ABSTRACT; his paper proposes new methodology to define the pit limits that yield the maximum net present value (NPV) for a deposit, under a given economic scenario and for a given discount rate. The method uses an algorithm that combines dynamic programming and heuristics. It was tested for evaluating deposits with different sizes and various grade distributions. For the discount rate of zero, the results confirm that the economic pit limits are the same as that defined using Lerchs Grossman method. However, when discount rates higher than zero are used, the pit limits differ, yielding a higher NPV.

"The main objective of this study is to introduce the new Sandvik’s production cost-model within Crushing & Screening (C&S) technology. So far, there have been different ways of determining different production costs in the industry, however, the previously published and presented methods have not been very efficient in calculating the costs per product and metric ton. Accordingly, the current study has been planned and started in collaboration with Lund University to provide an accurate and easy to implement cost estimation program to determine the costs for crushing and screening plants worldwide.The proposed model has been adapted to fit the C&S processes of different rocks/ores fractions. The result is presented as cost per ton of the end product(s).Within this paper the cost estimation results for 3 different crushing and screening plants are presented based on the information obtained from the following sources: a) documents at Sandvik SRP, b) Sandvik’s crushing & screening internal/external machines/plants data and information, c) literature studies, including the use of Sandvik’s internal/external simulation and software programs, d), visiting the crushing and screening plants ,e) interviews, information systems’ data, and, f) testing and observations by ourselves.In order to improve the level of accuracy and the validity of the attained results, simplistic Monte-Carlo simulations have been used, where needed. The achieved results, so far, have proven the reliability of the model. The calculated cost estimations have shown an accuracy over 80% when they compared with real cost data obtained from plant practices.The current cost calculation model, will offer the possibility of:•,Calculating the production costs in proposed and/or existing C&S plant.•,Making detailed cost analyses for the end product(s) in proposed and/or existing C&S plants.•,Determining the profitability of each finished product when it’s required.•,Cost optimization by potentially cutting the cost for part of C&S plant with an existing plant practice"

"A need for increased copper concentrate production and for less nickel contamination in that concentrate at Falconbridge's Strathcona Concentrator during 1993 required the installation of a third flotation column and improvements in the operation of the existing circuit. Innovations in wash water distributor and launder design were fundamental in achieving objectives on a new 3 meter diameter column. Minnovex plug-type spargers were tested on a 2.1 meter diameter column in order to reduce maintenance requirements. The paper details the measures taken to enhance column flotation circuit performance and the results obtained.IntroductionFalconbridge's Strathcona Mill receives 10% of the ore feed from a rich copper zone in the Strathcona mine. This ore typically grades 7% copper and 1 % nickel and, because of its high copper content, it is processed in a separate circuit ('C' circuit) which consists of conventional grinding, rougher flotation with the concentrate being treated with lime to pH 12.3 and cyanide followed by column flotation. The columns are operated with mechanical flotation scavengers and the scavenger concentrate is returned to the column feed. Testwork conducted in 1991 showed that the original flotation column (Column 2) could only produce 5.5 mtph of concentrate with less than 0.5% nickel (Figure 1).Between 1991 and spring of 1993, production was increased at times by open circuiting the scavengers. Metallurgical improvements were obtained by improving the wash water distributor of Column 2 and by wash water sprays in conventional cells (1 ). However, the scavenger concentrate assayed 0. 7 -0.8% nickel and was not acceptable for long term operation. When Copper ore production targets were significantly increased for 1993, it became clear that an additional flotation column was required. The new flowsheet employs mechanical scavenger cells on the column tails as in Column 2 circuit (Figure 2). A -parallel configuration was chosen as pulp solids fraction has been shown to be a critical variable and the second column in series would receive a lower density feed."

"With todays economic trials and tribulations we have all become deeply engaged in costs and cost cutting in our field of mineral processing. Grinding is one of the most expensive unit operations. The cost of grinding media is the most expensive item in grinding costs. Therefore, it is only reasonable to attack the cost-cutting area by trying to reduce the consumption of media. This introduces the field of autogenous or rock-on-rock grinding.Rock-on-rock grinding is not new to us. It has been known for many decades;The South Africans used pebble grinding in the '20's for gold.Mr. B. Crocker was prompted for the same reasons to introduce pebble grinding at Lakeshore Mines in Kirkland Lake during the last war.The Buffalo Anchorite used beach pebbles in grinding prior to the war.Autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding is used quite successfully in the iron ore field. Base metals have their examples in Australia at Caba, in Africa at Komato and in Sweden at Aitik.Recently three mills in British Columbia and one in Arizona started with autogenous mills in their circuits. One was originally conceived to utilize a modified autogenous grind with a crusher in the circuit. All except the same mill had contingency plans for converting to semi-autogenous. All four mills have since converted to the semi-autogenous mode. These are Island Copper, Lornex, and Similkameen in B.C. and Pima Mining in Arizona."

To increase drill fleet capacity and meet increased ore demands at its Carol Lake Project, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated a program in 1975 to convert the Gardner-Denver 120 and Bucyrus-Erie 60-R rotary drill fleet from 12 1/4-inch-diameter multi-pass drilling to 15-inch-diameter single-pass drilling. This paper will examine briefly the conversion program , including some tests and results, and examine how the utilization of the 15-inch-diameter blast-holes, coordinated by a comprehensive drilling and blasting program, has improved the drilling, blasting and drilling-plus-blasting aspects of the mine operations, from both economic and operational viewpoints.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a very important producer of raw materials in the world. The country holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, and iron-ore. With more than 37 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves and 55 billion tons of total mineral resources, Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral-rich countries. Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) is one of the biggest iron ore mining complexes in Iran, located in a remote, but strategically important area near the Afghanistan border. The Iranian government has planned several mining projects in this region for a stepwise development over the next 5 years to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. In cooperation with private companies, these projects shall be realized as sustainable as possible. This paper introduces SIOM and describes socially responsible activities undertaken during the initial development of this mining complex. The effects of these activities will be demonstrated. Unique attributes of the Sangan area have a significant impact on the acceptance of SIOM by regional stakeholders. The government has made several social investments that benefit workers´ families and the community. They are attempts to build social capital for the mining operations and demonstrate a commitment for socially responsible mining to the communities and the local population. They aim to create a balance between the local and regional expectations and requirements and the necessity to secure the corporate profitability at a reasonable and sustainable level. Investment in socially responsible activities is not a choice but a necessity to improve the relations between mining companies and stakeholders in the communities. It is recommended that social investments should be carefully planned and implemented from the early stages of mining activities, and should proceed throughout the life cycle of the mines.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. "Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. Le gisement contient une ressource géologique évaluée à 14 Mt de sulfures semimassifs (>60%) localement massifs à basse teneur, incluant une zone à haute teneur de 1.26 Mt titrant 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, et 0.40 g/t Au. Les intersections de sulfures semimassifs à massifs se situent dans une enveloppe de schiste à quartz-sericite ± chlorite interprétée comme un tuf felsique intensément déformé. Cette séquence contient une quantité importante (jusqu’à 50%) de pyrite disséminée dont le grain varie de fin à grossier et son épaisseur maximale est de 140 m. L’enveloppe pyriteuse s’étend latéralement sur 900 m et a été tracée jusqu’à 1000 m en angle de chute. Des sulfures massifs sont trouvés partout à l’intérieur de cette enveloppe d’altération, mais ils sont plus fréquents près du contact supérieur. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

A quantitative model based on strain accumulation in multi-pass rolling is developed to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation in a Nb microalloyed steel with high Mn content (HTP steel). The larger the critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation, the finer is the dynamically recrystallised grain size. The initial mill trial showed that it is feasible to achieve ultra-fine grain size by dynamic recrystallisation but the prevention of static recrystallisation in between passes is identified as an essential condition to suppress mixed grain size. The data-base on static softening kinetics at short interpass time was experimentally determined on WUMSI and incorporated in the model. The model is used to optimise the strip rolling schedule to prevent static recrystallisation in the interpass time. The rolling simulation of strip rolling schedule has validated the model prediction that it is possible to obtain a uniform ultra-fine ferrite grain size of about 1-2 micrometer diameter in final ferrite microstructure for industrial rolling parameters. A user friendly software package has been developed to apply the model for off-line control of mill processing parameters, i.e., time-temperature-deformation schedule of finish rolling in order to accumulate large strain to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation. The model is a powerful predictive tool for grain size control in multi-pass rolling.

Several low-temperature, dry chlorination processes for the treatment of sulphide minerals are reviewed, in a chronological order. These processes include the following: the Swinburne-Ashcroft, Baker-Burwell, Maim, Comstock-Wescott (Aldermac) and the Mitterburg Mining Process. Dry chlorination investigations at the Canadian Mines Branch (now CANMET) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines are discussed, as is a proposed process by the South Africa National Institute for Metallurgy. The techniques used in the process are discussed, as are the shortcomings, problems and failures of the methods.

The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. Proven and probable ore is mined preferentially over possible ore in the early years of the plan. Also, the fixed cost of operating the mine is taken into consideration whenever mining activities take place.Once the linear program is solved, it can be critically reviewed, and unrealistic results can be identified. Some resource allocations constraints can then be changed in certain sectors, and new results can be analyzed. “Whatif” scenarios can also be examined, such as determining the impact of hiring a contractor to develop a given sector, or dropping an ore zone completely from the plan."

"The Oka Carbonatite and Alkaline Complex is a Lower Cretaceous intrusive body of the Monteregian petrographic province. Carbonate rocks of various types, and associated alkaline rocks of the ijolite and okaite suites, are distributed in a double ring-dyke structure 4 Yi miles long by 1 1/2 miles across. Alnoite and alrioite breccia pipes intrude all rocks of the Complex and indicate, from inclusions, that a cover of Palaeozoic rocks existed at the time of emplacement.The results of radiometric, magnetic and gravity surveys of the Complex are compiled and discussed both with respect to the regional pattern and, locally, the bed-rock geology. The Complex is characterized by high-intensity anomalies.Exploration activities started during 1953, and mining operations began in 1961 on the property of St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation, at one time the world's largest producer of niobium concentrates. Because of the boudinaged and fractured nature of many of the rocks and the variability in grade of the ore minerals, the role of the mining geologist is both demanding and exacting. Rock types are varied and their mutual relation-ships ambiguous, the minerals are rare and complex, and close geological control of the ore is needed in the mine and in the mill. Closely spaced diamond drill holes are needed for mining control, and the ore-waste contact is defined mainly by assay results.In the exploration for 'carbonatites' in Eastern Canada, aeromagnetic surveys are judged to be the best exploration tool, followed in decreasing order by the search for circular structures on aerial photographs, regional gravity surveys and radiometric surveys."

Mining of complex ore bodies at greater depths is a major challenge requiring high capital and operating costs due to remote locations, high energy costs, water quality and complex environmental issues. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. At the McIntyre mine, there are two distinct operations: a gold mine with narrow veins, mined by cut-and-fill methods, and a copper mine with large, open, long-hole stopes. The application of the Critical Path Method to scheduling work in the copper mine, where it has been used successfully for several years, is de-scribed briefly. This application is relatively simple. Use of C.P.M. has now been extended to the gold mine. To replace the former method of scheduling from bar-charts, a procedure was developed for scheduling automatically. To handle an operation of this size and complexity, a computer was essential. Improved schedules are now being produced, with a saving in time.

A brief description is given of the requirements which No. 4 Shaft has been designed to meet and of the methods by which two-stage winding of rock has been accommodated in a single shaft sunk to a depth of 7,421 ft. This is followed by a consideration of the factors which led to the decision to sink the shaft as rapidly as possible. Introduction T HE No. 4 Shaft of Hartebeest-fontein Gold Mining Company, Ltd., has been sited to serve the deep southern area of the mine, some 1,500 claims in extent, between the elevations of 6,250 and 7,300 ft. below surface. From this area, some two-thirds of the mine production will ultimately be obtained. Above the 6,-250-ft. elevation, an existing shaft hoisting system, situated adjacent to the reduction plant, is of adequate capacity to cater for all ore hoisted to surface for milling. No. 4 Shaft will therefore be required to provide downcast ventilation of 1,000,000 c.f.m., together with surface hoisting facilities for men, material and development rock and underground hoisting
