Introduction The lifting of restrictions on the development of radioactive mineral deposits by private individuals has re-opened the search for uranium in Canada to a large body of professionally trained prospectors. The entry of private capital and experienced prospecting techniques into the search for radioactive minerals has been enormously stimulated by the atomic developments of the past several years; and we can now look forward to the discovery of new productive sources of uranium. The rate of new discoveries will, how ?ever, depend on the effectiveness of the methods used. The large number of new pitchblende occurrences reported within the past several months is largely a measure of the energy with which the portable Geiger-Müller counter has been applied in the field. The counter is simply a 'radio' receiver tuned to one of the products of spontaneous atomic disintegration that is characteristic of all radioactive materials. Its effective use depends largely on how it is applied under the various geological and topographical conditions that ma y be encountered, and also on an understanding of its limitations. Extensive geological information relating to the occurrence of radioactive minerals in Canada has been accumulated during the past several years, and it is now possible to define in a general way many of the geological formations in which pitchblende and related minerals are likely to occur. Furthermore, prospecting can be localized in those parts of the favourable formations that offer the greater promise of containing commercial deposits. In this selection, the Geiger counter is the most useful tool available to the prospector for the actual detection of radioactive materials. As an example, an area of two square miles in the Northwest Territories, within which about a dozen pitchblende occurrences had been found over a several year period by conventional prospecting methods, yielded more than forty-five additional discoveries by application of the Geiger counter. Yet earlier attempts at prospecting this area with the counter had failed, due largely to faulty instruments and lack of experience in field application. The limitations of the counter are very considerable; but, when they are recognized, there is no more useful tool for the discovery of radioactive ores. It was not until 1944 that a practicable portable counter was developed, and then only by co-operation in the field by geologists and physicists. Officers of the Geological Survey of Canada working with physicists of the National Research Council brought about the development of the modern counter.

Buildings in the United States account for 72% of electricity consumption, 40% of energy consumption, 13% of water consumption, 39% of carbon footprint, and 30% of waste output. In order to minimize these negative environmental impacts, many public and private owners are requesting that their buildings be more sustainable and certified under the widely known programs such as leadership in energy and environmental design for existing buildings (LEED-EB). To accomplish this, buildings are increasingly integrating green building measures including energy efficient lighting, motion sensors, thermal pane glass, geothermal heat pumps, EnergyStar rated HVAC systems, photovoltaic systems, and wind turbines. This research paper presents the development of an automated decision support system (DSS) that is designed to optimize the selection of green building measures which can be used to upgrade existing buildings. The developed DSS incorporates two optimization models that are capable of (i) minimizing the total upgrade costs required to accomplish a specified LEED-EB certification level such as silver or gold; and (ii) maximizing the number of accredited LEED-EB points within a specified budget of upgrade costs. The DSS is designed to identify a set of optimal upgrade decisions that accomplishes these two optimization objectives. An application example is used to illustrate the capabilities of the DSS and to validate its result.

"Friction stir welding (FSW) process in lap configuration for dissimilar materials has been developed and tested for steel to aluminum joining. A novel cylindrical tool was designed for improved material flow. The joining of steel to high strength 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum was carried out by FSW technique using optimized process parameters. The microstructure, micro-hardness, joint strength and corrosion properties at the weld interface have been investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveled a well layered structure at the interface and lap shear tests of the welds showed excellent fracture resistance. Neutral salt spray tests for up to 500 hours (ASTM B117) were carried out on the bare steel to aluminum FSW joints, which did not show neither evidence of corrosion at the weld interface, nor any degradation of the weld strength. The FSW lap configuration was applied to prototype commercial vehicle structural component whereby a steel stiffener insert was friction stir welded to high strength 6xxx aluminum alloy. The interface microstructure showed layered root without any steel shattering in aluminum side. A finite element study was carried out to quantify the benefits where it was found that the stiffness increases by 76% under bending loads and 36% in torsion loads.INTRODUCTION Energy preservation and environmental issues, namely carbon footprint and legislation around emission in transportation industries has led to a growing need to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys along with various grades of steel in structural application, while still maintaining their strength and crashworthiness. Assembling dissimilar materials within integrated structure is thus a stringent requirement related to optimum performance. In order to achieve an efficient technology of joining dissimilar materials such as aluminum to steel, it remains difficult to select an effective welding process for a given joint configuration. The use of aluminum in transportation industries for structural component is not exclusive in a design and is almost always used along with various steel grades for a mixed materials solution, thus dissimilar aluminum/steel lap joining is of great interest since this is widely used in the assembly of parts (e.g. pillar, frame rails, chassis, body in white (BIW), CAB, etc.)."

A new method using a combination of comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach which includes optical and electrical microscopy and several analytical techniques with diagnostic leaching has been used to characterize the associations and distribution of gold in a variety of minerals from the Zarshuran refractory gold ore, NW Iran. Zarshuran ore with an average of 7.9 g/t Au-grade and about 8% arsenic with gold recovery less than 20% in direct cyanidation is considered as high arsenic, high au-grade refractory gold ore. In most of the refractory ores, gold is associated with arsenopyrite and co-para genetic ore minerals, while in Zarshuran ore; gold is associated with orpiment, realgar and arsenian-pyrite. Considering its mineralogy and As content, it can be considered as the most difficult refractory ore for characterization and processing. Results from the mineralogical examination and diagnostic leaches indicate that there is only a small amount of free gold (17-19%) that is present in cyanide-soluble sulfo-arsenides compounds, predominantly orpiment and realgar. Diagnostic leaches also indicate that little gold is occluded within the silicate structure (14%). Overall, the gold is mostly included in sulfides, arsenic sulfides and sulfo-arsenides (50%). The results also have shown how the technique can be used to gain a good initial understanding of potential metallurgical problems for a refractory gold ore.

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. The Silvermines area of north County Tipperary in Ireland has experienced mining activity for over a thousand years, with lead, zinc, copper, barite and sulphur being extracted from a series of Carboniferous limestones. The last mine to operate in the area was closed in 1993. A legacy of contamination and derelict surface structures remain. Following the death of cattle in the vicinity in 1999, a governmental Inter-Agency Group was established to conduct an investigation. The ?Silvermines Rehabilitation Project? resulted, and included a proposal for the development of a Mine Waste Management Facility (MWMF) to act as a repository for waste materials from problematic sites across the area. The nature of the setting supported an effective solution from both a cost and performance perspective; and with limited maintenance requirements. Locating the MWMF where most wastes were identified would help minimise handling and relocation of materials. This position coincided with an area of artesian groundwater pressures. The resulting MWMF design consisted of a perimeter engineered embankment with the crest elevation designed to just exceed the groundwater piezometric surface. The base would remain unlined and groundwater permitted to rise up into and saturate the contained in-situ tailings deposits and imported mine wastes. The proposed system thus benefited from the ?wet cover? approach to minimising further oxidation of wastes and metal leaching, but without the usual accompanying outward hydraulic gradient and leachate management issues. A sub cap drainage layer with downstream outlet was incorporated to prevent any possibility of hydraulic rupture following an unexpected rise in groundwater heads. Leakage rates from the MWMF were deemed to essentially be driven by surface infiltration rates alone (characteristic of a ?dry cover? approach), with the proposed composite capping system simulated to perform at an infiltration rate of less than 1 mm per year. A toe drain was incorporated with the perimeter containment system, and this collection together with diverted neighbouring drainage was directed under gravity to a dedicated Passive Treatment System (PTS). Overall, effluent water quality from the PTS has been predicted to reflect an annual mass metals removal in the order of 95% below baseline.

Extraction of sill pillars has always been problematic because of high risk of seismicity and rockburst. Depending on a number of factors, a sill pillar can undergo different failure modes and cause problems in the mine. Of these, sudden and uncontrolled failure of part(s) of the pillar leading to highenergy seismic events and rockbursts is a main concern because it is not possible to predict the location and time of a rockburst apart from its potential to cause extensive damage to the mine structures. To date, a comprehensive technique for sill pillar design and recovery does not exist. Conventional methods of pillar design, such as the pillar stability graph method, are utilized to design stiff sill pillars. In these design approaches, the post-peak response of the pillar-rock system is not considered. This is in part due to a lack of clear and comprehensive understanding of the post-peak behaviour and failure mechanism of sill pillars. In general, the strength of a rockmass is described using a failure criterion. When stresses reach the strength of the rockmass, the rockmass does not necessarily become unstable and knowledge of the loads alone is not enough to assess the instability conditions accurately. In fact, it is not possible to predict instability of rockmass based on the strength/stress ratio alone because instability depends not only on this ratio but also on the loading condition and loading system characteristics. The loading system can dictate whether the sill pillar will go through a stable or unstable failure process. This paper examines the influence of various parameters such as the pillar width to height ratio, the extraction rate, and placement of backfill on the Loading System Stiffness (LSS) and the Pillar Stiffness (PSS). The ultimate goal is to design yielding sill pillars that would yield in a stable manner and will reduce the risk of pillar rockburst. Plane strain finite element analysis is conducted using the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion with elastic-brittle-plastic parameters. Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate these stiffness values and assess the stability condition of sill pillars. It is found that increasing the rate of extraction increases the likelihood of unstable yielding of the pillar as has been found in other studies. Placement of backfill in a timely fashion in the stopes above and below the sill pillars increases the stiffness of the loading system. This indicates that backfilling of stopes while creating the sill pillar increases the likelihood of stable yielding of the sill pillar.

"AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

THE geology of the Copper Mountain mine has been ably described by Dr. Victor Dolmage in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey. Reference is invited to that paper for a more extended description of the geology of the ore deposits than will be given here. The important orebodies of the mine occur in fragmencal volcanic rocks, parallel with and adjacent to the gabbro of the Copper Mountain stock. In the mine area, the contact strikes N.45°W. and dips either vertical or steeply co the southwest. For a distance of 500 feet or more from the contact, the fragmental rocks have been intensely metamorphosed both dynamically and hydrothermally. The dynamic effects are reflected in the foliation and fracturing parallel with the contact, which occurs throughout the mine, and the volcanic rocks within this foliated zone are, in places, highly schistose. Superimposed upon thi.s structure is a system of fine, straight, parallel frac-tures that strike nearly normal to the foliation (and contact) and dip between 65° and 75° to the north; it is with this last-described fracture system that the ore minerals are structurally associated. The fractures are mineralized with bornite and, to a considerably less extent, with chalcopyrite and some pyrite. A notable characteristic is the extreme fineness of the fractures; even in high-grade ore they are rarely larger than pencil lines. The tenor of the ore, therefore, varies directly with the fracture spacing. Replacemcnr of the host-rock between two or more fractures, varying in degree from finely disseminated sulphides to masses of nearly solid bornite up to 18 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet long, is not uncommon in the higher-grade portions of the orebodies. Two structural types of orebody are recognized in local nomenclature: the 'contact' orebodies, so-called because they occur along the contact; and 'outlying' orebodics, which are enclosed in the volcanics. The former arc tabular or lenticular bodies elongated along the strike and dip of the contact. The 'outlying' orebodies are coniform, chimney-like masses roughly elliptical in plan; with depth, their roots plunge at steep angles toward the contact. All of the orebodies are cut by a number of light-coloured granophyre and felsite porphyry dykes. These dykes-the so-called 'mine' dykes -enter the mine area from the north, curve gently southeasterly across the orebodies, and then cross the contact into the gabbro at the south end of the mine. All the dykes dip vertical to steeply east.

In this investigation some preliminary results are reported about the electrochemical oxidation of CO using goldbased encapsulated nanoparticles grafted on conducting substrate. The investigation has been planned in four steps: 1. production of Au(111) substrate and modification with self assembled monolayers; 2. synthesis and embedding of nanoparticles; 3. grafting of encapsulated nanoparticles on electrode substrates; 4. investigation of CO electroxidation on the modified electrode. The systems were characterized by means of various techniques (spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical methods), obtaining information about SAM's structure and morphology, size and composition of nanoparticles and electrochemical behavior of modified electrodes.

The present study was carried out to have a better understanding of permeability for greater velocity ranges, An equipment was designed and built for this purpose, Pressure drop measurements were made across the thickness of open-cell nickel foams, Pore and window sizes were measured by image analysis on SEM micrographs, The experimental results are in relatively good agreement with the Hazen-Dupuit-Darcy model (R2>98%), The permeability is affected by pore size, porosity and the normalized projected area of the connecting pores (ie. windows).

"The word ""instrumentation"" has expanded from its original meaning, which in engineering perhaps referred to measuring apparatus alone. In its broadest form, it now includes sensors, display instrumentation, standard pack-aged controllers and, most recently, the use of stored program computers for on-line process control. The paper traces the evolution, in tutorial form, of the successive application of mechanization, measurement instrumentation, automatic control, central operating systems, programmed control, process computer control, direct digital control and, finally, hierarchies of computers used for process control and corporate management as a fully integrated business system. In the field of industrial minerals, the cement industry has seen the most widespread acceptance of these techniques. Computer control has been accepted as the way of life for the blending of chemical materials and for on-line control of the cement kiln. Accordingly, the cement application is selected for further presentation in the paper. This illustrates the trend progressing from control of single loops on process variables toward the objective of total control of the product quality. The economic justification for instrumentation, centralized control, automatic control and computer control is .discussed with reference to savings in fuel, maintenance, operating labour, depreciation, power and product quality improvements."

The paper describes a case study where numerical modelling has been applied to predict potential risks associated with inflows of water in active mine workings from an overlying sandstone aquifer. The objective of the modelling was to predict the development of strata fractures and strains as the longwall panels were extracted and investigate their relationship to an sandstone aquifer. The numerical modelling study also included the investigation of the effect of mining on a fault that existed close to the start position of one of the panels. The potential effects of mining on the fault were undertaken by parametric studies adjusting properties for the fault and the relative position of extractions, which allowed the mine planner to position the panel layout accordingly.

For several years, the GDD SSW EM Probe is being used in nickel?s mines in Canada and Brazil to define ore limits, reduce dilution and predict nickel grades. It is used with success to test most if not all percussion blast holes at all Falconbridge Mines in Sudbury and Raglan and all Inco?s Thompson mines. However, after testing the SSW Probe in other metal mines, we realized that EM conductivity does not define ore limits by testing blast holes for copper, zinc or gold. For non-conductive ores, no instrumentation is yet available on the market to reduce dilution, by outlining quickly and inexpensively the real shape of an orebody. To that effect, Instrumentation GDD Inc has developed a new revolutionary photonic probe that will make the reduction of dilution possible by probing blast holes. Once surveyed with the probe, a computer draws graphs of the ore grade as a function of depth for each blast hole. A contribution by Canada Economic Development made possible the development of this new technology. Canmet and Soredem also cautioned this technology developed by Instrumentation GDD Inc. This new photonic probe will allow: 1) to better understand the shape of the orebody 2) to raise the grade of the ore fed to the mill 3) a more complete extraction of the ore 4) to raise the competitiveness of mines

"SAG/AG mills have been most common choice in grinding circuits last decades. In the most cases, at the discharge of SAG/AG mills, a trommel screen is used that is equipped with baffles to provide appropriate residence time and improve separation efficiency. Using baffles, with the resultant maintenance requirements could lead to decrease in mill availability. In this research, an innovation in the structure of baffles of a trommel is presented. The results show that using new baffles led to 67% decrease in SAG mill downtime due to problems of baffles and 80% decrease in fine particles on recycle conveyor.INTRODUCTIONComminution is a vital operation in mineral processing circuits and it helps to achieve a certain level of fineness in the ore material. About 60-80 % of the overall energy used in mining is consumed in comminution, and this is the reason that much research has been performed in this field (Kochnev, 2008).During the last decades the configuration of grinding circuits has been changing due in large part to the decrease in the grade of mineral resources and the need for large scale, energy efficient processes. The previous configuration of conventional grinding circuits was based on parallel primary circuits (mostly using ball mill), such as the grinding circuit of Sarcheshmeh concentrator plant no.1 (Figure 1). The new configuration of grinding circuits is based on using SAG/AG mills, such as Shahrebabak concentrator plant (Figure 2), sometimes incorporating new technologies like the HPGR. Nowadays, application of new configuration of grinding circuits using large SAG/AG mills up to 40 feet (Allan, Major, Flintoff, Klein, & Mular, 2006), in the minerals industry is continuing increase due to the significant reduction in capital and operating costs, and increase in the plants throughput (Banisi & Hadizadeh, 2007)."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. "It is known that copper loss to the slag phase can be in the forms of chemical dissolution and mechanical entrainment. The contribution of each mechanism to the total Cu-loss depends on different parameters and may vary significantly. To reduce emissions to the atmosphere and to shorten the converting cycle, most industrial processes are aiming at production of high matte grades. Increased oxygen-to-sulfur potential, required by these processes, results in a highly oxidized slag, which in turn leads to an increased concentration of the chemically dissolved copper in the slag phase. Hence, slag cleaning processes are becoming increasingly important for economic viability of the smelting operations. Hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, and mineral processing routes have been used for copper recovery from slag. The current article reviews a trade-off study evaluating two of the commonly used methods (namely flotation and electric slag cleaning furnace) by comparing the technical pros and cons, operability/maintenance requirements, and capital/operating costs of the operations.INTRODUCTIONLarge volumes of smelter and converter slags are produced by copper smelters around the world. It is estimated that for production of each ton of metal 2.2 tons of slag is produced (Gorai, Jana, & Premchand, 2003). Considering the current pressure on the mining and metals industry for “zero-waste, sustainable and environmentally friendly” extraction of metals, it is absolutely essential for metal producers to improve their efficiencies in order to remain competitive. To meet these objectives, almost all metal producers, from steelmaking plants, ferroalloys, base and precious metals producers, are trying to reduce their metal losses to the slag phase. In particular, copper producers are aiming to produce higher matte grades in their smelting furnaces to reduce the converting time and improve their overall throughput. Copper smelters need to minimize their copper/precious metal losses to the slag phase before final landfilling/use of slag. The current article, therefore, briefly reviews the copper loss to the slag phase, methods of metal recovery from the slag and then presents a trade-off study conducted for a green field flash smelter of the sulfide concentrates. A comparison was made between two of the major process routes for metal recovery from slag, namely slag cleaning furnace and flotation."

"Goldcorp is evaluating the potential for economic reprocessing of historic tailings at several sites, including the Aunor A facility located in Timmins. The overall project is investigating the ability to recover value, remove sulphide minerals and alternative tailings re-deposition strategies. Desulphurization of tailings will eliminate potential acid generation while improved tailings re-deposition could reduce long-term liabilities and closure costs. Through a task-share project between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp, tailings obtained from Aunor A site have been characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The selected tailing samples contain about 2 g/t of gold. Mineralogical analysis has identified coarse agglomerates bound with gypsum and significant free gold, confirmed by high recoveries in cyanide leach tests. However, despite no evidence of surface passivation on the minerals, conventional flotation techniques were found to be ineffective in concentrating gold or sulphides due to the high fines content and highly agglomerated particles.INTRODUCTION Aunor Mine is one of the historic mines that belongs to Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) in Timmins, Ontario. PGM has undertaken an extensive mine closure program to remediate the legacy and closed mines with the funding supported by operating mines since 2006. Over the course of 100 years of operation in the Porcupine camp, it is estimated (Stevens et al., 2013) that about 130 million tonnes of tailings have been generated. Aunor Mine produced 2.5 million troy ounces of gold between 1940 and 1984, while processing over 7.6 million tons of ore. The original gold grade of Aunor Mine ores was about 10 g/t. With 95% gold recovery at the time, an estimate of 0.5 g/t of gold remains in the Aunor Mine tailings. Aunor Mine has two tailings impoundment areas: designated as Aunor A and Aunor B. The two sites are similar in size, about 7 hectares each. The amount of tailings in the Aunor A site alone is about 3.2 million tonnes. In 2017, bulk tailings were sampled from five designated locations in Aunor A. They were characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The bulk tailings samples contained about 10% total sulphur, 10% iron, 2% arsenic and 2 g/t of gold. The prime objective of this collaborative work between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp is to facilitate the timely development and deployment of innovative tailings reprocessing solutions, specifically in the areas of desulphurization, and recovery of metals. This work targeted specific tailings of interest to Goldcorp which goals are to improve its environmental footprint and to reduce long-term liability. Thus, it is imperative to look for innovative reprocessing options that can overcome not only technological challenges but also achieve economic benefits to offset the costs associated with reprocessing the tailings. Moreover, the greater goal is to demonstrate and deploy tailings reprocessing solutions to solve one of the industry’s most difficult challenges for a sustainable mining industry in Canada."

Placer Domes? Campbell Mine, situated in northwestern Ontario, is undergoing an assessment of the efficiency of the operation which is necessitated by the low gold price and a reducing ore reserve grade. A decision has recently been taken to move away from a functional based departmental structure (underground, engineering, geology, etc.) towards a team-based system where crews, engineers, geologists and supervisors are responsible for the planning and operation of a particular area of the mine. The objective is to improve communication and understanding of the goals and achievements and to ensure a forum is available for the generation of ideas. It is intended to increase the accountability and decision-making ability of the teams in an effort to achieve the mines? safety and production targets. This paper presents a critical review of the progress of this organisational change process and its successes and failures at the time of writing.
