Foreword Explosion hazards differ widely in the mines of different fields or coal basins. They also differ as between different mines in the same basin or fold, because of variations in gas entering the mines, and because dust conditions and explosion hazards are affected by the mining methods employed and the organization of the work. It is unquestionably true, however, that there are greater differences in explosion hazards in mines of different coal fields or basins than between different mines of the same field or basin. In these respects, the coal fields and individual mines in Alberta are not exceptional. The same conditions obtain in various countries where coal is mined, and are found in single States, as for example in Colorado, where coals are mined ranging in character from sub-bituminous to anthracite, and in attitude from flat horizontal to steeply pitching beds. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its experimental mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., has made large-scale tests of the relative explosibility of dusts of coals, ranging in rank from Wyoming sub-bituminous coal containing 19 per cent moisture, to anthracite from Pennsylvania, and including samples from a mine in the Crowsnest Pass district, B.C., and from a Vancouver Island mine. The Bureau has also made similar tests of the dust of coal from a Yorkshire mine which the British Safety-in-Mines Research Board uses as standard.

In some parts of the world explosions in mines are more commonplace events. Even in the more developed nations explosions have occurred in recent times. In some cases these mines have significantly lowered their lost time injury frequency rates and as such considered themselves to be ?safe? operations. The consequence of these explosions has been devastating. It is not just the loss of those underground, but also to the families that have lost people in them and the broader community that has lost friends, income, business opportunities, and in many cases support and sponsorships. It begs so many questions, ?What went wrong??; ?Why were the circumstances not foreseen??; ?What could have been done to prevent it??; ?How is it that no one stopped it, reported it, fixed it etc.??. Being held accountable for negligence, should not be overlooked, however this may not aid the processes required to find all the answers. If the nature of explosions is understood, the circumstances and tools to prevent them are readily available then the occurrence and reoccurrence are due to weaknesses or inadequacies of the systems of work or in the implementation of them. This paper restates the fundamentals of gas explosions, examines the options to control the underground environment through ventilation, gas management and monitoring, education and training. Case studies have been used to examine systematic failures in ventilation management. In some of these cases it is not so much, the system that had been developed, but the interpretation and implementation of the system that resulted in the failure and subsequent loss.

The principal results from a previous paper presented at the Mine Accident Prevention Association of Ontario in 1987 (1) are summarized here. It is concluded that the selection of explosives in mines experiencing sulphide ignitions is important and that aluminized explosives should be avoided because of their high explosion temperatures and their detonation products. The duration of the blast is also critical and secondary blasts should not occur simultaneously with nearby priroa:ty blasts.

"In October 1982, Rio Algom Limited, purchased a tin prospect near East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, from Shell Canada Resources. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. In formulating an explosive for any specific set of conditions, various factors must be taken into consideration. Is it to be subjected to water or moisture? .If so, it must be designed to have an inherent ability to resist water. Is it to be used in confined spaces underground, where ventilation is limited? If it is, it must possess qualities enabling it to form, upon explosion, the minimum quantity of noxious gases, such as carbon monoxide or oxides of nitrogen. Is it for use where low temperatures may possibly prevail? If so, it must be capable of resisting such temperatures without freezing. Is it for use where dust or inflammable gases may be present? If it is, then it must be so formulated as to produce, upon detonation, a flame of the lowest possible temperature and the shortest possible duration, in order to lessen the chance of ignition of such gas or dust. This is actually the essential property of a permitted explosive, and it is undoubtedly the most important characteristic of an explosive which is to be used in gassy or closed-light mines. This being the quality that distinguishes permitted explosives from other types, it is interesting to investigate the ways and means by which the low-flame-temperature characteristic is obtained . Generally speaking, such explosives are so designed as to contain comparatively small quantities of nitroglycerin and relatively large quantities of the strength-producing salt, ammonium nitrate. This ingredient does not develop as high a temperature upon explosion as does nitroglycerin, so its presence, in large measure, in place of nitroglycerin results in an explosive which has an inherent low-flame-temperature characteristic, as opposed to one which is .made up largely of nitroglycerin, which would ordinarily be in the high-flame-temperature class. Additions are also made of flame-quenching salts such as sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, and up to a certain limiting percentage of sodium nitrate. These salts, with the exception of the last, do not ordinarily take an active part in the explosive reaction, being present primarily to absorb heat liberated by the reacting ingredients.

While the general public has little knowledge or appreciation of either the mining or explosives industries, modern civilization could not exist without them. They are to-day the key industries of the world. In common with many other industries the demands of the war greatly stimulated the production of explosives and the research necessary for such increased production. Production, supplies of all kinds, munitions of all sorts and then again production, practically regardless of cost, were the first reactions to the imperative war demands of the governments of the world. Following the war there was a momentary lull, then first gradually but with quickening acceleration, particularly in a recent slump, the situation was reversed - cost and not production was the dominant factor. Some industries readjusted themselves very rapidly and completely. Others were but partially re-adjusted and others again only carried out the process of deflation in certain departments. The explosives industry in Canada has not only thoroughly deflated itself, but has learned to apply to commercial disruptive explosives, the best, most efficient and most economical methods of manufacturing developed during the war. As a consequence, miners have at their disposal to-day better and more different kinds of compressed energy than ever before in all the long history of mining.

Uncertainty quantification is a means of articulating the reliability of model estimations. Models of copper pyrometallurgical processes have been published for decades but discussion of their reliability has typically been terse and qualitative, mitigating understanding of their exact applicability to industrial situations. This presentation shows basic uncertainty propagation and Bayesian model calibration, two powerful uncertainty quantification tools, applied to a reduced order model of copper fire/anode refining. The implications of the uncertainty quantification analyses on the applicability of the model results to industrial practice are then discussed. Finally, other possible applications of uncertainty quantification to copper extractive metallurgy are explored. INTRODUCTION Modern copper production operations, including mining operations through wire drawing factories, are ubiquitously heavily instrumented. Most mine-sites and smelters have large repositories of historical data. That said, much of this data is not exploited to its maximum effect. This proceeding provides examples of using uncertainty quantification (UQ) to maximize the informational yield of the data collected from a fire-refining operation. Anode/Fire Refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is an essential and universally employed processing step at smelters (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). Much like the smelting and converting furnaces further up the process stream, anode furnaces are difficult to instrument due to their high temperature and the corrosive and/or caking quality of their offgas. This makes continuous and accurate measurement of the streams leaving the unit operation, e.g. liquid copper, slag, and offgas very difficult. As an example, offgas flowmeters, while providing continuous draft values, could miss the actual draft value by tens of percent due to caking or corrosion. UQ methods account for the uncertainty in process measurements and parameter values; they use a process model with measurements of performance indices to provide better and better estimations of process performance. This proceeding will first introduce a surrogate model for copper fire refining, made from a 1D, transient, reacting flow model of the process presented elsewhere in these proceedings (Mather & Krane, 2019). Discussion of the data used to make the surrogate model, as well as the creation of the surrogate model, will be included. Then, a Monte Carlo simulation will be performed, showing the expected soot production rate based on the surrogate model and assumptions about the uncertainty in the model’s parameters. Finally, the surrogate model parameters will be calibrated in a Bayesian way; this will tell what the actual uncertainty in the parameters are, given a set of observed industrial data and prior assumptions of the observations’ and parameters’ uncertainty.

Iron (ferrous ions and ferric ions) plays an important role in the heap leaching of copper sulfide minerals and copper electrowinning. In our previous study, a novel oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) equation only based on the variables of temperature and nominal ferric/ferrous ratio was developed to predict the redox potential of the quaternary H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O system, and its applicability was also extended to more complex acidic iron sulfate solutions, especially those generated during the acidic leaching and bioleaching of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) to recover copper. In this work, the broader range of applicability of this equation to other complicated acidic iron solutions containing copper ions has been extended and determined. Specifically, synthetic iron-containing solutions with copper ions according to the conditions of industrial electrolyte during copper electrowinning and heap leaching have been used to measure the ORP and test the developed equation. It seems that this equation can still be employed to predict the redox potential of the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple for the simulated solutions under conditions related to copper electrowinning and pregnant leaching solution generated during heap leaching over a wide range of solution concentration, nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio and temperature. It has shown that the prediction and measurement of redox potential is highly useful to estimate and understand the iron chemistry of industrial leaching and electrowinning processes. INTRODUCTION It is well-known that iron (ferric or ferrous) ions are widely involved in the hydrometallurgical production of non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Au and Zn, mainly in the form of acidic iron sulfate solutions. As far as Cu is concerned, in a typical leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning process, ferric ion plays a central role in the heap leaching process and is reduced to ferrous ions in the pregnant leaching solution. Ferric ion is the most important surrogate oxidant and the dissolved ferric/ferrous couple plays an important catalytic role in accelerating the leaching rate with oxygen as an oxidant (Peters et al., 1986; Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). In addition, during the traditional electro-winning process, oxygen is evolved at the anode, and copper is reduced at the cathode. A common idea is that iron in the electrolyte in copper electrowinning cell (with total iron of 1–4.4 g/L) plays an important role in reducing the current efficiency. According to the published results (Winand et al., 1975; Dew et al., 1985; Moats et al., 2009; Khouraibchia et al., 2010), thecurrent efficiency decreases linearly with increasing ferric ion concentration and the energy consumption increase was mainly caused by the decrease in current efficiency.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

"IntroductionThe western region of North America has long been considered a dynamic market supporting such diversified industries as lumber, agriculture, cement, and electronics. In recent years however, the region has also been the focus of a great deal of activity in the extender and filler mineral s business from companies seeking to position themselves to take advantage of the large demand for these materials both here and abroad.Extender and Filler MineralsExtender and filler mineral s include 15different products used in numerous end uses. The nine most important extenders and fillers are listed in Table I. These products range in price from under $50 a ton to over $4,000 a ton and basically represent the following three different types of minerals:Particulate products-Calcium carbonate; Kaolin; Silica.Platy minerals-Talc (Montana, Canada); Mica.Fibrous minerals-Talc (California, Eastern U.S .A.);Wollastonite.What distinguishes these products from other industrial minerals? For one thing, an important feature of extender and filler minerals is that they are used primarily in such consumer non-durable good s as paper, paint, plastics, sealants, and rubber which traditionally do not react as violently to swings in the economic cycle. In addition, these minerals are sold principally on key physical properties, usually brightness, particle size and shape, oil absorption, and hardness. As part of the physical minerals segment of industrial minerals, extenders and fillers are traditionally the most stable group and typically the most profitable. Studies by C.H. Kline over the past decade on extender and filler minerals has revealed historic average profitability (expressed as a percentage on sales) nearly double that of most other industrial mineral s.The demand for these minerals in the western region (Fig. 1), closely follow s the areas of greatest population concentration. These markets include pulp and paper, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and paint, around Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. Other significant markets for extender and filler minerals in western North America include joint cements, carpet backing, and plastics, mainly PVC pipe."

"Recently, lining life of the INMETCO submerged arc furnace has been dramatically extended from an average of eleven months in the 1980s to a current record of 34 months. This paper summarizes test work and operating results describing the development and establishment of slag parameters that reduce corrosion of the magnesite-chrome refractory lining.The desired slag parameters are now maintained by utilizing waste streams as slag additives. This paper also discusses the successful evaluation of a rebonded-fused-grain magnesite- chrome refractory as a lower cost, more thermo-mechanically forgiving alternative to a fused-cast magnesite-chrome refractory that had been the refractory of choice in previous years at INMETCO.IntroductionSince 1978, INMETCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of INCO Limited, has been well known for recycling by-products from the production of stainless steel, namely, EAF bag- house dust, mill scale and grinding swarf. INMETCO operates the only smelter in North America dedicated to the recovery of nickel, chromium, and iron from hazardous and nonhazardous waste. The process was developed in the research laboratories of INCO. In recent years, the process has been successfully modified to accept a wider variety of other specialty steel waste streams including: spent pickling solutions, pickling and waste water treatment filter cakes, acid scale, carbon brick, spent bag-house bags, torch cutter dust, spent dolomitic and chromium-bearing refractories, and rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries."

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. The operating work index of this circuit varied from 5.2 kWh/t to 44 kWh/t over this 5 year period. The full suite of energy curves"

Abstract-This paper discusses the fundamental question, "what is an adequate sample size?" in the light of recent developments regarding parameters of Gy’s well-known formula for predicting sampling variance. New understanding of the granulometric factor, g, and the liberation factor, l, had significant impact on the results of calculations involving Gy’s equation. For the granulometric factor, justifications are given as to why nominal comminution size should always be reported as P95 (i.e., the screen size rejecting 95% of the mass). A small but important change in the model to estimate the liberation factor makes the difference between a predictive formula that works or does not. Other parameters and considerations regarding their practical implementation are commented upon in light of the author’s experience.

"A novel reagent-free method of extracting gold from gravity middling concentrates in the Yukon placer fields is presented in this paper. This method exploits the malleability of gold by submitting concentrates to grinding in a rod mill. Brittle waste minerals are effectively reduced, whereas malleable gold particles are flattened and are then extracted by classification through sieves. Recoveries in the field using a laboratory-sized rod mill regularly exceeded 90%, whereas correlation laboratory tests indicated recovery to be most sensitive to the mill charge size. This method has broad potential, including application to the gravity circuits of large hard-rock processing circuits.RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode sans agents réactifs d’extraction de l’or dans les concentrés gravimétriques mixtes que l’on trouve dans les districts placériens du Yukon. Cette méthode exploite la malléabilité de l’or en broyant des concentrés dans un broyeur à barres. Les déchets miniers cassants sont bien réduits, alors que les particules d’or malléables sont écrasées puis extraites par classification au travers de cribles. Si les récupérations sur le site à l’aide d’un broyeur à barres de laboratoire excèdent 90 %, les essais de concordance en laboratoire indiquent que la récupération est très sensible à la taille de la charge du broyeur. Cette méthode présente un grand potentiel, notamment une application possible aux circuits gravimétriques des grands circuits de traitement des roches dures.INTRODUCTIONExploiting the high density of gold to separate it from waste materials is the oldest known mineral processing technique. This basic technique is still widely used in gravity concentration circuits today; however, gravity processing invariably results in high-value middlings, especially in the Yukon placer gold fields. In addition to having a uniquely high density, gold is also the most malleable metal. This unique malleability can be exploited to extract gold from otherwise inaccessible gravity middlings.The Yukon placer gold industry has been continuously ongoing since the 1860s, and today produces approximately 60,000 oz t (1.87 million grams) of crude gold annually, most of which is from the Klondike region near Dawson City (Van Loon & Bond, 2014). It is important to note that Yukon placer miners do not use any chemical extraction methods; rather, gravity upgrading methods are the sole processing techniques used. Placer deposits are typically coarse, well liberated, and naturally gravity concentrated and recoverable, thus making more expensive chemical extraction unnecessary (Mitchell, Evans, & Styles, 1997). Furthermore, a strict permitting regime, environmental concerns, lack of expertise, and fear of repercussions from regulators prevent miners from attempting more advanced processing methods, such as flotation or cyanidation. Even simple chemical extractions like mercury amalgamation have not been implemented for decades, with one observer noting that, as many as 30 years ago, “the art of mercury for amalgamating appear[ed] to be dying [in the Yukon]” (Osler, 1983)."

"Mineral processing and smelting operations have the reputation of being complex processes. Process operators of these unit operations have acquired from experience and basic training a superficial understanding of the relationships between process output and manipulated variables. This understanding, which is a very valuable know-how for process control and optimization as well as for operator training, is however difficult to extract. This paper describes a time series based approach that can be used to extract this know-how, which can subsequently be used for operator training. The method is illustrated with an example taken from a smelting process.IntroductionThe emergence of Total Quality Management and Statistical Process Control philosophies in the North American industry (Brown, 1991 ), as well as the increasing popularity of the IS0- 900x standard accreditation, provide a strong incentive to review the training procedures for plant operators. The importance of employees training is acknowledged in two of the 14 points of Deming's road to quality (Deming, 1982) as well as by control engineering consultants (Hendricks et al., 1994). However guidelines for the operation of industrial processes are often transferred from an operator to another one with allowance for flexible interpretation of many operating rules. Such transfer is typical of complex industrial processes to which particulate processes of ore dressing and extractive metallurgy belong.Capturing the knowledge of experienced operators is often a difficult task. Cognition engineers are able to extract this knowledge and transfer it into rules that ultimately are implemented into expert systems. Cognition engineers are however not always available and plant supervisors may prefer to keep training as an internal liability. Another difficulty through interviewing of the process operator is its lack of willingness to transfer what he has learned by hard working to other people, whose ultimate goals are to develop computerized applications that may replace him in a near future, or reduce its importance in the production line.This paper shows that time series can be advantageously used to capture the average process understanding of plant operators and to help reviewing training procedures. The method s illustrated with data collected during normal operation of electric arc furnaces and it is shown how the approach has led to a fruitful discussion between process engineers and operators that ultimately provided savings of more that $200,000 per year per furnace. There are 9 furnaces in the studied foundry. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.
