The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation, which often requires that the primary ventilation system is upgraded with additional shafts and surface fans. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room and pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. An innovative approach in designing the haulage systems for underground coal mines is discussed in this paper. The haulage systems are formed by serially connected components. Therefore an economic and efficient design of the entire system is necessary. The computer model that uses a heuristic algorithm solves this design problem globally in a single run. It is a probabilistic model because it considers the probabilistic aspects of face operations. It is versatile because it can accommodate any type of mining and belt conveyor network configuration. The hoisting section can be used to design drum or friction hoisting systems for single or multiple level operations. These systems can have two skips in balance or a skip and a counterweight in balance. The model also has the option to internally determine the capacity of bunker(s) and shaft-bottom bin. The objective is to minimize the expected cost per ton of coal hauled from the coal faces to the surface. At the end of the paper is an example that illustrated the capabilities of the model.

Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled onsite. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centred around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases inproduction costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

Grade control in open pit mining requires the specification of dig limits that account for mineral grades, economic costs, and selectivity of mining equipment. Visual identification of ore rock types is ideal, but this is not always possible in lower grade disseminated deposits where ore/waste contacts are not visually discernible. In this case, conventional grade control practice consists of a two-step procedure (1) create a map of mineral grades at some selective mining unit scale, and (2) determine practical ore-waste boundaries or dig limits on the basis of the gridded block grades or assay information. This procedure is laborious, depends on a subjective assessment of where the boundary should be, and may be economically sub-optimal. We pose the determination of dig limits as an optimization problem and solve that problem with the technique of simulated annealing. Simulated annealing has the unique advantage of being able to combine multiple non-linear constraints into a single objective function. We use maximum profitability and the ability of the equipment to mine the proposed dig limits as constraints in the determination of optimal dig limits. We require a map of expected profit for eah block. Geostatistical techniques are recommended, for mapping expected profit but not necessary. Geostatistics will provide a quantification of the uncertainty in the grades within rock types using all available blasthole samples and exploration drilling. Some variant of L-optimal estimation or kriging can be used to determine the block-by-block classification that is economically optimum. We also need the expected profit for each block. It is unrealistic to assume free selection, that is, each block cannot be extracted independently of its neighbors. The optimal balance of ''accepting dilution'' and ''wasting ore'' is achieved to maximize profit subject to equipment constraints.

Semi-autogenous grinding mills play a critical role in the processing stage of many mining operations. They are also one of the most intensive energy consumers of the entire process. Current forecasting techniques of energy consumption base their inferences on feeding ore mineralogical features, SAG dimensions, and operational variables. Experts recognize their capabilities to provide adequate guidelines but also their lack of accuracy when real-time forecasting is desired. As an alternative, we propose the use of real-time operational variables (feed tonnage, bearing pressure, and spindle speed) to forecast the upcoming energy consumption via machine learning and deep learning techniques. Several predictive methods were studied: polynomial regression, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, long short-term memory, and gated recurrent units. A step-by-step workflow on how to deal with real datasets, and how to find optimum models and final model selection is presented. In particular, recurrent neural networks achieved the best forecasting metrics in the energy consumption prediction task. The workflow has the potential of being extended to any other temporal and multivariate mineral processing datasets.

When Caterpillar announced that it had purchased Bucyrus for $8.8 billion, it was billed as the next great chapter in the history of mining. Surely, when the history books are written, it will be remembered as a deal that changed the face of the mining equipment sector, and it could well be a major milestone in the path toward autonomous mining in the future. In the short term, the deal is a clear indication that the world?s largest equipment maker is bullish on the mining sector. The purchase of Bucyrus allows Caterpillar to expand its mining interest to six product segments (underground, surface extraction, large mining trucks, surface material handling, hauling products and growth markets) with 16 product lines to serve the mining industry. But the commitment doesn?t end there. According to Steve Wunning, president of Caterpillar?s resource industries group, which includes Cat?s global mining division, the commitment to mining goes far beyond the acquisition of Bucyrus.

Underground ventilation systems, which require electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating in winter, can account for a significant portion of the energy consumption of mines. Recent studies have shown that the ventilation system in deep and highly mechanized metal mines could be responsible for 40 to 60 percent of their overall energy consumption. Presently, underground ventilation systems are designed for peak air volume requirements, which usually occur well into a future stage of the mines’ operating life. As a result, during their early operating stages, the intake air volume of the mines could be well in excess of their true air volume needs. Such ventilation systems could be considered as uneconomic, and to remain competitive the ventilation design needs to improve while the mines are trying to reduce energy consumption and their carbon footprints. This paper introduces a new mine ventilation design method where an underground base-metal mine’s ventilation system is designed by integrating discrete-event mining process simulation (DES) with mine ventilation modeling techniques. Furthermore, based upon the output data generated by means of discrete-event mining process simulations, the air volume requirement for the operating life of the mine is determined for “traditional” versus “activity-based” ventilation requirements. The output data generated through ventilation simulations are then used to quantify the economic and environmental benefits of an activity-based ventilation delivery system.

The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour(acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec(50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al.,1987).

Clay minerals play an important role in the gravitational stability of man-made rock piles by affecting geotechnical and hydrological characteristics of the material. The Goathill North rock pile at the Questa Mine in northern New Mexico has been the focus of a multi-disciplinary study to determine the effect of weathering on rock pile stability and in particular to determine if clay minerals are forming in the rock pile due to surface weathering. The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses indicate the clay minerals found within the fine-grained soil matrix of the rock pile are of hydrothermal origins and did not detect any neoformation of clay minerals. The foremost mechanism for an increase in clay minerals within the rock pile is the physical break down of hydrothermally altered rock fragments to release hydrothermal clay minerals. The hydrothermal clay minerals within the rock pile show evidence of weathering by the dehydration of smectite from 2-water to 1-water interlayers within the clay mineral structure. This dehydration is most likely due to higher temperatures and low relative humidities in the Goathill north rock pile during surface exposure.

Flotation columns are widely used in mineral processing and coal preparation industry today. Mathematical modeling of flotation columns has conventionally been done using axial dispersion or tank-in-series models. However, for design and scale up purposes these models are not adequate enough because they do not provide detailed information of the flow fields within the column. This paper presents a Two-Dimensional, Two-Phase. Fluid-dynamic Model and its numerical solutions for some cases encountered in column flotation. The MAC (Marker and Cell) method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions, and based on this method a computer code COLUMNFLOW was developed. The simulated flow field reveals the presence of a circulation flow structure in flotation columns, which could be one of the main reasons for mixing in column flotation. The effects of some parameters such as superficial gas and liquid velocities on the characteristics of the flow structure in flotation columns were also tested with the numerical model.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. The ability of wireless systems—e.g., voice communication, proximity detection, tele-remote operation, telemetry, etc.—to function satisfactorily (coexist) in the presence of other wireless systems is critical to the safety and health of mine workers. The failure of wireless systems to coexist could result in the delay, corruption, or outright loss, of critical data, voice, or video information. However, no mining-sector-specific regulations, standards, or guidelines exist to ensure the safe coexistence of wireless systems. This paper introduces the concept of wireless coexistence, implications in the mining industry, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) research approach to develop guidelines and recommendations to ensure safe wireless coexistence.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

The present article reports the recovery of potassium from mica scrap using carbide lime waste and NaCl. The acid leaching of mica [4 M H2SO4 at 90 °C] can recover a maximum of 25% potassium. However, in the chlorination roasting (with CLW and NaCl) water leaching process, it was possible to recover potassium to the tune of 94% [900 °C, 50 min roasting; mica:CLW:NaCl 1:0.75:1]. The formation of water-soluble phase like sylvite (KCl) and water-insoluble phases like anorthite ( CaAl2Si2O8) and nepheline ( NaAlSiO4) confirms the complete breakdown of the mica crystal structure. The extraction mechanism proceeds with the formation of a transition state followed by the release of potassium as KCl. The characterisation studies using ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR and FESEM support the proposed extraction mechanism. The salt produced by the evaporation of roast-leached liquor confirms the presence of sylvite and halite only, which can be separated to get the fertiliser grade KCl.
