Abstract - Coarse gold-bearing veins are characterized by high grades that are localized and erratic. Effective sampling of coarse gold-bearing veins is difficult because of the low concentration and erratic nature of the gold particles. Diamond drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however, grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development (including close-spaced sampling, bulk sampling, and trial mining). Comparison between surface and underground drilling, underground linear/panel and bulk sampling indicate that drilling and linear/ panel samples generally understate bulk sample grades. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade. It is unlikely that anything above an Inferred Resource category can be estimated from surface drilling alone, and at best the grade will only be a global estimate. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Resources. Closely spaced development and bulk sampling is likely to be the only way to determine Reserves. The resource estimation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand both geological and grade continuity. Traditionally, grade interpolation has been undertaken using classical methods, though more recently, computer-based block modelling techniques have been used with some success. Three case histories are presented, documenting the problems of estimating resources in coarse gold-bearing veins and the practical ways in which they were approached.

Abstract -Estimating ore reserves for vein type deposits is a two-stage procedure: first, calculate the geometry of the vein system, and second, estimate the grades within this system. The grade estimation can only be consistently performed if the vein geometry - its size, shape and orientation - has been correctly characterized. Getting the size and shape of the different veins right means that the ore tonnages will not be artificially inflated, e.g., by falsely classifying host rock as veins. Similarly, correctly estimating their orientation and location helps mine management decide on the appropriate mining technique, selective or not. When applying geostatistics to estimate the vein geometry all available information needs to be used and not just the standard lithologic indicator of being or not being in a vein.

"There is a considerable resource of data for spherical charge cratering, both as single charges and in row-of-charge geometr(1). The data are. however, based on cratering performance to a single free planar surface.In practice. the more common circumstance involves an angular surf ace geometry. such as occurs at the toe of a bench or the wall of a stope. It is for the purpose of investigating this circumstance that the described test work was conducted.The test objectives were: (1) to observe the change in single-charge cratering performance between planesurface and angle geometry; (2) to identify the optimum performance of single charges cratering to a plane surface. cratering from a bench sub-grade position and cratering from a condition of zero sub-grade or stope wall geometry; and (3) to observe the performance of row-of-charges cratering to an angular surface at various row burials and spacing. The row charge burial and spacing dimensions were to be expressed in simple numerical multiples of single-charge depth-of-burial data."

The continuing increase in costs for power and fuel are affecting significantly the cost of milling Canadian ores. In order to ascertain the scope and source of energy consumption in Canadian mills for further energy conservation opportunities, CANMET, in cooperation with the Canadian Mineral Processors, carried out a detailed survey on the metallic mineral processing plants. Sixty-seven mills representing almost 300 million tons of annual capacity participated in the survey. The results indicated that, in general, copper and iron ore mills, representing the bulk of the tonnage, consumed relatively low levels of energy per ton. Nickel-copper, zinc-copper and lead-zinc .ore mills were moderate in energy consumption, and uranium and some copper-lead-zinc mills reported much higher energy consumptions due primarily to the increased heat requirements of the ore pulp. Although plant heating costs varied somewhat with location, it was apparent that the lowest heating costs were achieved by those plants built with proper insulation and energy conservation design. If the cost per million British thermal units is taken as $2.00, the mill energy costs generally ranged from 40ft to $1.20 per ton.

For several years Hatch has been installing fibre optic temperature sensors on the copper cooling elements of smelting furnaces to improve monitoring capabilities in critical locations. The metal/matte tapblock is a key area to monitor in the furnace as it undergoes severe wear from the molten material repeatedly drained through it. The high wear rate around the tapblock means downtime is necessary to perform refractory repairs. A good understanding of the tapblock condition allows the operation to maximize safety and production; consequently the metal/matte tapblocks have been the focus of this study. Fibre optic technology allows the installation of numerous sensors in locations that are very sensitive to refractory thickness, thereby providing information previously unavailable with traditional measurements. The transient nature of the thermal response to tapping and the three-dimensional geometry of the tapblock confound the interpretation of refractory thickness from temperature measurements. This paper focuses on the analysis of both plant data and thermal modelling simulations and details the progress made in relating the temperature measurements to the refractory thickness in front of the copper tapblock.

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

"In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."

ONE OF the major sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks stretching through the Eastern Townships of Quebec where chrysotile asbestos has been mined continuously since 1878. The productive portion of the belt extends from the town of Asbestos in Shipton town-ship northeastward some 60 miles to the eastern edge of Broughton town-ship. (See map). Twelve mines, currently treating an aggregate of over 60,000 tons of rock daily, produce more than one million tons of asbestos :annually. An equal number of mines are now dormant, having for the most part exhausted their reserves. It is evident from the past and present activity, in this belt that it can look forward to at least half a century or more of large scale production. Slim-hole drilling and completion techniques were first used in the Cynthia area of the Pembina field, Alberta, by the Texaco Exploration Company in the summer of 1957. Prior to that time, eighty-eight wells had been drilled and completed in this area in a conventional manner. Subsequent to the initial four-well evaluation programme, twenty-one additional wells have been drilled using slim-hole techniques. No difficulty was encountered in the drilling and completion of slim-hole wells, or in obtaining production from them. A comparison of drilling and completion economics and practices has been made for slim-hole and conventionally completed wells. Penetration rates for both bit sizes (614 in. and 9 in.) were relatively equal. The shorter life of the smaller bits required the use of 15 per cent more bits per well, but the total trip time to change bits was similar for both hole sizes because of the higher hoisting speeds possible with the lighter drilling strings used in the slim holes and better hole conditions. Completion costs of the slim holes were reduced by 37 per cent as compared to the costs of conventional-type completions. This was made possible through the use of smaller well equipment, the elimination of tubing, and a reduction in rig time for completion operations.

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilizationneutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le procédé présenté dans cet article utilise l’adsorption sur charbon actif de la solution de cyanure de cuivre et l’élution sélective du cuivre depuis le charbon pour concentrer le cuivre en un plus petit jet. "Abstract -The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonic­ magmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonically­ controlled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian plat­ form, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu rnineralization. lt does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

Consulting engineers are well aware of large variations in plant operating cultures between countries, companies, and even within sites and operating crews. These operating cultures must be considered when designing Advanced Process Control (APC) applications in order to maximize utilization rates and return on investment. Designs must be driven by an understanding of the totality of unit operations. Economic factors, equipment constraints, management philosophy, maintenance department responsiveness, instrumentation reliability, operating crew skills and teamwork, and individual operator concerns are all important and must be considered during application design. A general approach to incorporating operating culture considerations into APC application design is described. A case study for an iron ore concentrator plant is presented.

"Abstract - The size, morphology, surface texture, per cent mineral inclusions, and bulk chemistry (Ag and trace elements) of placer gold particles vary systematically according to transport distance from source rocks, as indicated by a case study from the Pioneer district in Montana, and data from the literature.Placer gold samples show a rapid decrease in mean and maximum particle length, and a gradual increase in flatness index (F.I. = length + breadth/2 X thickness) from about F.I. = 2 in bedrock deposits, to as much as F.I. = 45 over transport distances of several tens of kilometers. Primary mineral inclusions (mainly quartz, sulfide minerals, and iron oxides) are mostly lost within 10 km to 20 km of fluvial transport; this loss of quartz and trace metals causes a major change in bulk chemistry of placer gold samples. Following the loss of inclusions and the development of flakes, edges of flakes are folded and the mean number of folded edges in a sample increases with distance. When viewed under the electron microscope, surface textures of placer gold particles also become progressively more pitted with distance.Analysis of placer gold particles can be used to help evaluate placer source-area problems (placers with no known hard-rock gold deposits). For example, coarse placer gold containing abundant inclusions indicates a proximal source. On the other hand, an abundance of thin flakes is evidence of a long transport distance and possible reworking from older gravels. Placer gold characteristics can therefore provide information on distance to mineralized source rocks."

"Large subhorizontal joints have been found in the foundation excavations in basalt and granite of Brazilian Dams. Some spread for hundreds of square meters showed slickensides—polished surfaces plus striations—and laminations interpreted as related to shear displacement, what substantially reduced their shear strength and imposed special reinforcement measures against the potential sliding of overlying concrete structures. The geological characteristics of these discontinuities have raised speculations related to their origin, be it related to mechanisms of bulging, cambering or to some tectonic or primary geological event.Several geologists and engineers from the northern hemisphere including Terzaghi already showed to be concerned with their role in granite foundations while in the southern regions Brazilian authors have found similar occurrences but also affecting individual lava flows of continental flood basalts in the foundations of major dams of the Parana Basin, which they designated under the particular name of “fault-joints”. This double-standard designation is self-explanatory of the difficulties involving their origin and related geomechanical properties: faults or just shear joints?Recently, similar features were encountered in the foundations of large dam constructions in anorogenic granites inserted in the realm of the Brazilian Amazon, where some of these discontinuities exhibit features common to tectonic thrusting combined with deep tropical weathering.The evidence of preshearing along the surfaces of such fractures, also associated to products of deep weathering, reduces their geomechanical strength substantially, suggesting values of ultimate phi spanning 12 to 28°. The detection of these descontinuities during initial investigation phases continues to be a major complex task in geological risk evaluations surveys. Trenching associated to some geophysical exploration techniques, although considered to be very basic exploration techniques are still the suggested methods for their forecast and previous determination."

"Certain environmental problems can substantially alter the physical properties of the subsurface. In such cases, geophysical methods can be used to map the distribution of subsurface contamination or buried wastes prior to drilling or sampling. For example, inorganic contamination by acids, bases, salts, or metallic ions can be detected by instruments that measure ground conductivity; metallic objects such as buried drums, pipelines, etc. can be located by magnetic survey, and radioactive mine waste can be mapped by radiometric techniques. Geophysical methods can also be used to characterize site geology. If carried out prior to development, they can assist in identifying areas of high- and low permeability and sources of natural contamination. The methods can also be used to establish baseline values and to locate stable areas for development of environmentally sensitive facilities. Application of geophysical methods to environmental problems is illustrated with examples from base-metal mines, uranium operations, and potash and oil-sands operations. Particular attention is given to the problem of acid mine drainage. =IntroductionGeophysical methods have been used for many years by the mining industry in exploration and geotechnical investigations. The basic techniques for mapping variations in physical properties of the subsurface have been adapted to meet the special needs of resource exploration and development in the coal, potash , oil sands, industrial minerals, precious metals, and base-metal industries. Now the mining industry is facing another challenge: to operate the mining cycle, from discovery to closure, with minimum impact on the environment. This involves the rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites, the minimization and effective containment of pollutants at operating and developing sites, and the longterm containment and monitoring of sites after mine closures.Some of the most difficult aspects of environmental control and monitoring relate to the location of buried waste and contaminated fluids in the subsurface. As in the search for buried ore deposits or in geotechnical investigations, geophysics can be a valuable aid in subsur face environmental investigations. Investigations can be remedial , involving the location or monitoring of existing problems, or preventative, where problem areas are identified or background values are established before site development. In either case, geophysical methods should not be considered as a substitute for drilling. Geophysical interpretations in general do not provide the detail required for a complete environmental or geotechnical investigation. They are most useful as rapid reconnaissance methods for targeting subsequent drilling or for interpreting subsurface condit ions away from drill holes. Table I lists the common geophysical methods and the physical properties to which they are sensitive."

Introduction ?This technique detects 100% of all gear tooth surface indications, providing comprehensive data, and has the ability to size indications accurately. ?The remarkable advantages of ECA technology, is improved inspection capabilities and significant time-savings. ?The advantage of using EMCD is its ability to size indications accurately. ?This technique does not require the gear teeth to be wiped down by hand after cleaning as in MT, LT or UT inspections. (Figure 1) ?This technique will inspect one gear tooth in 30 seconds. ?All of the data can be archived for future comparisons in an electronic report. Methodology ?This technique utilizes Eddy Current Array (ECA) as the principle inspection technique. ?What has been added are specialty scanner probes with multiple coils, a multiplexer and a software package. ?With 2 and 3D dimensional isometric displays, the defect can be seen electronically as it is on the gear tooth surface, thus, reducing the reliance on human interpretation.

"Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."

"The Magino gold mine is located 45 km northeast of Wawa, Ontario. There was limited gold production in the late thirties. The present operation was officially opened in October 1988 and produced gold until September 1992. It was a 635 tonnes per day, decline-accessed mine, with ore coming from several small blast hole and shrinkage stopes.The host for the gold is the Webb Lake granodiorite stock which was intruded into the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This east-northeast-striking deformation zone overprints the generally east-west- striking isoclinally folded metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, which make up the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. The ore-shoots are controlled by dextral delatancy associated with the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. Shearing, bleaching and silicification accompanied the gold emplacement. IntroductionThe following is a general information paper on the Magino gold mine which is located 45 km- northeast of Wawa toward the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. This paper summarizes the discovery, exploration and development history of the deposit. The geological characteristics are described, including regional geological setting, local mine geology, mineralization, alteration and structural history. The mining methods and the contribution of the geological staff to the successful development and mining of the gold deposit are also mentioned."
