As of November 2012, the Alberta government listed 53 oil and gas, oil sands, and mining construction projects either proposed or currently under construction. These industrial plant construction projects have an estimated value greater than 105 million dollars. A common construction method employed for industrial plant projects is fast-track construction, which is used to reduce construction time. Contractors begin fast-track construction with highly generic scheduling information. This high level schedule turns into a lower level schedule as more detailed information becomes available. From a contractor?s perspective, a challenge faced using fast-track construction is the visualization of generic and constantly changing project schedules. This paper discusses the use of a Plant Information Modeling (PIM) system, designed to create a 4D animation to visualize project schedules for fast-track industrial plant construction projects. The proposed PIM system creates a modified project schedule by obtaining specific information from a generic construction schedule. Obtaining the information involves grouping schedule activities in accordance with the level of detail in a 3D model, and the level of detail in a project schedule. The modified project schedule is then used in conjunction with a 3D model to simulate the construction sequence in the form of a 4D animation. This allows for 4D visualization of project activities, installation dates, and crane movements. Furthermore, as engineering reaches completion, the PIM system creates a streamlined channel for schedule information updates to be easily uploaded into the model for a more accurate 4D visualization. Through analyzing a nonmodular construction case study, this paper discusses the successes and benefits of the PIM system for 4D visualization, such as increased productivity, shortened construction time, increased constructability, and decreased field costs.

Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

AN INCENTIVE or bonus system of payment is commonly used for mine labour. The incentive rates are usually based on the variable units of production, such as dollars per foot of drift advance or cents per ton of ore broken. Portions of the work that must be done to achieve the units of ?production are independent of the production unit and tend to be fixed work for the shift or for the job, irrespective of the production achieved. This fixed work has considerable influence on the equity of incentive rates. The effect of fixed work is to accelerate the loosening or tightening of rates if the production task is over-achieved or under-achieved, and of increasing the loosening of rates loosely set and the tightening of rates tightly set. This gearing of mine contract rates is the reason why changes in conditions, materials, equipment, or methods will change the incentive earnings to a greater degree than would normally be expected. Obviously, therefore, care should be taken in the setting of the task for incentive rates as the gearing makes an inequitable rate even more inequitable.

Due to changes in the solid-state conditions of minerals in the rocks surrounding hydrothermal, contact meta-somatic or metamorphosed ore deposits, positive or negative thermoluminescent anomalies may be found in their vicinity. Several types of equipment which can be used for both quantitative and semi-quantitative measurements of the emission are discussed and compared. Methods of selecting, preparing and testing samples to ensure reproducible results are outlined, along with the kind of data which can be obtained from different types of equipment. The normal thermoluminescence of rock-forming min~ erals in the common rock types is noted, and variations in the solid-state conditions in the wall rocks which will cause marked increases or decreases of true thermoluminescence are outlined, as well as the thermolum-nescence-like emissions which are present in the vicinity of ore deposits. "Johnson Matthey has developed the first diesel particulate filter (DPF) for underground mining that controls particulate matter (PM) at the same time as maintaining emissions of NO2 at or below engine baseline levels. DPF technology is critical for controlling PM which is classified as a carcinogen, but passively regenerating systems rely on the use of oxidation catalysts that can potentially increase NO2 emissions. This paper reviews the development of low-NO2 PM control technology and the results from testing this technology underground on diesel mining equipment. KEYWORDS Decomposition catalyst, Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Diesel particulate matter, Mining Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®), NO2, SCR INTRODUCTION The introduction of diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology on heavy duty diesel (HDD) engines has been an important step towards addressing the clean air and health concerns for mining companies. Control of diesel particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel engines is already being implemented for on- and off-road vehicles, and similar legislation is being prepared for mining equipment. In addition to PM, the diesel emission control strategies (DECS) also reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Some DECS control oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, which is composed of NO and NO2. Johnson Matthey has led the development of emission control technologies for diesel engines for almost 30 years. Over the last ten years alone JM has supplied over 3 million Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) DPF systems for on-road vehicles, and over 200,000 systems for off-road vehicles. The patented CRT technology combines a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a DPF to effectively trap harmful PM from diesel exhaust, while removing CO and HC. The DOC converts part of the engine NOx to NO2, which reacts with the trapped soot to regenerate the filter. As engines become more fuel efficient, less waste heat enters the exhaust. This can be a disadvantage for after-treatment systems as it leads to lower catalyst operating temperatures. The CRT system regenerates passively, without addition of heat, at temperatures that are typical of diesel engine exhaust. JM recently launched the Mining CRT system which integrates CRT technology with NO2 abatement to reduce PM and tailpipe NO2 from underground diesel mining equipment. This is the first technology proven to control both PM and NO2 emissions for a cleaner, healthier working environment. The Mining CRT is also cost-effective compared to other technologies."

"As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

Bubble nucleation in water under dynamic conditions was investigated using an autoclave at an air saturation pressure of 7 atm. Agitation during air saturation of water was found to be crucial in enhancing tiny bubble formation. More bubbles nucleated on hydrophobic surfaces at a higher agitation rate, due to cavity formation by the more intense hydrodynamic conditions. Flotation recovery of bitumen from oil sands demonstrated a significant role of bubbles nucleated in water: more than 50-170% increase in bitumen recovery from different oil sands was obtained by using air supersaturated than the regular water.

Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I come to you tonight distinctly as a physicist, not as a geologist or a mining man. My experience in applied geophysics has been short, and I do not doubt that many of you have a much larger acquaintance: with the subject than I have. A little over a year ago, the firm of Alderson, MacKay & Armstrong decided to investigate the possibility of developing a new method of electrical prospecting suitable to our northern Quebec and northern Ontario conditions, and asked me to take up the work. A preliminary survey of existing literature convinced me that the field of induction methods was most promising. I wish to give you some account of the work carried on last summer in the Rouyn district in this connection with the very able assistance of Mr. H. G. I. Watson. Geophysical methods of prospecting can be divided generally into four classes: magnetic, electrical, gravitational, and seismic. Each class depends on the existence of a definite property in which the valuable mineral to be discovered differs materially from the surrounding rocks. In the four classes, the property will be, respectively, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, density, and elasticity. By far the largest differences occur in the case of electrical conductivity, where it is not rare to find ratios of the order of several millions, or even billions, between ores, sulphide ores especially, and the surrounding rock. Hence the sensitiveness and delicacy of electrical methods. Of these four classes, only two, the electrical and the magnetic methods, have been put to extensive practical use in the discovery of metallic ores. The other two classes are important mainly in connection with oil detection.

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

Of the f ive Canadian cement producing regions- Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Pacific-Ontario has the greatest capacity and normally produces the most cement. However, during the last 5 years the greatest activity within the industry in Canada has been in the Prairie and Pacific regions where major capacity increases have taken place. Most Canadian cement companies produce normal Portland, high-earlystrength Portland and sulphate resisting Portland cements. Some companies also manufacture moderate Portland cement, and low-heat-of-hydration Portland cement. Escalating energy costs highlight the need for technology research into more energy-efficient equipment for the energy-intensive cement industry. The industry is well integrated and plants are well situated to support construction in Canada. Expansion into the United States has become common during the past decade.

"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. "The removal of elemental sulfur from leach residues derived from massive sulfide concentrates via hydrometallurgical routes has been demonstrated in a laboratory setting by converting water-insoluble sulfur to water-soluble polysulfides. The approach was applied to leach residue from Vale's nickel hydromet demonstration plant in Argentia, Newfoundland, which contained significant amounts of elemental sulfur. This technique offers an alternative treatment protocol for residues with a sulfur component not amenable to standard flotation/hot filtration processes. The practical considerations of a proposed flow sheet will be discussed including the impact of other sulfur species (e.g. thiosulfate and sulfides) and key process variables. INTRODUCTIONPresently, large scale elemental sulfur extraction from hydrometallurgical leach residue is performed by Teck Resources using a process of sulfur flotation followed by hot filtration (Chalkley et al., 1993). As mentioned, the technique proves viable for residues derived from specific concentrations - in this case zinc - whose residues constituency is primarily elemental sulfur itself. However, problems arise when this constituency is altered as happens when, for example, a mine containing one particular concentrate is mixed or replaced with a differing concentrate from a second mine. Such cases can often strain the effectiveness of current sulfur removal processes (D'Odorico, 2004). If hydrometallurgical residue containing elemental sulfur cannot be effectively treatment by flotation, the residue is stored subaqueously as is the case in some 'grass roots' hydrometallurgical plants (those not coupled with smelting operations). Hydrometallurgical processing of concentrates involving pressure leaching is becoming increasingly common throughout the mining world, the genesis of which can be found in research performed by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan since the 1950’s (Ozberk et al., 1995).The investigation of elemental sulfur removal by means other than flotation includes the uses of sulfide salts (NH3S or Na2S) effecting the conversion of hydrophobic elemental sulfur to hydrophilic polysulfides. The work of Kunda et al. (1974) and Olper et al. (2007) shows that elemental sulfur can be quantitatively removed from hydrometallurgical leach residue via the formation of a mixture of polysulfides."

In the transformation of carbonaceous materials, such as peat, to coals of various grades, the changes are known to be both physical and chemical and the grade of coal finally produced depends on the stage to which alteration proceeded. Those changes, which are frequently spoken of as the results of metamorphism, are due to pressure with accompanying heat and, according to the amount of metamorphism to which the sediments with the included carbonaceous beds have been subjected, there is a gradation from peat to anthracite coal, and even to graphite. The improvement in the quality of the coal as a result of metamorphism is due to an increase of the carbon content of the coal and a corresponding loss of the volatile materials. This rise in the quality of the coal according to the degree of metamorphism is well illustrated by the coals of western Canada. In the Plains area, where the deformation and the attendant metamorphism of the sediments is comparatively small, the coals are lignites, whereas in the mountains, where deformation has been severe, the coals are semi-anthracites. Sub-bituminous and bituminous coals occur in the intervening areas. The same general relationship between the quality of the coal and the degree of metamorphism holds true for the Appalachian basin of the United States, where there is a progressive improvement in the quality of the coals from west to east, that is, from an area of comparatively slight metamorphism to an area of marked deformation in the Appalachian Mountain region. But while it is true that this relationship holds in a general way, it has been found that the improvement in the quality of the coal is not always uniformly progressive, and there may be local variations such that an area containing coal with a carbon content indicating low or medium metamorphism may be surrounded by areas in which the coals are of higher grade. These local variations in many cases can be explained, and they in no way detract from the general rule that, in a region exhibiting a progressive betterment in the quality of the coal from an area of low metamorphism to one of more marked deformation, the quality of the coal, i.e., the amount of fixed carbon in the coal, may be taken as an index of the degree of metamorphism of the coal as well as of the sediments in which it occurs, It has been pointed out (') that certain coals, such as cannels, are unreliable indicators of the varying degree of metamorphism because of the nature of the material from which such coal was derived. Such coals, however, are not known in western Canada and their behaviour need not here be discussed.

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The company's strong cash position, attained late in 1989 and in the beginning of1990 through the exercise of warrants, put working capital at $83.8 million as of June 30, 1990. Long-term debt was reduced by over $10 million during the weak gold market, leaving the company with a debt to equity ratio of only 0.03. Production for the six first months of 1990 was 107 720 oz. Au, an increaseof24% over the corresponding period in 1989.Financial Profile/Results and Corporate Financial StrategiesTotal revenue for the 1989 fiscal year was $116,883,000 compared to $109,848,000 for 1988. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. Cambior's stock and warrants are traded on the Montreal and Toronto Stock Exchange."

"The Northeastern part of the Cariboo district lies in the big bend of the Fraser River between Quesnel and McBride. The area shown on Figure 1 extends from just west of Wells to Isaac Lake, about 30 miles across the regional strike of beds.Topographically the area extends from the moderately well dissected Interior Plateau in the west through a transition zone to the fully dissected Cariboo Mountains in the east.The area is an important source of lode and placer gold. The Cariboo Gold Quartz and Island Mountain lode-gold mines have produced more than 32 million dollars in bullion since 1932. Placer-mining has probably produced an equivalent or greater amount, although only 15 million dollars is officially recorded because accurate statistics. were not kept until fourteen years after the origiiaal gold rush of 1860.The regional structure of the Barkerville district was summarized by Lang in the Jubilee Volume (1948, pp. 141-149). Since then a large amount of detailed and areal mapping by the writers has expanded the information available and made necessary a complete revision of the regional geology. Much of the information summarized in this paper, together with a full discussion of the revisions, may be found in British Columbia Department of Mines Bulletins, Nos. 34 and 38, but other information is as yet un-published.Rocks of the Kaza group are exposed in the core of the Lanezi anti-clinorium between Spectacle and Isaac Lakes. The main part of the group is composed of greenish micaceous greywacke and greenish schist with knots of garnet, biotite, or both, and minor amounts of pebble conglomerate. The upper 1,000 feet is composed of white to brown quartzites and brown phyllites. Altogether, about 6,000 feet of the group is exposed. 1t is of latest Precambrian, i. e. Windermere, age."

"Many of the ore bodies presently being developed are in remote locations and are, or will be, served by electrical power supply systems of limited capacity.The largest single components of the electrical systems of an underground mine are usually the production hoist drives; the power demands of these drives vary continuously throughout each hoisting cycle.Before 1970mine hoists were driven by either wound rotor induction motors or DC motors in conjunction with motor generator sets.Static Power conversion equipment now costs less to purchase and install and is claimed to be more efficient than motor generator sets. On the debit side, however, it can adversely affect the hoist motors, it operates at relatively low power factors, and it produces harmonic currents.This pa per discusses the effects of static equipment on both DC motors and AC power systems, and evaluates the relative consumption of the three classes of drives."

Pebble Creek Geothermal Power project is associated with a massive recent volcanic eruption in Southwestern British Columbia Canada. Slim holes drilled to depths 1100 m in the prospect area, show very high temperature gradients around 80?100?C/km. The temperature and chemistry of the Pebble Creek hot springs indicate the possibility of a steam reservoir in the prospect area. In addition to high temperature gradients, presence of host rocks with high permeability, along with abundance of recharge waters (from the Lillooet River) provides clear signature of a high-grade geothermal power reservoir at depth 2000 to 3000 m. Data show that over five hundred Megawatt of green power can be generated from the prospect area in a commercially viable manner. The generated power will be base-load, which in comparison with large hydro has the advantage of lower capital costs and a significantly smaller footprint. The final hurdle to overcome, before starting the development phase, is deep exploratory drilling for resource confirmation. This paper is a summary of the data available on the Pebble Creek geothermal power prospect, presented in the context of viability of the resource for large-scale commercial power generation.

"The Rabbit Lake uranium deposit is located at 58° 11’00”N.. 103°42'36""W., close to the west side of Wollaston Lake, and approximately 800 km north of Saskatoon. The orebody is hosted by Aphebian Wollaston Group rocks, initially deposited as a series of shallow-water marine sediments consisting, in part, of carbonates and possible saliferous petites. Metamorphism during the Hudsonian Orogeny, peaking at about 1850 Ma, recrystallized the sediments to upper amphibolite grade paragneisses. This was accompanied by partial anatexis. The waning stages of Hudsonian orogenesis appear to be marked by minor granitic intrusive activity.The post-Hudsonian period was marked by a long interval of physical and chemical erosion, resulting in the unroofing of the Wollaston metamorphic complex. The entire region underwent extensive lateritic weathering under tropical to subtropical conditions. Carbonates were especially vulnerable and, in the Rabbit Lake area, suffered extensive solutioning with accompanying formation of collapse breccias. Old zones of weakness also underwent periodic reactivation.It was during this period that uranium was leached from the surrounding meta-sediments by oxidizing meteoric waters, and transported into the karsted and fractured rocks of the Rabbit Lake doline.Athabasca Group sediments eventually covered the deposit, their diagenesis taking place at about 200 °C and 900 bars. This allowed the partial to complete recrystallization of the initial mineralization, resulting in a minimum age of 1281 ± 11 Major ""first""-generation pitchblende. Periodic fault/fracture reactivation modified the hydrologic regime within the deposit, resulting in episodic mobilization and recrystallization of pitchblende and other uraniferous species. This is clearly shown in the open pit at the present time: uranium is being mobilized and recrystallized on damp pit walls as bayleyite and liebigite due to the modification of the hydrologic system by mining activities.The uranium mineralization occurs mainly as fracture fillings, coatings, and impregnations within breccia zones and intensely altered metasediments. Lesser mineralization is intimately associated with phyllosilicates which form the matrix of a carbonate-col/apse mega-breccia. The primary ore mineral is pitchblende, consisting of five generations, and from which a large suite of secondary uraniferous minerals have formed. On a gross scale the metal content of this deposit appears to be simple, consisting almost exclusively of U, but minor Ni, As, Cu, Se, Fe and Co are also present. The eastern limit of the mineralization is defined by a vertically-dipping microgranite dyke - breccia complex, containing high-grade uranium values. The orebody is truncated to the west and at depth by the Rabbit Lake reverse fault. Minor mineralization occurs as fracture fillings in unaltered plagioclasite in the footwall of the ore body. Precipitation of uranium from solution could have taken place by a number of processes. A mobile reductant (methane, carbon dioxide, etc.) may have been generated from graphite present in some of the host rocks of the orebody. Sulphides are also a common accessory and may have aided in the formation of a reducing environment. Phyllosilicates may have acted as adsorbants for uranium, allowing for its fixation. This metal has also been incorporated into the phyllosilicates themselves."
