Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

As shown in Table 9, consumption has risen steadily for the period November through April, reaching its highest level since June of 1974. Imports remained at a relatively high level in spite of decreased imports from Zaire and Belgium-Luxembourg. Award prices for cobalt sold by the General Services Administration on June 17, 1976 ranged from $5.058 to $5.41211 per pound of contained cobalt. The high bid was about $1 per pound above the current market price set by the major sales agent in the U.S. for cobalt on April 15, 1976. COPPER: Eight domestic producers on July 1 hiked refined copper prices by 4¢ to 74¢ per pound for cathode and to 74.625¢ for electrolytic wirebar. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) June pricing of prompt contracted copper averaged 70.6¢, with daily quotes registering between 67¢ and 72.5¢ per pound. In June, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash wirebar prices averaged 70.3¢, trading between a low of 65.5¢ and a high of 73.6¢. End of the month copper stocks totaled 108,758 short tons for the COMEX and 539,350 metric tons for the LME.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in cooperation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), conducted over 200 hours of melting tests to vitrify residues from five municipal waste combustion facilities. Combined residues (grate residue and f1yash) from three municipal waste combustors, a waste water treatment sludge combustor, and flyash from a refuse-derived-fuel (RDF) boiler, were sequentially melted in a I-metric-ton (mt) water-cooled-wall electric arc furnace. Each of the residues underwent magnetic separation, screen size analysis, and bulk chemical analysis prior to melting. The furnace products were examined by optical and electron microscopy and by X-ray diffraction. Bulk chemical analyses were acquired for the metal, fume, and vitrified furnace products. The material balance for the furnace operation indicates that from 69 to 86 pct of the feed reported to the vitrified furnace product, which had leaching potentials well below the EPA limit for each metal, as determined by the EPA TCLP. The electric arc melting furnace currently is being utilized in a cooperative research project between the USBM and the Idaho National Engineering 'Laboratory (INEL) for melting tests on simulated low-level radioactive wastes,

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer's entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. WHILE methods of utilizing blast-furnace slag have been developing, a great deal of literature on the subject has accumulated, but no comprehensive summary of information that would be helpful to engineers, contractors, architects, chemists, and others in under-standing and more successfully using this byproduct of the iron and steel industry has been published in the English language. The National Slag Association recognized the need for such a publication, and the Problems Committee of the Association under-took in 1943 to accumulate the necessary material. Over a period of several years this committee compiled pertinent information in manuscript form, and in 1948 the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association made an agreement whereby the Bureau was to prepare the data for publication as a cooperative bulletin of the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association.

Mining Engineering sat down with Hecla chief executive officer Phil Baker to gain insight on this tremendous longevity and to get his view on how the company demonstrated persistence, gained perspective and created position for its future.How did Hecla Mining Co. get its start?In 1891, a group of investors formed Hecla Mining Co. to acquire and trade mining claims. No one envisioned at the time that the Coeur d’Alene Mining District would become known as the “Silver Valley” and produce more than 37.2 kt (1.2 billion oz) of silver. Or that Hecla would become the United States’ largest primary silver producer and the last of the pioneer mining companies from this illustrious mining district.What is the origin of the name “Hecla?”That will forever be a bit of a mystery. Some say it was named for an Icelandic volcano. Or that it was the foresight of James Toner, who staked the original claim, that it would go so deep, fulfilling the medieval folklore definition of the word ‘Hekla’ which is the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ I kind of like that one as the Lucky Friday Mine is almost 3.2 km (2 miles) below the surface. It has operated for more than 70 years and has all the markings of being one of only a handful of mines that will exceed 100 years of operations.Is there a common theme, or thread throughout the 125 years?Yes, Hecla has always had a solid core of high-quality and long-lived assets, positioning the company to survive times of low prices and reap the rewards when cycles turn and higher prices are realized. But it is not just assets. Hecla has extraordinary expertise that gives us the perspective of how to acquire, explore, develop and operate mining assets, particularly underground. Hecla is one of the few companies to acquire assets in the last five to six years and we did not have to write down the value of them, which means we paid a fair price for the asset despite the metals price reductions that followed the purchase. And our culture has given us the persistence to develop mines and complete projects despite lower prices. For almost a decade we have been advancing the #4 Shaft project at the Lucky Friday. We will complete this project this year, positioning the mine to operate for decades. And we are spending money on new techniques, new equipment and innovations to our operations. Stress has a significant effect on the stability of pillars. In order to get an accurate picture of pillar stability, one needs information not only on the primary Stress distribution but also on all the Subsequent Stress changes as time passes. Sonic methods are some of the fastest, most economical and least destructive means of stress prediction. The wave propagation velocity has long been applied to the investigation of the upper mantle and crust stress. Recently, it has also been applied to the prediction of rock bursts and to mine site investigations. Another parameter for investigating stresses in rocks is the attenuation coefficient. Attenuation has been observed to be more sensitive to stress changes than wave velocity; however, the measurement of attenuation is more difficult than that of wave velocity. In this paper, the mechanism of sonic attenuation in rock is reviewed. Both the velocity and the attenuation of sound waves in five different rock types under various stress fields were examined in the laboratory. It was found that for a specific rock type the relationship between the velocity ratio and stress, as well as that between the attenuation coefficient ratio and stress, can be expressed by simplified second order polynomial equations.Research showed the attenuation coefficient to be more sensitive to stress change than the velocity ratio. A field investigation method was proposed using a Schmidt hammer as a repeatable energy source. Initial trials appeared to show that monitoring by the wave attenuation method gave more repeatable data than monitoring wave velocity.

Underground mining of copper ore in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper District basin generates a number of seismic events, whose energy often exceeds 108 J (Butra, 2010). The number of tremors and their location shows that the area of rock mass involved in the deformation and failure processes significantly exceeds the area of mining operations. Locations of seismic foci of high energy tremors, as well as the aftershocks that accompany them, extend hundreds of metres, confirming that processes to restore the energy balance of rock mass occur in a short amount of time and over a wide area. Thus, an area of similar size should be considered in predictive analyses of the tremor?s position. It should be emphasized that a large portion of the rock mass still has a level of freedom resulting from the way the rock mass is held together and its geometric continuity. This level of freedom is dependent on the scale and duration of mining, the number and size of natural structures, and rock mass pressure, including gravitational pressure constricting individual fragments of rock mass in the area (Burtan, 2012). It can therefore be assumed that in real conditions, areas where mechanical strength of the layers has been exceeded may be located a considerable distance from each other and do not necessarily need to coincide with the working area location. In this sense, a rock mass influenced by mining exploitation is essentially a rock mass in which numerous fragments with concentrated energy exist simultaneously. Energy will be released within these rock mass areas each time rock mass strengths are exceeded by the induced stress changes related to mining operations. This paper presents a discussion on how to predict the location of seismic activity areas based on a change of position of seismic energy equivalents. This parameter is calculated for a given set of seismic tremors with defined foci coordinates. For a given set of seismic tremors, the location of seismic energy equivalents may be used for predicting the location of high-energy seismic events.

"Taseko Mines Limited Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine recommenced operation in 2004 with the initiation of a series of development projects to increase throughput capacity as well as modernize the mine.In the second staged development project, a VTM-1250-WB regrind mill was selected to replace the existing conventional ball regrind mill to achieve a target grind size of 80 % passing 45 µm. In the third staged development project, a second VTM-1250 regrind mill was selected for installation in Concentrator #2, to match the existing Concentrator #1 Vertimill. This resulted in approximately 25% spare regrind capacity in the Concentrator #2 design, complete spare parts interchangeability and potential future expansion capacity to 50,000 t/d with no circuit upgrades.In this context, a study was initiated to assess not only the performance of a Vertimill grinding circuit processing a copper concentrate to a particle size of 80% passing 17 µm but also to provide Taseko’s New Prosperity project specific design information for grinding to particle sizes below 80 % passing 25 µm.The objective of the work described in this presentation was to explore Vertimill ultrafine (sub 100 µm) grinding test methodologies at both the lab and pilot scales, compare the scale-up data with operational data from the VTM1250 at Gibraltar Mines and subsequently apply this information to particle sizes down to 80% passing 17 µm. The presentation will describe the results obtained preceded by a description of the Gibraltar regrind circuit historical operation and operational performance as well as a description of the Vertimill technology.INTRODUCTIONTaseko Mines Limited is a mining company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Everyone has a role in site safety, even consultants. This paper presents a summary of how a geotechnical and environmental consulting firm, with field staff on construction and subsurface explorations sites, engaged their staff and leveraged relationships with contractors to assess the construction related risks to which its staff members are exposed. These findings were then integrated into their technical training materials for both new staff and those needing a refresher, so that safety is discussed at the same time as the technical work and not treated as a separate topic. The paper outlines the process of identifying and evaluating the construction related risks that staff members face and presents examples of how the consultant can engage contractors in the process. By doing this, knowledge can be shared and there is a better mutual understanding of the risks associated with common construction and exploration related field tasks. The work resulted in an increase in staff engagement in safety, a better understanding of the true risks that staff face in the field, better relationships with contractors, and lower safety metrics. HISTORY At Haley & Aldrich, Inc., we renewed our safety journey in May 2012. Like many others, we had concerns over injuries our staff experienced in the three previous years, and a potentially significant utility strike we experienced while excavating a trench. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 we experienced an increase in recordable injuries, including two significant injuries, which caused our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) (see note below), Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), and Days Away-Restricted, and Transferred Rate (DART) to rise significantly. See Fig. 1 for details. This caused us to step back and review our approach to safety, and our “safety culture”. The rise in reportable incidents and injuries also corresponded to the beginning of a growth period for the company.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

The t10 relationship developed by Narayanan and Whiten has underpinned a number of the JKMRC models and the characterisation of ore competence through impact testing with the drop weight tester. This usefulness is based on a consistent relationship between the t10 value and the overall size distribution that was noted for brittle rocks. However, like all characterisation tests this should be used only when the controlling conditions apply, which in this case is single impact breakage between two metal platens and within the range of sizes in which fragment sizes are normalizable. For any other mode of breakage the relationship should be confirmed before being applied. Soft ores or bimodal ores with widely different competence between dominant components have non-typical breakage signatures. Breakage via single point impact abrasion, compressed-bed breakage, low-energy surface breakage and incremental breakage, to name some of the other breakage modes, do not obey the general t10 relationship, so their outcomes cannot be used to provide a direct comparison. Inappropriate use of the t10 parameter can result in misleading conclusions about efficiency of energy use. These issues and alternative comparison techniques are presented and discussed in terms of choosing appropriate measures of efficiency of breakage, ore competence and energy required for comminution.

This paper reviews the recovery of potassium from different rocks and mineral sources. Global demand for potassium is rising steadily due to the growth of agricultural production. Fertilizer manufacture consumes the majority of the world’s potassium production, with other uses including those in the pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash (K2O) minerals, such as sylvite, kainite and carnalite, in countries like Canada, the United States, Israel and Russia makes them major potash producers, whereas agriculture-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India meet their potassium requirements through imports only. In these countries, the huge availability of potassium-bearing rocks/minerals like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica and glauconitic sandstone, containing around 4 to 17 percent K2O, brings up the prospect of commercial production of potassium. Potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast-leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. Although seawater is vastly available, the recovery of potassium from seawater using chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane separation and ion-exchange methods is not cost-effective due to low concentration of potassium.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916/ and an investigation of Illinois coal-w.ashing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coa 1.

This study investigated roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky and utilized geologic methods for predicting roof conditions in advance of mining. In the Highsplint mine, the roof was classified in four categories or conditions: Condition A and B (Laminated Shale), Condition C (Rolling Sandstone with Shale in Pockets) and Condition D (Zone of Major Sandstone Roll(s)). Structure contour and isopach maps of the Darby coal bed and associated immediate roof rocks were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. Trend mapping in the mine and on outcrop provided more detailed control for roof projections.

Crowing pressures on aggregate resources include diminishing reserves, high transportation costs, sterilization and land use conflicts. In the absence of detailed resource knowledge for a particular region, aggregate resource potential maps provide the best "first approximation" regarding the surficial distribution of sand and gravel. The 1:50 000 scale Level Ill aggregate potential map integrates several important factors which influence the management of sand and gravel. Data used to generate this type of thematic map is readily available in most areas, fieldwork required is minimal, there is a logical quantitative evaluation of the data layers and integration is easily accomplished on a desktop PC-based platform. Also the aggregate potential map, with its focus on identifying areas of potential future aggregate exploitation as well as present inventory, provides a useful tool for the aggregate explorationist.

Risk management has taken on renewed vigor since the economic crisis of the late 2000s. The resources of governments, individuals, and corporations are being stretched to a point where only the most promising projects move forward. Risk management is a crucial part of the decision making process, yet it remains a broad term that includes disciplines from engineering to finance. A collaborative effort will be necessary to ensure that the most auspicious and appropriate projects are the ones moving forward. Risk management can be quantified to an extent by comparing the likelihood of an instance with the result of consequence of the instance occurring. In this manner it is possible to assign risk factors to instances and ultimately, begin to associate monetary value to the instance. Carbon sequestration is an emerging field that has a number of unique challenges. Risk management and mitigation must be an integral part of the overall picture. This begins with the planning and design phase, continues through implementation and production, site closure, and does not cease until termination of liability. The ability of carbon sequestration projects to successfully assess, mitigate, and recover from leaks will be a decisive characteristic of overall success. The costs of mitigation and failure will need to be analyzed on a test level, but will still need to be reliable enough to extrapolate to a commercial level operation. This paper will build a risk management profile based on case studies and field tests in Tennessee and Virginia. These tests are scheduled to commence in late 2013 and consist of small-scale injection tests in unconventional storage reservoirs with an emphasis on enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery and enhanced gas recovery. The ultimate goal will be to provide a clear and concise direction to move carbon sequestration from the test phase to commercial scale. While it is necessary from a risk management perspective to analyze all risk points, the scope of this paper will focus on pre-injection risk assessment for carbon dioxide (CO2) leakage potential. Despite the differences between the two tests, CBM compared to shale among other differences, a framework for analysis and mitigation can be developed pertaining to leakage risk. The probability of each type of failure will be assessed and analyzed, and plans to mitigate or reduce these risks will be reviewed.
