"It has long been recognized that the properties of polycrystalline substances are not the same as those of single crystals. These differences are especially marked in metels and metallic minerals, and are of greatest practical importance in metal working and ore treatment. The property changes encountered in passing from a metal single crystal to a poly-crystalline aggregate are the same as are produced by cold-working a metal or by the precipitation of a disperse phase. Hence, we may logically assume that the property changes are all due directly or indirectly to the formation of interfacial area or internal surface. Our problem, then, is to ascertain the physicochemical state of the metal atoms at such internal surface and show how this physicochemical condition accounts for the pronounced changes of mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties that accompany increased internal surface.GENERAL CONCEPT OF INTERNAL SURFACEIn 1678, Huyghens attempted to explain the double refraction of calcite by postulating that crystals were built from a regular arrangement of ellipsoidal particles. Over 100 years later, Abbé Hauy concluded from his studies of cleavage that crystals might be built from small units, but the units were of the same shape as the entire crystal. This idea, which was prevalent in mineralogical thought before the advent of X-ray spectrometry, was discarded when the great success of Bragg made it appear that the chemical atoms were in reality the elements of structure. In the further development of X-ray technique, however, C. G. Darwin, in England, and P. P. Ewald, in Germany, found it necessary to postulate crystal units con¬taining many atoms. The latter gave the name of mosaic crystals to those so constituted. The individual units are supposed to Possess the ideal atomic arrangements revealed by the X-ray but are not oriented with respect to one another."

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

Factors governing the dissolution of nickel and iron in pentlandite and pyrrhotite concentrates from Mt. Windarra were studied for aqueous solutions at normal temperatures and pressures. The effects of dissolved dioxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen ions, and chloride ions are described. The direct reaction of aerated water wiili pyrrhotite is much faster than with pentlandite, and reaction rates are proportional to the dissolved dioxygen concentration. In both cases divalent metal sulphates are produced initially. The subsequent oxidation of iron(II) to iron(III) and its oxolation produces acid solutions which rapidly attack both minerals. The presence of carbon dioxide or chloride ion has little effect on these rates.

The suggested new method for control of geomechanical state of undermined rock mass ensures, as a safety measure for the earth surface protection, the decrease of deformations by 2,5 - 10 times in mining the single seam, and by 1,5 - 5 times - in mining bed series, i. e. approximately within the seam ranges as in the application of full packing with various compressive properties or partial extraction of resources over the area with different coefficients of extraction. It should be noted that this new method has the following advantages o\w rhr. conventional methods: a) the decrease of the packing area and packing works volume by 2 - 4 fold including the operating and productive expenses; b) the elimination of mineral losses due to the increase of extraction coefficient up to 100 5%; c) rock utilization from workings drivage by its placing in the mined - out space. Perspective field of application of this method: disconservation of mineral resources in the left protective pillars of various designation.

For many decades control strategies have been based upon samples taken from liquid steel, molten slag and gas phase as well as from solid products. Because of recent developments in the areas of dynamic control models, artificial intelligence and expert systems, there is an increasing incentive to develop diagnostic sensors, which permit in-situ rapid determinations of concentrations of various elements in molten steel. In this paper, an overview is given on recent developments in the areas of sensors for use in ferroalloy and steel production. Particular emphasis will be given on (i) innovative application of sensors for on-line determinations of dissolved elements, Si, P, N, H and Cr in molten iron and ferroalloys, (ii) evaluation of inclusions in liquid metal and (iii) rapid determinations of slag compositions.

A field experiment was performed in a production unit of an operating copper room and pillar mine to compare the support capabilities provided by resin and mechanical roof bolts. Resin and mechanical roof bolts were alternately installed in eight intersections in a single entry. Rock mechanics instrumentation was installed to measure roof sag, bed separation, convergence, bolt pullout, torque, and strain. Bolt cost and installation time are included. Two analyses of the test were made. The analysis of the rock mechanics data showed there was no definite difference between the two bolting systems. From a broader analysis on a mine-wide basis it was concluded that resin bolts gave better support. A critical view of the experiment is given in the appendix.

FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. This paper describes the development of a process for producing manganese and iron pellet concentrates from low-grade manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range by a two-stage sulfatization-reduction roast. First, the manganese minerals (7.5 percent manganese) were converted to water-soluble manganese sulfate by roasting in sulfur oxide gases at 700° C, then, the hematitic iron minerals (31 percent iron) in the hot sulfatized are were reduced to magnetite with simulated reformed natural gas in the temperature range of 350° to 425° C. Batch tests were made in a 3-inch-ID by 6-inch-long, gas-heated, stainless steel retort, and continuous countercurrent experiments were performed in a 2-inch-ID by 10-foot-long, electrically heated shaft furnace. Manganese sulfate was removed from the roasted product by leaching with water, and over 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in an oxide product (65 percent manganese) obtained by precipitation, drying, and thelmal decomposition of the sulfate. An iron oxide concentrate (60 percent iron) with an iron recovery of 75 percent was obtained from the water-insoluble residue by magnetic separation.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. Installation of support in known poor ground intersections during reaming operations requires rapid access to stabilize the shaft wall and thus to prevent the loss of the shaft through scaling. This is especially relevant to shafts of long dimension where the duration from time of exposure to time of support installation is lengthy This paper deals with the innovative methodology employed at Harmony?s No. 8 Shaft 17/24 level sub ventilation shaft to rapidly support a shale intersection between 23 and 24 Level by employing a single deck stage suspended from the reamer head by means of Skyjack winches.

"The ores of the Iberian Pynte Belt are typically massive sulphide ores with very fine grained mineral textures. EuroZinc Mining Corporation is currently evaluating one of the massive sulphide deposits located near the town of Aljustrel, in South Central Portugal. The deposit contains significant grades of lead, zinc and silver. The ores are comprised solely of sulphide mineralization consisting of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and some secondary copper minerals. Liberation requirements for these ores are typically 22 to 25 microns. A selective flotation process has been utilized to produce separate lead and zinc concentrates for sale to off-site contract smelters.This paper outlines the process test results and describes the process parameters required to optimize the process parameters. Ths test program has been conducted in support of the re-opening of the facilities in Aljustrel. The 3500 tpd mining and milling facility was commissioned in 1990 and operated for 18 months before closing. The previous facility was designed to produce three products using a selective copper-lead-zinc flotation process. EuroZinc Mining Corporation is proposing to re-open the operation, selectively mining from a lead-zinc phase of the massive sulphide deposit and produce only lead and zinc concentrates.Results are presented and discussed.PROJECT HISTORY AND CURRENT PROJECT OBJECTIVESThe EuroZinc Aljustrel Project is a potential major producer of lead, zinc and silver located in the Iberian Pyrite belt of south-central Portugal. The town of Aljustrel is historically associated with mining dating to the time of the Romans. The area is rich in pyrite deposits, and sections of the pyrite deposits contain significant zones of copper, lead, zinc and silver. Mining in Aljustrel during the last century (1900’s) included a major pyrite mining operation, which produced feed for sulphuric acid production. Pynte mining operated from the 1930’s to the early 1970’s and a short-lived base metal operation from 1989 to 199 1."

"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

What seems like a simple request is actually not a trivial exercise. æRecipeÆ style manuals are not readily available. However, many æexpertsÆ are lurking around willing to deliver solutions which will solve all of your problems. Even though similar ore deposit styles (e.g. porphyry Cu, IOCG, Ni-laterites, calcrete hosted U, etc.) have many similar characteristics, each ore deposit is unique. Hence your geometallurgy program needs to be æfit-for-purposeÆ. The objective of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at Inco's Stobie mine was to conduct a long term field evaluation of diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems available to the underground mining industry. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of DPF regeneration, efficiency of DPF systems and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions, and reliability and durability of DPF systems. Nine state-of-the-art diesel particulate matter (DPM) filtration systems have been retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and have been subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durability of the tested DPF systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of particulate matter, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate their advantages and disadvantages. This paper also offers a review of selected experiences with the installation and operation of the DPF systems on underground mining vehicles at the Inco Stobie Mine.

The University of Maryland (UMD) has conducted a series of small-scale tests using explosive charges buried in saturated sand. Twelve different combinations of depth of burial of the charge and height of the target plate above the soil were tested. The target plates did not deform plastically. High-speed video was used to track the motion of the plate. The video data are analyzed to determine the position and velocity of the plate as a function of time. The results of this analysis are compared with computations performed at NRL using the BUB2D computer code. This code treats the saturated sand as an incompressible visco-plastic fluid which yields according to a Drucker-Prager (frictional-cohesive) yield surface. Comparisons of simulations with experiments are presented. In the cases examined so far, the velocity grows very quickly to a peak and then slows, first with a deceleration greater than one “g,” which then transitions to an approximately one “g” deceleration. An analysis of air drag on the plates has shown that its effect is negligible in the time span of interest. In all cases in which the BUB2D code can be applied, the computations compare favorably with the results of the data analysis. This suggests that the code and model used in the computation are properly capturing the physics of the interaction between the soil and a non-deforming plate.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some inillioils of tons of rich, copper-gold ore, averaging about 45% to 50% silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux.were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap, limestone, were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting operations started, with one' furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore fro:m. the mine, containing very little silica. When the second, furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from, small aeposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Eabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required viz, 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. "Modal data from Red Dog Main Pit ores were collected and analysed on a size-by-size basis. The Main Pit data were compared to data from composite samples of Red Dog Aqqaluk ores. The data revealed that a large fraction of the sphalerite in the Aqqaluk baritic ore was tied up in sphalerite/galena binaries. This provided an explanation for its poor leadlzinc selectivity compared to Main Pit ores. The Aqqaluk vein ore exhibited levels of sphalerite/galena binaries comparable to that of Main Pit ores resulting in comparable lead/zinc selectivity.An attempt was made to correlate the modal and metallurgical data for Main Pit stockpiles. It was found that there was moderate correlation between the percentage of sphalerite locked in binaries with galena in the <C5>C6 size fi-action and sphalerite deportment to the leadconcentrate.INTRODUCTIONTeck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in northern Alaska is one of the richest zinc districts in the world. Red Dog Mine has been in operation for over ten years and produces nearly 1 million tonnes of zinc concentrate per mum. Red Dog Mine is an open pit operation and current mining is conducted in the area known as the Main Pit. The Main Pit contains proven reserves of about 41 900 000 tonnes of ore grading 19.2% Zn and 5.2% Pb (Cominco 2000). To the north of the Main Pit is the Aqqaluk deposit. It contains probable reserves of 56 100 000 tonnes of ore grading 16.6% Zn and 4.1 % Pb. After the Main Pit has been exhausted, the Aqqaluk deposit will be exploited.The Aqqaluk deposit consists of three main geologic ore types: baritic, siliceous and vein. The siliceous ore type is dominant, representing 64% of the mineralisation. Composite samples of these ore types were created from drill core and batch flotation tests were performed on them. The flotation tests indicated that there were significant metallurgical differences between Main Pit ore and the Aqqaluk siliceous and baritic ore. The siliceous and baritic ores were found to suffer from poor lead/zinc selectivity (Lin 1999, G&T 1999). It was suspected that there were problems with the original Aqqaluk composite samples, thus a new set of composite samples were created and batch flotation tests were conducted again. In this set of tests, the new baritic ore still suffered from leadlzinc selectivity problems, but the new siliceous ore provided excellent metallurgical results. A summary of the flotation results is given in Table 1. Stockpile 132, which is typical of Main Pit ore, is given for comparison purposes. The mineral suite at Red Dog is relatively simple. The ore consists of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a silicate matrix. The low zinc recoveries of the baritic ore were largely due to sphalerite losses to the lead concentrate."

"Accurate on-line assays of mineral slurries are the basis for effective operation of flotation circuits. Typically the elemental content measurements are obtained by an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, which samples the process lines and performs the analysis concurrently line-by-line. For a more frequent measurement of each slurry line the XRF measurements can be complemented with reflectance spectrum information. In reflectance spectroscopy the absorbance properties of the slurry in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range are analyzed. The advantage of reflectance spectroscopy is that measurements can be obtained quickly and simultaneously from several slurry lines. However, since the shape of the spectrum is only indirectly affected by the slurry elemental contents, frequent calibration of the measurement against the XRF analyzer is necessary. This study elaborates the combination of reflectance spectrum analysis with XRF. Results of laboratory tests for different slurries are presented and the operation of the system in a copper-zinc flotation plant is demonstrated.IntroductionElemental analysis of mineral flotation slurries is the most important factor in evaluating the performance of concentration processes. Timely on-line assays are also used as the basis for controlling the circuits and ensuring that the grade and recovery targets are reached. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the dominant technology in on-line elemental slurry analysis, and typically centralized XRF analyzers are used. The advantage of a centralized analyzer is that one measurement probe can be used to acquire the data from several slurry lines. This reduces the overall operating cost of the system when compared to distributed analyzer system design with several measurement probes requiring maintenance and spare parts. Slurry samplers are installed in the interesting process flows and representative sample flows are brought to the analyzer, where the slurry is further sampled and measured consecutively by the XRF analyzer. Due to the centralized structure of the analyzers and consecutively measurement of the sampling lines the sampling interval per slurry line can be relatively long. In larger concentration plants with several sampling lines a typical assay interval is in the range of 10-20 minutes."

This Bureau of Mines study was made to obtain and present facts concerning the production and marketing of rare-earth metals and thorium in the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, referred to in this report as the region) and to review the current demand for these elements in the United States. Little or no published information was available on the marketing practices for these commodities. As a result of many inquiries from industry, potential prospectors, and the general public, the various factors of resources, production (present and potential), marketing, and consumption have been investigated, and the results are set forth in this report. Material concerning occurrences and deposits is from published references detailed in the bibliography.
