"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is generally obtained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine in back of the cutting head. Mounting the nozzles on the rotating head of the machine closer to the coal cutting bits may improve the efficiency of dust suppression. To test this concept, respirable dust measurements were made during 39 regular production shifts in an underground mine using a Joy 11CM continuous miner. The equipment used, difficulties encountered, and measurements obtained are described.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

The work of the United States Bureau of, Mines is concerned primarily with the prevention of accidents in the mining, petroleum, and allied industries. This report analyzes the fatal accidents in the coal mines of Tennessee and gives the pertinent factors in tabular and descriptive form, with interpretations and suggestions to operators, workers, and the State Division of Mines for the future prevention or reduction of accidents in coal mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This study was made possible through the cooperation of A. W. Evans, chief mine inspector of Tennessee, and his secretary, Miss Hiliary Penny, who made available the department records and assisted in the segregation and assembly of the data.

The applicability of a rotating drum with an attached trommel as a flocculation dewatering device of Florida phosphatic claywastes was studied. Several experiments were conducted in order to determine the important fabrication and operating parameters. Results from the experiments indicated flint the dosage of polyethylene oxide required to form a satisfactory product cake could be reduced by using the rotary drum, which introduces less shear stress into the fluid than a constant stirred tank mixer. It was found that the length of the mixer was the most important parameter. Increased length increased the retention time the flocs stayed in the mixer without dewatering. Such increased time decreased the stability of the flocs. Through analysis of residence time distribution data it was found that the longer mixers approached plug flow characteristics. Other important parameters were trommel length and rotational speed. Mixers from 10 cm diameter to 35.6 cm diameter were tested with good results.

This report describes a program whose objective was to develop, design, fabricate and laboratory-test two prototype instruments capable of real-time selective detection and measurement of airborne fibrous-shaped particles. The operation of this fibrous aerosol monitor (FAM) is based on the rotation imparted to the acicular particles by means of a rotating quadrupole electric field of the order of 3000 V/cm. This field induces a dipole charge separation on the fibers and aligns them with the applied field. The selective detection of the fibers is effected by synchronous detection of the resulting modulation of the light scattered from a continuous-wave helium-neon laser beam by the rotating particles. The theory of operation, design of the electric-optical detection configuration and the electronic signal processing method are discussed. By means of a scattering pulse sharpness discrimination technique, fibers whose length exceed a selectable value are detected and their number concentration digitally displayed. Counting times of 1 to 1000 minutes permit the measurement of fiber concentrations between 0.001 and about 30 cm-3. A concentration of the order of one fiber per cubic centimeter can be assessed within a relative standard deviation of 10 percent with a counting period of 10 minutes. The FAM is a portable, battery-powered instrument capable of operating continuously for about 4 hours between battery charges. Preliminary tests with crocidolite and crysotile asbestos as well as with glass fibers were performed in the laboratory and the results indicate good correlation with the standard NIOSH phase contrast microscopy filter counting method.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 475 natural gas samples from 17 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 454 samples were collected during calendar year 1971. The remaining 21 samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the analyses were not received until 1971. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Thirteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,427 gas analyses prior to 1971. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The underground junction or intersection is analogous to the doorway or window in a building in that the continuous wall or support for the overhead structure has been weakened by making the opening. Some type of bridge or support seems necessary to prevent roof sag and possibly eventual failure at this point, although frequently it appears that little is done until a fatal accident induces action. The intersection generally represents less than 15 percent of the exposed roof area. As a result of recent multiple fatalities, some of which occurred at or near intersections, the Bureau of Mines was asked to examine the junction-support problem more thoroughly and to report its findings. A national survey of the junction-support systems in use has been made by correspondence, and the local area has been canvassed rather thoroughly to determine just what and how much is being done.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines Studied 25,340 acres of the 28,960-acre Twelve Mile Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-162) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 30 miles northwest of McDermitt, NV. The area is underlain by thick sequences of rhyolite to with lesser amounts of andesite and basalt flows. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature, mining records, and examined the study area for possible mineral resources in geologically favorable sites. There are no organized mining districts and no record of past or current mining activity. Based on sample results, published literature and field observations, there are no identified mineral resources.

Tracor MBA under a contract to U.S. DOI Bureau of Mines designed, developed, fabricated and demonstrated a conveyor belt service machine. It is self-contained, battery powered, rubber tired and capable of handling, storing and transporting conveyor belting, wire rope and associated structures for sectional conveyor belts. While moving the tail section to its next position the machine discharges the belting, wire rope and belt structures. The belting is elevated and separated to provide for the insertion of the structures with minimum expended effort. A hydraulic system provides the power for steering, braking, winding or unwinding under controlled tension the belting and wire rope, operating a load-bed slat conveyor, raising, lowering and locking connection hitches and powering external hydraulic tools. Also, a pneumatic system is available to operate air impact tools. The service machine, with its present components can function in coal seams as thin as 48 inches, double wind conveyor belting 42 inches wide, 400 feet long, load or unload 3/4" wire rope on two separate reels and is controlled by two operators. A complete belt move using this machine requires only four workers. Successful underground demonstrations were conducted in coal mines located in West Virginia and Kentucky.

From the time when man first pounded one rock upon another or used heat and sudden chilling with water to disintegrate rock, the art of crushing advanced but slowly to the mule-driven arrastre and the Chilean mill stage until the advent of power-driven appliances made material progress possible. The combined efforts of manufacturers and operators have made modern machines highly efficient mechanically. Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or the Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere.

Assessment of workplace exposures is an important tool for helping to minimize dust-related occupational illness and diseases. Real-time particulate monitoring can effectively locate areas where dust controls are needed and determine how well they are working. An affordable, person-wearable, real-time dust monitor is needed. The SKC Inc. Dust Detective (SKCDD) fulfills those requirements (Disclaimer: Mention of any company or product does not imply endorsement by NIOSH). The SKCDD consists of a disposable sampling tube (DST) connected to a small hand-held sampling pump. The SKCDD was developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and SKC Inc. The relationship of dust concentrations measured by personal gravimetric samplers to those measured by the SKCDD was determined in a laboratory aerosol chamber. A comparison of the means and the relative standard deviation of triplicate measurements of each type of sampling device demonstrated the SKCDD to be a viable alternative means for measuring dust. While it provides accurate measurements for specific coal types, it requires correction factors (those correction factors still need to be calculated) for other coal types.

The investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram is part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to investigate rare-earth alloys. Data from the investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram revealed a single eutectic system with very limited terminal solubility and three intermediate phases. The eutectic point occurs at about 85 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 850° C., extends from the compound Fe2Gd to 99-plus percent gadolinium. Very little solubility of the solid phases in each other was observed. The three intermediate phases, FegGd, Fe3Gd, and FeaGd, melt incongruently at peritectic isotherms at 1,320°, 1,150°, and 1,080° C., respectively. The crystalline systems of the three phases were determined as follows: FegGd, hexagonal; Fe3Gd, hexagonal or rhombohedral; and FeaGd, face-centered cubic. No lowering or raising of the alpha-gamma iron transformation at 910° C., the gamma-delta iron transformation at 1,388° C., or the gadolinium transformation at 1,262° C. was observed. The principal methods used in determining the iron-gadolinium phase diagram were melting-point determinations, thermal analyses, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Melting, heat treating, and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or under a helium atmosphere because of the avidity with which oxygen combines with gadolinium at elevated temperatures. A few hardness values were determined, but they had no part in the derivation of the phase diagram. No other mechanical properties were determined.

It details both common and unique engineering methods by which the respirable dust, which is generated in coal mines, can be controlled. This document was compiled by Apt, Bramer, Conrad and Associates, Inc. under contract number H0111464, issued by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and forms Volume II of the final report. Portable communications equipment is becoming increasingly important in underground mining. Proper selection of microphones and hearing devices to be part of these communication systems is essential if the messages are to be transmitted intelligibly. In this program a thorough study of the requirements for these transducers was made with respect to intelligibility, mechanical configuration, human factors and safety. A computer analysis was made to predict how several combinations of transducers would perform at typical mining noise levels. A survey has been made of those microphones and hearing devices on the market today that might be applicable to the miner communication system. Several systems are proposed and evaluated.

This report represents the first comprehensive accounting of lode mining sites in the Sheep Mountain mining district, Custer County, Idaho. Twenty-one mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of a mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; previously known locations were checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's deposits are mainly confined to metasedimentary xenoliths in granodiorite and quartz monzonite. Those deposits in the north and west parts of the district are lead-silver-zinc replacement veins in dominantly calcareous facies; those in the southern part of the district are polymetallic fissure-veins containing pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite hosted by micaceous schist and phyllite. The dominant structural trend in the southern part of the district is northwesterly and on strike with major deposits in the adjacent Seafoam mining district.

ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines experiments in purifying sulfate leach liquors, which were prepared from low-tenor beryl concentrates by modifying the Degussa process. The leach liquor was prepared from a beryl concentrate containing 2.7 percent BeO by (1) sintering the beryl concentrate with limestone in a rotary kiln at about 1,150° C. and by (2) treating the sinter first with sulfuric acid and then with water to form and extract beryllium sulfate. About 80 percent of the beryllium was dissolved. The resulting leach liquor contained 2.4 grams of BeO, 20 grams of Al203, and 6 grams of Fe203 per liter. The laboratory solution contained much more aluminum and iron than a solution derived from treating 10 percent BeO concentrate, which is the standard raw material used by industry. Tests were made to determine the behavior of the solution toward alum purification and limestone neutralization both of which were employed industrially in conventional Degussa procedure.
