Recent experience has shown that all underground workplaces in the Campine Coalfield in Belgium will require controlled cooling within three years. Considering the socio-economic and legal importance of the climatic problems underground, IREA has undertaken studies in forecasting the climate of future workplaces, planning the necessary cooling equipment and optimizing efficiency in the existing cooling equipment. These studies are being carried out using the climate forecasting program of Bergbau-Forschung. So far, the German model has been obliged to utilize manually measured data from a few workplaces in the Campine. As the model does not fit very well with these measurements, it has been thought necessary to' develop a system of continuous data acquisition and transmission. This system is being tested in the Beringen mine of the N.V. Kempense Steenkollenmijnen. In the first part of this paper the digital tranmission system is described; in the second the sensors used to collect the necessary climatic data are presented, and in the third some results are given.

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores. The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Back-analysis of two mining-induced tremors in 2011 was used to determine a modelling criterion for the entire Klerksdorp Goldfield (i.e., Vaal Reefs region). At that time, most mining operations in the region were owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and shared many geotechnical similarities. By 2018 AGA had sold off all its Klerksdorp operations to different mining companies, which continued applying the 2011 modelling criterion. As mining activities became more remote, scattered, and isolated, the extraction of isolated blocks of ground and remnants became increasingly necessary. However, the inherited criterion allowed only minimal or no mining activities at these areas. Keeping in mind that safety is the overriding consideration, an innovative numerical modelling approach, which includes the application of peak particle velocity designs, was developed to provide practitioners in the Klerksdorp Goldfield with a suitable criterion to justifiably and safely mine isolated blocks of ground and remnants. This would not always be possible if a conformist approach was used.

Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. This paper outlines an investigation into the recovery of saleable fractions of coal from ?as-arising? South Export Plant effluent streams, using Baleen microscreening technology. South Export Plant, a subdivision of BHP Billiton Energy Coal SA (BECSA) Coal Processing, is a two-module plant treating 2000 t/h. The nominally -150 µm coal is untreated and is therefore passed from classifying cyclones to the thickeners for process water recovery. The thickened underflow is pumped into a series of slurry cells for further settling and recovery of supernatant water. The marginal quality, moisture content, and handlebility of this settled material renders it unsuitable for inclusion into saleable products and it is thus stockpiled and trucked to designated pits for disposal. Over the years, stockpiling and trucking has become an overly expensive exercise. In an effort to recover some of this cost, a task team was assigned to investigate less costly options to process slurry across BECSA plants. Various technologies such as froth flotation, sieve bends, and Reflux Classifier were considered, although the results were generally not beneficial ? this could be attributed to weathered/oxidized coal. A decision was made to pursue an alternative approach by testing the suitability of the new ?Baleen Filter?. The concept is to screen out the higher-grade fraction (+50 µm) as saleable product and reject the finer fractions to the slurry ponds. The Baleen Filter was found to effectively screen at an acceptable efficiency between 94% and 99.99%, with a very sharp cut-point (d50 and Ep). The actual yields from the screening results were better than the predicted yields in terms of both mass and energy as predicted from feedstock analysis.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

Tanzania is a country with a variety of mineral deposits, including metallic minerals, gemstones, mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and critical minerals. This study provides an overview of mining legal framework, mineral occurrence and production, challenges in the mining sector, and government initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate the development of the mining sector in Tanzania and explore the potential for further mining investment in the country. The mineral production data showed generally increasing trends over the years, for example, gold production increased from 42 tonnes in 2018/2019 to around 50 tonnes in 2023/2024. Despite the growth, the mining sector encounters several challenges, including a lack of detailed geological information on mineral deposits, inadequate infrastructures in some remote mining sites, the existence of informal artisanal miners, and mineral smuggling. The Tanzanian government has introduced several initiatives to address these challenges, including carrying out the highresolution airborne geophysical survey to increase geological information in some areas, the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, establishing mineral markets to combat mineral smuggling, and encouraging mineral value addition within the country.

The surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar were investigated by XPS, zeta potential measurements and first principle calculation. The results indicated that the zeta potential of feldspar was more negative than that of spodumene. The most possible active sites on spodumene and feldspar were Al sites and O sites. However, the number, type and activity of these sites were different. The flotation behaviour of five new collectors (cationic collector decyloxy-propyl-amine (DPA), anionic collector α-bromododecanoic acid (α-BDDA), N-Dodecyliminodiacetic acid (DIDA), and mixed collector DPA-BDDA and DPA-DIDA) were investigated through micro flotation experiments and analysed based on the surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar. The results revealed that cationic collector DPA processed a high collecting capacity for both minerals. The highest recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 91.60% and 95.30% respectively. The anionic collector α-BDDA and DIDA showed poor flotation behaviour. The recovery of spodumene and feldspar when using α-BDDA as collector was less than 5% and when using DIDA as collector was less than 1%. For the mixed collector DPA-BDDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 82.27% and 32.61% respectively at pH 4.5. For mixed collector DPA-DIDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 35.69% and 9.08% respectively at pH 5.8. The results indicated that the cationic collector had high collecting capacity, but low selectivity. The collecting capacity of anionic collector for spodumene and feldspar was poor at the same concentration compared with cationic collectors. Mixed collector DPA-BDDA showed good flotation behaviour and selectivity on spodumene. The ―COO- in mixed collector might improve the selectivity. However, too much ―COO- would increase the electrostatic repulsion, which might cause low selectively and poor recovery. 1. Book review • World mineral statistics 1974 to 1978. Production: Exports: Imports. London, H.M.S.O., Institute of Geological Sciences, 1980. (Reviewer: R. P. King) This edition is the third in a regular series prepared by the Institute of Geological Sciences. It is a useful compilation of statistics on the production, export, and import of fifty-eight different mineral commodities. Each mineral is listed by country, and a table is provided for the annual production, the annual imports, and the annual exports for each commodity included. However, some commodities are treated in considerably more detail; for example, aluminium and bauxite have tables under the following headings: Production of Bauxite, Production of Alumina, Production of Primary Aluminium, Exports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium, Imports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium. The information presented is the latest official information available from primary sources; the compilers have not relied on data from secondary compilations. This publication will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the trading of mineral commodities and their production.

The intention is to solve a series of problems in the flotation and desiliconisation of complex bauxite; aiming to achieve monomer dissociation of target minerals based on process mineralogy. According to the mineral surface, there are differences in physical and chemical properties and the molecular design theory of flotation agents. Designing the polar and non-polar groups of the bauxite flotation collector to make the reagent group easily combine with the mineral to form a cyclic chelate, will enhance the collection performance, and strengthen the drug selection performance. A two-dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the reduction of kilogram quantities of dehydrated phosphogypsum. The model’s scope has been limited to focus on the heat transfer and reactions that occur within a mass of material contained in a vessel inside a furnace rather than also including the effects of heat transfer to the vessel. Changes in the heat transfer properties (k, ρ, and Cp) are incorporated as the composition of the mass changes as the chemical reactions progress. The model is validated against experimental data, with samples heated to 1000°C at 3°C min−1 while purging with nitrogen gas. A sensitivity analysis of model predictions to the pre-exponential factor of the reaction rate constant of the main chemical reaction and the thermal conductivity of the powder bed indicated that, at the envisaged process conditions, the behaviour of the system depends much more on the rate of heat transfer than on the rate of the chemical reaction. The model demonstrated a significant increase in accuracy when the thermal conductivity was modelled to increase linearly with temperature compared to assuming a constant value.

Methane explosions in underground coal mines are a major concern across the mining industry. After the Pike River disaster, Arnot Coal became even more aware of the explosion risk. To determine whether Arnot has adequate precautions against a methane explosion, such as the one that led to the Pike River disaster, a literature survey covering the causes of the incident and what preventative measures should have been in place was conducted. Many different methane explosion prevention methods were evaluated, as well as codes of practice. Based on the findings, Arnot?s measures to prevent conditions favourable for a methane explosion were evaluated.

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. The initial evaluation of a coal deposit often raises uncertainty with regard to the accuracy of the reported Resources and Reserves. Reconciliation of results from mining and beneficiation with the original raw field data highlights deficiencies in original estimations. Credible Resource and Reserve estimation forms the basis on which an entire mining enterprise is motivated, initiated, funded, and established as a commercially viable proposition. This is required for sustainable extraction purposes and to support vital downstream industries such as power generation. Accurate determination of the density of the matrix of the material being evaluated is the key to credible values being obtained for Resources and Reserves. Losses between 15% and 20% of the Resource/Reserve can be realized if incorrect densities are applied to the tonnage derivation. Coal plies and particles have different relative densities, determined by the maceral composition, rank, and mineral and moisture content. These factors in turn contribute to the moisture, volatile matter, ash and carbon contents of a coal, which affect the overall density of the raw coal. More specifically, the relationship of ash to density and the effective matrix porosity were found to be critical in solving the greater majority of the problems in predictive calculations. A major deficiency identified is the inability to determine effective porosity, allowing absorption of adventitious moisture and altering the mass of the core sample. Although the volume of the raw material is altered through crushing, the change in mass after controlled air-drying, used with the original geometrical volume of the raw material, provides a credible air-dry density and allows the determination of the volumetric change related to effective porosity. This parameter can be validated through the evaluation of proximate ash using the ash-adjusted algorithm and a correction for the inherent moisture applied to also give a credible relative density value for an air-dried sample. A combination of theoretical, empirical, and reconciliatory evaluations of the available data, taken from the exploration phase through the mining process to final production, has shown that an integrated approach using the ash-adjusted density (AAD) methodology, in conjunction with other evaluative techniques, provides credible results with a considerably higher degree of accuracy than is currently possible.

Awards for inventions For inventing devices of exceptional value to the mining industry, two mining men were presented with awards in Johannesburg on 25th November, 1982, under the Chamber of Mines' Ideas and Suggestions Scheme. Mr W. W. Malan, President of the Chamber of Mines, made the presentations.
