Rock mass characterisation is a critical component of effective stope design. Unexpected excessive stope dilution or uneconomic stope sizes can be the result of rock mass characterisation that is not representative of actual stope conditions. Comprehensive characterisation of the rock forming the stope hanging wall, back, ends and footwall is best done by a rock mechanics or ground control expert, however, this is time consuming and is often limited by available access. There are two general approaches for characterising a stope hanging wall for dilution estimating. Detailed classification and mapping data can be collected in local areas where good exposure is available. Personnel, exposure and time are usually not available to do a thorough analysis for all stopes. The stope hanging walls are then broken into lenses or domains and similar conditions are assumed for each area. The second approach consists of using readily available data such as RQD. Other rock mass properties which influence hanging wall behaviour are estimated based on back analysing a few case histories. Stope design is then based on the variability of the one parameter, such as RQD, that is consistently measured for the rock mass surrounding the ore body. This paper presents a third approach which looks, in depth, at the interpretation of geological core logging data for rock mass characterisation. Several rock mass properties that influence stope design, such as joint alteration, rock mass strength, joint spacing and orientations, have been linked to data collected by the mine geologists. This drill hole logging data was calibrated against underground mapping and used to back analyse the dilution prediction for mined-out stopes.

This paper presents ground control best practices in weak rock environments including the "Unsupported" Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve and awareness pertaining to the potentially detrimental effects of using resin grouted rebar in weak rock masses and the false sense of security that the use of resin grouted rebar may instill. Ground support is almost always used in weak rock environments, though the type of support used can vary widely. The development of the Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve by the addition of 463 case histories of RMR76 values ranging from 25 to 60, has also been calibrated to four different support categories; Category A: Pattern Friction Sets, Category B: Pattern Friction Sets with Spot Bolting of Rebar, Category C: Pattern Friction Sets with Pattern Rebar Bolts and Category D: Cablebolting, Shotcrete, Spiling, Timber Sets or Underhand Cut and Fill. Design of underground man-entry type excavations in North America relies heavily upon empirical analysis. This design requires a higher Factor of Safety than other non-man entry type excavations. A comparison of the calculated ½ span failure Factor of Safety between all the categories is also presented.

"Molybdenite flotation at the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex has been studied as a function of pulp potential controlled using two types of sodium sulfide (mineral and chemical origin). Air and either plant or laboratory nitrogen was used as a flotation carrier. Potential measurements were taken in the rougher cells as it was proved to be vital for molybdenite flotation. Flotation test with reducing potentials between -525 and -575 mv gave the highest molybdenum recovery (93%) and the lowest copper recovery of between 4 to 15% can be achieved. These potentials did not change considerably by adding increasing amounts of sodium sulfide. At more oxidizing potentials, i.e. more than -450 mv, the recovery of copper increases while the recovery of Molybdenite drops.INTRODUCTIONThe average copper ore feed grade to the Sarcheshmeh flotation circuit is typically set at about 1.2% Cu. to be delivered to processing unit is set at 1.2%. There is no control of molybdenum (Mo) which usually varies between 0.01 and 0.04%. During concentration, a Cu-Mo concentrate is produced by one stage of roughing, one stage of scavenging and two stages of cleaning. Final concentrate contains 0.5% of Mo and 32% of Cu while the particle size is 90% under 42 microns (325 mesh). Because of the high grade of Mo in this concentrate and economic interests, a molybdenite flotation circuit plant was built in 1984. This plant was designed to treat 1432 tons of Cu-Mo concentrate (on dry basis) and consists of one stage of roughing followed by seven stages of cleaning. After dewatering the concentrate contains 53.7% Mo which is dried and shipped overseas.The majority of molybdenite production worldwide comes as byproduct of copper porphyry ores. The Mo grade typically varies between 0.01 and 0.06% and accompanies chalcopyrite and chalcocite. Due to the hydrophobic nature of molybdenite, it can be floated along with copper sulfides. Thus the overall concentrate of Cu and Mo contains 0.2-1% of molybdenum as well as 20-42% of copper. To separate the Mo, Cu and Fe minerals, depressants are used. The most important of which are sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide, Anomal D, sodium cyanide, ferropottasium and ferro-cyanide. The first three regeants have been extensively used for successfully treating porphyry ores [1]. In the molybdenum plant of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex only sodium sulfide has been used to date."

"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

The Otter-Juan mine was closed by WMC Resources? Kambalda Nickel Operations (WMC-KNO) in 1999 due to the combined effects of low Nickel prices and high mining costs. GBF Mining Pty Ltd purchased Otter-Juan Mine from WMC in early 2001 as part of WMC?s disinvestment from the nickel mines in the Kambalda area. Goldfields Mine Management (GMM), (a wholly owned subsidiary of GBF Pty Ltd) re-opened Otter-Juan in May 2001. The Otter-Juan mine is one of the oldest mines in the Kambalda region and is now mining at depths below 1160mbs. Stresses are very high, rock mass deformation considerable, and the mine has a history of serious seismic activity. Orebody widths in the current mining area range from 2 to 2.5m, with dips from 25° to 40°. On taking over the operation, GMM converted the mining method from the previous mechanised drift and fill method to a slot-rise and strip method using hand held airlegs. During the latter years of production under the control of WMC, production averaged around 12000 tonnes per month, with grades of 2.7% and orebody extraction of only 55 to 60%. In the last three years of operation under the control of GMM the mine has produced an average of 12000 tonnes per month of ore at an average grade of 4.2% and with an orebody extraction of 70 to 75%. The mine is now highly profitable with at least another 3 years of reserves remaining at depth. The main benefits of the current method include reduced dilution and increased extraction. In the relatively poor ground conditions experienced this has only been possible using airleg mining, with excavations designed to suit conditions, support to suit rockmass deformations, and with improved extraction sequencing. Other benefits have included improved operating conditions, reduced falls of ground incidents and a dramatic reduction in seismic activity. These achievements have only been possible by stepping back in time and using traditional airleg stoping methods to extract the maximum amount of the orebody with minimum dilution. This paper includes details of the mine history, geology, mining method, seismicity, and support.

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. Over the last few years a multi-faceted feasibility study has been evaluating the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell powered equipment into underground mines to replaced diesel engine powered equipment. The analysis has shown that under normal operating conditions fuel cells could at the very least be an environmental and health benefit by eliminating combustion engines and their unwanted by-products. However, they could also generate significant reductions in the amount of ventilation a mine needs to supply when compared to dieselized operations; this would further decrease a mine?s energy consumption, its associated greenhouse gas impact and also reduce a mine?s significant ventilation associated costs. Fuel cell powered equipment also has the advantage of lower noise and heat production compared to their equivalent diesel powered counterpart. The degree to which fuel cells can generate ventilation benefits in underground mines depends upon a number of operational parameters and mine specific qualifiers such as current ventilation control or management, mine depth, inherent dust conditions and minimum velocity requirements. However another major consideration in the introduction of fuel cells in underground mines will be the safety requirements associated with diluting and removing the potentially explosive hydrogen in the event of a gas leak. In outside surface applications, it is possible to use dispersion, buoyancy, time, and lack of ignition sources as mitigating factors in deriving a low risk of an explosion. However, in underground operations these factors change, dispersion and buoyancy are limited; time may not be available and in non-coal mines ignition sources are not typically controlled. When a hydrogen leak occurs, the availability of sufficient ventilation to dilute and effectively remove the gas will be critical, consequently ventilation may be the prime risk controlling factor. In this paper, the authors evaluate the potential benefits of replacing diesel engines with fuel cells in powered production equipment, discuss the mitigating qualifiers that could limit ventilation savings and evaluate solutions to retain and maintain an additional ventilation capacity in the event of an emergency situation such as a hydrogen leak from the fuel cell stack or its distribution system.

IAMGOLD?s Westwood project is the site for the largest, by volume, bored vent raise in North America. When completed, it will be the fifth largest bored worldwide in a single pass. This paper will review the highest capacity raise drill system ever built (Redbore 100); as well as the technical difficulties in a single pass boring a 2,773 ft x 20 ft to 22 ft diameter raise. Understanding the appropriate gold recovery to associate with copper recovery when assessing laboratory testing on porphyry deposits is often complicated by several factors including variable and/or complex mineralogy, and the variability contributed by the low Au content of the various flotation products. As a result, gold recovery is often underestimated and the value contributed by the gold to project economics is less than it should be, a problem that could influence overall project viability. Typically, for these types of deposits, the gold recovery is found to be lower than the copper recovery. In this unique project, having the objective of seeking a better understanding of gold recovery relative to copper recovery, mill feed samples from a selection of six operating world-class Cu-Au low-grade deposits were collected along with the mill metallurgical results for the corresponding sample periods. The samples were subjected to laboratory flotation tests, as well as the Laplante gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test, mineralogical assessment and cyanidation leaching. The aim was to better understand the copper and gold recovery relationship, the links between laboratory and plant flotation performance, the influence of mineralogical differences, and the potential for enhancing gold recovery by gravity recovery techniques. A new correlation of copper and gold recoveries based on the results is presented in the paper. The results showed that the link between copper and gold recoveries established in the best laboratory tests were maintained in the plant results, and further, that the potential for improving Au recovery by gravity or flash flotation methods is directly proportional to the amount of gold greater than 75 microns.

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."

A strain-softening constitutive relationship is introduced that describes the post-failure stress-strain curve for rock regardless of whether the rock is intact or broken. The core of this relationship is an ?apparent friction? concept that relates the post-failure apparent cohesive and frictional characteristics of the rock to the strain. The relationship can be determined for a given rock via a series of tri-axial strength tests establishing the peak strength and corresponding strain for a range of confining pressures, together with the determination of the base angle of friction via a simple tilt test. The postulates and assumptions used in deriving this relationship are verified from results of tri-axial tests on both intact and broken rock.

The application of underground pre-concentration technology to narrow vein mining has the potential to change the entire economics of bulk mining methods when used in narrow vein situations. The rejection of waste at or near the face means that a higher-grade ore can be sent to surface. The waste rock can be reused directly as backfill. Swelling of the muck through blasting means that only 60 to 65% can be used as fill. Planning and scheduling of the fill usage is key to the success of this method. Through the use of simulation and system analysis, this paper examines the planning and scheduling implications of underground pre-concentration when applied to traditional narrow vein mining methods (cut-and-fill /drift-and-fill, longhole, AVOCA). It considers the logistical factors that represent potential system bottlenecks that are key to understanding the correct implementation and control strategies.
