Amongst the unavoidable studies of the mining engineer who desires to reach the maximum efficiency, is the subject of patents. With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Better patent administration is always in Australia a valid requirement, and until engineers generally take up and press the demand, bad administration is likely to continue. Mr Kapp's paper helps considerably to clarify the subsidence/mine geometry relationships in New South Wales. It is in the best tradition of the presentation of field investigations such as has built up internationalknowledge over the years.The Author has plotted in Fig. 10, the maximum subsidence developed over each of a number of panels of different width/depth ratios and concludes that the maximum possible subsidence over a super critical extractionarea is around 0.65 of the mining height and that this is reached with the critical width/depth ratio of extraction of around 1.5.Although, as Mr. Kapp says, the maximum possible subsidence in the UK can reach 90% of the seam thickness extracted the more usual figure for the first seam is up to 80%. It has also been found in the UK that with shallow workings such as those at Kemiro Coliery the critical width of extraction is 2.0 or more times the depth.

The past decade has seen revolutionary advances in communications and information-handling techniques which have been stimulated by "cold war" military requirements and by current programmes for probing into outer space. The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration methods. These are1. the development of new approaches, based on information theory,for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and2. the use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered non reflective. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.Digitization of geophysical data for handling by high-speed electronic computers facilitates many of these techniques for signal-to-noise improvement. Direct digital recording of seismic data in the field is now being d'one on an experimental basis in the United States, and this should become a standard procedure, at least for problem areas.The increased dynamic range, flexibility of filtering and other data processing, and convenience of information storage and retrieval make digital recording attractive in spite of its high cost compared to conventional analogue methods. Digital computers are being programmed to carry out many operations in data reduction and interpretation with substantial savings in time and cost over conventional procedures.INTROPUCTIONIn the years that have passed since the end of the Second World War, the western world has witnessed a technological revolution which may be as far reaching in its ultimate impqct as the Industrial Revolution of the last century.

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. Pyrite is ubiquitous within copper ores, and presents significant challenges to most operations in terms of its impact on copper sulfide concentrate grade and recovery.Samples of ore containing from 3 to 47 percent pyrite, with nominally the same chalcopyrite feed grade, were collected from a copper mine in eastern Australia for testing. The ores were ground under standard conditions using forged steel grinding media in the Magotteaux Mill® to determine the impact of increasing pyrite feed grade on the pulp chemistry of the system and subsequent rougher flotation response. Attempts were made to correlate the pulp chemical parameters (oxygen demand and EDTA extractable metal ions) with flotation behaviour to determine if one (or more) could be used as a metric to infer metallurgical behaviour.The observations made were then tested under different grinding environments (obtained using more electrochemically inert high chromium) grinding media to determine if they hold true.CITATION:Greet, C J, Karageorgos, P and Teixeira, L, 2015. Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are decomposed with hydrofluoric and other acids. Most elements are extracted ftom the acid, aqueous solution by Alamine 336 (tricaprylyl tertiary amine) and thorium is determined in an aliquot taken from the aqueous phase by means of its reaction with arsenazo III. Concentrations down to 4 p.p,m. may be determined at a rate of 100 samples per man-day of 8 hr.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

I HAVE to thank the members of the Institute most cordially for the honour conferred upon me in selecting me President, which position my poor services have prevented my filling adequately. I have, therefore only been able to stumble through my year of office under the guiding direction of our esteemed Secretary. I fully appreciate the honour done to me; and, now that it is over, I can look back with pride and pleasure at having occupied the chair; but I am told that it remains for me to fill one of the requirements of our Institute and present you with what has been dignified by the name of a presidential address. This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

IF a straight line should be drawn on the map (See 1, page 96) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to the west, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the South Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about its central portion, the zone may aptly be termed "The Great Reefton Gold Belt." The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. Despite a long history of production of industrial minerals and rocks, New South Wales still offers significant opportunities for exploration for and development of these minerals. Exploration for opal, sapphires, and zeolites in the State has been particularly encouraged by pioneering geological studies by the Department of Minerals and Energy, which have resulted in the development of important new geological concepts and exploration techniques. Large areas with potential for these minerals have not yet been tested. In the case of sapphires, the studies have identified a new type of deposit which is'the source of most of the sapphires mined from alluvial deposits. Recent price increases for heavy minerals, a re-evaluation of previous exploration in coastal regions, and a recognition of suitable environments in inland New South Wales have stimulated renewed exploration both onshore and offshore and have led to increased production. Significant potential also exists for development of a number of other minerals, including: topaz, which occurs in large, unusual and perhaps unique deposits in northern New South Wales; dimension stone (particularly granite); bentonite; diatomite; and silica for metallurgical use. Potential also exists for development of construction material resources, particularly construction sand, which is in short supply in the Sydney region.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

THIS paper is the outcome of experiments carried on and experience gained. at the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company's tailings plant at Waihi, New Zealand. The plant was erected to treat accumulated tailings which had been discharged into the Chinemuri River by the Waihi batteries.The Chinemuri River is a common sludge channel for all mining debris, tailings, and ashes from the power plants, the last being the cause of occasional high residues, which gave so much trouble to the management. The tailings were dredged from the bed of the river into barges by means of a Pohle air lift, the power being supplied: by a 13 b.h.p. Tangye oil engine driving an air compressor and a centrifugal pump. The sands were elevated from the barges by bucket-belt elevators over screens, to eliminate large particles and rubbish, into storage hoppers, and from there fed direct into four C. Judd Ltd. tube mills.The method of treatment was fine grinding in a weak cyanide solution, agitation in B. and M. tanks, filtration with turn-over vacuum filters, and precipitation with zinc shavings. The comparatively high values of the residues in gold gave a great deal of trouble, 'and it was not until repeated experiments were carried out that the cause of the trouble was located.
