In this paper, the author briefly introduces the resource characteristics of Chinese iron ore, as well as the present increasing market demand for iron concentrate. The SHP-3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is used to separate complicated weak-magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-3200 HIMS, including modifying the angle of magnetic polar from 90¦ to 83¦, cooling the exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing equipment to wash off magnetic particles and adjusting the tooth-space of the matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm to enhance the recovery of fine particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In order to improve the recovery of difficult-separated iron, the film-magnetic separation technique is applied into the HIMS and a new LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically. A flowing-film feeder is also added and the feed mouth is modified to make a slurry flow formed in the form of film along the wall of matrix. The microstructure and dissemination character of the mineral particles is studied, and the specific susceptibility of the primary minerals is measured. Then the distributive characteristics of a magnetic field for the separator with film-magnetic technique and the motion of particles in the process of separation are all analysed. By introducing the film-magnetic separation technique to SHP-Φ700 HIMS, the recovery of iron can be raised from 69.45 per cent to 76.07 - 78.96 per cent with the similar grade of concentrates of iron. Such an increase of 9.51 per cent in the recovery also shows that it is feasible for such film-magnetic separation technique to be applied into HIMS.

The Vancouver Island Highway Project (VIHP) was a $CAD 1.2 billion expenditure by the Province of British Columbia to improve travel safety and relieve traffic congestion between Victoria and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. In the section of highway between the Tsolum River and Oyster River, on the Inland Island Highway portion of the VIHP, over half of the rock to be cut and filled was found to be net acid generating. The Tsolum River has been impacted by metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) for decades from an upstream closed minesite. Geochemical testwork indicated: over half of the rock along this section of highway was potentially net acid generating based on a site-specific SNPR (=NP/SAP) criterion of 1.5; some core samples were already acidic; pyrite occurred in disseminated framboidal and gel forms; the rate of acid generation was not high; measured neutralisation potential (NP) provided some lag time for the onset of net acidity; and non-carbonate neutralising minerals prevented low pH (These predictions led to ML/ARD controls involving: realignment of the highway; elevation control to minimise the volume of disturbed rock; encapsulation of blasted-rock fills within the highway, surrounded by low-permeability till and covered with asphalt; and diversion of water away from cut faces. Internal pipes drained any water reaching the fills into external ditches and ponds, where the water could be monitored and, if necessary, treated. Water from the cuts was also captured in ditches and carried to monitored ponds. Elevated aqueous sulfate concentrations in several ponds confirmed that sulfide minerals were oxidising, but the lack of both acidic pH and increasing trends in concentrations demonstrated that ML/ARD was controlled. Contingency plans for any pond that may become acidic include water treatment, which predictive testwork has shown would not require substantial amounts of limestone or lime.

This paper presents the methodology for optimising blasting and comminution processes in terms of fragmentation developed by Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT). The methodology is called process integration and optimisation (PIO) and involves a number of steps: benchmarking, rock characterisation, measurements, modelling/simulation of blasting and comminution processes and where required, material tracking. The measurements collected while at site are combined with rock characterisation and definition of ore domains to model the complete process chain. These data are used to develop site-specific models of blast fragmentation, crushing, grinding and flotation. This allows customised blast patterns to be developed that optimise both crushing and grinding performance. For each domain, blast designs are recommended to generate the optimal fragmentation size for downstream processes. The objective is to minimise the overall cost for the entire process and the changes often have a positive impact on the mining operation. Process constraints such as wall stability, ore dilution, muck pile characteristics, size of mining equipment, size and installed power of crushing and milling equipment and other process bottlenecks are considered in the blast designs. This methodology has allowed many operations around the world to significantly increase their production: generating typically five to 20 per cent higher concentrator throughput. A number of case studies will be discussed in this paper to describe the structured approach taken and demonstrate the benefits that are achievable. This paper will focus on the role of blasting in the optimisation of the entire mine to mill process chain and discuss elements of the PIO methodology: rock characterisation, fragmentation modelling and measurement, the relationship between fragmentation and mill throughput and material tracking.

Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. Following on from this description of the state-of-the-art, the authors also provide their own views on what developments we may see in this area in the near future.CITATION:Harding, A and Chappell, M, 2014. Elimination of zinc by the reduction of iron works dusts is examined. The process consists of blending, filtration, drying, balling, preheating and reduction in the rotary kiln. Dust slurries and dry dusts are mixed and stored in slurry basins and the blended slurry is filtered. In the balling process it is important to make green pellets which will withstand Thermal shock in the preheater and rotary kiln. Preheating to about 2000C is preferred to ensure effective use of coke fines in the blast furnace dust. The coke retained in the pellets accelerates the reduction rate. However, at the initial stage of the reduction the pellets become weakened and have to be heated slowly to prevent ring formation. In order to ensure zinc vaporization, pellets should be heated to a temperature of 1100-11500C in the kiln with injection of l ignite fines from the discharge end. Pellets having a degree of metallization of more than 90% and containing less than 0. 1% zinc have been obtained using a test kiln. The final pellet product is intended for use as blast furnace feed. A new plant with a capacity of 20, 000 tonne of dust per month is now under construct- ion and will be in operation next year.

The use of explosives in underground mining has its drawbacks, particularly in the case of thin or narrow vein type deposits. Due to that, there is a need to develop more discriminative and safe rock-breaking technologies. Mechanical rock splitting seems to be one of the most promising avenues in this respect. This paper describes briefly principles and features of radial-axial splitters. It reviews a feasibility study done to evaluate a potential of this technology in selective mining. It was intended to compare productivity and cost of ædrill-splitÆ mining with conventional cut-and-fill method. Hypotheses and assumptions adopted, methodology used and the obtained results are presented and discussed. The study has confirmed an interesting potential of radial-axial splitters in mining thin and narrow vein deposits. In conclusion, it is stressed however, that it will take more R&D work to corroborate the results obtained. Some suggestions concerning future research in this field are also given.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

One of the features of modern life has been the increasing speed of change. We see this in many facets of activity, but in few areas more clearly than in the financial sector. The speed of communication and the advent of screen trading have made world markets one.We have titled this presentation "Cycles". It has been the conventional wisdom that Economies, Metal Prices, Equity Markets, etc. move in cycles. The objective of our presentation is to examine these cycles, to comment on the interrelationships, and to postulate where we are in The Current Cycle". We will draw conclusions as to where one should direct effort in the Mineral Scene over the next decade or so.Throughout this discussion we will use various terms to describe Time. The "Short Term" is typically meant to refer to the next six months: the "Medium Term" is one to two years; and the "Long Term" is the three to five year horizon.

The purpose of any feasibility study is to determine whether a particular investment or management program will enhance shareholder wealth by, for example, producing an economic return in excess of the cost of equity capital.The threshold rate of return conventionally used in gold feasibility studies is higher than the cost of equity capital, meaning that some viable projects are wrongly described as being sub-economic with their development deferred.Is the industry failing to fully realise its potential? Aside from important technical considerations that determine the cost of exploiting inground inventories, feasibility studies need to incorporate expectations about future gold prices, exchange rates, interest rates and tax rates.Rather than revert to speculation, insights from capital markets give a rigorous framework in which these parameters can be determined for feasibility purposes. Separate questions sometimes, and then inadequately, addressed by feasibility studies include: ò Is it optimum? Many projects are expanded soon after project commissioning - what does this say about the quality of the initial feasibility study? Moreover, does the rate of extraction really matter? ò What is it worth? Although feasibility studies are designed to address viability rather than valuation, such studies are never- theless used by the industry as further evidence that the equity markets have got it wrong again! More likely the problem is with the financial slide rule being used. ò Can it be debt financed? The bankable feasibility study has entered the vocabulary of the gold mining industry but what does it mean? Does it matter anyway how the project is to be Financed?

The work to be described is part of a comprehensive research on the influence of impurities on the properties of lead. The author had previously compared an electrolytic lead containing less than 0.002% total impurities with a commercial lead containing 0.008% impurities (excluding oxygen) and had shown that the former recrystallised more readily than the latter under the same conditions of cold work and annealing. This difference in properties was attributed to the difference in purity. Electrolytic lead containing only 0.0005% total impurities has been prepared and cast in vacuo. Some interesting effects have been obtained by working and annealing this lead, and by adding silver to it. The preparation of this lead, and the effects obtained thereon, are described in this paper. The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

In the field of mining engineering, design and planning are complex tasks, which require the knowledge of various engineering disciplines. GRUBE (Graphisch-RechnerUnterstiitzter BergwerksEntwurf) is a modular databased program system, which offers computer aid for all mining departments using a 3D CAD software as the user interface. Despite the data quantity and complexity, specific and uniform working conditions have to be applied to the planning of technical equipment of a pit. With the application of 3D graphics, complex data stores and their interrelations become 'palpable' for the user by suitable visualisation. GRUBE-M forms the mechanical operations module of GRUBE, in which underground locations displayed as three-dimensional graphic models are `equipped' interactively. Planning alternatives can be created and compared quickly in terms of technical calculations and economical analysis.

SmartTag is a radio frequency identification (RFID) based technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and finally into the concentrator. This paper presents current developments and the future direction of the SmartTagÖ ore tracking system, as well as presenting some case studies. Successful applications of the SmartTag system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This presented Metso with a number of technological challenges, including RFID tag and antenna design. By reducing the traditional RFID tag diameter from 60 mm to 20 mm the RFID tags can now successfully pass through a secondary crusher. The new smaller RFID tags (referred to as mini RFID tags) have been used in some Process Integration and Optimisation projects with very promising results. The results indicate that the miniature RFID tags have a higher survivability to blasting and through secondary crushing stages. Extending ore tracking further through the process allows more reliable linking of spatial data with time based process performance. Metso is looking at developing even smaller micro RFID tags, and is also investigating other applications for the SmartTag system, including ore tracking from the original source to the final destination (ie from the mine, through the plant and ports to the customer).

There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. The economic significance of a fundamental understanding of the mineral pyrrhotite is dis- cussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship of other sulphide minerals to the pyrrhotite when it is the major sulphide mineral present in an ore body. Studies of the Kambalda nickel deposit are used to give a better under- standing of (a) the genesis and other character- istics of a particular ore body (b) the textural relationships between pyrrhotite and other sul- phide minerals (c) magnetic properties of natural pyrrhotite, and (e) the oxidation and supergene processes that take place in a sulphide ore body.

The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1.
