Today few in business would argue with the idea that we are living in a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.

La presente investigación revela aspectos sobre los métodos geoquímicos aplicados a la exploración de depósitos minerales, como las aplicaciones prácticas e indicaciones sobre de las diversas técnicas empleadas en el campo y y laboratorio. La exploración química de los depósitos minerales como método de prospección, comprende la investigación e interpretación de anomalías químicas relacionadas a la mineralización dentro de varias sustancias naturales como rocas, aguas y vegetación para así localizar depósitos minerales ocultos. La naturaleza de estas anomalías se divide en dos grupos: las anomalías primarias formadas durante el periodo de mineralización y las secundarias, formadas por la destrucción y dispersión del depósito metalífero durante el ciclo de intemperismo y erosión. Sin embargo, existen algunas anomalías de naturaleza "residual" o "vestigial", las cuales son descubiertas mediante el muestreo sistemático de rocas o de los suelos que de ellas derivan. A esto se suma, la dispersión de elementos en solución puede dar origen a muchas variedades de anomalías secundarias que tienen importancia en la exploración geoquímica como las dispersiones secundarias en las aguas de fuentes, pozos y aguas corrientes, en las cajas de cuerpos mineralizados; en coberturas de carácter no residual sobre y cerca de depósitos mineralizados y aquellas dispersiones secundarias en vegetales. Diatomite, also known as diatomaceous earth, diatomaceous silica, kieselguhr, and moler, has been used extensively for many years, but only during the past two decades has it become an important industrial mineral. United States sales for 1.936-38 totaled almost 280,010 tons,7 but relatively little (with the exception of that sold by an Oregon company affiliated with a larger California company) was sold by Pacific Northwest producers. In attempting to develop some of the many Pacific Northwest diatomite deposits, these producers have been handicapped by lack of published technical information regarding processing methods and the suitability of different deposits for specific uses. To determine some of the physical and chemical properties of known Pacific Northwest diatomites, the present investigation was started in 1938 by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington. Figure 1 shows the location of deposits sampled. Because most relatively pure diatomites can be used as concrete admixtures or as inert fillers in rubber, paints, and plastics, this investigation concentrated upon determining some filter-aid characteristics and their relationship to other physical properties. A filter-aid is a powdered material that, when added to solutions to be filtered, improves flow rate, filtrate clarity, or both. Some chemical analyses also were made.

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

"The discovery of the Mogador deposit concealed by 100 feet of overburden was the result of combined application of geological reasoning, ground geophysical surveys, studies of glacial float and extensive diamond drilling. The ground was acquired because it lay on the projected intersection of the Manville and Laflamme River faults. Systematic ground prospecting led to discovery of mineralized floats. A first unsuccessful exploration campaign lasted several years and consisted of 137 drill holes.In 1951 the boulder nests were reexamined and an associat'on of the mineralized float with boulders of a granodiorite, unknown in outcrops of the district, was established. Consequently, ground magnetic surveys were extended and re-interpreted, and a large anomaly interpreted as corresponding to a batholith was outlined. The existence of the batholith was immediately confirmed by drilling and the Mogador deposit discovered in third hole of new drilling programme in a zone of fractured volcanics paralleling southern contact of batholith.The Mogador deposit is a complex replacement of silicified volcanics by pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena carrying values in silver and gold. A total of 1,230,000 tons has been indicated, most of it now classified as fully developed proven ore."

THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has been introduced into the minerals industry in 2006 and has found various applications in diamonds, industrial minerals and metal ore processing since. The technology offers planar projections of the atomic density of single particles similar to the principle known from airport scanners, but being capable of treating up to 150tph per metre working width. In 2010, a pilot operation using a belt-type sensor-based sorter went into production at the Mittersill mine to treat the fraction 16-28mm. After an optimisation phase, the results were superseding expectations and therefore in 2012 a bigger production plant was set up. Two XRT-based sorters are parallel in operation since. One is treating the fine fraction 16-30mm while the other one is treating the coarser fraction 30-60mm after the secondary crushing stage. The XRT sorters are operated with the objective to reject barren waste before it enters the mill and flotation plant. 105,000tpa of waste material are rejected per year and can be sold as aggregate for road construction. This means that about 22% of the run-of-mine ore are rejected at an early stage with a waste reject grade lower than 0.03wt%WO3. The installation has not only led to lower specific operating costs but also led to reduced tailings disposal in an environmentally sensitive area. This allows the mine to reduce its headgrade which allows for a longer mine life. Alternatively it is possible to produce more tungsten concentrate, which is delivered to the smelter. This article will introduce the technological principle of XRT-based sorting and will discuss the flow-sheet of the Mittersill mine. Experiences that have led to the current plant design are described as well as the impact it has on the operation."

Pile foundations are used extensively around the world to support both inland and offshore structures, including important structures such as nuclear plants and oil drilling platforms. The limit of the pile depth is currently predicted during the pile deriving process, given no chance for the designer to predict accurately the capacity of these piles prior installation. Furthermore, after pile installation, designer may not be able to modify the pile group design by increasing the number of piles and or changing the geometry of the pile group. This paper presents a numerical model for the case of single piles driven in homogenous sand using finite element technique and the theory of cavity expansion. The model is capable of simulating all the construction stages of concrete piles up to the maximum depth, which can be driven in sand and accordingly the capacity, which can be attained by these piles. The program "PLAXIS" is used to perform the proposed analysis. This model simulates the process of pile driving in terms of the changes in the earth pressure and the overconsolidation ratio acting along the pile's shaft. Based on the results of the present investigation, these depths can be predicted based on the pile geometry and the sand properties. Charts are given to provide these depths for given pile/soil conditions.

The present-day metallurgical community is quite familiar with the use of jarosites [MFe3(S04)2(0H)6 where M = K, Na, NH4, Ag, 1/2Pb, etc.] as a means of controlling iron, alkalis and sulphate in hydrometallurgical circuits. This modern precipitation technology has found an increasingly widespread application in the zinc industry111 and is gradually also being extended into the hydrometallurgical processing of copper and cobalt121 . The chief advantage of jarosite precipitation is that the iron precipitate settles and filters well, and gives low losses of divalent metals in the washed residue. Although this jarosite precipitation technology was developed only within the past twenty years, man's involvement with jarosites extends back to antiquity, and jarosites have played an important role as a source of silver in several ancient metallurgical centres. In the early days of this century, argentojarosite was an important local source of silver at the Tintic Standard mine, Dividend, Utah, where over 200 000 oz of silver were recovered from highgrade natural jarosite over a three-month period 131 . At the Matagente mine in Peru, pockets of argentiferous plumbojarosite up to 40 m thick were mined and processed by the Indians prior to the arrival of the Spaniards14-51 . In Cyprus there are vast jarosite deposits associated with the ancient mining sitesl51 , but exploitation of these jarosites has been insignificant because of their low silver values. The most extensive mining of silver-bearing jarosite, and certainly the oldest documented instance of such jarosite exploitation, was in the vast pre-Roman workings at Rio Tinto, Spain. This mine, the greatest single miningmetallurgical site currently known from the ancient world and also the oldest site of more or less continuous metal production, has witnessed many metallurgical firsts. Aside from the initial processing of jarositic ores for their silver values, the development of large-scale hydrometallurgy also seems to have occurred at Rio Tinto. As early as 1737, copper was recovered by cementation on scrap iron from the mine waters at Rio Tintol51 . Large-scale heap leaching of calcined ore commenced with the British operations in 1876 and, by 1900, raw pyrite was heap leached to recover associated copper values161 .

According to Lindgren , the economic importance of pegmatites stems from the fact that they represent the principal natural storehouse of two classes of mineral products : (1 ) common minerals in exceptional size and purity and ( 2 ) several of the rarest minerals , which are not commercially available from other types of deposits . Most pegmatites can be described simply as coarse- to very coarsegrained granites . Pegmatite includes coarse -textured igneous rocks of any composition , such as syenitic , alkali syenitic , dioritic , or gabbroitic ; but basic pegmatites are far less common than those that are associated with acid rocks and correspond approximately to the mineral composition of ordinary granite . Moreover , only a very few basic pegmatites can be considered as economic sources of useful minerals . Whereas , in ordinary granitic rocks the individual minerals usually measure 1/8 to 1/4 inch across , in pegmatites they are characteristically over 1 inch and often more than 12 inches in diameter . Although some of the constituents of the pegmatite may be only a fraction of an inch in length , single crystals more than 10 feet long are by no means unusual , and some crystals are enormous . A whole quarry was operated in the Urals within a single crystal of feldspar . Huge quartz crystals are quite common although usually imperfect . Muscovite plates 10 feet in diameter have been mined in India , and the Purdy mica mine in Canada contained a mica crystal measuring 6.5 by 9.5 feet and weighing nearly 7 tons , which supplied more than $20,000 worth of trimmed mica sheet . A loglike crystal of spodumene in the Etta mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota was 42 feet long . Giant crystals of beryl weighing several tons apiece have been mined from several properties . Because so many rare minerals are found in substantial concentration only in pegmatites , it is a common fallacy to suppose that pegmatites are always enriched in rare elements . Traces of most of these elements , of course , are found in almost all igneous rocks , and they reappear in the sediments derived from igneous rocks . It does not follow , however , that all or even most pegmatites contain higher percentages of rare elements than other granitic rocks . Geological evidence points to the probability that notable concentrations of rarer minerals or elements in pegmatites are more or less fortuituous , such additions often being ascribed to events subsequent to the original emplacement of the main body of the pegmatite . Most pegmatites consist principally of potash , feldspar , and quartz . Even mica , although commonly present , is not an essential constituent . Probably

"The Mount Milligan Mine, owned by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TCM), started operations in September of 2013. It is located between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie and is the first major metal mine to open in British Columbia in 15 years. Based on reserves as of January 1, 2014, it has an estimated 22 year mine life with 2.1 billion pounds of copper and 6 million ounces of gold in reserves. Like all commissioning operations, there have been issues achieving design throughput and recovery due to flow sheet design, equipment failures, control philosophy, and reagent scheme. Efforts to improve overall mill performance include equipment modifications, reagent screening and testing, and grind size testing. Applying these changes to the mill and working closely with the mine has resulted in continuous improvement each month as Mount Milligan looks to achieve the nominal design capacity of 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day in the later part of 2015. Considerable focus is being placed into ensuring size reduction equipment is utilized effectively. Additional modifications and tests are being undertaken to steadily improve processes and alleviate restrictions in the mill. This paper will discuss the start-up and present ramp-up history of Mount Milligan, the current mill processes, and the steps taken to achieve expected production numbers.OPERATION BACKGROUNDMount Milligan is an open-pit copper and gold operation wholly owned and operated by Thompson Creek Metals. It is located approximately 155km northwest of Prince George, British Columbia, between the communities of Mackenzie and Fort St. James. The copper-gold porphyry deposit contains a Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 706.7 Mt at 0.18% Cu and 0.33 g/t Au, containing 2.84 billion lb. copper and 7.50 million oz. gold. Mine life is currently estimated at 22.1 years (“Feasibility Update – Mt. Milligan,” 2009). The mill is designed to process 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day and produce 400 dry metric tonnes of concentrate per day averaging 25.5% Cu and 40 ppm Au. Concentrate is delivered by truck and trailer to Mackenzie followed by rail to Vancouver for overseas shipping to various customers.Mount Milligan is considered a “zero discharge” operation meaning no process or surface water will be discharged to the environment. As well, stockpiling is very limited and is only permitted for a short period of time. This scenario presents several unique challenges. Scheduling of ore/waste production must be carefully planned as waste rock is used to build the tailings storage facility (TSF). Reagent selection is also important as persistent chemicals will have a tendency to build up in reclaim water which feeds the process water tank."

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. The major factors limiting the establishing of vegetation on the shale and sandstone wastes at Minto are high exchange acidity and low pH (shale pH 4-5, sandstone pH < 4). In the first revegetation program (1967-74), 3.8 million trees were planted without grading on 4,000 acres (red, jack and scots pine and black locust). White dutch and sweet clover, birds-foot trefoil and red top were established in selected areas, and ponds were stocked with brook trout. In the second phase of reclamation, beginning in 1979, a comprehensive plan will be initiated which will allow for forest production, wildlife development and recreational activities.
