A continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based constitutive model has been developed to describe elastic, plastic and damage behavior of rock during drilling. In addition to inelastic deformations, this model incorporates rock anisotropies like toughness anisotropy due to the bedding planes orientation that is a common observation in soft Shales. The pressure sensitive inelastic deformation of porous rocks together with their damage mechanisms are studied for drained and undrained conditions. Fracture mechanics of microcrack and micro-void nucleation and their coalescence are incorporated into the formulation of the CDM models to accurately capture different rock failure modes. The performance of the developed elastoplastic and CDM models are compared with the available single cutter test data of a specific shale play and then the models are introduced into a commercial finite element package through user-defined subroutines. A workflow to derive the required model parameters is presented through inverse modelling of the single cutter test data. The developed CDM model outperforms the traditional discrete element and fracture mechanics approaches by removing stress singularities at the fracture tips and simulation of progressive fractures like formation of the cuttings ribbon without any essential need for remeshing. This model would provide a robust tool for modeling bit performance and rate of penetration using conventional elements of FEA with a reliable results and a computational cost less than similar computational techniques like discrete element methods.

I N Part I of this paper, Professor Morrison suggested that our technique of causing cracks to develop around openings in a sheet of photoe1ashc plastic is, in effect, a laboratory-scale rockburst. Our investigations have indicated that the location and direction of these cracks are predictable, and that their growth can be controlled. On several occasions, we have been able to cause these cracks to propagate sufficiently slowly to be followed, with the naked eye. In practice, the rate of growth, gradual or sudden, would depend upon rock properties. This part of the paper presents an analysis of the stresses surrounding the openings before and after failure and also this author's views on the causes and after-effects of cracking. An attempt is made to correlate the stress patterns with those deter-mined from pure mathematics. Considering that the openings, except for the central enlargement, are long apertures with somewhat rounded corners, they might be compared with elongated ellipses having axes ratios of about 20:1 or with

"The Gorleben salt dome has been investigated since 1979 for its suitability as a repository for the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The geoscientific surface exploration was followed by underground exploration of the site beginning in 1983: underground excavation work included the sinking of two shafts from 1986 to 1994, the excavation of the infrastructure area and of drifts located in the first exploration area EB1 within the following years. The exploration was interrupted for ten years from 2000 to 2010 as part of a moratorium. After the expiry of the moratorium in March 2010, the geoscientific underground exploration at the Gorleben site was resumed. The investigations were interrupted again in autumn 2012 due to a political decision. The exploration programme included extensive geoscientific investigations: geological exploration, geophysical investigations, mining exploration and mining observation, laboratory tests, in-situ geotechnical measurements, geological modelling and numerical model calculations. To analyse and interpret the results of the in-situ measurements and mining observation geomechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical model calculations were carried out. One of the main elements of the in-situ geotechnical investigations were high-resolution geothermal measurements performed in boreholes used for geological exploration and geotechnical tests.The geothermal measurements are used to evaluate several geotechnical findings, e. g. drift closure, rock deformation, stress change, and are completed by thermal model calculations to analyse and interpret the results of in-situ measurements and mining observation. The model calculations have been carried out using the special purpose JIFE code. To consider the whole exploration mine with the adjoining host rock as well as the successive excavation of drifts and boreholes in detail a three-dimensional finite-element model was developed. The model calculations are used to analyse the cooling-off of the surrounding rock of the drifts caused by ventilation. The cooling-off of the surrounding rock is an ongoing process affecting the results of further geotechnical measurements in the near field of the drifts. To predict a realistic time and space dependent distribution of the temperature field of the host rock within the exploration area which is influenced by ventilation thermal model calculations are necessary. Comparing the calculated temperature field with the in-situ determined rock mass temperature field within the exploration area EB 1 the results show a sufficient agreement. Furthermore there is very good correspondence, both qualitatively and quantitatively, between the experimental and the calculated findings regarding the temperature profiles including the effects of excavation and ventilation of the drifts."

Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. The Brisco Barite Mine lies 70 km south-southeast of Golden, British Columbia. Barile mineralization occurs in a northstriking brecciation zone within Ordovician-Silurian Beaver/ oot dolomites and quartzites. Brecciation was caused by faulting related to the Mount Forster-Steamboat Fault. The main barite vein occupies a fault zone and is up to 12 m wide and over 250 m long. It is light grey to white, fine grained and compact; BaSO4 content is 9/. 70 per cent. Production started in 1945 and has continued to the present. Barile originally was removed from an open pit; later, an adit, begun in 1957, reached more than 240 m along the vein, 15 m below the pit floor. Today ore is hoisted from a decline resting some 37 m below the pit floor.

Present authors have succeeded in single pass large draught rolling of AZ31 and ZK60A magnesium alloy sheets below 200 °C without heating rolls by raising rolling speed above 1000 m/min. Heavy reduction larger than 60% can be applied by single pass high speed rolling even at room temperature. The rolled sheets showed fine recrystallized microstructure by dynamic recrystallization. The improvement of workability at lower rolling temperature is due to temperature rise by plastic working. In high speed rolling, almost all of the work done by plastic deformation is converted into the heat that raises the temperature of the sheet during rolling because the heat did not flow out of the sheet by conduction and radiation within very short time.

"Cominco Ltd's Polaris Mine, located on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories (latitude 75degrees 30') went into production in late 1981, becoming the world's most northerly base metal mine. The concentrator, powerhouse, shops, offices, dry and warehouse, were uniquely designed and constructed on a 100f t wide by 400 ft long by 65 ft high barge. This process barge was constructed in southern Canada at Trois Rivières, then towed 3,500 miles into the High Arctic Islands and beached on Little Cornwallis Island.The paper deals with the original design philosophy, flowsheet and the initial year's operation of the Polaris process barge.IntroductionTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic, a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these fact or s, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gamed at the Black Angel Min e on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during the ""shipping window"". The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months' production was gained by opting for the ""barge"" approach."

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

The beneficiation of barite in mill tailings using an agglomeration technique has been demonstrated. Barite was selectively absorbed from a conditioned aqueous slurry into a collector oil by mechanically mixing slurry and oil. The resulting oil-bonded barite-containing agglomerate was washed, to remove gangue material, and further mechanically contacted with dilute H2SO4 This treatment resulted in the transfer of barite into the aqueous phase. Grades as high as '97% BaSO4, with recoveries of 80%, have been obtained using this technique.

"The subsea rock cavern project is an underground storage facility. For cost-effective and safe excavation, the risk caused by the groundwater seepage into the rock cavern must be addressed. As one of the essential steps of the assessment work, the hydraulic conductivities of the fractured rock masses should be reliably determined based on the limited measured data and geological information from the few boreholes. On the basis of site investigation data and monitored water flow and water pressure data during excavation, this paper presents an estimation method for hydraulic conductivities of the rock masses containing water bearing zones.INTRODUCTIONIn the development of underground rock caverns/tunnels, the uncertainty of hydro-geological conditions plays a critical role in terms of construction cost and construction safety. Excessive groundwater seepage has been identified as one of the key safety factors which always lead to vast loss, such as the Seikan Tunnel in Japan which encountered sudden water inflow and then catastrophic face collapsing, tunnel flood during excavation (Xu et al., 2013). As a key factor in the risk management associated with the groundwater leakage into rock cavern, the hydraulic conductivity determination is very important for cost estimation, reliable water control and construction management.The case presented in this paper is an underground project consisted of a cluster of rock caverns/tunnels for storage of hydrocarbon products. These caverns are located in heterogeneous sedimentary bedrock, at a depth of 130 m beneath a basin, and the crowns of caverns are located at about 100 m below the sea bottom. The caverns/tunnels are designed at two levels, the water curtain tunnels are at the upper level, and oil storage caverns are at the lower level, as shown in Figure 1. A number of horizontal and vertical water injection holes drilled from the upper water curtain gallery tunnel will establish continuous horizontal and vertical water curtains for providing a stable pressure distribution around the caverns, to keep oil/gas inside the lower storage caverns. As the hydrostatic pressure of groundwater around the storage caverns is higher than the pressure of stored oil and gas, the stored oil and gas will not leak out of the cavern (Lu, 2010; Xu et al., 2015). Groundwater pressure gauges are installed in the water curtain gallery tunnels, and water from the operational and access tunnels is injected continuously into the curtains to maintain the pressure. Some monitoring data are recorded at different construction stages. This paper proposes suitable methods to predict the hydraulic conductivity in rock mass and to determine the hydraulic conductivity in the water bearing zones."

The basic studies on the surface properties and flotation characteristics of ilmenite were made by electrophoretic, adsorption, contact-angle and floatability measurements. The isoelectric point of ilmenite is found to be at pH 5.6. By combining the results of electrokinetic studies and adsorption measurements, a clearer picture of the ilmenite-solution interface was observed. These findings were correlated with the floatability of ilmenite obtained by Hallimond tube tests. The general flotation characteristics of ilmenite are compared with those obtained for magnetite and rutile. It is indicated that the above three minerals, namely, ilmenite, magnetite and rutile, have very similar surface properties and flotation characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to make an effective separation of these minerals by flotation. However, it is found that sodium orthophosphate acts as a selective depressant for magnetite in anionic flotation. Therefore, close pH control of the pulp in the presence of the phosphate ion enhances the possibility for a successful separation of these minerals.

"In the unconformity-type uranium deposit at Midwest Lake, mineralization is associated with extensive host rock alteration, which affects the metamorphic basement as well as the overlying Athabasca Group sandstones. Host rock alteration is manifested by (I) transformation of clay minerals [kaolinite into illite and chlorite (sudoile)]; (2) bleaching due to removal of hematite from the lateritic paleoweathering profile and the overlying red bed, Athabasca Group sandstones; (3) loss of coherence of the sandstone resulting from corrosion of quartz cement; and (4) in the immediate vicinity of high-grade ore, development of a clay envelope due to residual enrichment of clay minerals caused by massive dissolution of quartz. Clay mineral transformation and bleaching are the most prominent and the most widespread alteration effects, forming haloes that extend for several kilometres along the strike of the mineralized structure and also constitute distinct alteration pipes that rise f or several hundred metres above the unconformity to be truncated at the present top of the bedrock.Although the two haloes are largely congruent features, cross-culling relationship s indicate that clay mineral alteration represents an earlier phase in the history of the deposit than the large-scale bleaching that gave rise to the superimposed bleaching halo.Because clay mineral alteration and bleaching are intimately tied to the mineralization and extend well beyond the limits of the actual orebodies, host rock alteration may be used as an ore guide in exploration and drill-hole evaluation. In this application a third hydrothermal discharge centre was identified, as yet untested for are, which is located between the hydrothermal centres associated with the two known orebodies of the deposit.It is estimated that host rock alteration may enlarge a potential drill-target by a factor 10 - 20X. Information on the configuration of bleaching haloes can be obtained from systematic core logging, whereas diagnostic clay mineral alteration is readily identified by means of automated, quantitative XRD techniques."

"This paper describes the investigation of a large, progressive slope failure on the southeast wall of the east pit at Highmont Mine, British Columbia Geotechnical investigation s consisted of geological and structural mapping, assessment of blasthole drilling records, review of rock core information, slope movement monitoring and back analysis of various possible failure modes. Climate records and mining history were also assessed to determine their relationship to slope movement .Analysis of movement monitoring records and geotechnical information indicates that the failure is deep seated. The upper portion of the failure surf ace occurs along clay filled discontinuities. The lower portion of the failure surf ace appears to occur through the highly altered rock mass. High groundwater pressures and mining at the toe of the slope are documented to have had a major influence on stability at various times during the failure. Stability analyses results are presented and possible remedial measures are discussed.IntroductionHighmont Mine is located near Logan Lake in the Highland Valley approximately 50 km southwest of Karnloops, British Columbia (Fig. I). Mining of the porphyry copper and molydenum ore bodies began in 1980. In May, 1983, when mining in the east pit had progressed to a depth of about 60 m (200 feet) , a failure (designated the Southeast Failure) began to develop in the southeast corner of the east pit. Subsequent mining to a depth of 110m (360 feet) was accompanied by frequent and substantial slope movements involving between 500000 and I 000 000 m3 of rock . The slope was monitored extensively to assess short-term movement trends for operational safety. Geological mapping, core logging and rock mechanics testing were used in conjunction with the long-term monitoring information to determine the failure mechanism, conduct stability analyses, assess the effects of instability on pit design and enable design and installation of remedial measures."

Air cooled crackable and conventional forged steel specimens were tested under reversed push-pull conditions to examine the effect of shot-peening on their high cycle fatigue behaviour (-106 cycles). The steels were tested in the normalized as well as shot-peened conditions. The results showed that shot-peening smooth specimens had little effect on the fatigue limit of the air cooled forged steels and the detrimental effect of the rougher peened surface was not apparent. Microhardness profiles indicated that the shot peening produced a gradient of compressive residual stresses that was greater than that of the loading stresses, suppressing the anticipated beneficial effect on fatigue life. Crack initiation was more likely to occur below the surface. The results indicate that the surface roughness was not a significant factor in controlling the fatigue lives, since they were essentially the same for the non shot-peened and shot-peened steels.

During linear friction welding of titanium alloy Ti-5A1-5V-5Mo-3Cr (Ti-5553), the weld zone exhibits beta (B) grain refinement and alpha (a) phase depletion that have the combined effect of deteriorating the mechanical performance of the weldment. In this work, linear friction welded Ti-5553 was subjected to pre- and post- weld heat treatments in order to determine the conditions under which a phase depletion could be mitigated in the weld zone and thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The mechanical response of the welded samples to the heat treatments was determined by performing tensile testing at room temperature. While the pre-weld heat treatments had no significant effect, the post-weld heat treatments were instrumental in restoring the strength of the starting (heat-treated) material.

"Flotation is possible when the forces operating between a bubble and the attached particle are properly balanced. There are many forces operating in the bubble-particle aggregate. The magnitude, location and direction of the forces depend on the type of process. The simplest arrangement in flotation is when a spherical bubble is attached to a spherical particle and both are immersed in water. In such a system there are four essential forces which shape the stability of the bubble-particle aggregate. They are excess pressure and interfacial solid/liquid, solid/gas and liquid/gas forces. A proper analysis and balance of the size, location and direction of these four principal forces lead to a general equation delineating the stability of the spherical particle–attached bubble system. Specific cross sections of the system and solution of the general equation lead to different relationships including the Young formula as well as the well-known geometrical relation between contact angle, particle and bubble radiuses. The arrangement of forces in the proposed graphical representation of the Young law is different from that presently used in literature for a bubble attached to an unmovable solid particle. Many real solid/liquid/gas systems are more complex due to the presence of additional forces which change the regular curvature of the liquid/gas interface leading to advancing and receding contact angles.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous papers (Athukorallage, Aulisa, Iyer & Zhang, 2015; Chau, Bruckard, Koh & Nguyen, 2009; Drzymala, 1994; Lubarda, 2012; Pellicer, Manzanares & Mafe, 1995; Wang, Cui, Zhou, Xu, Sun, & Zhu, 2014; Young, 1804) and books (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Lee, 2013; Lyklema, 2000) dealing with the solid/liquid/gas system. Many of them concern the three involved phases having the shape of a sphere or spherical cap and the formed contact angle. The contact angle is usually measured through the liquid phase and can be either smaller or greater than 90o. The essential part of these publications is a graphical representation of the system with the Young equation shown as a result of balance of only three forces that is the excess Gibbs (or Helmholz) free energy per unit area of the three involved interfaces (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Israelachvili, 1985) (Figs. 1a-c). "The Nor-Acme gold mine is near the shore of Snow lake, northern Manitoba, about 75 miles east of Flin Flon. The claims that form the nucleus of the present property were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, but it was not until 1941 that diamond drilling disclosed the potentialities of the deposit. In that year a large-scale drilling programme was begun under the direction of F. Ebbutt, of the Howe Sound Exploration and Development Company. Two orebodies were outlined containing about 5,000,000 tons of ore assaying $5.25 in gold per ton. In August, 1945, construction of the mining plant was begun.All information and interpretations contained in the following brief description of the deposit were obtained from surface mapping.GEOLOGYThe ore lies at the contact between a coarse, basic, pyroclastic rock, which is the hanging-wall, and grey, acidic lavas and sediments, which form the footwall. These rocks are cut by irregular basic intrusions that vary in composition from diorite to hornblendite, and by small acidic dykes . Tourmaline is locally common in the hanging-wall rock near the ore.The ore occurs in brecciated, silicified, and ·slightly carbonatized rock. Arsenopyrite is the main sulphide and the gold is associated with it. Pyrrhotite is locally abundant and minor pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and cubanite have been noted. Two orebodies are known, the Dick and the Toots. The Toots, which is much the smaller of the two, is about 1,000 feet west of the Dick."

"Recently, vertical-type high-speed twin-roll casting (HSTRC) has been developed. The HSTRC shows extremely high cooling rates over 1,000 K/s even at the mid-thickness area. The fabricated strip has many metallurgical characteristics; super-saturation of alloying elements, fine solidified structure, and homogeneous distribution of fine constituent particles. In Al-Mn based alloys, the Mn alloying element can be supersaturated in the a-Al matrix and also form Mn-containing constituent particles during solidification. The Mn supersaturation and the distribution of primary/secondary particles in cast products affect the metallurgical behavior in the down-stream processing and can improve mechanical properties of the final products. In this study, Al-Mn based alloy strips were fabricated by HSTRC with various Mn contents. The solidified microstructure, constituent particles and its distribution, and Mn solubility were investigated in the as-cast condition. Due to the high cooling rate of HSTRC, fine constituent particles were homogeneously distributed, and coarse intermetallics were not observed. Mn solid solubility was estimated by electrical conductivity. The estimated Mn solubility was equivalent between strip surface and mid-thickness area.INTRODUCTION Al-Mn based alloys, as non-heat treatable wrought aluminum alloys, are widely used in packaging and heat exchanger for automobile industry. Besides Mn, Al-Mn based alloys often contain Fe and/or Si as alloying elements or natural impurities. During solidification, Mn can be super-saturated in the Al matrix, and also form Mn-containing constituent particles. Additionally, in the subsequent thermal-mechanical processes such as homogenization, rolling, and intermediate annealing, Mn in solid solution precipitates out of the Al matrix as secondary particles. The size, distribution, type, and the amount of dispersoids including constituent particles affect to texture evolution, recrystallization behavior, and final mechanical properties of wrought Al-Mn based alloys (Huang et al., 2016; Huang & Marthinsen, 2015; Engler et al., 1995; Muggerud et al., 2013). Therefore, controlling the initial level of Mn super-saturation and the distribution of constituent particles are important in the cast Al-Mn based alloys."
