"The Scheelite Dome tungsten-bearing skarn property, central Yukon Territory, is in metasediments in contact with a quartz monzonite intrusion. Contact metamorphism to biotite-muscovite- andalusite hornfels and calc-silicate hornfels is superimposed on low-grade regionally metamorphosed rocks represented by quartz-mica pelitic schist and muscovite-biotite pelitic schist.Metasediments are likely Precambrian in age, even though Rb-Sr whole-rock analyses indicate an early Paleozoic age (511±41 Ma); this apparently too young radiometric age is due to partial loss of radiogenic strontium during regional metamorphism. The minimum age of the quartz monzonite intrusion is Cretaceous at 90.4±2.6 Ma (K-Ar on biotite) and its initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio is 0.7121. The high initial ratio of the intrusion is due to the addition of radiogenic strontium from the metasedimentary country rocks and perhaps an underlying older basement.Scheelite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite mineralization occurs in diopside-zoisite skarn pods within the calc-silicate hornfels near the quartz monzonite intrusion. The source for lithophile tungsten is probably the same as for the granitic magma, namely Precambrian sialic basement.IntroductionThe Scheelite Dome tungsten skarn property is within the Mc-Questen map-area (NTS: 115P/16),28 km northwest of Mayo, Y.T., at latitude 63°47' north and longitude 136°15' west. The property can be reached by helicopter or by four-wheel- drive vehicle from Mayo.This paper summarizes the geology of the Scheelite Dome property, which has been described in a general way by Little (1959) and Cathro (1969). Geological mapping and sampling were done by the first author (nee Steffler) during June 1979. Field work was supplemented with detailed work at the Department of Geological Sciences of The University of British Columbia during 1979 and 1980 (Steffler, 1980). Whole-rock chemical analyses were done by Cominco Ltd."

"The mid-Cretaceous Seagull batholith intruded Mississippian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and Jurassic(?) granitic and ultramafic rocks within the Omineca Crystalline Belt in the Yuk on Territory near the British Columbia boundary. Leucoerotic fluorine- and boron-rich granites of the batholith exhibit many textural variations from aplite to pegmatite, but are dominated by a coarse-grained seriate unit and a fine-grained porphyritic unit.Four distinctive tin vein occurrences within and near the batholith are described, the most interesting of which is the MC showing of quartz-calcite-chlorite-cassiterite veins in intensely fractured zones of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three other showings occur within the batholith:J) the EC showing of quartz-fluorite-cassiterite-sulphide veins with prominent muscovite-illite alteration;2) the DU showing of quartz-hematite-fluorite-sulphide- sulphide-cassiterite with considerable manganese staining and sericitic alteration; and3) the VAL showing of quartz-tourmaline-cassiterite-fluorite-arsenopyrite veins with little associated alteration.Most cassiterite occurrences are within easterly-trending, vertical structures and all occurrences are thought to represent parts of a single system. These mineralogical and physical variations are apparently related to the distance from the upper contact of the batholith.For the Seagull batholith, Rb-Sr isotopic data give a 100±1.4 Ma isochron age that is concordant with the K-Ar model age from biotite of 101±4 Ma. Initial Sr isotopic ratios for the batholith are high at 0.712, indicating an old, sialic crustal source for this pluton. This initial ratio is similar to values for granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits in the Yukon Territory. The high initial ratio for Sr, the high Si02 content, the high s/I index, the presence of normative corundum. leucogranitic composition and associated lithophile-tungsten mineralization demonstrate that the Seagull batholith is probably an S-type granitic body. This factor is significant to regional exploration jar tin and tungsten in the Canadian Cordillera."

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

"IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). Table 1 summarizes the stratigraphic features as deduced by geological mapping and the examination of drill cores."

"Onakawana Development Ltd. and Mana/ta Coal Ltd. have completed feasibility studies on a large lignite deposit located in the James Bay lowlands of northeastern Ontario. The mining plan described in this paper would supply coal for approximately a 33-year period with peak production in the early years of approximately 6.5 million tonnes per year then declining to 1.2 million tonnes in year 33. This paper describes the geology, resources, lignite quality, mine planning and related topics. LocationThe Onakawana lignite deposit is located in northeastern Ontario in the James Bay lowlands (Fig. l). The Ontario Northland Railway crosses the property and links it to Moosonee, JOO km further north, and Cochrane 180 km south. The area is crossed by latitude 50° 37', the approximate latitude of Calgary. Toronto lies 800 km south of the study area. History of Development The deposit has been known since the late 1600s when early English settlers extracted limited amounts of lignite for use at Moose Factory. The deposit has undergone sporadic periods of exploration activity in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Ontario government drilled 116 holes, sunk two exploration shafts and published several technical and economic studies. Interest in the property was reactivated from 1939 to 1945 when the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Ltd. drilled 182 additional closely spaced holes, excavated a test pit adjacent to the rail line and installed a boiler for testing purposes. In 1965, Alberta Coal Ltd., the predecessor of Manalta Coal Ltd., first became involved. Since then a further 182 holes have been drilled and coied, and the existing test pit reopened for sampling. In 1980, various reassessment studies were launched, including geology, mine engineering, conceptual design and environmental assessment studies. The Red Dog sediment-hosted zinc-lead deposit is located in the Brooks Range thrust belt in northwest Alaska, approximately 1000 km northwest of Anchorage. The mine constitutes the primary deposit in a 400 square kilometre district, which hosts several other mineral occurrences. All the known mineralisation is hosted by the Mississippian Ikalukrok Member, deep basinal shale of the Kuna Formation, part of a Devonian to Cretaceous sedimentary sequence. The rocks underwent intense deformation during the Brookian Orogeny in Middle Cretaceous time. Several thrust faults juxtapose the stratigraphy. The Red Dog mine is composed of four deposits which together contain 105 Mt in resources and reserves for a total resource exceeding 18 Mt of Zn metal. The mine is an open pit with 25 foot high benches. The biggest challenge is not the Arctic conditions, but metal extraction, due to the fine grained nature of the mineralisation and the variability of the ore. The mine produces Zn and Pb-Ag concentrates that are shipped to smelters around the world from the Red Dog port facilities during the short summer period. Ore mineralogy is generally simple and consists of sphalerite, pyrite, galena and marcasite. The deposits are generally overlain by decametre thick exhalative barite horizons and exhibit strong silicification, which locally obliterates the original textures. Although described as a world class Sedex-type deposit, a large portion of the mineralisation exhibits sub-surface replacement textures. Moreover, unlike most other Sedex deposits, the reconstruction of the basin is made difficult by the structural complexity of the district. To assist exploration in the district, several assumptions are made regarding the deposit settings relative to metal source, growth faults or crustal extension.

INTEREST in the mineral possibilities (gold, copper) of northern Quebec, north of the Quebec-Cochrane branch of the Canadian National railway, has centred for many years in the Chibougamau district (see Figure 1). Since 1934, however, promising gold discoveries in the Rose Lake-Florence River section, 115 miles southwest of Chibougamau lake, have widened the interest, and prospectors have examined other parts of the country between Chibougamau lake and Bell river and the surrounding districts. The object of this paper is to !resent an outline of the geology, and to describe the mineral deposits, o part of this region, or, more specifically, of the part embraced by the Opawica-Chibougamau and Waswanipi map-areas(l), which include the districts about Chibougamau lake and Rose lake-Florence river, where mineral deposits are now in course of development either by surface or underground work. Early discoveries, developments, and explorations in the Chibougamau district are well summarized in the report of the Chibougamau Commission, published in 1911(2). The Commission discredited previous optimistic accounts of mineral discoveries in the area, made initially in 1903, but at the same time they expressed the opinion that, from a geological standpoint, the district promised a reward to diligent and intelligent prospecting. Their general conclusion-that prospecting in the area was not then (1911) commercially advisable in view of its inaccessibility and other handicaps shifted interest from the district until, some years later, valuable discoveries were made in the Rouyn area, and aircraft widened the field of successful exploration. During the past ten years or so, considerable energy has been spent in promoting the development of the district. The net result has been the discovery of a number of prospects, the majority of which have been explored only by trenching and, in most cases, diamond drilling.

Gold-bearing quartz veins and replacement chalcopyrite deposits are the two important types of metallic mineral deposits of the east central Manitoba mining district. The gold-bearing veins occur along Manigotagan valley, northwest for 25 miles from Beresford lake, and the copper deposits along Oiseau valley, between Oiseau lake and the east end of Lac du Bonnet. Lithium-bearing minerals of possible commercial value have recently been discovered in pegmatite along Winnipeg river about 10 miles east of Point du Bois. There are also prospect pits with showings of galena, sphalerite, cobaltite, pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite, cassiterite, and other minerals, but the various occurrences of these minerals, as exposed, are small. The bedrock and mineral deposits of this mining district are Precambrian and resemble in many respects the formations and mip.eral occurrences of western and northern Ontario. Although prospectors visited eastern Manitoba at intervals during the last fifty years, effective prospecting did not begin until 1913 or 1914, and not until 1923 were skilfully directed, systematic explorations undertaken. It is true, that between 1913 and 1923 considerable sums were expended in a number of attempts at mining and milling the gold-quartz ore, but these enterprises failed partly through poor management or attempts to develop veins that were too small or too low-grade to be worked at a profit under the existing conditions of transportation and power supply.

The Gallinas Mountains are in northern Lincoln County and southern Torrance County, New Mexico, USA where a series of alkaline igneous bodies, including porphyritic latite, trachyte/syenite, andesite, and rhyolite laccoliths, flows, dikes, and plugs, have intruded Permian sedimentary rocks belonging to the Permian Abo, Yeso, and Glorieta Formations. A small amount of bastnaesite, a REE mineral, was recovered during processing for fluorite from the Gallinas Mountains. Four types of deposits are found in the Gallinas Mountains: epithermal REE-F veins, Cu-REE-F veins, REE-F breccia pipes and iron skarn deposits; all are associated with Tertiary alkaline to alkalic-calcic igneous rocks. Alteration includes brecciation, silicification, chloritization, and fenitization. District zonation is defined by Cu-REE-F (±Pb, Zn, Ag) veins that form center of the district, surrounded by REE-F veins. Carbonatites are inferred at depth by the presence of fenitization, carbonatization of the breccias, presence of REE and similarity of the intrusive rocks and mineralization to areas with known carbonatites.

THE object of this paper is to review recent geological work in the Cariboo district and to present notes on the recent development of mineral properties. The Geological Survey has done considerable work in the Cariboo district, extending over a period of years. In 1885 and 1886, Bowman (1) mapped the geology of a large area. In 1922 and 1923, Johnston and Uglow (2) mapped Barkerville area in some detail and prepared a report on the placer and lode gold deposits. In 1931 and 1932, Cockfield and Walker (3) mapped the Quesnel Forks area. In 1933, Hanson reported on Willow River area ( 4), and in 1934 made a detailed examination of part of the Barkerville area (5). In 1935, Lang commenced work on the Keithley area, lying to the southeast of the Barkerville area, and in 1936 published a preliminary re-port (6). The work on Keithley area was continued in 1936 by both authors of the present paper. As the results of the earlier work have been published, this paper will be concerned largely with Keithley area, that is, the part of the region lyinp between longitudes 121° 00' and 121° 30', and latitudes 52° 45' and 53° 00 . This area lies astride Cariboo (Swamp) river and extends north some 17 miles from Keithley, which is situated near the southern border of the map-area (see sketch-map). Points in the western part of the map-area are fairly accessible. A road extends from Barkerville to upper Cunningham creek, and from this a trail crosses Snowshoe plateau to Keithley. A second trail from this road leads to the lower falls on Cariboo river. From this road, a branch road leads to upper Antler creek, with a trail leading from this branch road to Keithley. Part of this western half of the area is made up of the Snowshoe plateau, which constitutes a gently rolling surface, at or above timber line, where trails are largely unnecessary.

"The Quesnel Trough is underlain by a thick sequence of mainly Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic volcanic-clastic and sedimentary rocks that lie between the highly deformed Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the Omineca Geanticline to the east and the Upper Paleozoic Cache Creek Group in the Pinchi Geanticline to the west. Broad areas of the Trough between Kamloops and Williams Lake are covered by Eocene volcanics and sediments and by Miocene-Pliocene plateau lava. Granitic intrusions were apparently mainly confined to two major episodes; one about 200 m.y. ago (coeval with the Guichon batholith) and one about 100 m.y. ago. In addition, the region includes small granitic and syenitic intrusions, some porphyritic, that may be all or partly still younger. Exposures in the region are generally small and scattered, obscured by widespread, not necessarily thick glacial deposits. This, together with the extensive Tertiary cover, makes prospecting difficult. The part of the Quesnel Trough discussed here is the direct northwest-ward extension of the copper-rich Kamloops-Merritt-Princeton region. It contains the Boss Mountain molybdenum mine, related to a breccia zone induced in a batholith of the oldest group by a younger intrusion, and the Cariboo Bell copper deposit in Lower Jurassic volcanic-elastic rocks and syenitic intrusions. The Gibraltar deposit, in a 200-m.y. intrusion, is within the Pinchi Geanticline close to the margin of the Trough. Molybdenum prospects are mainly restricted within or near the 100-m.y. granitic rocks. Copper prospects, on the other hand, are most prominent in the volcanic-elastic rocks and in the 200-m.y.-old granitic rocks, although they can also be spatially related to younger intrusions. Copper thus has a wide potential distribution.The writers believe that the region is deserving of careful and comprehensive exploration by directly applying the knowledge and techniques developed in the important producing areas to the south. All of the major pre-Tertiary geological elements seem to have potential for mineral deposits; none should be ignored. A thorough knowledge of the thickness and distribution of the Tertiary rocks and the development of geophysical methods to ""see through"" them is of particular importance."

Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"The Red Mountain porphyry molybdenum deposit is situated in the Big Salmon Range, approximately 80 km east-northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon.Red Mountain is underlain by Paleozoic, argillaceous sedimentary rocks of the Yukon Cataclastic Complex, which have been intruded by a multi-phase mid-Cretaceous stock.Mineraliwtion, quartz stockwork, metal zonation, and an alteration assemblage characteristic of a porphyry molybdenum system have been superimposed on quartz monzonite porphyry and adjacent homfelsed sedimentary rocks. A later, barren and pyritic quartzeye diorite porphyry body and related dikes have dissected the quartz monzonite porphyry, homfelsed sedimentary rocks and associated molybdenite mineralization.Drill-indicated geological reserves of molybdenum mineralization outlined consist of 187 270 000 tonnes grading 0.167% MoS2.IntroductionLocationThe Red Mountain porphyry molybdenum deposit is located at 60°59'N, 133°44'W (NTS 105 C), approximately 80 km east-northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon. The property is situated within the rugged Big Salmon Range, 15 km east of the north-northwest-trending Teslin River. Red Mountain, at an elevation of 1702 m, consists of relatively steep, talus covered slopes with prominent gossanous bluffs marking the southeast flank. "Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. La minéralisation en métaux usuels se situe entre une unité basale d’argilite noire interlitée d’arénite et une unité supérieure composée d’argilite noire comprenant localement des calcaires fossilifères près de son sommet. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. Abstract-The late Archean Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex (PLAC) is a 0.9 x 17 km sill-like layered intrusion that is part of a suite of coeval megacrystic anorthosite bodies in the Cross Lake region, northwestern Superior Province. Exploration for Ti-V-Fe oxide mineralization and concurrent geological investigations have contributed to a greater understanding of the lithostratigraphy of the PLAC and its oxide mineralization. Mapping and drill core studies have established a laterally continuous igneous stratigraphy comprising six leucogabbro/anorthosite zones and three melagabbro/gabbro zones. Field evidence, including disrupted blocks of layered units, scour contacts, and size-graded and modally-graded layering, suggests younging towards both the northern and the central parts of the complex. A decrease in the anorthite content of the feldspars from An75 in the south to An30 in the north suggests that the magmas become more evolved to the north. Macrorhythmic layering and gross morphological features suggest that the PLAC crystallized from four major influxes of geochemically similar basaltic magmas. The paucity of magmatic erosional features in the PLAC indicates that layering developed in a relatively static magma chamber, so that in-situ crystallization processes are required to account for the observed petrologic diversity. Drilling has confirmed that a significant Ti- V-Fe resource is contained in two of the four discrete mineralized subzones in the PLAC. Textural evidence and the stratiform nature of the oxide-enriched subzones are consistent with a magmatic origin for the oxide mineralization.

The Star-Waddy Lakes area lies withjn the northeasterly-trending early- to mjd-Proterozoic volcanoseilimentary-pl utoruc belt referred to as the La Range Domllin. In the area investigated the domajn is composed of the Central Metavolcaruc Belt which is bordered by metasedimentary belts of the Crew Lake and MacLean Lake Belts to the northwest and southeast respectively. The boundaries between the Central Metavolcanic Belt and the flanking belts are generally marked by prominent zones of shearing. The volcanosed imentary succession is intruded by a variety of ultramafic to felsic plutons which, on the basis of lithology, field relations and geochronology, can be broadly subdivided into three groups or episodes. These are: a) an 'early' (ea. 1866 Ma), possibly subvolcanic, episode marked by composite intrusions ranging from gabbro-diorite to granite, b) an 'intermediate' (ea. 1854 Ma) plutonic event distinguished by more homogeneous felsic intru ions ; and c) a 'later' (ea. 1835 Ma) event characterized by leucocratic quartz-rich grani te intrusions. The La Range Domain has undergone polyphase deformation with a strongly developed northeast-trending structural grain. Large scale folding is manjfested by large regional sy nforms, arcuate and triangular patterns associated with many of the plutons and by tight to isoclinal folds within the adjacent metasedimentary belts. Inhomogeneous strain characterizes much of the Star-Waddy Lakes area. With strain gradients being typically very steep, zones of high strain consisting of zones of extreme extensional fabrics, discrete shearing, as well as broader zones of cataclasis and structural slicing, are often juxtaposed with areas of relatively minimal deformation . Dilation structures tend to favour these zones of highly contrasting strain. Late, brittle fractures, faults and shear zones are widespread and appear to be particularly important as loci for gold mineralization. Metan1orphic mineral assemblages indicate that upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies conditions were attained. Geological and geochenucal evidence indicates that the Central Metavolcanic Belt evolved in an island arc environment. Metavolcanic rocks from both the Waddy and Star Lakes areas display similar characteristics on variation diagrams (e.g. AFM and the Jensen cation plot) in that the dominant trend is calc-alkaline with some basic to intermediate types having a mildly tholeiitic character. A few samples from the southern end of Lower Waddy lake display komatiitic to basaltic-komatiitic afl'injties. The relatively immobile minor and trace elements (e.g. Ti , Zr, Nb, Y, Cr) provide reliable characterization of the metavolcanics, particularly of the basalts, which have highly distinctive trace element properties. Geochemical patterns for the basalts are similar to those for modem volcanic arc basalts. Low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7017 - 0.7019) are consistent with a subduction-related origin for the volcanics. The major plutons have chemical properties typical of volcanic arc granites and are largely calc-alkaline in character, showing little chemical variation from the volcanics.
