Derick, Mallett, and Vaught discuss a technique for incorporating worker participation into fire prevention and safe equipment operation training. This technique involves development of short (5 to 7 minutes) videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner's workplace. An example of one of these training modules is presented, along with the results of an evaluation performed on its effectiveness at improving miners' understanding of what types of information they should be sure to communicate during a mine emergency. 5. Wiehagen, Conrad, Friend, and Rethi discuss on-the-job training (OJT) as a method for teaching miners safety and production skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper describes how small investments can help improve the effectiveness of on-the-job training. Effective on-the-job training involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. The operations were conducted in north-central Pennsylvania; an average of 600 linear feet of highwall were backfilled in each trial. This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle and Safety Guidelines developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, ?Improving Man Transit Safety. This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements are embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle Is presented In Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.

"Education is the one thing which is unanimously regarded as valuable. The growing complexity of modern life, with its intricate organization, the manifold kinds of mechanical equipment that are used, and the constantly growing, necessity for the speedy and accurate interchange of information and ideas, make education an asset that constantly increases in value. The number of things that may profitably be known has grown so large that the field of education has been divided, and attention is often directed to only those things that are most immediately valuable. Modern educational facilities are often directed to what may be called corrective, work; the, providing of people with information that they teed in the conduct of their daily lives, but which for various reasons they have not previously had facilities for acquiring. The value of special education in the industrial world has been so thoroughly demonstrated that far-seeing managers of mining enterprises are always interested in the educational facilities existing in the community where their work is carried on.The educational facilities of a modern community may be classified in several ways. They may be divided into;1. Facilities for general education, for the purpose of increasing the whole field of knowledge of the student.2. Facilities for special education, which are intended to remedy a specific defect, or to give proficiency in some special field. This may be divided as follows;a. Training for work, intended to fit an employee to adequately perform the task assigned to him, this ranges from brief instruction by a foreman or fellow-worker up to definite training courses in which the employee dose nothing but study for a period of several weeks or months, being paid during this period a wage that may range from a nominal amount up to practically full time salary. The student's educational preparation may already be fairly advanced. Some of the manufacturers of electric machinery maintain, a school similar to that just described for graduates of engineering colleges. In other cases the only pre-requisite may be a common school education, as in the schools for operators, maintained by the telephone companies."

Certain types of mobile surface mining equipment are required to be equipped with rollover protective structures (ROPS) capable of protecting the operator in case of a rollover accident. The Bureau of Mines has developed ROPS performance criteria for wheeled front-end loaders. This report reviews the development of rollover test procedures and subsequent testing of ROPS for 52,000-, 286,000-, and 390,000-lb gross vehicle weight (GVW) loaders. The program consisted of both dynamic (roll) and static tests to assist in the development of the ROPS performance criteria. Each test included extensive instrumentation and photographic documentation to fully evaluate the performance of the ROPS. Data summarizing side, longitudinal, and vertical force and deflections are included. The data indicate that for loaders in excess of 240,000 lb, GVW, a side force-to-mass ratio of 1.0 and an energy-to-mass ratio of 6.0 appear to be adequate criteria to protect an operator in the event of a 5400 rollover. For smaller machines, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 11040 performance criteria provide adequate protection. Longitudinal loading, though not ad-dressed in previous ROPS performance criteria, was shown to be a potentially significant factor in ROPS failure. Longitudinal loading and energy criteria equal to 80 pct of side loading criteria are recommended.

The effects of ultrasonic radiation on the electrodeposition of copper-zinc, copper-cadmium, and copper-tin alloys from cyanide baths were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at frequencies of 18.5 and 38 kilocycles per second, and at acoustic intensities up to 0.5 watt per cm3. Significant changes occurred in the composition of the deposited alloys; some of these deposits were brighter, harder, more adherent, or of finer grain size than nonirradiated deposits. The irradiated deposits were also smoother and less porous, and they afforded better corrosion protection for the substrate metal in sodium chloride solution. The limiting current densities of the cyanide baths were increased by the application of ultrasonics. Anode and cathode current efficiencies also were increased, and cell voltages were lowered; the relationship of these effects to current density is discussed. Electrode potential measurements showed significant depolarization effects at both electrodes during ultrasonic irradiation. The resulting decrease in cell voltage was due chiefly to depolarization at the anode, and the anode became less passive.

Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

This Bureau of Mines report describes photo lineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W -N 15° E, and N 57° W -N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W -N 20° E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W -N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

The Bureau of Mines devised a procedure for selectively extracting platinum-group metals (PGM) and gold from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrate. The Stillwater Complex is the only major U.S. PGM resource. Development of a suitable extraction technique will contribute to its exploitation. The concentrate was roasted at 1,050° C to convert host base-metal sulfides to oxides and the PGM from sulfide minerals to their elemental states. The roasted concentrate was preleached with dilute sulfuric acid to remove easily soluble gangue minerals. After pre-leaching, the concentrate was slurried with 6M HCI and leached at ambient temperature and pressure with a strong-oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid, and a persulfate salt were the oxidants investigated. The two-stage leaching scheme ex-tracted up to 97 pct of the platinum, 92 pct of the palladium, and 99 pct of the gold from the roasted concentrate. The base metals were not solubilized and reported to the residue. No attempt was made to devise a procedure to recover the copper and nickel because they comprise less than 5 pct of the value of the concentrate. Viable techniques for recovering the precious metals from the pregnant solution were sulfide precipitation, cementation with nickel, or adsorption on activated carbon.

The computer program has been developed in conjunction with the rest of the project to evaluate evacuation capabilities of the mines and develop guidelines for the escape systems. There are several problems associated with predicting evacuation performance of a mine. First, the mine has many interconnected passages, shafts, hoists and a number of miners in varying positions. To be able to predict evacuation time requires processing a hugh amount of data. A simplistic approach of determining the miner farthest from the exit and calculating evacuation time for him knowing his walking speeds and hoisting times is not realistic, since the waiting time for the hoist is neglected. The second problem is being able to repeat the calculations for a number of configurations. It may be possible to spend enough time to hand calculate the evacuation parameters for a single mine for a single configuration, but to evaluate capabilities of the evacuation

The first well that produced commercial quantities of oil in the Cook Inlet Basin of Alaska was completed in 1957. Since that time oil production in the basin has increased rapidly and by the end of 1969 had reached an annual rate of 74 million barrels. Five major oilfields had been developed, and two additional discoveries awaited development. Estimated amounts of recoverable oil by primary and secondary recovery methods total 2.7 billion barrels, or 36 percent of the estimated oil originally in place. Repressurization by injecting gas or water in formations containing undersaturated oil has significantly increased the volume of recoverable oil. All production has been from formations of the Tertiary age; that much of it is from depths of 10,000 feet or more is unusual for Tertiary formations. The oils are low in sulfur and contain low to moderate amounts of asphalt.

"INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Mallard study area near Elk City, Idaho. The study area comprises most of the original Mallard RARE II area (1-847) plus some additional lands. The investigation is part of an ongoing, multi-year study of north-central Idaho that is being conducted in cooperation with the Idaho Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The only identified resources are rock suitable for road metal. Five lode prospects and a pyrite-bearing rock quarry, which is operated by the Forest Service for aggregate, were examined for metals. One of the prospects warrants additional exploration for silver in quartz veins, but the chance of finding an economically minable deposit is limited. Several rock and stream sediment samples were anomalous in various metals. Two of the more promising localities for gold and/or other metals are adjacent to a unit of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness that the USGS classified as having a moderate potential for gold deposits related to fossil hot springs.
