"By now, most geologists and engineers in the Canadian mining industry are familiar with National Instrument 43101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101) and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, which are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. In recent years, significant progress has also been made in establishing standard reporting practices internationally that recognize the globalization of the industry and enable investors to compare projects anywhere in the world and make informed investment decisions. This article is part of a series that will summarize the background and development of international resource and reserve reporting standards by the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), highlight its current activities and provide insight into international mineral reserve and resource reporting issues. CRIRSCO was formerly the Mineral Definitions Working Group of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI), an organization representing professional bodies in all of the major mining and mining investment countries. In 2002, CMMI disbanded and CRIRSCO continued as a volunteer committee with limited funding from those professional bodies and increasingly from other sources, such as mining companies and regulatory bodies. CRIRSCO was adopted as a Task Force of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) in 2007. The ICMM is an influential industry body representing all of the major mining companies and many junior companies through its associated members, such as the Minerals Council of Australia, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. CRIRSCO now has funding to pursue its objectives."

Coal sorting with an x-ray-transmission (XRT) sensor has experienced a lot of development since first described by Jekinson et.al. in 1974. Powerful computers and increasingly sensitive X-ray scintillation counters enabled the development of high-performance sensor-based sorting machines. The first industrial installation of a belt-type XRT-sorting for coal is in operation since 2004. It is upgrading high quality coal from 1% ash to 0.7% ash for cathode production. In comparison to the high quality coal which is treated with a belt-type sorter, the chute type sorter has been successfully optimized for high volume coal treatment of lower quality coals. This project was funded by the German Environmental Fund (Project Nr.244444). In cooperation with the RWTH Aachen University and Isambane Processing, CommodasUltrasort(now Tomra Sorting Solutions) conducted extensive pilot test work under production conditions in 2010 for the destoning of power station coal at Arnot Power Station in South Africa. The experience gained during this pilot test phase led to an optimized, redesigned PRO Secondary XRT Chute sorter which is now in operation at a South African coal mine. This flexible semi-mobile modular destoning plant is treating a size range of -120 mm +30 mm at a throughput of 150 tph. The implementation of this plant not only reduces the ash content, abrasiveness index and sulfur content significantly, but also reduces royalties, water treatment and transport costs.

Over the next several years, the storage capacity of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago?s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan will be increased by 14.8 billion gallons through the addition of two large off-line reservoirs: the McCook and Thornton Reservoirs. The Thornton Reservoir will be constructed at the terminus of Calumet TARP System. The constructed TARP system will be connected to the Thornton Reservoir via connecting tunnels and gates systems. The connecting tunnels will comprise of: an upgradient transition tunnel, steel lined bifurcated tunnel for conveyance and control of flow, downdradient transition tunnel, and energy diffuser at tunnel portal. A large, approximately 250-foot-long, 69-foot-wide, and 40-foot-high, rock cavern will be excavated at an average depth of 320 feet to house the bifurcated tunnel system and associated six large control gates, each 12.5-ft by 28-ft wheel gate. Presented in this article are discussions about the TARP system, the Connecting Tunnels and gates Project, regional rock conditions, evaluation of reservoir?s wall stability for evaluation of tunnel penetration, and design challenges facing during design of the: rock cavern hosting the bifurcated tunnel system and gates and associated tunnels and shaft.

Typical sedimentary sequences overlying coal seams consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rider coal seams. In many surface coalmine settings, these sediments are saturated; and prior dewatering of them is necessary for effective and economic mining, including the stacking of saturated spoils. Such sedimentary sections usually have a very low vertical hydraulic conductivity that does not allow them to drain in a timely manner prior to their being stripped. One potential solution is installation of drainwells. Drainwells are small diameter wells that can collect water laterally from the various more permeable layers in the overburden and then gravity drain it to a lower layer – often the coal seam being mined – where it can be removed by pumping wells or sumps located in the bottom of the pit. A ground-water flow model utilizing the 3-dimensional finite element code MINEDW has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of usingdrainwells in a hydrogeologic setting that is typical of the Powder River Basin. A series of numerical simulations were completed using various combinations and spacings of drainwells and pumping wells to dewater the overburden and coal seams. The numerical simulations suggest that drainwells can be a very effective method of overburden dewatering.

The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a means of designing splice connectors which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. Because of the empirical nature of this effort, time has been devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. Special attention is given to the splice flexing machine which served as the backbone of the test program. In order to familiarize persons with connector terminology, a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. Various types of cable joints are also defined. The major effort is a connector design parameter study. Utilizing the optimum parameters developed along with the suggested design procedure outlined in Appendix I should result in significantly improved splice performance and thus meet the objectives of this contract. A field test program was instituted for the purpose of insuring adaptability of connector design and associated installation tooling along with a field performance study. During the course of work, other significant factors affecting splice performance were uncovered. Although not covered by the scope of this contract, a brief discussion is presented for the purpose of stimulating interest in what is considered other fruitful areas for improved splice performance.

BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces. "The move to LRFD methods for structural design by AASHTO, ACI, AISC , ASCE, and the FHWA has been a major change for the American construction industry. The deep foundations industry has arguably been placed most at risk by this situation, because of the need for, and the difficulty of providing, reliable quality assurance.LRFD is attractive for both the owner and the engineer because it promises cost reductions, but the assumption underlying LRFD is often overlooked - that the acceptable margin of safety can be rationally reduced, thus saving costs, provided that all the factors involved are closely controlled. This means that both the quality of the materials and the quality of the construction work must be closely monitored, and held to an acceptable standard.This paper describes the type of comprehensive quality management program that is needed in deep foundation construction projects based on LRFD. Case histories are used to illustrate the importance of both adequate inspection and reliable testing to a comprehensive quality management program.IntroductionOver the last thirty years, the major organizations that set standards and practice policies for the American construction industry, such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials (AASHTO), the American Concrete Institute (ACI) , The American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), have embraced Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) as an alternative to, and in some cases, a complete replacement for, Allowable Stress Design (ASD). AASHTO first published a new set of LRFD-based design guidelines for bridges in 1996, with several revisions in 1997, 1998, and 1999 (AASHTO, 1996). The 1996 AASHTO Bridge Design Code was the first in the United States that required foundations to be designed using LRFD procedures. LRFD has a clear advantage over conventional ASD where variability in material strength, bias in design methodology, and degree of construction quality can be rationally accounted for to achieve an acceptable level of risk."

Your personal assessment of the minerals business. Gosh! When I think about what has happened to the minerals industry over the past 27 years that I have been a member of SME! There have been fundamental structural changes in the industry. And I think that SME has been quite successful in coping with these changes as well. There has been a reorientation in how the minerals industry does business. It used to be called rationalization. Today we call it reengineering. In addition, the minerals industry has become more complex and more global. Shareholders have become more vocal and demanding in the management of the business, asking for protection of their shareholders' value. In the 1980s, a fundamental change was precipitated by a merger and acquisition fever in all industries, including the minerals industry. Raiders such as T. Boone Pickens put enormous demands on companies that, in turn, had to spend substantial management time to fend off the raiders. This resulted in a major restructuring of the mining houses. Today, for example, Anaconda, Kennecott and Amax are only historical names.

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. Twin-roll casting is an integrated casting and rolling process that involves the continuous solidification of a melt and the plastic deformation of the solidified metal between two rotating rolls. Computer modeling is a valuable tool to help engineers understand the metallurgical process during twin-roll casting. However, commercially available software can only model either the fluid flow/heat transfer of the melt or the plastic deformation of the solid, but not both. In this study, an object-oriented finite element program was developed to simulate the steady-state fluid flow, solidification and plastic deformation of an A7,31 magnesium alloy in a horizontal twin-roll caster. The melt, the mush zone and the solid were treated as a generalized Newtonian flow in an Eulerian reference frame and different constitutive equations were employed to describe the material behaviours. The effect of operational parameters on the solidification process was discussed based on the simulation results.

Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd (Heathgate) operates the Beverley Uranium Mine in South Australia, located on the plains between the northern Flinders Ranges and Lake Frome some 600 km north of the state capital Adelaide. The uranium orebody exists in permeable sands within the confined, highly saline Beverley aquifer, approximately 125 m below the ground surface and the uranium is mined using in situ recovery (ISR) technology. The Beverley mine is a highly technologically advanced ISR mine and is operated in accordance with stringent safety and environmental standards. The mine is currently licensed to export 1500 t of uranium oxide (U3O8) per annum. This paper outlines the fundamental differences between ISR operations and the more traditional uranium production methods, such as agitation leaching and heap leaching, where the ore is removed from the deposit, stockpiled, crushed, milled and leached on the surface. Solids tailings from either the mill or the heap are finally deposited in a tailing storage facility. ISR mining differs from conventional mining because the ore remains in place underground (in situ) and the groundwater contained in the ore-bearing aquifer is utilised as the mining fluid. This is achieved by drilling into the deposit and installing wells for extracting and re-injecting the groundwater which is fortified with chemicals. The fortified groundwater (ie mining fluid) flows through the permeable sands containing the orebody, dissolving the uranium. The pregnant mining fluid is then collected and transferred to the recovery plant where the uranium is captured (on ion exchange (IX) resin in the case of Beverley). The barren mining fluid is then re-fortified and recycled to the wellfields. Once mining is completed in a wellfield, the surface infrastructure is relocated to a new wellfield, and the mined-out wellfield is rehabilitated to its original surface condition. A comparison of 'standard' hydrometallurgical plants, heap leach and ISR shows a number of key differences, such as the rate of leaching, the level of control available to the operators, and the type of contact/reaction that occurs. While limited in its applications, ISR mining has proven successful at Beverley and provides another mining and processing method for the production of uranium.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. MESABI RANGE ore is mined largely by the open-pit method. This involves having available at all times sufficient working places which in combination will produce ore of guaranteed analysis. Fast- loading power shovels turn out under favorable conditions 1000 tons per hour from each unit. Each unit loads ore differing materially in analysis from that loaded by the others, One may load high grade, another low grade, and another may be in a mixed bank with the lead ore so placed that the product must be mixed at the shovel before it is loaded into cars. In such cases the bank is combed with the bucket, the door being left open to permit the material to fall through.

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

Conservation and environmental issues are raising their profile with respect to both demand restraint and electricity supply options. In New Zealand, conservation pressures and energy efficiency need to be seen in relation to the supply system currently in place which has capacity for economic supply of electricity in quantities substantially in excess of the current market. Consequently, energy efficiency and conservation need to be interpreted in relation to the supply system as well as in relation to end use. The relationship between the environment and conservation is strongest when new generation is required. New Zealand's electricity supply system consists of a large proportion of hydro production and this has significant environmental benefits when considered in relation to concerns of global wanning and the greenhouse effect. However, environmental trade-offs in supply options need to take account of both the efficiency of electricity end use, the trade-off between hydro and thermal generation and the inter-regional effects of shifting development options from one region to another. The Electricity Corporation has a high level of consciousness with respect to environmental and conservation issues and this paper demonstrates its own moves to maximise energy efficiency and illustrate the environmental trade-offs for supply.

Led by some of the global majors, these industries have indeed helped to define and operationalize the basic principles of sustainable development. Now in the midst of a full-on cultural shift, they are also key players in the continual effort to re-examine and calibrate practices to meet dynamic and increasingly complex objectives.SME’s technical position statementAs a home for so many technical experts and practitioners, SME has long recognized the importance of a commitment to sustainable development by the mining and minerals industries. In April 2016, the Society formally adopted a technical position on the topic following years of participation in, and support for, related activities. The full position statement appears below. The strength measured by the uniaxial compression test is a parameter that is widely used for the engineering classification of rocks. Sedimentary rocks such as shales, however, are difficult to evaluate by uniaxial compression tatting because the rocks slake during the preparation of the standard samples required for the tests. Indirect methods such as the point load test have been proposed to determine the unconfined compressive strength of shales and other soft rocks. It is current practice to use 24 as the conversion factor between the point load strength, Is, and the unconfined compressive strength, sf (sf = 24 Is). The present study investigated index-to-strength conversion factors for shales and sandstones obtained from surface coal mining sites in the Appalachian region. Regression analyses indicate that a conversion factor of 12.5 best correlated the strengths obtained from the point load and unconfined compression tarts in the case of shales. For the sandstones, a value of 17.4 best correlated the strengths.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.
