High chromium white irons can be formulated to provide required combinations of abrasion and erosion wear resistance, toughness and capability to withstand corrosion attack. As a consequence, they are used widely in casting form throughout the mining/mineral processing industry, particularly as components for slurry pumps and also as mill and crusher liners, laminated wear plates in chutes and hoppers and in valves, nozzles and cyclones. Traditional cast chromium molybdenum and high chromium white irons for wear applications are covered in ASTM A532 Classes 11 and 111 and are also available as comparable proprietary alloys. They rely on heat-treated, hypoeutectic microstructures containing a high volume fraction of very hard eutectic/secondary metal carbides and martensite to provide extremely high wear resistance. The ability to increase the carbide volume fraction and hence achieve higher wear resistance, has been limited because of severe casting difficulties encountered when carbon and chromium contents are raised and hypereutectic alloys with structures also containing coarse acicular primary metal carbides are produced. The limitation has been overcome and cast hypereutectic chromium white iron pump components have established themselves in a wide variety of mineral processing service applications. Comparisons will be made between the microstructures and wear test performance data for the various alloy types and details will be provided of the service performance improvements that have been achieved through the use of hypereutectic chromium white irons.

"Los Bronces had two ROM dump leach operations designated Leach I and Leach II. Leach I was commissioned in 1998 and stopped in 2014 due to the mine requirements. Leach II plant, commissioned in early 2002, was built to treat around 700 million tons of marginal ROM ore averaging 0.45 % total copper. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides.The original electrowinning plant design capacity for copper production was nominal 19,500 tonnes per year at a current density of 276 A/m2 and a current efficiency of 92%. Presently, Los Bronces San Francisco plant typically operates at current densities between 390 and 440 A/m2, much higher than the average in the industry, with current efficiencies around 93% and a maximum copper cathodes production of 37,200 tonnes per year.In order to accomplish these achievements, a number of modifications in the process conditions, in the cell hardware and in the operational procedures have been implemented. In the first case, the specific flowrate, copper concentration and temperature of the electrolyte were modified to accommodate the operational requirements facilitating the increased current density. Associated with the cell hardware, a six cells expansion was added, upgraded equipotential inner cell busbars were installed and the cross section of the cathode hanger bars was enlarged for increased current carrying capacity. Documented operational procedures like short circuit detection and cathode weight control were improved.The modifications implemented and the results obtained are discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONLos Bronces Division of Anglo American Chile is located up in the Andes Mountains, northeast of Santiago. It had two cathode plants, Los Bronces at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) commissioned in 1998 and closed in 2014 and San Francisco at an altitude of 2800 m.a.s.l. and in operation since 2002.The process is leaching run off mine (ROM) low grade copper sulphide ore in dumps. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides. The average grade is 0.45% total copper (Cut).At Los Bronces dump, Leach I plant, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was collected and stored in an underground reservoir. From there, it was fed to a solvent extraction plant with a series-parallel configuration in two extraction stages and one stripping stage. The electrolyte produced was fed to the electrowinning plant having 30 cells and 60 cathodes per cell. Maximum capacity of this plant was 12,000 tonnes per year (tpy)."

The cathode production of Toyo Smelter and Refinery, owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses. Niihama tank house commenced operations in 1919 with conventional sheet cathode technology. Approximately 100 years of operation experience and the technical development enabled that the current density of Niihama tank house and the Toyo tank house #1 increased to 320 A/m2. These operation techniques were utilized at the Toyo tank house #2 which started in 2005, and its current density reached up to 350 A/m2 with permanent cathode technology. In order to achieve high current efficiency under condition of 350 A/m2 operation at Toyo tank house #2, continued efforts had been made to verticality of anodes and permanent cathodes. To improve verticality of anodes and cathodes, reduction of short circuit ratio by changing the shape of the anode, optimizing the anode pressing machine and off-line process for rectifying the distortion of permanent cathodes was carried out. In addition, concentration control of electrolyte and expansion of Ni removing ability from the electrolyte prevented passivation. Finally, more than 96% of the current efficiency was stably confirmed. INTRODUCTION Today, Toyo Smelter and Refinery of Sumitomo Metal Mining operates three tank houses in Japan, namely, Toyo tank house #1, Toyo tank house #2, and Niihama tank house with a total capacity of 450,000 metric tons of copper cathodes. Figure 1 shows the trend of cathode copper production and the current density at three tank houses over the last 10 years. Cathode production by Toyo Smelter and Refinery reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses.

This paper presents the High Current Density (HCD) Silver Electrorefining Process. A 25-year history of development of the silver electrorefining process as well as associated equipment is given. The process is simple and robust, but at the same time highly automated. With low operating costs and man power requirement it allows consistent production of 99.99 % quality cathode silver. The process ensures that no toxic gases are formed in the working environment. Silver Electrorefining is a heart of a Silver Refinery plant covering the complete range of processes from casting of silver Doré anodes to casting of the bars of refined silver or/and silver granulation. The process has been successfully applied at 11 installations world-wide with plant capacities ranging from 30 to 1500 tpa.

Air cooled crackable and conventional forged steel specimens were tested under reversed push-pull conditions to examine the effect of shot-peening on their high cycle fatigue behaviour (-106 cycles). The steels were tested in the normalized as well as shot-peened conditions. The results showed that shot-peening smooth specimens had little effect on the fatigue limit of the air cooled forged steels and the detrimental effect of the rougher peened surface was not apparent. Microhardness profiles indicated that the shot peening produced a gradient of compressive residual stresses that was greater than that of the loading stresses, suppressing the anticipated beneficial effect on fatigue life. Crack initiation was more likely to occur below the surface. The results indicate that the surface roughness was not a significant factor in controlling the fatigue lives, since they were essentially the same for the non shot-peened and shot-peened steels.

The European Guideline ETAG 027 - 2008 (?Guideline for European Technical Approval of Falling Rock Protection Kits?) defines the procedures to test rock fall barriers. Nowadays, this guideline is essentially the only test and construction framework utilized by manufacturers and it is also starting to enter in the mentality of designer who can clearly specify the performances of rockfall barriers. ETAG 27 (and the related European Technical Approval and the CE marking) represents a milestone for the rockfall barrier market, because it gives the possibility to compare the performances of different fences and it ensures the quality of the certified product. For these reasons ETAG 27 presently constitutes the base for tenders all around the world. Although rockfall barriers are in common use, designers and consultants do not have a clear overview of the real performances and the technological limits of these structures. The first problem can be solved using ETAG 27 criteria, which allow designing rockfall barriers at ultimate and serviceability limit state. Even though ETAG 27 uses crash tests performed with the Service Energy Level (SEL) and Maximum Energy Level (MEL), design with these concepts is not obvious or in common acceptance. Some preliminary questions must be solved. When can these energy levels be correctly applied? In the case of rockfall simulations, what probabilistic approach must be used for the evaluation of the barrier? Unfortunately ETAG 27 does not give any information or tests relating to the technological limits of the fences. Therefore some important questions arise. How do the site specific aspects of installation affect the barrier performance? What is the behaviour of the barriers under extreme conditions? And finally, the main question lies in the background: what is the functional reliability of ETAG 27? All of the above questions require comprehensive answers, which is consistent with the experience of designers, installers and producers. "High Fidelity Simulation is a name applied to the use of first principles modeling tools including Discrete Element Modeling (DEM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Grain Breakage (DGB) to mathematically describe and study processing systems. Over the past few years, significant advances have been made in High Fidelity Simulation applications, particularly as many mineral processors have been drawn to the study and use of DEM of grinding mills for optimization purposes. This presentation provides an introduction to High Fidelity Simulation, with an emphasis on DEM. It will include insights into current applications of these tools including the optimal design (wear and throughput) of mill lining systems and media selection, the analysis and design (flow and efficiency) of the back-end of grate discharge mills. Advantages of full mill simulations versus individual sub-process simulations will be demonstrated for a SAG mill with different discharge system designs.INTRODUCTIONHigh Fidelity Simulation is providing mineral processors with the opportunity to analyze the behavior of mineral processing equipment from a fundamental or microscale point of view. In the past complex phenomena such as tumbling mill grinding had to be analyzed using black box tools such as residence time distributions for transport and classification functions for passage of particles through grates; while breakage had to be analyzed using PBM models who derived their form from theory but required direct measurement of kinetics. Today with the help of DEM, CFD and DGB these can be analyzed at a very fundamental level.The key element of DEM simulation is the application of Newton’s laws of motion to individual objects or discrete elements. Using this simulation method one can describe the position, velocity (both translational and rotational) of all objects and the transfer of momentum to other objects (Mishra and Rajamani, 1992; Cleary, 1998; Nordell et al, 2001)."

The future development of nickel laterite deposits is crucial with regards to satisfying impending nickel demands. The commercial implementation of new hydro/pyrometallurgical processes in recent years has led to significant improvements in the extraction of nickel from the laterite ores. One potential alternative pyrometallurgical processing route would be to selectively reduce the nickel and produce a concentrate with nickel contents similar to those attainable in the conventional flotation of sulphide ores. However, even bench scale studies have not yet been able to produce a high grade (>15% nickel) concentrate from a low grade laterite ore. The present research involved the microwave vacuum reduction roasting of a nickel laterite ore to yield a high grade concentrate, rich in nickel. Firstly, the effects of temperature and pressure on the nickel grade and recovery were investigated using a thermodynamic model. Secondly, briquettes containing a mixture of charcoal and a low grade silicate nickel laterite ore were reacted in a microwave vacuum system. The experimental variables studied were the input microwave energy, pressure and absorbed microwave power. Thirdly, the ferronickel in the reacted briquette was concentrated by magnetic separation and nickel grades of up to 21% could be achieved.

The Est Malartic mill has been treating massive sulphide, copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine since 1989. The need to minimize copper content in flotation tails which are leached for gold recovery and to produce a saleable copper concentrate led to the evaluation of Conventional, Column and HG flotation methods. The HG method was preferred and two full-scale cells were installed and operated over a two-year span. In 1992, it was decided to expand the mill capacity from 1500 tpd to 2500 tpd. A total of nine additional HG Tank Cells were installed to provide additional roughing and cleaning capacity. The expanded plant has been operating since June 1993.

"Peñoles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world’s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Peñoles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process,particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit is reviewed ,specifying process improvements to treat high iron calcines.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of the leaching process is to recover the metals, mainly zinc,through a series of extraction stages with sulphuric acid solutions, which progressively increase the zinc recovery. After the series of acidification stages,the solution, which is rich in iron, is sent to the jarosite circuit to separate the zinc from the iron (Garcia & Valdez, 1996).The first step of the leaching process is the neutral leach circuit which produces a zinc sulphate solution that is sent to the purification section for the removal of impurities such as cadmium, cobalt and copper, after this solution is sent to the tankhouse to feed the electrolytic cells."

Cu–Ti alloy wires doped with and without a small amount of Ni were fabricated by over-aging and using intense drawing procedures. For both the Cu–Ti alloys with and without Ni doping, the over- aged microstructure was occupied fully with a coarse lamella of Cu solid solution and β-Cu4Ti plates precipitated discontinuously by grain boundary reactions. The full-lamellar microstructure was developed much more rapidly by aging in multi steps at 873 K to 723 K rather than by isothermal aging at 723 K. Ni doping in Cu-Ti alloy was also effective to accelerate the formation of the lamellar microstructure. When drawing the over-aged alloy with inferior hardness but superior electrical conductivity, the strength increased steadily and eventually exceeded that for the wires drawn from the peak-aged alloy. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the wires drawn from the over-aged alloy was always much greater than that from the peak-aged alloy. Eventually, the procedure of over-aging, followed by intense drawing, could enhance both the strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Ti alloys, whichever they contain a small amount of Ni or not, rather than the conventional peak-aging and drawing process. INTRODUCTION Cu-based alloy wires, which have an excellent combination of strength and electrical conductivity, have attracted extensive attention for highly mechanically stressed electrical devices, such as conductive lead wires and wires in suspension springs. Cu-Be alloys are widely used for such electrical components owing to their combination of strength and electrical conductivity among industrial Cu-based alloys. However, since beryllium is potentially toxic and also a rare element, substitute materials for Cu-Be alloys have been searched for several decades. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti based alloys have been proposed as candidates because their mechanical and physical properties are comparable to those of Cu-Be alloys; however, their electrical conductivity is inferior (Datta & Soffa, 1976; Soffa & Laughlin, 2004). In order to satisfy the requirement of downsizing and streamlining electrical devices, further improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of Cu–Ti alloy wires is needed. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti alloys, which contain approximately 3 to 6 at.% Ti, are typically prepared using a solid solution treatment above 1100 K and then aging at a moderate temperature of 700 K to 800 K. It has been revealed that the microstructural events during aging progress as follows (Soffa & Laughlin, 2004): (1) compositional modulation of the parent supersaturated Cu solid solution in an initial aging stage (Laughlin & Cahn, 1975), (2) continuous nucleation and growth of fine needle-shaped precipitates of metastable β’-Cu4Ti with a tetragonal structure in a peak-aged stage, and (3) discontinuous precipitation of cellular components laminating the plates of a terminal Cu solid solution and stable β-Cu4Ti with an orthorhombic structure at the grain boundaries in an over-aging stage. It has been also accepted that the highest number density of dispersed fine β’-Cu4Ti needles should contribute to maximal strengthening. On the other hand, decease of the strength in the over-aging stage occurs due to the replacement of the fine β’- Cu4Ti needles with cellular components containing coarse β-Cu4Ti plates, while the electrical conductivity is significantly enhanced due to the depletion of solute Ti in the Cu matrix. This suggests that a combination of strength and electrical conductivity for age-hardenable Cu-Ti alloys is in a trade-off relationship, and that innovative improvement of both properties might be limited to tuning the aging conditions.

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of the typical steel wire ropes used for mine hoisting. Steel wire ropes possess properties making them very suitable for mine hoisting including high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of being relatively heavy in comparison with their strength. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio of synthetic ropes compared with steel ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application, including rope discard methodology and NDT testing. The three phases/projects are: 1) proof of concept with focus on coilability under load (successfully completed in 2012); 2) high speed and load durability optimization & NDT Development; and 3) in-situ mine trial.

Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13 percent of Canada?s total oil requirements. To do this, Syncrude mines the oil sand in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB) is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States. As parts of the Mildred Lake Base Mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12, and 34, 35 kilometres northeast of the Mildred Lake facility. (Figure 1) In 2000 the first hydrotransport low energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320 ton to 380 ton payload capacities.

The ore is then transferred by conveyor to a surge pile and then to a mixing box which combines the oil sands with hot water. Following bitumen separation in the primary separation vessel, froth is delivered to Mildred Lake for processing via the intersite pipeline (Fig. 3).The goal of this paper is to illustrate how high precision shovel GPS (HPGPS) is being used at the Aurora mine to aid in mine planning. This can be accomplished by first describing the function of the mine planning department, describing the Aurora orebody, and finally explaining how the HPGPS system functions and how it is employed at Aurora.The short range mine planning department ensures a steady supply of ore is delivered to the plant at the desired grade in a sequenced and economical manner. This is done by creating a mine plan that consists of shovel dig locations that require the shovels to mine in a specified area at a specified elevation."

The North American mining industry faces challenging emissions regulations in coming years with the introduction of new standards for off-road diesel engines. In order to remain competitive, industry stakeholders must invest in new technologies that are economically and environmentally sustainable. Westport Innovations Inc., of Vancouver B.C. has developed high pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology that allows diesel engines to run primarily on natural gas with no intrusive engine modifications, reduced emissions of NOx, PM, and CO2, with no loss in performance. This is accomplished through late-cycle high-pressure injection of natural gas directly into a diesel engine combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke. A small amount of diesel fuel is injected first to initiate combustion, followed by the main natural gas fuel injection. The diesel cycle and its operating characteristics are fully retained including high combustion efficiency, low speed torque, high-power output, no engine knock and fast response to load changes. Natural gas has not been an attractive fuel alternative in mining operations due to reduced performance associated with spark ignition engines and the added weight and space required for compressed natural gas tanks. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be stored in a similar manner and volume to diesel fuel by virtue of its increased energy density over compressed natural gas. Cummins, Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport have formed a joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI), under which agreement the HPDI technology is being applied to a Cummins QSK engine series for high horsepower applications such as mine haul trucking. CWI, along with Komatsu Mining Systems, ENRG Fuels, Placer Dome, and Cortez Joint Venture are performing a feasibility study for the development and demonstration of an LNGfueled HPDI QSK engine in a large mine haul truck. The goal would be to demonstrate low emissions consistent with EPA ?Blue Sky? standards, high efficiency based on HPDI technology and good economics resulting from the high fuel consumption of 2,000+ hp trucks.

"The Lone Tree demonstration was an important milestone in bringing High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology into hard rock applications in the mining industry. HPGRs have become standard equipment in the cement, iron ore, and diamond industries over the past fifteen years, but their use in severe duties found in the hard rock mining sector has been restricted due to high roll wear and subsequent low availability. HPGR availability has historically been limited because of frequent downtime for edge weld rebuilding as the rolls wore and short tyre life from high roll surface wear rates.Recent advancements in HPGR wear protection are now being evaluated for commercial applications in the gold and copper mining industry where this technology may offer benefits in comminuting hard and/or abrasive ores and in improving metal recovery in heap leaching applications.Proving the feasibility of HPGRs for processing competent, abrasive gold ore, Newmont Mining Corporation, the world's largest gold producer, operated an HPGR demonstration plant employing a POLYSIUS (POLYCOM) HPGR incorporating some unique wear protection, at their Lone Tree gold mine near Winnemucca, Nevada. Results of the successful demonstration are presented and evaluated in this paper.The Lone Tree HPGR demonstration plant operated for three months, from April through June 2003. The HPGR operated for 1626 hours and processed 141,000 tons of ore. This technology demonstration focused on measuring operating performance, wear characteristics, and availability of today's HPGR technology.Polysius' innovative roll surface wear protection system eliminated edge-welding downtime. Improved surface wear protection extended tyre life to predicted durations acceptable for very abrasive service. The POLYCOM HPGR is now deemed suitable for selected hard rock applications."

The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). "Washing can be defined as the process used to eliminate or reduce the dirt (presence of fines or slimes) of one material. It is also the basic and oldest process applied to ore preparation for further concentration. This process, in combination with commnution and screening, form the so called washing plant and in many cases produce end products. This work describes the factors that influence the performance of the washing process and main washing technologies used in the mineral processing industry.The Hydro-Clean represents, since 1998, a state of the art technology in this area and is comprised of one of the most innovative solutions developed at HAVER & BOECKER. HAVER & BOECKER design and manufacture technology for mining and related industries. Today the Hydro-Clean is manufactured and sold throughout the Haver Screening Group (HSG) which is comprised of HAVER & BOECKER Maschinenfabrik Münster, HAVER & BOECKER Latinoamericana – Brazil and W.S. Tyler Canada.The Hydro-Clean is a washing technology based on utilization of high pressure water jets. To follow we will discuss how the Hydro-Clean’s different modes of operation result in several advantages related with mine waste reduction, recovery of saleable product, lower capital costs, superior washing results, less stress for the material, a wider range of application and less maintenance cost. Aside from these positive factors, its lower operation costs related to the consumption of energy and water are presented.
