An innovative mixed-chloride process for the separation of iron from lateritic ore is described. The separation of Fe(III) from leach liquor is an important process step for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. The patented process of Process Research ORTECH Inc. uses a lixiviant containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for the leaching of lateritic ores/concentrates followed by the selective solvent extraction step of Fe(III) over other value metals such as Ni and Co. The use of MgCl2 increases the activity of the hydrogen ion in the lixiviant, which reduces the consumption of HCl in the leaching stage and enhances the formation of HFeCl4-, thereby increasing the solvent extraction efficiency of Fe(III) with ketone. The process produces high purity iron oxide (Fe2O3) and regenerates HCl by the pyrohydrolysis of the FeCl3 rich pregnant strip solution. The developed process flowsheet is in closed loop, economically attractive and environmentally friendly.

"Corrosion monitoring is commonly used in a variety of industries as a means of effective corrosion control programs to extend the life of the asset and ensure safe operation of the facilities. The majority of the monitoring tools have limitations and tradeoffs – e.g., sacrificing the longevity of the probe for higher measurement resolution. Linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes have the advantage of providing the operator with accurate, real-time corrosion rate data; however, the probes can only be deployed in conditions where the measured environment possesses certain minimal conductivity. In many instances, utilization of LPR probes in conditions with intermittent wetting (for example, conditions where the temperature fluctuates above and below the dew point) presents a challenge. To address this limitation, a special-design cooled corrosion probe has been developed, commercialized and integrated into the distributed control system in the plants. In addition to high-accuracy measurement of corrosion rates, the probe allows for monitoring of pitting corrosion. The most innovative feature of the probe is the cooling circuit, which brings the temperature of the sensors below the dew point, forcing precipitation of moisture and thus permitting corrosion measurements. Additionally, the probe was found to be well-suited for monitoring corrosion in crude distillation unit (CDU) overhead space, where condensation of hydrochloric acid may take place at relatively high temperatures, which would require relatively moderate amount of cooling to be imparted to the probe sensors. This paper presents laboratory-based data from a test simulating CDU refinery environment. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the cooling probe can be effectively used in the plants for corrosion monitoring.INTRODUCTIONConventional corrosion-monitoring techniques such as weight-loss coupons to assess corrosion damage are commonly used in plants1. However, the use of coupons is not only labor-intensive, but also does not deliver real-time corrosion data, thus effectively serving as a “backwards-looking” monitoring tool. Kennecott Utah Copper Refinery and Outokumpu Technology have developed a wireless Electrolytic Cell Monitor (CellSensor) system to monitor cell voltage and temperature. The system is based on a robust self-organizing and self-healing wireless network with a very reliable redundant structure. The microprocessor controlled CellSensor device operates off a small amount of energy harvested from the cell bus and requires no external power source. The radio works in the 2.4 GHz international ISM band using robust Spread Spectrum technology. The CellSensor does not require end user calibration of either the voltage or temperature sensors and accuracy is superior to previous systems. The on-board computation power allows digital filtering of the cell voltage signal which results in very high quality data. The system requires much less maintenance than conventional hardwired systems and is intrinsically safer since no high voltage isolation is required. The advanced diagnostic functions allow the device to determine if the bus tap contact is degrading. The CellSensor can also be used for monitoring electrowinning (EW) cells for a variety of metals. CellSensor have been tested for over two years at the Kennecott Utah Copper and Boliden Harjavalta Pori refineries. The CellSensor system is now commercially available through Outokumpu Technology.

The success of a facility during an inspection depends on several factors including, the preparation prior to an inspection, behavior and activities during and inspection, and finally, action taken following the inspection. This paper contains suggestions for improving inspection results and establishing an attitude of compliance at manufacturing and mining facilities.

"A laboratory cell has been designed for a careful investigation of gold ore cyanidation using mathematical modelling of the process kinetics. The cell is a stirred vessel with continuous monitoring and control of pH, oxygen and free cyanide contents. Samples are automatically extracted for gold analysis. The instruments are connected to a microcomputer which records all the measured variables and calculates the reagent consumption (air or oxygen, cyanide, lime). For cyanide control a sample is automatically extracted and filtered and the solution analyzed, using a specific electrode, by a flow injection technique. The rate of gold dissolution is modelled using a kinetic model the parameters of which are calculated by a non linear least-squares technique. The parameters of an empirical model of reagent consumption are also estimated. The resulting model is used in a simulator for gold cyanidation plant design, tuning and control.INTRODUCTIONThe leaching of gold ores in a cyanide solution is the usual method for gold extraction from raw ores. This process requires long reaction times and leads to very significant consumption of cyanide. The optimization of the cyanidation plant operation is a very important aspect of gold ore processing for increasing gold recovery and decreasing operating costs. The key parameters to the improvement of gold extraction are the selection of an efficient solution chemistry, the design of the size and the arrangement of the equipment and the correct tuning of the operating variables. Automatic control strategies can then be applied to maintain industrial operations at their optimum setpoints.Two approaches can be used for optimizing design and control of cyanidation circuits, either empirical trials for improving process performances or mathematical modelling of the process kinetics for subsequent analysis, simulation and optimization. The advantages of the second approach, which is used in this study, is that it gives a systematic pattern to interpret data and reliable tools, in as much as the models are good, to improve operation performances. In order to determine the structure and the coefficients of cyanidation models, well controlled measurement and calibration procedures must be used. The purpose of the paper is to present an equipment and a test procedure for modelling the kinetics of gold ore cyanidation."

"Abstract - As an integral part of the Geological Survey of Canada’s EXTECH III Project, a threedimensional computer model has been created of the Con and Giant gold mines in the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. The Yellowknife Mining Camp has produced a great deal of gold (over 15 million ounces, or 400 000 kg) in the past sixty years and the prevailing assumption is that the mines are at the end of their lives. However, the potential for discovering additional resources using new ideas and technology, and maximizing use of existing data, offers an opportunity to sustain the old mining operations and maintain their contribution to the community.The objectives of this study included the compilation and creation of a three-dimensional Geographic Information System model (combining 3D subsurface data with surface information) to provide a framework for concurrent structural and alteration studies, and to encourage new exploration in the area. A secondary objective was to retain the data in digital format as a historical reference for future remediation efforts, and to document a portion of Canada’s rich mining history.The end result is a database and set of models that have been instrumental in facilitating further exploration in the area, as well as in developing targets for future exploration and mining activities. In addition, the EXTECH III 3D GIS model has made a valuable contribution toward the understanding of the arsenic remediation issues at the Giant mine, and has served as a tool in support of a variety of highly technical engineering studies and for communicating information and problems to the layman and community as a whole."

Heavy metal contamination from mining and metallurgical activities of aquatic systems poses significant risk to the environment and human populations. The investigation of the distribution and immobilization mechanisms of heavy metals in sediments and soils has recently attained high priority. Different remediation methods can be employed to suppress or eliminate these contaminants. A tailored approach using both commercially available and in-house made adsorbents to rem ediate a heavy metal contamination site due to historical metallurgical activities in north Belgium is studied in this paper.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

"The revamp of critical process assets that require a significant plant outage (shutdown) presents a unique and demanding set of challenges for plant operators. They are executed in a more complex Brownfield environment, typically with limited working space and often involve unknown conditions or scope. For plant operators, such a project is often a high cost event both in terms of opportunity cost of lost production and the resource cost of labor and materials. It can also be a high risk event in terms safety, environment, and future plant reliability/availability. This impacts current and future performance or Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our experience, the sequential nature of the EPCM approach does not provide the proper framework to facilitate the level of coordination, stakeholder cooperation and detailed planning required to adequately address the construction and shutdown complexity of a critical asset revamp projects. This paper proposes a more integrated approach to handling shutdown revamps of critical assets. Its main thesis is to involve the key performing stakeholder groups early in the project lifecycle (engineering team, procurement team, construction team and plant operations) to form an integrated shutdown management team that is focused on ensuring delivered results are aligned with project objectives. In this model, the construction team executing the shutdown/construction is preparing the detailed shutdown/construction planning concurrently with detailed engineering and procurement planning. This allows construction/shutdown requirements to influence engineering and procurement, with the desire to optimize safety, speed, quality and cost. The paper also discusses how to overcome the procurement hurdle in applying such an approach. The outcome of this integrated approach is better planning, coordination, communication and alignment between the project stakeholders, a shutdown/construction driven planning approach that more fully addresses the challenges of these projects and delivered results that are aligned with project objectives."

"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimisation, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterise cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, fioth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimisation of the Red Dog flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the rule-of-thumb with safety factors, dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations, etc. With the recent trend towards larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-of-thumb and trial-and-error, then the probability of failure would increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."

"In flotation research, relatively little attention has been paid to understanding particle-bubble detachment phenomena compared with attachment processes. With CFD models now incorporating attachment/detachment kinetics, it is important to obtain more accurate formulations for detachment probability. The formula most often used is due to Bloom and Heindel (2002) who proposed that the rate of detachment would equal the product of detachment frequency, as previously estimated by other authors, and probability of destabilization, as estimated previously by Schulze. These two factors both account for the balance between stabilization and destabilization forces, so the product accounts for this effect twice. An integrated procedure has been followed to estimate the overall detachment rate by re-analysing the process. In this analysis, detachment rate is calculated as the frequency of eddy-aggregate interactions (or “collisions”) sufficiently energetic to cause detachment. The Bond number analysis of Schulze has been incorporated into the turbulence frequency analysis of previous authors in an integrated way. The new formulation has essentially the same type of dependencies as the previous model, but gives a lower detachment frequency. Detachment frequency has been calculated using the new formula for conditions relevant to an industrial flotation cell. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the effectiveness of froth flotation for separating different minerals is limited to the particle size range of approximately 10–100 mm (Trahar & Warren, 1976; Trahar, 1981). Fine particles tend to follow fluid streamlines around bubbles limiting the likelihood of bubble–particle collision, while coarse particles can be more easily detached from bubbles before collection can be achieved.Phenomenological models have been developed to quantify the physico-chemical aspects of flotation in order to better understand factors affecting these limitations, and to suggest ways of broadening the window of feasible flotation. Koh and Schwarz (2008) have incorporated these models into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of flotation cells, which have then been used for design and scale-up purposes (Schwarz et al., 2015). The models are based on dividing the process of bubble–particle interaction into three subprocesses: collision, adhesion and detachment. Of these, the hydrodynamics of bubble–particle collision and the probability of adhesion have been studied most extensively, while the dynamics of detachment have received relatively little attention from investigators."

"There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. "Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online CIP/CIL simulation model called SIMCIL which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc.) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. "For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

Open pit optimization forms the basis of mine design, production planning and construction of mine facilities. The negative effects of this phase may include substantial reductions in ore recoveries, relocation of waste dumps and surface infrastructure, extraction of unwanted waste, with a cumulative effect on mine value reductions. As a result, this area has received significant research focus using linear and dynamic programming, heuristic, genetic and stimulation algorithms and the graph theory. These algorithms are derived from rigorous mathematical models, but they are built on the assumption that all the periodic production capacities are extracted at the time of analysis. This assumption weakens the models because mining occurs over significant time period. In order to develop a comprehensive model that accounts for the timing of material extraction, the current models, which are built on the economic block value (EBV) concept, must be modified to account for time. In this paper, the authors develop a model of the optimization problem using the 2-D Lerchs-Grossmann?s optimization algorithm. This model is used to investigate the effect of periodic discounting on the optimal pit layout design by designing an integrated pit optimiser (IPO) that incorporates ?production scheduling?. IPO uses the ensuing discounted economic block value (DEBV) as a basis for the pit optimisation process. The time-dependent model is compared with a time-independent model. The results show that discounting has no effect on the optimal pit contour although the reported pit value is overstated if the EBVs are used instead of the DEBV. The authors, however, believe that this conclusion may not be general and could have been influenced by the nature of ore body geometry and the proposed mining strategy.

"This paper describes development of an integrated chloride process for separation and purification of REEs. The process includes atmospheric leaching of ore/concentrate with mixed chloride lixiviant containing HCl and MgCl2 followed by bulk recovery of REEs, dissolution of the bulk intermediate product, and separation of individual REEs by solvent extraction (SX) process steps. Mixed chloride leaching technology provides the opportunity to regenerate the lixiviant, while the addition of MgCl2 in HCl enhances the hydrogen ion activity by orders of magnitude increasing REE extraction efficiency at a lower concentration of HCl. An individual REE separation process developed by Innovation Metals Corp. is being piloted at a state-of-the-art facility at Process Research ORTECH Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The SX process includes the separation of light REEs (La – Nd), medium REEs (Sm – Gd) and heavy REEs (Tb – Lu plus Y) from leach liquor followed by individual REE separation. Each SX circuit proceeds by multistage extraction followed by scrubbing and stripping. The process is chloride based and reagents are recycled, reducing waste generation and optimizing water usage to reduce environmental impact.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (La to Lu plus Y) exhibit a range of unique magnetic, electronic, catalytic and optical properties. Due to these special properties, the application of REEs is increasing and they are found in components for wind power generation, hybrid electric cars, catalytic converters, and many electronic devices.Rare earth elements (REEs) are commonly divided in two groups: light rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). Light rare earth elements include elements from lanthanum (La) to neodymium (Nd). Although promethium (Pm) is considered an LREE it is unstable and scarcely occurs in nature and is generally excluded. Heavy rare earth elements include elements from samarium (Sm) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium. Although rare earth elements are not rare and the rare earth oxides are scattered around the globe, over 95% of REEs+Y are currently produced in China (Pitts, 2011). On one hand the Chinese government is restricting the export of rare earth elements and on the other hand the demand for REEs+Y is increasing in the rest of the world. This has created an imbalance in the supply and demand of rare earth elements and has led to a rush for developing new rare earth projects."

Addressing deficiencies and defects that occur during construction projects is costly and time consuming. The manual quality assurance programs currently used in the industry have certain limitations, including human error and lack of consistency. Hence, there is a need for integrated electronic models that employ new technologies and methods. This research introduces an integrated construction quality control system that has the potential to improve quality management processes in the construction field for piping construction, which is a complex process often requiring rework. The proposed integrated system relies on data collected from construction sites using photogrammetry and laser scanning, which is then used to compare actual work performed to that designed. The proposed system aims to improve the promptness and accuracy of quality assurance processes, in particular dimension measurements, by avoiding human error and integrating defect detection and quality management. The use of this system has highlighted some of the limitations during data fusion and acquisition process, which are highlighted in this paper. These aspects must be considered to increase the reliability of the acquired information.

Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change.
