QMAP (the Quarter Million Mapping Programme, 1:250 000 scale) is a geological mapping programme which will build a digital geological database of the whole country and publish maps and books to document it. The programme was established in 1993, following a recommendation by a review panel appointed by the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology, and is funded by the government, from the Public Good Science Fund. The relevance and fundamental value of QMAP lies in the greatly improved geological knowledge it will provide for researchers and other end-users of geological information.   QMAP research involves assessment of previous work, field and laboratory investigations in key areas, and data storage, manipulation and publication using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer technology. The QMAP digital database of New Zealand geology will be completed by 2006, as will the series of 21 full colour printed geological maps and accompanying explanatory texts. Two are already completed and published (Kaitaia and Dunedin), and six other projects are well advanced.   QMAP information will also be available in digital form. Next year we hope to expand the scope of the programme to cover the reconciling and linking of many other earth science databases to QMAP, because we believe this will create a powerful research tool. The intention is to develop internet access to the databases, to make the information publicly available.

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and requires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged because a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced. Difficulties sometimes encountered in continuous filter operation can be summarized in the following four categories: 1) Low filtration and/or washing rates due to blinding of the filter medium. 2) Poor cake discharge resulting from sticky cakes, filter medium blinding, or too thin a cake for the particular type of filter. 3) High filter media costs caused by short life and frequent down times for cloth changing. This results from blinding or from abrasion by the scraper blade when cakes are thin. 4) Blowback of filtrate at cake discharge because not enough air passes through the cake to purge the drainage area and filtrate lines during dewatering. To reduce or eliminate blinding tendencies several modifications have been tried, for example, cover-cleaning showers, blowback under the feed slurry, and snap-blow cake discharge. In many cases, however, this simply retards the rate of blinding, since the filter medium is kept clean at its outer surface only by these methods. As blinding usually occurs within or on the back of the medium, the operator is finally forced either to remove the cloth and scrub the medium intensively with a cleaning solution or acid-rinse it on the filter—all resulting in down time, short cloth life, and additional costs.

The paper show how the inclusion of the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody into the mine planning and design process can be of great help, for the mine planner, in both assessing and quantifying the existing risk in the key project indicators such as DCF, and ore tonnage. This is achieved by using conditional simulation and Monte Carlo techniques which provide equally probable models of the original orebody model of the deposit. In this fashion, it is possible to assess the sensitivity of the pit design and related long-term production scheduling (cutbacks) to grade uncertainty.

The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded using 1.6 mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire and a continuous wave Nd:YAG system at a power of 4 kW, surface defocusing and various welding speeds, Compared with the base metal, the fusion zone showed significant grain refinement due to high cooling rate, No grain coarsening was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The porosity area percentage and total solidification crack length in the fusion zone (FZ) were reduced as the welding speed increased from 4 to 7 m/min, Fusion zone area, total penetration depth, and weld width decreased with increased welding speed, The hardness in the FZ was similar to or higher than the base metal after a natural aging of about one year, but there was a drop in the hardness of the HAZ, The HAZ width decreased with increasing the welding speed, Tensile test showed that a joint efficiency of approximately 75 ? 90 % was obtained.

Nanosized tungsten powder was synthesized by the hydrogen reduction of ammonium paratungstate (APT) in thermal plasma. The effects of operating conditions on the product composition and particle size were investigated. The particle size of synthesized W powder was less than 30 nm in all cases tested. The sintering behavior of the synthesized powder (25 nm average size) was then investigated and compared with those of commercial W powder of 500 nm average size and W powder of 23 nm average size produced by milling the commercial powder. The sintering was done at 1400oC with various holding times. The hardness of the resulting compact from the synthesized W powder (315 VHN) was similar to that from the milled W powder (309 VHN), but the plasma-synthesized powder had a much lower tendency to form cracks. The compacts of both nanopowders were significantly harder than that of the commercial powder (192 VHN).

The possible contribution of an improved mineral economy to the further advancement of the lesser developed regions of the world is a vital consideration today. Many of the newly independent countries recognize the problems and the challenge involved in orderly development of mineral resources. Some countries are inventorying resources, planning development, and encouraging local and foreign participation. The Malagasy Republic, composed of the island of Madagascar and the immediately adjacent islands, formerly the French Overseas Territory of Madagascar, is one of the members of the French Community which achieved independence in 1960. It is making real progress towards improving its mineral economy, an effort particularly remarkable considering the generally unfavorable geographic location of the area with respect to world markets and what is, after all, a comparatively sparse economic mineralization in the light of discoveries to date. Most of the development of the Malagasy econorny before independence was fostered by French private enterprise, although the State participated in some ventures. Since independence, the Government has encouraged private investment from a variety of sources through favorable legislation and has indicated that legitimate investment projects that will further advance social and economic programs will be welcome.

Paiam is a new township in the high mountains of Papua New Guinea built in association with the Porgera Joint Venture mine, one of the world's largest and most remote open cut gold mines. The Paiam town project is an interesting and genuine attempt at building sustainability into a community associated with a mine. A result of a tri-party agreement between a resource developer, government and land owners, this town is a good example of appropriate utilisation of benefits, obtained from resource development, directed at achieving a sustainable environment at local and regional levels.   Mining brought technology and income to the region, although as most mine staff fly directly in and out, local landowners considered there was a limited flow of benefits within the nearby townships. An agreement with government and mine was reached that more mine personnel and their families be housed locally. In 1998, we, a firm of Landscape Architects and Heritage Consultants based in Cairns, Queensland, were engaged to assist develop the fledgling town of Paiam into a livable and sustainable town and to produce material that would convey that information to stakeholders.   The design focused on establishing a sustainable town, with livability, urban form, aesthetics and opportunities for economic, social and cultural development. Aiming to be a livable town for locals and mine staff it included a market place designed as a focus for town life, essential for social cohesion and economic opportunities.   Located at 2200 m on steep rainforest clad topography, the town development has been laid out using an appropriate urban form based on organic village layouts. Clusters of houses allow for a common public area so children's play is monitored assisting with a sense of community similar to a traditional defensible village. Aesthetical consideration helps in developing community pride whilst maximising potential for development of a tourist industry.   Opportunities for ongoing economic development were incorporated in the design and construction process. These included developing skills and trades to service the region and to provide skills, development, income opportunities and infrastructure to last beyond mine closure. Administration procedures were set in place to form the basis of good governance.   The shift from traditional subsistence lifestyle to a sustainable community with traditional attributes was the project's goal and is being achieved.

Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.

"Gold has been reported from most geological environments in Nova Scotia; however, virtually all production (circa 2,000, 000 troy ounces; circa 60 tonnes) has come from that part of the province to the south of the Glooscap Fault which is underlain by Lower Paleozoic rocks of the Meguma Group. Over fifty concordant sets of quartz-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins have seen production. The host rocks are greenschist-grade equivalents of Cambro-Ordovician flyschoid quartz wackes and shales folded and metamorphosed during the Devonian Acadian Orogeny. The veins were emplaced under conditions of greenschist-grade regional metamorphism and under the same conditions of tectonic stress that later resulted in the regional folds and penetrative, axial-plane slaty cleavage. Rapid filling of hydraulic fractures caused by excess metamorphic pore fluid pressure under Acadian tectonic stress conditions can account for the geometry and paragenesis of these veins.The ultimate source for gold deposits in most greenschist-grade domains remains in doubt, but these domains seem to have had ample gold within them available for mobilization. The work done, to date, on the gold geology of Nova Scotia suggests that regional greenschist metamorphism was an effective mobilizer and a potential concentrator of Au, As, W, Fe and S from these vast reservoirs.In rocks of pre-Acadian age north of the Glooscap Fault, gold occurs as an important accessory in volcanogenic massive sulphide ore, as a minor constituent in other types of basemetal concentrations and in one small concordant group of quartz veins.The post-Acadian metallogenetic domain, which overlies and overprints the two older domains, contains small amounts of gold in many mineralizing environments. Veins, with stibnite and gold, cross-cut crystalline rocks. Disseminated gold is present in basal conglomerates of post-tectonic molasse. Gold has been a by-product of Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn-Ba-Sr deposits in Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks and has been reported with Pb-Zn-Ba-F in veins which cross-cut Lower Carboniferous and older rocks. Small post-glacial placers have also seen minor production."

Abstract The process of stress-induced fracturing around underground excavations in brittle rock is associated with dilation or volume increase of the failed, fractured rock. Different attempts to account analytically for this dilation have been made within the framework of plasticity theory. This theory has been developed mostly for metals, strain-hardening materials or soils, but brittle failure of rock-like materials is characterized by strain-softening behaviour and the volume change is dominated by geometric factors, which may violate stability principles of plasticity. In this work a semi-empirical Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) was developed, using as starting concepts: dilation angle, plastic strain rates, effective deformation modulus, effective Poisson's ratio, Griffith locus, and the definition of a bulking factor BF introduced by Kaiser et al. (1996). The model was calibrated in order to obtain bulking factors that are consistent with experimental data and case studies of measured bulking around underground excavations. Résumé La fracturation provoquée par le stress autour des excavations souterraines dans le minéral friable est associée à la dilatation ou à l’augmentation du volume de la roche en rupture. Dans le cadre de la théorie de la plasticité, différents essais ont été faits dans le but de trouver une justification analytique pour cette dilatation. Cette théorie a d’abord été élaborée pour les métaux, les matériaux ou les sols d’écrouissage, mais la rupture fragile de matériaux d’aspect rocheux est caractérisée par un comportement d’amollissement et le changement de volume est dominé par des facteurs géométriques, ce qui pourrait ne pas être conforme aux principes de stabilité de la plasticité. Dans le présent ouvrage, un Modèle semi-empirique de masse rocheuse a été élaboré, dont les concepts initiaux sont les suivants : angle de dilatation, vitesse de fluage plastique, module effectif de déformation, coefficient effectif de Poisson, locus de Griffith, et la définition d’un facteur de foisonnement FF apportée par Kaiser et al. (1996). Le modèle a été calibré afin d’obtenir des facteurs de foisonnement qui soient conformes aux données expérimentales et aux études de cas sur le foisonnement mesuré autour des excavations souterraines. Verschiedene Versuche im Rahmen der Verformbarkeitstheorie haben versucht, diese Ausweitung analytisch festzustellen. Die Verformbarkeitstheorie wurde hauptsächlich für Metalle, kalthärtende Werkstoffe oder Böden entwickelt, da sprödes Versagen von Gestein ähnlichen Werkstoffen von kaltenhärtendem Materialverhalten gekennzeichtnet ist, und die Volumenveränderung von geometrischen Faktoren beherrscht wird, die die Stabilitätsprinzipien der Plastizität übertreten. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein halbempirisches Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) (Modell für das Aufgehen der Gesteinsmasse), entwickelt, für das die folgenden Anfangsprinzipien benutzt wurden: Ausweitungswinkel, plastische Fliessensätze, wirksames Verformungsmodul, leistungsfähiges Poissons Verhältnis, die Griffith Ortskurve und die Bestimmung eines Aufgehensfaktor BF1 der von Kaiser et al. "Dating back to 1934, Con Mine is located directly south to the city of Yellowknife in the NWT, Canada. With mill operations ceasing in 2004, a challenging surface remediation situation resulted which required the treatment of close to 40,000 m3 of Arsenic impacted material.Through much of the period of 1941 to 1970, Con Mine treated their refractory arsenopyrite ore through the use of an Edwards Heath roaster. With mounting environmental pressure and through Canadian governmental studies during 1950 to 1970, attention was directed to the Arsenic Trioxide material being collected by two Doyle scrubbers on the Con’s roaster stack. In 1970, the roaster was decommissioned leaving the resulting Arsenic material in two containment areas on surface.As a result of Con Mine entering into remediation in 2004, the Con’s autoclave, commissioned in 1992, was dedicated to the immobilization of high impacted Arsenic material through the combination of excess Iron under high temperature and oxygen overpressure. Examined, herein, is the history and chemistry of the Con Mine autoclave as well as the two stages of chemistry for the Water Treatment Plant used to remove arsenic, heavy metals and WAD cyanide from tailings water. Simplified capping plans of the tailing containment areas and a high arsenic impacted area are also presented.INTRODUCTION TO CON MINECon Mine (Con) is situated just south of the City of Yellowknife in the North West Territories (NWT) Canada and is bounded locally by Yellowknife Bay (North Extension of Great Slave Lake) to the east and Kam Lake to the west (Figure 6). The discovery of gold at Con was made in 1934 and mineral rights were acquired by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Limited (Cominco) and Falconbridge soon thereafter. Nerco Minerals Limited (Nerco) took control in 1986 and in 1993, was subsequently sold to, Miramar Mining Corporation which in turn was purchased by friendly takeover involving Newmont Mining in November 2007 as a result of acquiring the Miramar’s Hope Bay project. Con’s underground operations ceased in September 2003 and have since entered into the remediation of the site. The current surface lease holdings are about 340 Hectares (Table 1) which sits on top of the Archean-aged Yellowknife Greenstone Belt."

Asmentioned more fully later, other ore reserve situationswere known, or were met during the study, in copper,gold and nickel as well, where poor realization: expectationratios had ranged from embarrassing to disastrous.These made it clear that ore reserve estimation had to belooked at afresh.The fresh look has resulted in a broadening of theconcept of ore reserve estimation from its traditionalpurely computational basis to an approach embracingall the many things that can affect expectation andrealization as essential factors. Hence this guiderepresents a gathering together of what has been learnedand what should be known to all those concerned withore reserves in any of its diverse aspects.The study has been marked"by a number of changesof thinking. At first the aspects that appeared to requireattention were two; recognition that an ore reserve statementwas an estimate, not a precise calculation; and asearch for im improved estimation procedure adapted tolow grade ores with narrow economic margins. Threeyears later the view was that the need was to incorporateinto ore reserve estimation all relevant aspects of theproposed mining operation from choice of a samplingmethod to sales contract specifications.This study is thought to be unique in being frankabout weaknesses in ore reserve estimation and intreating failures not as natural disasters (like drought orflood, which have to be endured) but as potentiallyavoidable. It has led to three principal conclusions.

"The mining market is researching innovative methods to train the workforce for mining which is normally extremely difficult to get. Thus, the dynamic simulation-based technologies become an essential pillar to educate and train the inexperienced staff at the pace required by this industry. Even if Operator Training Simulator (OTS) systems are commonly used in most of industries, knowledge transmitted to operators are unfortunately not ""capitalized"" in general. The OTS systems are usually delivered as a single hardware and software platform and very little as a full service long-term.In this article, an integrated solution to increase the efficiency of the operators is proposed. This solution is based on the combination of dynamic simulation, processes knowledge, virtual reality and the knowledge capitalization through the creation of simulation scenarios and e-learning. The Codelco Ministro Hales plant simulation project for a copper concentrator plant is presented as a real life example.IntroductionDynamic and real-time process simulation have proven to be a must in the development of greenfield projects, providing mechanisms to design and test controls design, interlocks, start-up, shut down sequences and operator training, among others (see (McMillan, 2006) for further details). Early adopters of this technology were utility power plants; in the petrochemical industry have become a standard, and in the mining industry the use of dynamic simulations is growing, especially in new projects and training of operations personnel for the adoption of best practices and new technologies, see (Nikkhah & Anderson, 2001) and (Toro, Ortiz, & Yutronic, 2012).This paper outlines a solution that utilizes dynamic simulations as the base of an integrated platform for operational effectiveness, which takes into account the current scenario of new mining projects and operations, where high turn over rates and needs of specialized workforce have given a special value to this kind of technologies."

SCRIPTURE, statistics and imagination all were drawn upon by the speakers who acclaimed Daniel C. Jackling as recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for 1930. The award was made at a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, in New York, on Oct. 31. Boyd, now ranking official in the Jackling organization, cited amazing statistics as to the quantity of copper supplied to industry by the four "porphyry". coppers that are under Mr. Jackling's immediate direc¬tion, as well as by those that, in a sense, owe their existence to the pioneer work at Utah Copper. In the aggregate- 16,000,000,000 lb. of copper having an approximate value of $2,700,000,000 have been produced from disseminated ores since 1905; and of this total 42 per cent came from Utah and the Nevada group.
