A SERIOUS hazard which must be faced in some mines, though quite absent in others, is that of rockbursts. Bursts cannot be wholly avoided in such mines, but the hazard would largely disappear if they could be predicted. The problem of prediction resolves itself into that of measuring pressure in the mine and determining when that pressure nears a critical value. The geophysical approach to the problem lies in discovering some physical property of the rock, which varies with pressure, which can be measured for rock in place, and for which the indication of critical conditions is sufficiently definite and open scale. A physical property, suggested first in connection with earthquake pre-diction, is that of sub-audible snapping. It was argued that, as the pressure grows, the rock probably yields microscopically and that minute snapping occurs which is so faint as to be inaudible to the unaided ear. Experience has proved this to be the case. Following other earlier work begun early in 1939, experiments with this method were initiated at Lake Shore Mines in 1941, and equipment was slowly being developed in practice when, fortunately, it was found possible to by-pass this tedious development programme. Experiments with sub-audible snapping in mine rocks had been carried out by Dr. L. A. Obert of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and his associates over a period of about four years. An amplifier and a recorder were developed, each reasonably satisfactory in practice. Lake Shore Mines offers a tempting field for rockburst research. Dr. Obert was invited to test his equipment in this and other mines in Ontario and did so. As a result, he and the administrative personnel of the Bureau became interested in the Lake Shore experiments co the extent of most generously arranging for the manufacture of sets of their own designed equipment for use in this programme. The first three sets of recorders were ordered at once and were delivered in May, 1942. A second group of three sets, incorporating various improvements indicated by experience both in the United States and in Canada, reached Kirkland Lake in April, 1943. The pick-up devices, known as geophones, were made in the electronics laboratory at Lake Shore by Mr. Zack Gibbs, who has had charge of all the instrument development in this re-search.

The availability of renewable energy does not meet the demands of consumption. Hence, fossil fuels will continue to be an important energy source, and coal promises to cover the requirements for the coming decades. Because of its high energy content, deep lying bituminous coal and anthracite are important for energy generation. One trend in the future of coal mining is thin seam mining, because thick seams more and more have been exploited. A well-known and approved longwall mining method for thin seams is plowing which has big advantages compared to a shearer because of its compact design. The extraction of those thinner coal seams will become more and more important in coal industry and therefore the plow will receive more attention in future. Most approaches in longwall automation are focused on the shearer and need a more or less intelligent exploitation machine. Therefore those approaches cannot be used for the plow technology. The authors introduce a shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC). The developed approach integrates the shield data provided by the roof support and process monitoring into the horizon control process to keep the plow in seam even if the seam trend changes. This control concept can be used for the shearer as well as for the plow. The basic idea of SDHC for plow application will be introduced in this paper and first simulation results will be shown.

The fully mechanized top coal caving mining method has been the main mining approach for thick coal seams with high output and efficiency in Chinese coal mines. The gateroads for the top coal caving mining faces should be driven along the floor of the thick coal seam with a part of the seam as roof. The support of the gateroads is commonly difficult because of the low strength and broken structures of the coal seams, and the increasingly large section of gateroads meeting the need of greater and greater face coal output. Based on the analyses on the geomechanics properties and production conditions of the top coal caving mining, the influences of the top coal caving mining parameters on the stability of gateroads, including mining thickness and face length, are studied. The deformation and damage features of the rock mass surrounding the gateroads with the top coal seam as roof are investigated, the interaction of the support with the surrounding rock mass, the support theory are studied. The bolting design method and criteria, bolting forms and parameters for the gateroads with the top coal as roof are put forward. The rock bolting components, including bolt bars, face plates, cable tendons, meshes, and steel straps, are introduced. Finally, the gateroad bolting effects are evaluated through a typical case study on the basis of field monitoring data, such as the displacement of surrounding rock mass and the forces along bolts and cables.

"For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

Within this 160-year period, more gold was discovered in Canada during the last ten-year period (1973-1982) than during any previous decade. The record suggests that the potential for further major gold discoveries is high, which bodes welt f or the future of Canadian gold mining.IntroductionCanada has an impressive history as a gold producer. Since 1921 we have occupied second or third place among the world 's gold producing nations, after South Africa and most of the time the U.S.S.R. Canadian gold production over the last hundred years has added up to some 6 per cent of all-time world production.The sharp rise in the price of gold in the 1970s led to a surge of gold exploration, which in turn resulted in the discovery of significant quantities of gold in Canada. How do these recent discoveries rate in comparison with those of the more distant past? For example, are the quantities of gold in notable discoveries of recent year s, such as Hemlo and Detour, in the same league with the amounts of gold discovered around 1910 in the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake district s of Ontario? Can the combined gold content of the recent discoveries be likened to that o f the almost 40 major Canadian gold deposits, along with numerous smaller ones, discovered in Canada during the 1920s and 1930s? What are the implications of the more recent gold discovery record for future rate s of gold discovery in Canada?This paper attempts to glean answers to such questions from an overview of the period that begins in 1823, the year of Canada's first gold discovery. Gold deposits come in two major types: placer deposits and lode deposits in solid rock . Placer gold is distributed in sand and gravel. UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating tube densimetry have been used in our laboratory to determine equilibrium constants of aqueous species at temperatures as high as 325 °C. The UV-visible and Raman spectra of solutions containing metal complexes and ionized acids or bases can be used to yield formation constants by applying curve fitting methods to resolve the contribution of each species. Colorimetric pH indicators identified by Johnston and coworkers at the University of Texas (Austin) provide an alternative means of determining ionization constants and the pH of complex mixtures. High precision density measurements over the same range yield standard partial molar volumes, which are key parameters for "equations of state" for aqueous species. Examples are given for the copper-ammonia system, simple carboxylic acids, and the iron-sulphate system.

"As the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, commissioned in 1998, its performance, liner and discharge design attracted considerable international attention. Twelve years on, the liner design and the control philosophy are being readdressed to further improve the mill’s performance. A comprehensive series of 3D liner scans, over life of the liner, have been used to calibrate liner mass loss and progressive changes in the liner profile. This data is being used to provide true charge mass and mill filling, plus progressive trajectory profiles over life of liner. This information, along with measures of mill performance over liner life, is being used to select the optimal operating conditions as the liner wears, and hopes to inform future liner design. INTRODUCTIONSince the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, its performance, liner and discharge design has attracted considerable international attention, as reported in previous SAG conferences. The mill experienced particular challenges with regard to pebble and slurry discharge, which necessitated a discharge redesign, incorporating a considerably greater pebble port open area and curved pulp lifters (Hart, Valery, Clements, Reed, Song & Dunne, 2001). Packing between lifter bars on the shell liner was found to dramatically reduce mill throughput over the first half of the liner life. In response, the liners were redesigned to a 2/3 spacing so as to open up the space between lifters. Due to ongoing high liner wear issues, the liner was redesigned based on the discrete element modelling (DEM) of Conveyor Dynamics conducted by Nordell and Potapov (2001). This aimed to maintain mill throughput with new liners and provide an extended liner life. This design was kept proprietary for many years, so has not been open to review."

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven, and is still proving to be, an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the analyzer results by using a real-time material balance program to calculate the mass flow rates within the streams of a circuit for process control, analysis and optimization as well as for the detection of sensor malfunction. The material balance algorithm improves measurements and give good estimates of unmeasured variables during normal operating conditions. The potential and limitations of the method are illustrated using results of an application to the Line 3 flotation circuit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting, New Brunswick.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants isincreasing. Commercial OSAs include a sampling system that collectssamples from various streams of a circuit and exposes thesamples to an X-ray beam. The sample then generates X-ray pulsesthat are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs(Leroux and Franklin, 1994). "Nkomati Nickel Mine in South Africa processes one of the world’s hardest ores in a 375k TPM autogenous grinding circuit. The plant employs an unconventional processing circuit, comprising a primary autogenous mill (AG or FAG) and pebble crushing circuit followed by a secondary hybrid pebble/ball mill and classification cyclone cluster.Advanced Process Control (APC) or Expert Control is now generally accepted as an advantage in most modern high capacity concentrator grinding circuits. This paper reviews the installation of model predictive control at Nkomati and examines the results and benefits of installation in an autogenous mill during plant ramp-up. The paper also demonstrates how predefining process control objectives together with good plant and supplier cooperation can achieve a robust and reliable APC implementation on a very short site program.The results conclusively demonstrate operational and economic benefits during circuit operation with the advanced process control system ON. Production performance and circuit stability were significantly better than during manual control."

"Migmatite from the Skalka region (Czech Republic) was chosen as the experimental rock material. It has macroscopically visible plane parallel structure (foliation). The foliation was caused mainly by biotite grains arrangement. The cylindrical samples of migmatite with subhorizontal, subvertical and oblique foliation were uniaxially loaded up to the failure. Network of 8 broad band sensors was employed for acoustic emission monitoring and ultrasonic sounding. A grid search method with anisotropic velocity model was used for AE hypocenters localization. The source types of successfully localized events were determined from the average first arrival amplitude. Structural anisotropy of tested rock material caused the anisotropy of its mechanical properties (peak strength, Young’s modulus) as well as a different way of fracturing process in dependence on the angle between axial stress and foliation plane. The combination of splitting, shearing and sliding was found to control the fracturing of sample with subhorizontal foliation. The shearing and sliding was dominant in fracturing of samples with oblique foliation. With greater dip of foliation, the role of sliding increased at the expense of shearing. Due to the favorably oriented system of microcracks already present, the shearing and splitting was at the same level during fracturing of the sample with subvertical foliation before nucleation began.INTRODUCTIONThe process of failure of low porosity rocks depends on their mechanical properties and actual stress and temperature condition. At the low pressure and low temperature, the most common way is brittle failure, which is a progressive process requiring the initiation, growth and coalescence of cracks (Lockner, 1993). Stress strain behavior of low porosity crystalline rocks, during the laboratory compression experiments, is divided into four characteristic stages: crack closure, elastic region, stable crack growth and unstable crack growth which leads to the brittle failure, Brace et al. (1966) , Bieniawski (1967), Lajtai (1974), Cai et al. (2004), Nicksiar and Martin, 2012 and 2013.The fracturing process of stressed rock begins with the crack initiation (sci), which for low porosity rocks occurs approximately at 40-50% of peak strength (sp) (Cai et al., 2004; Nicksiar and Martin, 2013). After the sci, the dilatancy begins and stable crack growth follows up to the crack damage threshold (scd), which is approximately at 80% of sp (Cai et al., 2004). After crossing the crack damage level, there is an unstable crack growth accompanied with nucleation of fault plane (sn) at 97-100% of sp. (Rao et al., 2011). The stress drop accompanied with formation of macro scale shear failure plane follows after peak stress is crossed."

Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

Studies on the properties of rocks heated to high temperatures are rather rare. Such research is occasionally conducted for example; in areas around nuclear power plants. The national Polish coal gasification (underground coal gasification, or UCG) project has, however, forced the analysis of the geomechanical properties of heated rocks in the vicinity of a designed geo-reactor. Ukrainian experience with UCG show that rocks up to 2 m from the burned coal seam be at a temperature > 600ºC. Such a high temperature will undoubtedly influence their physical properties. This paper presents studies on the strength and deformation properties of carboniferous rocks in the Upper Silesian region, where the UCG process is planned. Three types of rocks were tested: claystones, mudstones and sandstones. Laboratory tests of these rocks evaluated compressive strength, elastic modulus and weight loss. An evaluation of the results of the tests comparing the thermal conductivity of rocks and their specific thermal capacity was then carried out. All of the rocks studied were heated to 300, 600 and 1000ºC, and also evaluated at room temperature. This procedure shed new light upon the behavior of heated rocks in relation to their distance from the designed geo-reactor. "The requirements for a metallurgical acid plant treating smelter gases are both unique and demanding in terms of sulphur dioxide treatment and emission control. Since start up in 1981, the copper smelter at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited has undergone several major expansions. The expansion and modification of the acid plant has been an integral part of this process. Both production demands and government regulations dictate that this metallurgical acid plant be unique in terms of operating flexibility. The variable capacity to treat a wide range of sulphur dioxide concentrations, and the operating flexibility to control emissions are the topics of this paper.INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limitied is a base metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April, 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonne per day concentrator coming on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonne per year zinc plant was commissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 tonnes of ore per day . To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Cominco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 125 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No.3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery.The smelter, which uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process for the continuous production of blister copper from concentrate, went on line in June 1981. It has been expanded from its original capacity of 60 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per year of copper.From the very early design stages for the metallurgical complex, the company had adopted a policy of constructing and operating modern plants which would meet existing and anticipated environmental standards. With this in mind, the decision was made to utilize the proven technology of fixing sulphur dioxide emissions, in the form of sulphuric acid. A 636 tonne per day single absorption contact acid plant was built to serve the zinc plant in 1972. In 1981, an 883 tonne per day double absorption contact plant was built to serve the needs of the copper smelter. The copper smelter acid plant has since been expanded to a design capacity of 1692 tonnes per day and it is the main focus of this paper."

Damages have been observed in shafts, backfill infrastructure and the slick line at the Leeville Mine. Shaft damage (shearing and spalling of the concrete liner) is attributed to mine-induced rock mass deformations concentrated where regional faults intersect the shafts. Aggregate bin, mixer station and conveyor drive damage (shotcrete shearing, heave of concrete floor slabs and bending of a vertical steel beams) is attributed to rock mass squeezing induced by elevated magnitudes of the vertically orientated major principal stresses. Separation of the slick line has occurred do to extension of the stressshadowed rock mass immediately above the mined out areas. Three-dimensional numerical models have been developed and calibrated to simulated rock mass deformations with magnitudes similar to those believed to have produced the observed damages. By stepping through the mine sequence, models reproduce deformations at the same mining stage as when damage has occurred. Calibrated models have been used to forward project further damage over the remaining mine life.

Other computer tools such as computer-aided design systems are taking over some of the time-consuming tasks of detailed layout and design and estimation of quantities, etc. and providing the means for detailed examination of more than a single option.Besides computer modelling there is also physical modelling of plant buildings, plant sites and entire proposed mining areas; the former can be especially useful in finalizing design and threading' pipework and electrical reticulation systems through the plant without the resultant risk of impairment of flow, obstruction or wastefulness. Not the least of the benefits of plant models is the assistance provided for training new operating and maintenance staff."

Acid-producing mine tailings are present at many active and inactive mine sites and pose an environmental liability due to the potential for acid rock drainage. Acid rock drainage originating from a tailings pile, a waste rock pile, or exposed sulfide-rich rock, can cause discoloration and turbidity in receiving waters, and the loading of ions mobilized by the acid can cause a decrease in aquatic flora and fauna, and reduction in the quality of groundwater. The primary cause of acid generation is the oxidation of sulfide minerals, predominantly pyrite and pyrrhotite. Considerable mine tailings are being stored on surface in vast tailings impoundment areas across Canada. In the tailings within this study, from the Sudbury, Ontario area, the sulfide mineral of primary concern with respect to acid generation is pyrrhotite. Different tailings types show varying and progressive degrees of oxidation correlating to their specific sulfur contents. The degree of oxidation is determined by the relative extent to which the sulfides have reacted as well as the depth of oxidation within the tailings. Natural Resources Canada, CanmetMINING is dedicated to research supporting the Green Mining Initiative, a program reducing business risks by demonstrating practices that reduce environmental impacts. In cooperation with the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC), applied research aims to reduce land disturbance, waste volumes, and releases to the environment. By reutilizing tailings from vast impoundment areas as a component in backfill, the potential environmental impact would be lessened considerably, due to the reduced tonnage stored on surface long-term. From an operating perspective, there is a need for supplemental feed for backfill from time to time. The reclamation of old tailings for use in backfill is also driven by the fact that old tailings ponds may not be structurally stable, and it may be more cost effective to remove the tailings than to upgrade the impoundment structure. However it is imperative that these old tailings be fully characterized to determine their suitability for use underground, in order to ensure the long-term integrity of the resulting backfill matrix. A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of tailings reclamation from old impoundment areas as a significant component in backfill. The materials were first physically and chemically characterized, followed by preparation of samples to determine optimal mix proportions for strength development for both paste and hydraulic fill compliance. It was found that the amount of oxidized tailings included in the backfill material had a profound effect on both the segregation and settling properties of the backfill matrix, as well as the mechanical properties of the samples. The strategies for decision-making, based on the criteria for material characterization, mining plan, and cost effectiveness are discussed.

"The Lone Gull discovery of Urangesellschaft Canada Limited was made in 1974 as a result of extensive exploration activities for unconformity related uranium deposits in the Baker Lake area of the Northwest Territories. The structurally controlled mineralization is hosted in Aphebian metasediments and intrusive granitic stocks located approximately 2 km south of the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic Aphebian and the Middle Proterozoic The/on Formation.The original discovery was made with a helicopter mounted radiometric system during systematic prospection over the unconformity. Diamond drilling was first carried out in 1977 and continued, with an interruption in 1981, to the present. A total of 25,500 metres and 199 holes have been drilled and outlined three ore zones. Preliminary geological reserves are estimated at some 16 million kgs. U30 8 at an average grade of approximately 0.4%.IntroductionUrangesellschaft initially entered exploration in Canada as a participant in joint ventures in 1968, and was incorporated in Canada in 1974 as Urangesellschaft Canada Limited. Subsequently, UG was among the first companies to apply exploration criteria developed from the Athabasca Basin, namely the Middle Proterozoic unconformity over Archean/ Aphebian basement, for selection of exploration targets in the geologically similar Thelon Basin.The Baker Lake area in the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories was selected from the extensive Thelon Basin because it had the best accessibility (Fig. 1). The hamlet of Baker Lake located close to the geographical centre of Canada, is largely an Inuit settlement with a population of approximately 1,100 inhabitants. The distance from Baker Lake to the Lone Gull property is about 80 km. Baker Lake is connected to the tidewater of Hudson's Bay via Chesterfield inlet and is serviced by scheduled domestic flights several times weekly from Churchill, Manitoba, about 650 km to the south."
