Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a PC based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

Contract Incentives have long been employed in the underground hardrock industry as a tool to influence employee performance, enhance productivity, and control labor costs. While traditionally structured to establish a direct correlation between performance and compensation, many contract programs have evolved into elaborate systems that promote strategies often viewed as independent of productivity. This paper presents the findings of research into these contract incentives and was conducted with the cooperation of 33 mines utilizing a spectrum of employee compensation and incentive programs. Emphasis of this analysis focuses on the types of production contracts observed and their role with respect to employee earnings.

The increase in depth of mines due to the depletion of surface deposits leads to unsafe tunnel construction and overall ore extraction. This is due to tunnel instability associated with the surrounding rock mass’s ability to exhibit creep that occurs over time. However, the explicit description of this mechanism using conventional constitutive models has proven to be difficult and inadequate. Hence, this paper presents an integrated viscoelastic viscoplastic visco-damage model with the Duvaut-Lions function. The presented model is calibrated by experimental data to determine the viscoelastic viscoplastic and visco-damage parameters. It is further implemented in a finite volume numerical code and verified on an experimental scale by numerical modeling of a cylindrical specimen. It describes the 3-phase creep mechanism perfectly as compared to the inbuilt conventional integer-order derivative model. Results from the conducted verification show that it can successfully be employed to describe the long-term behavior associated with the creep mechanism.

INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

The Bureau has identified several ventilation techniques and a water spray application for reducing auger mining dust levels. The dust control methods all work by improving air quantity or flow patterns at the face. Section airflow is maximized by reducing air leakage between entries. Sealing stoppings with brushed- on mortar, containing fiberglass additives, reduces leakage. Heading airflow is maximized by properly installing the brattice curtain and keeping the area between the curtain and rib free from obstructions. The brattice curtains should be hung at least 1.7 m (5.5 ft) from the ribs in 7.9 m (26 ft) wide entries and kept less than 4.6 m (15 ft) from the face. A tight curtain seal is created by using the mine air pressure to force the curtain against the timbers, roof and floor of the mine. Using both a blowing curtain and an exhausting curtain will isolate some face workers from dusty air. The Bureau designed, auger clearer spray system, can be used to force heading air across the active face. Laboratory tests indicate that the auger clearer spray system can increase face velocities by more than 0.5 m/sec (100 ft/min), while using less than 0.13 l/sec (2.0 gal/min) of water.

Pacific Rim markets for export coal already represent a larger market than the total tonnage imported into the European Community countries and they will continue to expand. The largest importers will continue to be in the sector comprising Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Tai- wan. It is likely that the total Pacific Rim markets will reach 206 m.t.p.a. by 1990 and 290 m.t.p.a. by 2000, with the major growth in steam coal demand. Australia has an efficient coal industry, represents a stable long term source of supply and is favourably situated geographically to continue to be the largest single supply source.

"A self-tramming remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) was developed by J. H. Fletcher and Co. under a contract with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) to reduce exposure of miners to airborne dust. NIOSH OMSHR laboratory testing showed that the DS averaged greater than 95% dust removal efficiency with the disposable filters and averaged 88% and 90%, respectively, for the optional washable filters in their pre-washed and post-washed test conditions. Although the washable filters could be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-minute washing period. The DS’s velocity pressure regulated variable frequency drive (VFD) fan maintained a relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.43 and 4.25 m3/s (3000 and 9000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60 Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the DS also showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier and the loaded filters increased sound levels as compared to clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity (1). The DS’s washable filters were not used during field testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated from filter washing. Field testing the DS with the disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it can clean a portion of the section return air and provide about a 50% dust reduction at the face area downstream of the continuous miner (CM) operation. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to coal and quartz dust continues to be a problem at underground coal mining operations in the U.S. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) recently changed the standard for coal mine worker respirable dust exposure from 2.0 mg/m3 average during an eight-hour shift to 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift, effective as of August 1, 2016 (1). If more than 0.1 mg/m3 quartz mass is found in the coal mine worker dust sample, the applicable respirable dust standard is further reduced to the quotient of 10 divided by the percentage of the quartz in the sample (1). Over 90% of the mechanized mining units operating in U.S. underground coal mines are continuous mining machines (2). MSHA inspector dust samples from 2009 to 2012 showed that 3.7% of continuous miner operators exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard, while 8.8% of these dust samples exceeded the new 1.5 mg/m3 dust standard and 9.7% of these samples exceeded the reduced quartz standard (3). Additionally, roof bolter dust samples at these mechanized mining units during this same period have exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3, 1.5 mg/m3, and reduced quartz levels at 1.1%, 3.7%, and 10.6%, respectively (3)."

Since the late 1970's, the Roof Control Division (RCD) of MSHA's Technical Support has been performing linear analyses for the enhancement of miners' safety. This remote sensing process uses Landsat data to predict areas of potentially hazardous ground conditions in underground mines. To date approximately 700 analyses have been completed by the RCD, with nearly 75 being performed with the current equipment, software and methodology which was updated in early 1995. While success is difficult to measure, requests for linear analyses continue to come from large and small mining companies which suggests the industry's acceptance of the process.

The behavior of non-sulphide gangue in chaloopyrite flotation circuits has been investigated. Plant and laboratory tests were carried out on five different ores, and linear relationships were found to exist between the rates of recovery of water and free nonsulphide gangue in the concentrates although there was evidence from pilot plant tests that these were linear approximations to parabolic curves over the limited regions which were observed. There was evidence that the free non-sulphide gangue enters the concentrate by hydraulic classification and a classification function has been proposed to define this behavior. This function is suitable for inclusion in a mathematical model of the process.

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. Accurate prediction of the partition coefficients in coal gravity separation is key to improving the preparation efficiency of coal and promoting its clean utilization. In China, the approximate formula method (AFM) has been applied to the calculation of coal gravity separation partition coefficients for decades, but its accuracy is limited. To improve the accuracy of the predicted partition coefficients, and thus the product yield of coal preparation plants, the present study proposes a modified hyperbolic tangent model to derive direct calculation formulas for the heavy medium and water medium separation partition coefficients. Four groups of coal samples were used to verify the accuracy of the direct formulas, and their predictions were compared with those of the AFM. The results showed that the partition coefficients and partition curves predicted by the direct formulas were closer to the actual values than those predicted by the AFM. Further, when the cleaned coal ash content was basically the same, the cleaned coal yield predicted by the direct formula was lower than that predicted by the AFM, and was also closer to the actual value. These results demonstrate that the direct formula produces more accurate results compared to the conventional AFM. As this formula has a reasonable theoretical basis, is simple to apply, and produces accurate results, it is expected to help improve the design and management level of coal preparation plants.

Since 1980 a number of significant changes have been introduced at Palabora in an effort to off-set the effects of reduced product price and increased unit cost of inputs. These changes and improvements include major equipment rationalization programs, the introduction of trolley assisted truck haulage, adoption of a sophisticated computerized truck control system, pit design enhancements, improved drilling practices, use of emulsion explosives and the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying system. The various changes, their effect on the operation and their contribution to cost reduction and improved productivity at Palabora are considered.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. INTRODUCTION Classification of coal seams as thin, medium, and thick is both subjective and relative and is more a reflection of the statistical mode of the thicknesses en- countered in a mining region. A geological factor more precisely understood as defined than thickness is the inclination of the seams to the horizontal, commonly referred to as the pitch or the dip of the seam. Thick and steeply pitching seams present far more challenges to the ingenuity of the mining men to devise methods for their extraction than the thick and less steeply inclined ones. In a marginal case, where a thick coal seam may be minable by surface or underground methods, the decision bears a close relationship to the technological developments in the mining scene. Near surface thick coal seams are a special gift of nature and are not as wide- spread as the ones that call for the application of under- ground methods. Recent advancements in surface mining equipment have made it possible to surface mine to great depths. Stripping ratios of 30: 1 (cu yd of over- burden removed per ton of coal) have been achieved. The extraction of thick seams which preclude the use of surface methods is the concern of this chapter. Specifically, the objective here is to outline the special technological factors in underground mining of thick coal seams and to illustrate through several case histories the methods that are practiced in the North American continent. For the purposes of this chapter, a thick seam is defined as one which is not readily minable with currently available equipment without modifications to the extraction method or the equipment. At the present time, a thickness of 4.8 m (16 ft) can be considered as the lower limit, although developments in equipment and methods can be expected to push this limit upwards. The data for the case histories were collected from two extended mine visits in 1975 and 1978, and from other published accounts of the mines visited. Reference is drawn particularly to reports by Bise, Ramani, and Stefanko (1976) and Rarnani and Kenzy (1979). THICK SEAM MINING METHODS The various methods of mining thick seams can generally be grouped into three major categories: full face methods, where the entire thickness of the seam is re- covered in a single pass; slicing methods, where the seam is extracted to its full thickness by horizontal or inclined slices either in an ascending or descending order; and caving methods, where the seam is undercut and the en- tire coal seam is recovered by caving the top coal into the excavated cut, or some variations of the basic sub- level caving method. As shown in Table 1, in each of these methods, the coal is removed by either room-and-pillar or longwall methods. Hydraulic mining and transport of the coal in open flumes or in pipelines are also practiced. Addition- ally, the void created by the removal of coal may be filled with a packing material (stowing) except in the caving methods. The pitch (dip) of the seam, particularly when it is greater than 0.26 rad (150), imposes severe operational limitations on mobile equipment. A more detailed general discussion of the methods can be found in Bise et al. (1976) and Vorobjev and Deshmukh (1964). The value addition potential of ilmenite was examined using several characterization techniques. Raw ilmenite is composed of 93.65 wt.% of FeOTiO2, 3.55 wt.% of SiO2, 1.22 wt.% of Al2O3, and the remainder being other minor oxides. Ilmenite and powdered carbonized coconut shells were mixed in the weight ratio of 4:1. A separate fraction of the same mixture was added with powdered seashells in the weight ratio of 4:1:0.5. Six fractions of each mixture were distinctly milled from 1 to 6 h in a planetary ball mill. XRD spectra (broadened and diminished reflections of ilmenite) and FTIR observations (Ti―O―Cbonding) of milled samples indicate the possible incorporation of carbon into the ilmenite structure. Any clues of an occurrence of new rutile peaks were not observed in XRD spectra of milled samples. Consequently, the carbothermic reduction has not been initiated during mechanical activation. In this case, samples powdered for 6 h in a mill were isothermally annealed for 2 h under normal airflow at temperatures of 800 °C, 1000 °C, and 1200 °C, respectively. According to the X-ray diffractograms, the annealing temperatures of 1000 °C and 1200 °C exhibited almost similar trends with rutile (R), pseudobrookite (PB) and elemental iron (F), and a very few ilmenite (I) peaks. Consequently, 6 h of milling and 1000 °C annealing were concluded as the optimum conditions for the carbothermic reduction. Moreover, this study indicated seashells as a potential rate raiser for the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite at 800 °C. Therefore, this process is applicable to upgrade ilmenite into a mixture of synthetic rutile and elemental iron.

"The design of an appropriate pre-grouting program can be the difference between a successful tunnel construction and an expensive on-the-go repair. However, current grout design relies heavily on rulesof- thumb and outdated charts. The geotechnical investigation is rarely targeted towards grouting design and the final grouting decisions are made based on fines content or soil classification. The current paper presents an experimental study performed to determine the optimal grout for a tunnel in soft ground below the ground water table (GWT). The testing program consisted of sieve analysis and undrained static triaxial tests on reconstituted sonic samples. Rheological tests were used to compare the different grout mixes and identify best candidates before performing one-dimensional permeation tests. Pressure and volume measurements during the permeation tests, along with the unconfined compression strength results on the permeated soils, helped evaluate the filtration potential for the different grouts and select the optimal grout.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Project commenced in 2009 and was expected to be completed by 2015. To facilitate ongoing city development in south Edmonton, the City implemented construction of a major sanitary trunk network along 91st Street and 30th Avenue. The project involved the design and construction of approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) of 7.8-ft (2,400 mm) sanitary tunnel and 2.1 miles (3.4 km) of 11.5-ft. (3,500 mm) and 9.5-ft. (2,900 mm) storm tunnel. Part of the project also involved the conversion of the existing double barrel storm and sanitary trunk to full sanitary service, and reconnecting the local storm sewers from the double barrel pipe to the new storm tunnel. The tunnels range in depth from 26-ft. (8 m) to 115-ft. (35 m) and are being installed using a one pass system with precast concrete segmental liners."
