Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. Coal has traditionally been an integral part of life in Kentucky. Coal mining produces a large part of revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and provides a significant number of jobs to the residents of eastern (less in western) Kentucky. Recently, however, the coal industry of Kentucky has had to endure many hardships. The Clean Air Act set forth sulfur dioxide emission standards which have severely affected much of the coal mining industry in Kentucky, because much of the coal mined in Kentucky has a high sulfur content. In this paper, the background around the effects of Clean Air Act on the coal industry is introduced. The economic and social effects of the Clean Air Act on the Kentucky coal mining are addressed.

Stability of fine quartz suspensions in process water is of concern in several mineral processing applications. In alkaline solutions, the presence of magnesium ions, arising from such sources as water hardness and magnesium-bearing minerals, leads to the precipitation of Mg(OH)2 which coats the surfaces of quartz. The conditions under which heterocoagulation or surface precipitation of Mg(OH)2 on quartz occur and the manner in which they influence the settling behavior of ground quartz was studied by means of settling tests, coating density determinations, zeta potential measurements and electron microscope observations. Coating density was greater when Mg(OH)2 nucleated on the surface of quartz than when the precipitates heterocoagulated on the quartz surface. The settling curves of quartz suspensions in the presence of different concentrations of MgCl2 exhibited a maximum of maxima which occurred at 10-3M MgC12 and pH 11. Interactions between quartz and Mg(OH)2, and flocculation-dispersion characteristics of quartz suspensions in this system are discussed.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer (BWOAS) consists of 4,000m (13,200 ft) of 3.66m (12 ft)diameter tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. The project involves many new innovations, including: Slurry wall work shaft with excavation below the water table; Hybrid universal rings combining traditional steel reinforcement with fibers; New, full EPB Lovat TBM; Two component grout system pumped to the TBM from the surface; and, Linabond corrosion protection liner. The paper looks at the planning approach adopted to meet the various challenges presented, combined with an overview of progress to date.

Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

The abstract highlights the increasing use of mobile equipment in mining and its contribution to accidents. The research analyzes injury narratives from Ghanaian surface gold mines to understand the involvement of mobile mining equipment in injuries and explore the use of injury narrative data as a human factors tool. The study identified priority human factor issues, such as operating mobile mining equipment, part removal/installation, and the operator's cabin. The use of Sankey diagrams for multivariable analysis effectively identified specific operator-centered issues that warrant further investigation for improved safety interventions.

Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

A qualitative test program was sponsored jointly by the University of Alaska and Eriez Magnetics, in order to study placer gold nugget recovery using an eddy-current separator. Various gold nuggets from Alaska, ranging from 6.4 mm to 63.5 mm in size, were tested. All testing was performed using an Eriez Laboratory ESC, Model REA, fitted with 2000 gauss, surface field strength magnetic rotor. The belt speed was set to 91 meters per minute and the rotor speed was set to 2500 rpm in the forward direction. The splitter was adjusted to just reject the largest pieces of rock that measured an average 76 mm x102 mm x 127 mm. Based on the results of this limited test work, it can be recommended to placer gold mine operators, that Eriez Magnetics ECS technology is a viable and practical concentration technology for coarse gold recovery. Silver and platinum were also tested.

Surface tension and its control are important in the concentration of ores by froth flotation, both in terms of producing the proper bubble size distribution and to render the ore surface of interest hydrophobic such that adhesion to a bubble will take place. The influence a substance has on surface tension has traditionally been measured using static, equilibrium techniques. Yet many applications such as flotation involve rate-related effects of surface tension where equilibrium values are not reached. In the time frame of 1 - 300 seconds, aging effects have been noted for bubbles formed in dodecylamine acetate solutions; a slow decrease in surface tension occurs until an equilibrium value is reached, as studied by Finch and Smith (1972). Since stationary bubbles do not exist in flotation cells because of the turbulence generated by agitation and aeration, it is more likely that the chemical composition of the bubble is determined during its formation, under dynamic conditions. The chemical composition is extremely important because the induction time required for a particle-bubble entity to collide and adhere to each other is augmented by favorable surface tension (wetting) proper- ties between the surface of the particle and the bubble air-water interface or envelope, as considered by Mackenzie and Matheson (1963). Finch and Lyman (1976) have established that the probability of a "permanent" attachment taking place during this contact time is aided by the ability of an oil droplet (viz. bubble) to relieve non- equilibrium surface tension effects which are involved in the water-thinning process. This Maragoni effect, or surface elasticity, can be considered in the context of particle agglomeration addressed by Kao and coworkers (1975). Water drainage leads to the formation of a collector-frother meniscus appearing between the colliding entities, arising from their combined partial immiscibility in the water phase and promoted by hydrophobic bonding within the interface. Together they constitute a liquid bridge whose force of attraction drawing the particles together is proportional to the interfacial tension existing between the water phase and liquid bridge. This adhesive force shows an approximate linear decrease with separation distance until rupture occurs, that is, FX = Fmax (1 ? X/Xr) (1) for a distance of separation X and rupture distance G. The greater the surface elasticity of the bubble, the greater will be the rupture distance and the better will be the force of adhesion. BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January 1995 to develop long-term plans for decommissioning waste rock material at its Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, a total of 4 Gt (4.4 billion st) will be deposited in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semiarid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. Data obtained from a laboratory program and from soil-atmosphere modeling was used to design horizontal field test plots. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots is discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapotranspiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near-zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. An important feature of the design is the use of run-of-mine waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long-term performance.

Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

Mineral property appraisers engaged in eminent domain actions on properties for which mining is the highest and best use must be fully competent in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project development, and mine operations (or retain the requisite competent assistance), as well as educated in eminent domain appraisal (USPAP Competency Rule). Failure to ensure such triggers the issue of appraisal competence and demonstrates a flagrant disregard of the myriad code(s) and guidelines to which the appraiser is subject. The cavalier assertion of some vague, undefined “latitude” in the valuation process does not exonerate the appraiser from a disregard of the USPAP Competency Rule. Lack of independence (i.e., “advocacy”) in mineral property appraisal is the usual result of a weak background in mining and/or appraisal theory. While it is readily apparent to those able to recognize it in reports and testimony, judges and juries cannot be expected to detect or recognize purposefully misleading (or even fraudulent) valuation concepts or testimony. Purposeful deception by the appraiser can lead to specious over-compensation of the property owner (thus victimizing the taxpayer); or, a failure to provide appropriate and just compensation to the property owner – yet, the purpose of an eminent domain proceeding is to leave the property owner no richer or poorer as a result of the taking. This paper highlights some of the deceptive practices encountered in litigation settings and raises issues of competency, professional ethics, and the effectiveness of the inherent enforcement capabilities within those institutions awarding professional certifications. INTRODUCTION The practice of eminent domain mineral property appraisal requires (particularly with respect to undeveloped mineral properties) that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project evaluation, mine development, and mine operation (through closure). To the extent the appraiser lacks such competence, it is incumbent on the appraiser not only to divulge this lack of expertise but also to seek competent assistance in the performance of the appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through a combination of appropriate and relevant technical education and direct mining industry experience. There exist a number of professional certification and/or credentialing authorities that speak to such competency. In a similar manner, eminent domain mineral property appraisal (as the term implies) also requires that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in the practice of eminent domain appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through appropriate and relevant education, direct knowledge of appraisal theory, particularly as it relates to the concept of eminent domain, and licensure.

Rock bolts are components of tunnel support structures and their efficacy in reinforcement requires the appropriate estimation of the bolt pre-tension. However, cases of ineffective rock bolt application due to loosening are common which leads to the potential failure of the support structures, thus negatively affecting the tunnel stability. The effective employment of pre-tensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut pre-load. Henceforth, this paper presents a load indicator washer (LIW) capable of withstanding assigned static loading as well as provides an appropriate pre-tension. The different LIW breadths are numerically analysed in the finite element code (ABAQUS) to estimate deformation when a designated 60-kN pre-load is applied. The numerical simulation employs a bi-linear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nutLIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, a long-term relaxation effect on bolt pre-tension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW-predetermined deformation is the bolt pre-tension. It is drawn from the simulation results that the 1.5-, 2.0-, 3.0-, 3.5-, and 4.0-mm-thick LIWs are completely flattened when subjected to 28-, 42.5-, 65-, 76-, and 88-kN pre-load respectively.

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.
