THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

CHEMICAL AN AL YSIS by x-ray emission spectrometry has become increasingly important during the past few years. The method is analogous to optical spectrography ?with x-rays being used instead of light and should not be confused with methods of x-ray diffraction used? for identification of minerals and chemical compounds. X-ray emission spectrometry has many advantages for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Its optimum concentration range is higher than that of the optical spectrograph, and the group of elements which can be detected is not identical to that which can be detected by the optical spectrograph. Elements which can be detected by the x-ray spectrometer are those elements from magnesium (atomic number 12) to uranium (atomic number 92) in the periodic table. The lightest elements in this range have low sensitivities and more specialized equipment is necessary for their detection than for the heavier elements. A large number of applications of x-ray analysis have been directed toward the analysis of ores, metallurgical products, and related materials (see References at end of paper). A more complete bibliography is presented in the Norelco Reporter, Vol. 3, 1956, pp. 37-39. "IntroductionMINING operators in common with other operators are confronted today with two serious problems, shortage of experienced workmen and rising costs. The following review of practices at the Sullivan mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, outlines certain measures that have been responsible, during recent years, for minimizing the effect of these two problems. The paper is divided into three main sections:( 1) Training programmes and job studies( 2) Improved mechanization and equipment( 3) Large-scale methods of operationTraining Programmes and Job StudiesJob TrainingJob training courses were introduced at Cominco immediately after the last war and proved to be a great benefit to the operations. There were three courses given, Job Instruction Training, Job Safety Training, and .Job Relations Training. These were spread over a period of two years and were taken by all operating supervisors and some key operators.The courses were introduced by a trained instructor from the British Columbia Department of Labour. This man trained twelve of our employees as instructors by giving them an intensive one-week course. Similarity between the three courses was such that the instructors trained in the first one were very readily trained for instruction in the two succeeding courses."

"The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world's largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

"The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. The potential effect on innovations is discussed"

A core sample for this study was taken from the sulphide ore of the Geco Mine. The subsequent research was based on the assumption that a part of the scattering of strength-grade data could be correlated with variations in the chemical and/or mineralogical compositions of the samples. The results demonstrate clear relationships between strengths in tension and compression and the zinc-iron contents of the rocks.

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

The Daly-Judge Tunnel, begun in 1887 to drain mine workings, is now a source of potable water for the Municipality of Park City. The water is exceptionally clean; however, when roof falls occur, suspended solids levels become too high and water from the tunnel cannot be used in the treatment plant. In 2001, the tunnel was inspected and rehabilitated to ensure that the water supply for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games would be uninterrupted. Twenty-five timber tunnel sets were removed, and 86 steel sets were installed. Timber lagging was installed or replaced over about 230 m (750 ft) of tunnel length.

FOLLOWING World War II there was an urgent need for the development of domestic sources of ilmenite to take care of the expanding needs of the titanium dioxide pigment industry. In addition, there was the interest by the pigment manufucturers and others in titanium metal. Prior to the war the pigment industry in the United States had obtained its major tonnage of ilmenite, analyzing 55- ?60 per cent Ti02, from India. However, as a result of the shipping situation which developed during the war, the pigment manufacturers had to consider the use of lower grades of ilmenite located on this continent .and several companies undertook extensive exploration programmes to locate and develop such orebodies. Probably the most significant deposit that was found as a result of these ?programmes was the orebody .at Allard Lake, Quebec, owned by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation. This ?Company was formed in 1948 by the Kennecott Copper Corporation and the New Jersey Zinc Company to mine this ilmenite ore and treat it in electric furnaces to produce titanium dioxide slag for the pigment industry and iron for the steel industry.

As the demand for natural gas as a prime global energy source continues to grow, the search for new sources of the fuel spreads into geographical areas that are more remote from the marketplace. Along with this comes the need for longer and ever more efficient pipelines. This requirement for higher value in natural gas transportation is satisfied to a large extent through the application of high strength technology and innovative design approaches that support increased design and operating pressures. This paper reviews the latest accomplishments and successes in these technologies for use in gas transmission. It also explores some of the technologies which are targeted for the future to allow the industry to achieve even higher benchmarks in reliability and cost-effectiveness. The central element in the theme of high strength technology for gas pipelines is that of high strength steel. From tensile strengths of Grade 359 a few decades ago, more and more operators are now specifying Grade 550 linepipe for their large diameter projects. As well, Grade 690 steel is operating successfully in limited transmission applications and Grade 825 has recently been installed. With the introduction of the latest high strength pipe comes the need for high strength fittings. The industry's first Grade 550 fittings were recently specified and installed on a project with Grade 825 line pipe. High strength materials can only be implemented successfully if compatible design and construction processes are in place. The latest developments in strain- and reliability based design will be described as well as the corresponding advancements in welding and inspection technology.

L?utilisation du remblai en pâte dans les exploitations en vrac est de plus en plus importante. Puisque la technologie existe pour fabriquer du remblai en pâte sans construire une usine coûteuse, il est maintenant possible d?élargir le domaine d?utilisation du remblai en pâte pour y inclure des gisements filoniens où le besoin annuel de remblai est moindre. Dans certains cas, l?utilisation du remblai en pâte pourrait permettre de réaliser d?importantes économies telles que la réduction de la dilution, la stabilité des ouvertures, la récupération d?une plus grande partie du minerai par la réduction de la taille des piliers et l?entreposage de moins de résidus à la surface. L?ampleur des économies est parfois difficile à chiffrer mais il est tout de même important d?en tenir compte lors de la décision d?utiliser du remblai en pâte puisque ce sont souvent ces économies qui seront déterminantes. Différentes méthodes d?extraction avec remblai en pâte appliquées aux mines filoniennes seront présentées. Des défis et les solutions reliés à l?utilisation du remblai en pâte à la Mine Doyon seront discutés.

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. Un processus d’étalonnage fait correspondre la variabilité géologique spatiale entre les réalisations finales et l’ensemble des données de forage. TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

"A market survey of all underground mines in Canada (Fig. 1) was completed to determine the ex1ent to which cable bolts are being used as ground support. One hundred and nine questionnaires were distributed with 65% of them being returned completed. As a result, the quantity, types and locations of cable bolt installations have been determined. In addition, the grout pumps used, time required and cost of installations have been addressed. The popularity of other support types used in underground mines is summarized.IntroductionRock reinforcement consists of installing support within the rock mass (internal) or within the excavation (external). Within the past twenty-five years several new types of ground support have been introduced within the mining industry. Cable bolts were first introduced to the Canadian mining industry in the 19605 (Gramoli, 1975).Cable bolts have gained increased acceptance as a method of ground support during the past decade. The cable bolt is comprised of one central wire surrounded by six slightly smaller outside wires and typically having an over-all diameter of 15.2 nun to 15.9 nun (0.6 in. to 0.625 in.). The cable wires are made from high-strength steel with an ultimate strength of 26 tonnes (58 000 Ibs) (Goris, 1990). Current cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to reinforce the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used in open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods (Fig. 2).They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, they are generally less than 20 m (65.5 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage compared to previously used ground support is that the cables are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils allowing relatively long support to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m).With the advent of bulk mining methods which require comparatively large stopes, it has necessitated the use of relatively long support tendons to stabilize the large spans being created. As a result, the use of cable bolts for ground support in mines has increased significantly within the past decade."

Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), Pt, Pd, Rh, have been widely used as a three-way catalyst to clean discharged gas from automobiles and therefore a considerable amount of the spent catalysts is generated annually. This paper proposes a novel concentration technology of PGMs by utilizing the double-deck structure of PGM bearing alumina-ceria and cordierite phases. The applied technologies are a combination of heating-quenching, selective grinding and screening for separating alumina-ceria phase from cordierite. Temperature change as a function of quenching time and the thermal stresses applied to both phases were simulated and calculated by FEM, and it was clarified the mechanism of micro-cracks generation at the phase boundary and micro-cracks in alumina-ceria phase, which indicated that separation of alumina-ceria phase from cordierite and selective breakage of alumina-ceria phase could be achieved in the subsequent selective grinding with an attritor. This process could concentrate 46 wt% of alumina-ceria phase into fine fractions with 86 % recovery efficiency. The remaining alumina-ceria phase can be further recovered by applying flotation and so on.
